Mimosa Pudica (Shy Plant) Moves When You Touch It! | Full Grow Guide
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 лис 2018
- A few weeks ago I posted a video on my Instagram of a plant that moves when you touch it. It's called Mimosa pudica, but it's know by MANY names around the world as it's a pantropical weed:
- Shy plant
- Tickle me plant
- Sensitive plant
- Touch me not plant
- Putri malu
- ...and many, MANY more.
I decided that instead of just doing a video where I touch the leaves and stems to show you the movement, why not grow them from seed and then run some touching experiments on them? So that's what I did. Larry from the Tickle Me Plant company sent out a little growing kit with some instructions, so huge thank you to him for that.
Watch to the end, because I do a FIRE test on the leaves to see how they react to heat!

When I lived in Oregon many moons ago, a beautiful Mimosa adorned our back yard. It was huge! My husband pruned it 1/2 back every year which was a good thing as it allowed for a very thick "trunk" to form that supported this fast growing tree really well. One of the most stunning plants on God's Green Earth!
Justice for the 4th plant 🌱
:P
This video is the best we’ve seen on this topic online. You were awesome! So helpful! We love you and are fans & followers now! Thanks a bunch!
Came here to learn about edible plants and growing food but really enjoy your content and the information Have a great week man!!
Thanks! Don't worry, much more edible content coming soon my friend
I remember reading somewhere that those kind of plants are actually sensitive to heat, not just physical touch so that could explain why it’s difficult to make them move
Later in the video I used a flame!
...I grow these for fun here zone 6... their movement stops at temps below 65*F or about 18* C...they enjoy trimmed to fit areas too...makes a great house plant till winter then no sun power...never did the soaking thing tho always germinated in 4 to 7 days....in checked they grow thorns pop pop link flowers then seed pods getting almost 3 foot tall...their timed by the sun length to flower seed and die off...worth the fun...
There's a native relative here in Florida called the Sunshine mimosa. Some folks use it for a ground covering replacement for grass.
No thorns on that one?
It has hairy stems, but no real thorns like some other varieties. I think its natural range is limited to Florida and Texas. It's sensitive just like this one. As a child in Texas, I think we called them 'touch-me-not's.'
I used normal temp water to soak them for just a couple hours before I put them in some premium organic potting mix in some seed starting pots. I sowed 7, 3 in 2 and 2 in the last. 4 germinated and are growing into beautiful babies. So excited!!!
I'd like to see you grow some carnivorous plants from seed if you could please!
Good idea! I'll see what I can do about getting some seeds!
Yes!!
native to the philippines. basically a weed here.
Yup, so I heard!
Burn it with fire!!!
I've tried all sorts of things and I'm thinking about burning the soil in order to kill it for good.
native to the Brazil too
Makahiya
It's actually native to South America
A weed in Puerto Rico as well! Loved playing with them while I was little❤🌿
Puerto Rico was the first place I ever seen the plant. It doesn't feel good when you step on it. Haha!
Me tooo.. I played with those all the time in St.Lucia 😍
I now own one of these plants as of today! They're so cool. It's not a little seed yet it is pretty well grown already.
I'm so glad I seen this lol. How cool is that!! I'm definitely growing this now lol.. I love that you burned it with fire and poked the heck out of it😄 I could hear the excitement in your voice when you were doing the tests. Thanks for sharing this. I've really been enjoying your videos 💞
I was petting one of these in the nursery today 🥰 so interesting!
I live in Oklahoma and I find these plants growing wild all over the place but i cant seem to get them to grow from seed.
We call that plant "makahiya" here in Philippines which mean shy. It pretty much grows everywhere here before with grasses. Now i see this plant rarely. Im planning to plant these any day soon.
I saw a big mimosa bush in the Behind the Seeds tour at Epcot and fell in love with it. I managed to find a little mimosa. And I've been taking care of her for 6-7 years now. It gave me many flowers, and a couple seeds. I also bought some seeds on the web last year and got them to grow this summer. I'm hoping to get a bush next year.
Wow, how have you managed to keep it alive for so many years? I thought these plants were annuals?
@@WAKEUPARTIST water and sunshine. I dont know about the annual part. Maybe because it is kept indoors? There where many times when I thought I was actually going to lose it.
@@smumdax ... and love ... you forgot a little love ...
Hey do you have an updated video on this plant? Would love to see how it has grown :))
I’m so excited I have a couple seeds going and I think they are just the cutest little things ever!!
These are so cool. Growing up in central America there were big bushes of this plant and they were fun to play with.
Bring back that childhood and grow some ;)
Thank you for this video, I was searching for info on this plant. I bought one about a month ago from a nursery.
I saw these along the fence of my great grandpa’s house in Vietnam. It is very fun to play with!
I've ordered some, can't wait to try them
I saw these growing wild in Costa Rica. It was so cool!!! Thanks for this video!
You're welcome!
Hello I have a question how did you learn all of these planting skills also how do you feel about making your own compost ?
Tickle me plant!! So great!!
Over here in Honduras (and probably the whole of Central America) we call it "dormilona", which translates to "one that sleeps too much"
Fun! Don't know if it was the lighting in your video, but I noticed that the leaves with darker pigmentation seemed to be the most sensitive.
Those are the more mature leaves, so it makes sense!
Epic Gardening Huh! I would think it would be the opposite. Learn something every day! 🙂
Can we get an update on this plant? Mine keeps dying back and I have no idea why. A grow guide would be great!
I'll do one if I can!
@@epicgardening Thanks! That would be awesome!
what a fun plant! Never heard of it in the Netherlands. It would be fun to try out with my students. I am going to look for seeds. Thanks for showing!
I wish you showed us how to care for them. What type of environment they like best etc, if they need to be left with the done on top for humidity.
I had one of these growing under a grow light system. I LOVED IT! it was so sensitive if you blew on it then it would also move
So beautiful
In the 70's when I had them they were called Sensitive plant. I'm in California. I didn't know the Latin name so thank you because I didn't know what to look for. Seems a lot of different countries have different names for them, like Shame plant, Shame plant and so on.
Omg, family and I are watching a nature based movie and this plant came to mind..Im. such a tree hugger, nature lover. As a child I use to cry when my siblings would touched this plant ..I thought it was feeling sad !
..it doesn't want to be touched! Uuuuugghhh! I still feel that energy when someone touches it stooooop touching them!
It made me die laughing when you said *"the stem is not responding"* in such a firm tone
I seen this in the forests of northern ontario as a child i always wanted one since then
Seeds and kits are pretty cheap!
When they were in the water does it matter where the glass/mug is placed? Sun/shade?
Beautiful plants
Thanks!

So cute 😁
I have been growing m.pudica for a long time, and i have never touched it.i don't see a reason to disturb my plants, i protect them with my life and i let nobody get any close to them, specially my cacti, pudica and other sensitive plants i have.
Good for you, you're very kind 💕💕
don't bugs get on them?
I held my breath when u put it next to the candle😳😂
Hey i would love to see you grow camellia sinensis aka the tea plant!
Great idea!
Do you think this plant would send well in the mail all transaction within america? I ask because I hatched many seeds and I don't need this many plants!
Grows in the wild, in meadows and roadside in Texas, one of my favorite plants. Right now, we are surrounded by American Beauty berry bushes, grows wild in East Texas, and I thought those were exotic when I was working in a commercial greenhouse company in central Texas. I wonder if I could transplant into a container? Do you have any tips for taming a wild plant?
... makes an interesting addition to planters and alone inside ... just keep it warm ...house plant up north ...
I have 2 seedlings from seed. Theyve grown tall and leggy..but still delicate and young...how do i make sure they grow dense and bushy? Im afraid to prune...they are still babies...
Give them more light
Ahhh Man that's awesome, plants are alive !!!
:)
Matt!! The River of Life! Im putting your system together now! So glad I have it bub!

Neat, i have the same hanging glass bulb set up with propagating pothos in them too! & thanks for the info (: Just ordered seeds!
Seems like that bulb propagator is popular!
@@epicgardening It's really cute so i wouldn't doubt it!!
I actually found that plant when i was travelibg and it was so funny and cute
makes amazing tea that is so good for you .
Hi sir. Can you tell me where we can buy this please!!!! Thx
I ordered just the seeds for a realy cheap price from a chinese seller on ebay, I didn't do the hot water thing and they sprouted fine.
In nagaland/india v call it touchmenot. Nice to hear the other names ppl call it
do they do tis to stop things trying to eat it?
I didn't do any of the hot water or pre soaking...I just poked a dry seed barely under my soil and kept it moist with some plastic wrap loosely on top like I do with my cannabis seeds and it was already sprouted by the 3rd day
Glad to hear it still worked!
This is fascinating. I am starting some tonight and your video has been extremely helpful. Thank you so much for sharing your work!
You're welcome!
I have one that has bloomed. Help!! What do I do with it
It's called makahiya in the Philippines and it's a weed. Use to play with in when I was young.
Can i grow this outside in zone 9b (Sacramento, ca)?
Hi from north east uk i have my seeds pots ready i need the root for tea healing for joint pain 💚
we have it likes weeds too in the Caribbean, we call it Tee Marie
Love hearing all these names!
Interesting! How long do they stay ticklish or in their collapsed state?
Depending on how rough you are, about 5-15 minutes or so!
Get the sensitive plant where? (Mimosa Pudica) from the Tickle Me Plant Company...sounds like fun
do the seeds really need to be soaked first? i sowed these seeds just like other seeds and put 'em on shady but hot area
soaked in HOT water too
Very cool.
Where do I get this ???
Thanks for the video! I tried with seeds 6 times and only one took but I pulled it out thinking it is a weed 😂 Going to try as you did. “The weed” is back in soil 🤞🏻 Thanks god I do not clean after myself 😆😆😆
Ordered mine on Hirts and it came looking like a random twig in roots that are half way out of the water with wrinkled leaves under the packaging.
I love Minute 14:00 with the heat applied :)
Thanks ;)
Here in puerto rico it grow as a weed with spines.
I've felt the spines before...ouch
Way back then there are lot of these growing just anywhere, now I can only see them in nurseries
I like them
Oh my Gawd☺️💓
What type of dirt did you use? ;)
I actually do this (the touching) to my snake plants, pothos, jade plants, etc., hoping they would respond the same way as this mimosa pudica 😂 anyway cool video
In melli, touch me no plant grows by it's self and in melli in my state it grows a alot
I love all ur videos. In my home land, Kerala its a weed.
Thank you - and yes if you're in the tropics it's definitely a weed :)
The mimosa tree has medicinal use also!
WHEN THE PLANT CLOSES ITS LEAVES, DID IT GET RID OF A THREAT?
I want another one. I had one like that but a toddler got hold of it and killed it😥.
Bahaha that'll happen. Kids love to play with it!
How much did you water them and how long did you leave them in the sun?
Left in dappled sun, kept evenly moist
@@epicgardening Thank you! I'm planning to grow these with my own soil and pot. Hopefully, it will grow the same.
I have one I grew from seed as well. However you must be careful. It gets spikes on it once it gets more mature. I don't have any flowers yet, but it's about two feet tall.
... little more sun power ...and soon you will get flowers and seed pods ...not direct sun tho ...
can you plant seeds in fall?
I got one!!!
6:50 Anyone know what the three water plants are in the background? They look really nice!
i think he's trying to propagate pothos.
An annoying weed here in Trinidad as well.
We call it Timarie.
Nice to play with until you step on it or have to hike through it...THORNS!
👍🇹🇹
Is this also the "silk tree" mimosa?
There is a really nice Chinese legend/story about this plant!
Awesome, I will have to look it up
*Goes to google right now*
We started some of these this year, kids love them. I was doing some reading on them and i read they like dry soil because they are very succeptible to root rot. Though its so hot and sunny here i've been watering almost daily and have had better luck with watering than not. How are yours handling it?
In Hawaii those have thorns and yes, they’re weeds. Sucked when you were playing in the grass barefoot 😅
Today I go to school mesjad when I was going home saw that plant
Can you grow string of hearts from seed ceropegia woodii
You can! I have one that I didn't grow from seed though.
Wow
I’m Montagnard indigenous we have sensitive plants in Central highland everywhere hard to ride them out in our farm.
Yeah they're a weed huh? :/
This plant grows everywhere in the Philippines. I grew up playing with this plant. I finally found one and very excited!
In the Philippines we called that plant makahiya or shy because it feels like the plant doesn't want to be touched or bothered😀
The islands in Caribbean is flooded with these plants like it's grass😅😂😂
"Spamming it. Spamming it. Spamming it." 😂
I just bought one of these yesterday. If you still have yours I'd love if you did a care guide.
I've since given it away, I may pick up another though!
Love them, I have a chocolate Mimosa.
I found this plant in a ditch when I went to Cambodia a couple of years ago, and I’ve been looking for it ever since! It’s really cool to finally know what it’s called. Thank you!
*Not actually shy but actually sensitive*
:)
How do you make the letters bold like that?
Very cool plant
