Also mods, if your familiar with previous installments of the game or even the hbs battletech, this game has a severely stripped mechlab which puts a damper on the game. However the modding community is fanfuckingtastic and the game is incredibly easy to mod. However if you're not familiar with the Tru modularity of the mechs the standard mechlab will suffice just fine
thats right. I wouldnt call it underrated. Its still in development you could say and is evolving soo much. The first release Version had soo many shortcomings and problems in comparison almost feld like an Beta or almost Alpha Build.
Unless your a jackass console player like me, and don't have enough money to spare for a ridiculously overpriced computer just to play this game the way it was always meant to be, thanks bidenflation, if they implemented community mods into MW5 mercs hot fixes and updates much like ark survival evolved did, then console players could enjoy this game to its fullest and have all the freedom of customization games like this basically require nowadays to even be considered a market shelf stable game, devs really dropped the ball on this pretty awesome game, and the mod community for PC only has had to pick up the slack without so much as a thank you or a severance for doing so, really upsetting because this game could easily pull millions of other gamers to it if they did it better to begin with...
I just picked this up on PS5. I bought it as I used to play MW2 & Mechcommander and it's been a real unexpected treat. Good price too. Would agree that the dlc should have been included, at least as a 'complete edition' or some ish, but money grabbing corporations gonna money grabbing corporations. Also the quality of this review as a video is great, you deserve to pick up some more subs!
You missed a crucial factor of this game: coop. Makes it way more worth it. So much fun. Also this game has a great aim assist option. Makes it very accessible for my old father that doesn't have the best aim with a joystick. He can still land a lot of hits with the assist on so it helps him enjoy the game more.
The one thing that irks me in this game is that poor miners and poor farmers can send waves after waves of mechs and tanks at you, totalling tens of millions to hundreds of millions of c-bills for an impoverished plot of land And they don't do this once, they do this for every plot of impoverished land. Kinda breaks lore, economic sense and immersion for me
What, you've never had to defend your family farm by rallying your neighbors into a mechanized regiment, before? I was driving an APC before I entered middle school, back during the Great Corn Wars of '99.
What would have been neat is if they had used some of the universe's "agro-mech" units to give the farmers an inferior but still effective defense. Think combine threshers, but with legs, and the thresher bit is on an arm, that is being swung at you.
wait what? Why is it underrated? The enemy has endless spawns, the AI friendlies are stupid, and the mechlab is battletech2018 levels. Even if the DLC fixed all of these, it will not change the fact that it is a DLC, and not a patch. These should not have been problems in the main game. Asking for more money to fix these is fucked, and should not be rewarded
What do you mean? The series itself has always been underrated and a real niche. People rather clamor for Call of Duty (or any other shooter), Minecraft, GTA, and anything else that's mainstream, but generally some kind of CoD "clone." Mechwarrior or Battletech has too much depth that people don't want to spend the time to invest in it. People are looking for something quick and easy, and receiving instant gratification you can easily turn your brain off.
Yeah, mechwarrior 4 was my fav game as a kid, but I was literally 10 when I played it for the first time. Sadly, this game already feels like it's doomed to be forgotten despite everything that is good about it. Thanks for the video and I'm glad I found it!

Console fandom is something that I grew out of before I left high school. o.O Once you realise 'team blue', or 'team green', or 'PC is the only way' only minimises the amount of people you can potentially enjoy a game with, it seems pretty pointless to clutch at exclusives.
If you're interested in XCOM-style turn-based stuff, BattleTech is pretty good. It does the company management side of the gameplay better than MW5 as well.

Even if you don't enjoy as much the latest videogames, the universe really deserves a chance. You can read hundreds of novels, play the pen and paper game or its virtual incarnations, even watch the fan-remastered cartoon series they made many years ago called "Battletech" which was canonized as a "propaganda holovid"... I'm familiar with the games since i was 5 but they are only part of what i like about BT and mechwarrior
@@VolondM Probably come out as a stand alone title. Alot of content to cover. I just hope they'd fix some things. AI needs...work. Lets just leave it at that. Like to see a more engaging campaign story that is player driven. (Decisions have consequences.) Mission preview overlay. (You know like an intel brief. Work out your approach to the objective, before drop. See what the terrain looks like. Etc. Map out bonus objectives like those treasure caches. (Although Clans wouldnt really need anything from the IS.) Option to play as IS or Clan (but continuing as Mason or progeny of might work too.) So tons of potential if done right.
@@abyssbun444 it will in a few years and PGI is willing to let it sit and rot. They are letting MWO starve off, no plans for further MW5 content, and def no MW6 from them. They’ve moved most of their devs to other “key projects” like Lord of the Rings Online etc
There has never been a true RPG for the BattleTech series computer games. There were several previous MechWarrior titles for PC along with 2 MechCommander and 2 really old ones that were turn based from 1988 and 1990. This one is a mixed bag for several reasons.
Pretty much all this games short comings are fixed with Mods , Lack of Mission variety? "Coyotes mission pack" Subpar weapon sounds? " Khornes Soundpack" seriously the Ac20 sounds like a fucking freight train ,lackluster customization? "YAML" fuck around with engine cores ,types of armor, gyros ,sensors and other misc equipment
Also - I clicked the video because I thought the Crab on the cover was the underrated gem from the title xDDDDD To everyone interested in MW5 - Buy DLCs and download 20+ mods before you play. The basic game is sht but it DOES deliver tons of fun if moded properly. Just type in smth like “must have mods”. Everyone uses roughly the same package.
I kinda disagree that its a gem of an underrated game. Because by itself its frigging awful incomplete and quite frankly boring as sin with terrible writing and boring missions. As a mod platform its pretty good. As vanilla not so much. Automated turrets are insanely rare in Battletech often only found at somewhere important. Not every 5 feet. I swear I kill an airforce and a batallion of armor a missiom vanilla. The AI is lackluster at best and frustrating at worst. The mechlab is a more restricted version of MW4 and Battletech 2018. The mission design.is hampered by bad AI boring objectives and flyer/tank spam. Too many pristine mechs in places they shouldn't be. No oddball pirate periphery configs. No RNG based configs based on availible tech per house etc. The writing isnt Far Country or Battletech Cartoon bad but its up there for the abseloute snooze fest the story is. And it sucks because theres some fun gems hiding in the turd of the main story. The mech company managment is babies first management sim and is inferior to BT 2019. Its like a remake of MW4 but worse in many aspects. The chatter is grating. Mission control has zero depth. Missions feel worse than MW4. Also thr Leopard is a Tardis. It requires mods like Merctech YAML Coyotes.mission pack etc to be decent and even then it just shows how bad PGI are. The DLCs should've been included for free as goodwill to say 'sorry we made a shit game'. I flip flop between MW4 and heavily modded BT2019 because I find MW5 so bad and dissapointing. Even in coop to avoid the potato lancemates its still boring. Back to waiting another 20 years for a good Mechwarrior game.
Try Mech Warrior Online if you like PVP. there's allot more things to play with there. Merc is an easier experience; pve content; that you can play with friends; mod the game however you want.
I know this comment is a year late, but whatever: Speaking from the PS4 version; it’s got some serious crashing issues. Completely at random too; during missions, in menus, during cutscenes, etc. gunna assume since the game’s been out for a WHILE they’re not fixing it anytime soon. Autosave offsets this a bit, never lost all that much progress to a crash, but it’s still frustrating redoing a whole battlefield mission because the game shit-out on me at the salvage screen…
for anyone not in the know... if you are playing with friends / the one hosting the game is the only person that needs the dlc --- all friends can play all the missions as you are playing in that persons game i got the game thru gamepass -- 2 friends bought it outside of it, since i was just using my gamepass copy i just paid for the dlc as we were having lots of fun without it and it looked like a good investment also, they have some other version of the game now that drops the price a bit by having both dlcs and the base game included
Nice one, I have played all the old 90's Mechwarrior games and the current Battletech game and loved them. I only found out about this game via a random UA-cam video and am waiting for the Steam Xmas sale. Thanks :)
As a Battletech enthusiast I was *hyped* for this game. Then they announced it would be an Epic store exclusive and I decided to completely forget about it. I’ve been emjoyimg the turn based tactical Battletech game so much lately I don’t even care that Mechwarrior is available elsewhere now, maybe I’ll pick it up on a Steam sale or something. Sad because I was actually willing to pay full price at launch.
Playing co-op with friends is very fun. The reason is that you can coordinate how you fight together, and your friends can paint and customize their own mechs to their liking. You are also encouraged to buy or get mechs and weapons that your friends like. Really cool.
The DLC really was a blast compared to vanilla MW5, especially all the Hero mechs added at the end of the new questlines. It's a shame that the consoles don't support mods, they add a lot of depth to game after you've already finished the campaign and DLC questlines. Good review dude!
@@Psykadea There are a few mods that I suggest: TRulez AI Mod improves pilot AI and allows you to pick certain roles for mechs. Coyotes Mission Pack adds a few new mission types like Recon and Attack & Defend (combination Demolition & Defense mission). Von Biomes adds a variety of new environments and biomes for mission to take place in including jungles, mountains, and crystal valleys. Then there are the two big overhaul mods, Yet Another Mechlab (YAML) and MercTech. They each have their own quirks, but they allow much greater customization such as adding a larger or smaller engine for more speed or equipment tonnage and different ammo types such as inferno missiles for overheating mechs and flak rounds for taking out those pesky VTOLS. I don't know if they have all been updated for the new DLC yet, but those are the big mods I suggest you check out.
It would have been sooo much better if the radio chatter for the campaign start was "DAD, EJECT!" "I can't! The ejection system's been damaged!" "We're coming back to get you!" "NO!"
For music I like to listen to while playing I listen to Timothy seals mechwarrior 2 cover the mechwarrior 2 sound track sounds amazing and Timothy seals somehow makes it better in my opinion of course
Yeah, I've been playing around with some of the mods and I gotta say, it adds a lot of game changing content that console players just won't see, it's unfortunate.
Playing co-op actually makes the upside down tank problem worse. Something to do with latency causes weird behavior. Sometimes you’ll see tanks become bay blades and then decide their people need them as they lift into the air only to hit a helicopter on their way to the skybox.

There are quite a few things I'd say you missed, but I will note that saving the farmers is better. While you used jumpjets, you didn't mention it, and they are actually very useful and in some missions make the mission easier. Hero mechs have always been there, you don't need the DLC, but the DLC adds more heroes, variants, and mech chassis. When it first launched, it was actually pretty good for a base game. Looks like you're on XBOX, but the modding community has done a lot to improve upon whatever dislikes there have been, so console players are kinda SOL. Also, when it comes to co-op, if the Host has the DLC, you don't necessarily need the DLC to play with them. Because, the Host will share their files to the "Clients" (joining players), and you can play with them regardless. You essentially are playing their game. Mods will be a limitation though. With co-op, it is also crossplay, so consoles can play with PC, and the different PC game services can connect to each other, e.g. EPIC + Steam + GOG. If one were to play only the base game, yes, it would be boring after beating the campaign, DLC definitely required because of career mode. For the base game, it's not bad, it should be expected that any new modern titles will make "DLCs", it's just part of the way the industry works now.
The game is far more enjoyable now that melee has been added to the game. Melee is kinda integral to enjoying the pre-4th succession war era as there are not very many mechs; Most staples of the previous instalments in the series are either lostech or haven't arrived yet and half the mechs in use at the time sucked before melee was added as melee was heavily relied on in the 3015 to 3025 time setting. Before, the power gap between mechs like the Atlas and King Crab to that of the Charger (it still sucks though) and Victor was so substantial that when you got mechs like the Charger or Victor you'd just scrap them and keep using your current heavies.
Good job, new sub. It's a fine game though, as you alluded, a bit empty in places. There is also a very active mod community which makes the game FAR better. Covering some of those might be a good idera.
Awsome video ((subscribed)) , I was also a old pc and then xbox mech warrior fan, and you just answered my biggest question, I was waiting for a sale and wondered if the DLC was worth it, it seems that they brought a lot more features into the DLC which nicer than just the usual cosmetic skins. Gonna pick up the dropship version with all the DLC for 44 bucks.
The mods turn it into something it should've been from beginning. Fast repair times, no tonnage requirements, lower enemy damage, being able to jump into High Reward quest without wasting time, stronger 'Mech Traits, 'Mech/equipment delivery, no awful enemy chatter, ability to call for reinforcements, better economy, Battle Grid Orders, Better ENEMY SPAWNS etc. If it wasn't for all the expansions, nobody would bat an eye on this game after a year. At least the soundtrack is still a banger. EDIT: Hell, even as of new DLC, AI has HORRENDUS problems with pathfinding. This game is nowhere near complete or a "gem", but given that MWO was a disaster, I expect nothing less from PGI.
Great video, You should do another review since this game just got a new DLC. Also a lot of those DLC upgrades are free so even if you don't buy it they did improve the game.
Great review, but I'm a bit confused by your statement at 12:35. From what I can recall, there is not a single Battletech RPG out there aside from maybe the first Westwood Battletech game from 1988, and that game's classification as an RPG is a bit dubious. And the vast majority of the other Battletech games are real-time, not turn based. The only two turn-based games that I know are the previously mentioned game by Westwood, and the 2017 Battletech from Harebrained Schemes. The MechWarrior, MechAssault and MechCommander games are all real-time games, unless I'm missing something.
Still don't know how they fucked up multi player. Each player should bring four mechs. One of each type, light, medium, heavy, assault. Mission briefing, then each player picks mech. YOU DO NOT USE HOSTS RESOURCES. Your mechs repair comes from your save.
Huh, I dunno how it's for consoles but as for PC, the base game costs 5 usd + 3-7 usd for each dlc. Considering the fact it's a game you could easily spend 100+ hours in, it's a fair trade
There's a small handful on steam, doing a video on one now that I really didn't like called "Daemon X Machina". There are a few others but I haven't had the chance to try them out yet.
Great review mate. Concise, straight to the point and good humor too. Now, the reason i don't like this game is the graphics. Im a BIG Battletech fan and played the heck out of it and i have to say, for a game 5 years older than MW5 it sure looks better. It's like the graphics of this game are stuck in the early 2010s. The terrain looks bland, the lighting is basic, no atmospheric effects, no weather, no bloom, no solar glow and the people look like they are straight from the PS3 era. Now sure, the gameplay looks great and you have some nice weapon effects, but the levels look so empty and lifeless and the cities, like you said, are very basic, don;t have logical infrastructure like roads, trains, random vehicles parked outside, something to make the cities look more lived in and not just some destructible cubic buildings... Sure, if you are a die hard MW fan, you will look past the gfx, but for me, i just like my games to look pretty and also have good gameplay. Anyway, i might give this a shot if i can get it with a hefty discount. GG!
Yeah, I've seen comments and videos praising this game soundtracks. To me, for a videogame it's awesome. When I heard he didn't like it I thought "what the hell?" and then that clip came along. Each to their own I guess...
I just ordered my PS5 and Mech 5. I can't F'n wait till it gets here. I'm a Mech Warrior O.G. I ran it on an apple back in 1990. My former wife hated the game because it was more fun than she was, LOLOLO..............
I played this some last month and played it for a long time back in 20 and 21. I enjoyed it but it had two major flaws. First is I feel the Mech customization rules are too limiting. IMO adding things like Jump Jets should be allowed on every Mech and variant. The second is that at the time the game was made there was only one official design from the era the story campaign starts that fit the three criteria of my favorite Mechs (Jump Jet Equipped Heavy class, with only offensive energy weapons though ammo based defenses are tolerable). But it had lousy firepower for its size and isn't in the game. So to get something that I really like before the in game calendar rolls around to 3040 I have to leave a weapon hardpoint empty which I hate doing. To make matters worse there's a Mech variant in the game where when playing the tabletop campaign I can easily retrofit it to meet all three criteria just by removing some armor and adding jump jets but the PC/Console game won't let me add jump jets to the Mech in question
Great game. What frustrates me though is the lack of the battle lines moving on the map. So, im playing on career but i feel there is no goal. Earn money. Buy bigger mechs. Im playing on XBox series X. I have all the DLC. I imagine there is a mod on PC to create a dynamic map. I sacked Goblin. I got rid of him for a 59 pilot. I miss his banter 😂 'God help you if you picked a heavy mech' 😂 Yup a 100 tonner is sloooooow. Most missions I will use a Hunchback with a gauss and give the rest of the team the assault mechs.

Fond memories of XBOX titles? Dude, I had fond memories of the MS-DOS title! That's how venerable and storied this IP is. It also adds a little perspective to how deeply disappointing MWO was to so many people.
So yeah the EGS thing... For those of us familiar with PGI and it's general douchery it came as no surprise that they absconded to exclusivity with pre-orders already in hand after a few successful rounds of hype and general corporate begging. So there was that fiasco. Which handily goes some way toward explaining how MW5 ended up hollow, repetitive, and ultimately low effort dross (even after EGS showered with the much "needed" guaranteed money). Clearly that money went to good use... That the DLC was on offer to give players things that could/should have been in on launch was no mistake and PGI's usual behavior of double dipping it's already niche crowd. When you realize that a fair bit of the game was copy paste ripped from their already existing title MWO... Well you get the picture, I hope. The upside to all this is that now the game is out in the wild modders have taken up the saintly mantle of making the game more than the usual bovine excrement PGI can barely manage to cobble together. Is the base game worth it... on it's own no. That said, modded heavily the game is incredibly fun and full featured... for free. So at the end of the day, take a page from PGI the creators and give them the long hard one with no lube and enjoy yourself... they absolutely have.
Nice job, my man. Comprehensive, well-considered and accessible. Once you shake-off the bit of stiffness that comes with being relatively new on the scene, you should do quite well.
@@Psykadea yeah it's an older game and the graphics show that but i've played that campaign through multiple times years ago. over the course of years that is, fortunately for it blocky graphics works alright for the mechs. still enjoy the soundtrack and teh team ai is surprisingly good for the era. missions have a good variety, plus there's solaris.

All the comments about nostalgia for the Mechwarrior games of the 90's...how many people even know about Mechwarrior Online? It's been around ten years but is still a very active community, all the giant stompy robot action you could ask for and free to play.
Compared to MW4, this game just isn't the same. All the maps feel the same, just have different textures for different biomes. They don't feel thought out and are random generated like the missions in MW4. There's no map or mission brief before starting a mission. There were little cutscenes and a linear, logical progression to the campaign. There, each mission felt thought out. There was a theme that the game designers were going for with each mission. There's way less customization to mechs. MW4 you could put AMS, ECM, and BAP on almost every mech, choose how much power you want the engine to have, and even what kind of armor you want your mech to have. Here I tend to stick with something very close to the default configuration of each mech usually. This game has way less personality and gets very repetitive super fast.
I really liked you're video, mechassault 1 & 2 were my introduction it battletech then MWO then i discovered MW5M on gamepass. Got real reparative real fast but with mods and the dlc its everything i dreamed of as a kid .
If ypu've only played vanilla, I would recommend trying it again with mods. Nexus mods has a plethora of fun things to add and try and you'll have even more toys and fun things to play with.
I wanted to like this game so much, but it gave me motion sickness. There's no way to turn off or lower the headbob, and it takes out the weapon-group toggling controls that are a lot easier for me manual dexterity wise than using multibutton mice. GREAT gameplay, mediocre story, great graphics. I'd have loved it if it wasn't for the graphics and cotrols issues.
Exclusivity in the video game world is one of my biggest hatreds. Why limit something to a smaller group of people!? video games were treated more like passion projects and workd of art, rather than business models like most are treated now. Sure some games are real passion projects still, and you know which ones those are. I randomly came across a gameplay video by Magz of this game. Like you, I had no idea it existed, but was immediately engrossed and can't wait to play it once I have a better PC.
Got this game 3 Days ago with all the dlcs for around 40€ and have already played 20 hours. It is really a great game now. On Pc you have the mods (duh!) that makes the game even better. But i think even on Consoles the game will shine with the dlcs now. When the game got released on Gamepass i found it boring after a while and the sound of most weapons really are not enough but it got better with the dlcs and mods.
its a good game. but playing it without mods is just... i dunno. i mean the AI improvement mod alone makes it so much better. enemy mechs regrouping, hiding behind cover and running away when overwhelmed just makes the basegame look unfinished.
MWO is better imo, and free still receives updates to, we just got a new map last month and another one on the way, for a game that is almost 10 years old it still has thousands of players, were other mecha games like hawken have aged like milk, MWO has aged like a fine wine, PLAY MWO!
Mechwarrior games were what I loved most in the 90’s golden era of PC gaming. I finally got a gaming rig so I can play this. Maybe the wait was a good thing since the DLC packs and ray tracing effects are out there now. I waited way too long for a Mechwarrior game.
Nah, I hate it. It feels so lame, the terrain feels like paper or some shit. I don't know how to explain it. I hate the engine they are using, reminds me of mechwarrior online too much. It just feels like trash to me. The replayability is terrible. You never really get to be in terrain.. like never in the mountains, its just like empty boxes of terrain and box cities. it SUCKS!
This game is not worth to be played without mods. You do allways the same in every misson. They say do this or that but in the end you have to kill everybody all the time. There is no way to play tactical, endless waves of enemies spawn in the middle of your team or in your back. It doesnt matter that you came from there killing everything and everyone. Your AI-Teammates are barebrained stupid like 5 squaremeters gras. As an example: You have to defend a base and all your team runs into this base and crush in every building they see on the way but when you have to raid an enemy base your team carefully moves around the base taking care for every building and realy seldom, when they get bored to shoot every part of an enemy excluded the ones the enemy would die, a random shot hits a building. Your part is to brawl every time-every mission, because the AI is unable get enemys down for felt hours and your team-mechs get striped every second the enemy melt around on them.... and did i told you, you pay for the repair? Another point: You try to headshot an enemy but mostly the indicator jumps only to red condition while the pilot should had wings instand, because you alpha´d the cockpit with 2 large and 6 medium lasers or many, many short range missiles on short, short distance. Sorry, this game is either underrated nor a gem.
It eventually came to Xbox? The latest version I played was MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries expansion, and it looks like it's finally time to get back in, thanks for wasting countless future hours of my life, it looks beautiful
a couple years late but did start playing this game a agree with everything you say and idk if you mentioned but late game the game forces you to use assault mechs (obviously) which drastically increases the traversal time in missions like beachhead, raid and assassination which i find particularly annoying especially late game beachhead where having 4 assault mechs is a must meaning that you'll get bombarded by artillery almost indefinitely.
man i have to disagree about Beach head missions. best designed missions? god they are awful. they are the only missions that you can't devise your own plan for. you have to follow their steps step by step. and why the actual F*CK would you put mechs on the ground with all that artillery still intact... good god, bomb them with aerospace fighters or something. absolutely no reason artillery like that should still be operational when you put expensive mechs on the ground. they aren't designed to fight artillery, they are designed to take out other mechs and tanks and occupy strategic locations. i love the other stuff in the DLC, but that is a crap mission type that makes absolutely zero sense. best designed mission? what?
solid solid solid review. way better than those mainstream shills. subbed mate getting all the DLCs will give you full experience. when we got it when it was new on epic it was pretty bland. I'm replaying it nonstop since the Legends DLC and its now tremendously better. I've been waiting decades for a real Battletech sim experience and this is it. oh by the way, I still hate the campaign story. just go straight to career mode. and OH YEAH, being able to switch from one lancemate to another at any time makes the game waaaay more enjoyable. it now makes sense to have a lighter mech on your team instead of the super boring all assault lance. recon now makes sense! and melee attacks! wohoooo!
ok. just had to turn off my computer for a couple of minutes. not just a restart. really turn it off . now it works but now i have another problem. i bought an assasin with endosteel and an xl-engine. i took it out to put it in another mech, but both just vanished. completly gone. any idea why? thx upfront for help.
He covered everything but yes is mostly underrated by most fans because it doesnt bring that people expected at the time. Even though i do have to agree there is thing that should have been there by default like cantinas for example. More mission variety which is mostly the same one. It would also be nice to remove riana out of communication and now that i mention that there should be more communication between bitching betty which is computer voice with the player. Like in previous mechwarrior game that computer will always tell you stuff whats going on your mech in this game doesnt tell you if you lose a heat sink for example. It will tell you if you lose weapons but not everything else. Also doesnt tell you any armor critical warnings so when your shot at and focusing you targets, you wouldnt be able to realize some part of the mech is open in which thats the communication of the computer for the player. As the review is done right there isnt much to do in it other than keep trying builds and pray to god your AI lancemates stop fucking up your mechs.

Also mods, if your familiar with previous installments of the game or even the hbs battletech, this game has a severely stripped mechlab which puts a damper on the game. However the modding community is fanfuckingtastic and the game is incredibly easy to mod. However if you're not familiar with the Tru modularity of the mechs the standard mechlab will suffice just fine
DLC adds punching too! Makes it easier to knock out some of those pesky light mech that runs right up to you!

thats right. I wouldnt call it underrated. Its still in development you could say and is evolving soo much. The first release Version had soo many shortcomings and problems in comparison almost feld like an Beta or almost Alpha Build.
Unless your a jackass console player like me, and don't have enough money to spare for a ridiculously overpriced computer just to play this game the way it was always meant to be, thanks bidenflation, if they implemented community mods into MW5 mercs hot fixes and updates much like ark survival evolved did, then console players could enjoy this game to its fullest and have all the freedom of customization games like this basically require nowadays to even be considered a market shelf stable game, devs really dropped the ball on this pretty awesome game, and the mod community for PC only has had to pick up the slack without so much as a thank you or a severance for doing so, really upsetting because this game could easily pull millions of other gamers to it if they did it better to begin with...

I just picked this up on PS5. I bought it as I used to play MW2 & Mechcommander and it's been a real unexpected treat. Good price too. Would agree that the dlc should have been included, at least as a 'complete edition' or some ish, but money grabbing corporations gonna money grabbing corporations.

Also this game has a great aim assist option. Makes it very accessible for my old father that doesn't have the best aim with a joystick. He can still land a lot of hits with the assist on so it helps him enjoy the game more.
The one thing that irks me in this game is that poor miners and poor farmers can send waves after waves of mechs and tanks at you, totalling tens of millions to hundreds of millions of c-bills for an impoverished plot of land
And they don't do this once, they do this for every plot of impoverished land.

What, you've never had to defend your family farm by rallying your neighbors into a mechanized regiment, before? I was driving an APC before I entered middle school, back during the Great Corn Wars of '99.
What would have been neat is if they had used some of the universe's "agro-mech" units to give the farmers an inferior but still effective defense. Think combine threshers, but with legs, and the thresher bit is on an arm, that is being swung at you.
To be fair coming at your Atlas with a beat up 1974 Ford truck and a shovel wouldn't be a real difficult or compelling mission.

What do you mean? The series itself has always been underrated and a real niche. People rather clamor for Call of Duty (or any other shooter), Minecraft, GTA, and anything else that's mainstream, but generally some kind of CoD "clone." Mechwarrior or Battletech has too much depth that people don't want to spend the time to invest in it. People are looking for something quick and easy, and receiving instant gratification you can easily turn your brain off.

If you're interested in XCOM-style turn-based stuff, BattleTech is pretty good. It does the company management side of the gameplay better than MW5 as well.

You can read hundreds of novels, play the pen and paper game or its virtual incarnations, even watch the fan-remastered cartoon series they made many years ago called "Battletech" which was canonized as a "propaganda holovid"... I'm familiar with the games since i was 5 but they are only part of what i like about BT and mechwarrior

Mission preview overlay. (You know like an intel brief. Work out your approach to the objective, before drop. See what the terrain looks like. Etc. Map out bonus objectives like those treasure caches. (Although Clans wouldnt really need anything from the IS.)
Option to play as IS or Clan (but continuing as Mason or progeny of might work too.) So tons of potential if done right.

There has never been a true RPG for the BattleTech series computer games.
There were several previous MechWarrior titles for PC along with 2 MechCommander and 2 really old ones that were turn based from 1988 and 1990.
This one is a mixed bag for several reasons.
Crescent Hawks Inception, Crescent Hawks Revenge.
Pretty much all this games short comings are fixed with Mods , Lack of Mission variety? "Coyotes mission pack" Subpar weapon sounds? " Khornes Soundpack" seriously the Ac20 sounds like a fucking freight train ,lackluster customization? "YAML" fuck around with engine cores ,types of armor, gyros ,sensors and other misc equipment
Also - I clicked the video because I thought the Crab on the cover was the underrated gem from the title xDDDDD To everyone interested in MW5 - Buy DLCs and download 20+ mods before you play. The basic game is sht but it DOES deliver tons of fun if moded properly. Just type in smth like “must have mods”. Everyone uses roughly the same package.
I kinda disagree that its a gem of an underrated game. Because by itself its frigging awful incomplete and quite frankly boring as sin with terrible writing and boring missions.
As a mod platform its pretty good. As vanilla not so much.
Automated turrets are insanely rare in Battletech often only found at somewhere important. Not every 5 feet.
I swear I kill an airforce and a batallion of armor a missiom vanilla.
The AI is lackluster at best and frustrating at worst.
The mechlab is a more restricted version of MW4 and Battletech 2018.
The mission design.is hampered by bad AI boring objectives and flyer/tank spam.
Too many pristine mechs in places they shouldn't be. No oddball pirate periphery configs. No RNG based configs based on availible tech per house etc.
The writing isnt Far Country or Battletech Cartoon bad but its up there for the abseloute snooze fest the story is. And it sucks because theres some fun gems hiding in the turd of the main story.
The mech company managment is babies first management sim and is inferior to BT 2019.
Its like a remake of MW4 but worse in many aspects. The chatter is grating. Mission control has zero depth. Missions feel worse than MW4. Also thr Leopard is a Tardis.
It requires mods like Merctech YAML Coyotes.mission pack etc to be decent and even then it just shows how bad PGI are. The DLCs should've been included for free as goodwill to say 'sorry we made a shit game'.
I flip flop between MW4 and heavily modded BT2019 because I find MW5 so bad and dissapointing. Even in coop to avoid the potato lancemates its still boring.
Back to waiting another 20 years for a good Mechwarrior game.
I played the original Mechwarrior on my Tandy 1000 PC and loved it! I'm thinking about getting this one.
Try Mech Warrior Online if you like PVP. there's allot more things to play with there. Merc is an easier experience; pve content; that you can play with friends; mod the game however you want.

Speaking from the PS4 version; it’s got some serious crashing issues. Completely at random too; during missions, in menus, during cutscenes, etc.
gunna assume since the game’s been out for a WHILE they’re not fixing it anytime soon. Autosave offsets this a bit, never lost all that much progress to a crash, but it’s still frustrating redoing a whole battlefield mission because the game shit-out on me at the salvage screen…
The Coyotes Mission pack mod is a very good MUST have for this. Alleviates the lack of more mission types by a lot!
for anyone not in the know... if you are playing with friends / the one hosting the game is the only person that needs the dlc --- all friends can play all the missions as you are playing in that persons game
i got the game thru gamepass -- 2 friends bought it outside of it, since i was just using my gamepass copy i just paid for the dlc as we were having lots of fun without it and it looked like a good investment
also, they have some other version of the game now that drops the price a bit by having both dlcs and the base game included

As a Battletech enthusiast I was *hyped* for this game. Then they announced it would be an Epic store exclusive and I decided to completely forget about it. I’ve been emjoyimg the turn based tactical Battletech game so much lately I don’t even care that Mechwarrior is available elsewhere now, maybe I’ll pick it up on a Steam sale or something. Sad because I was actually willing to pay full price at launch.

I pre-ordered at steam and paid full price, and then they switched to epicstore at discounted price prelaunch and offered to refund.. I didn't.
Playing co-op with friends is very fun. The reason is that you can coordinate how you fight together, and your friends can paint and customize their own mechs to their liking. You are also encouraged to buy or get mechs and weapons that your friends like. Really cool.
The DLC really was a blast compared to vanilla MW5, especially all the Hero mechs added at the end of the new questlines. It's a shame that the consoles don't support mods, they add a lot of depth to game after you've already finished the campaign and DLC questlines. Good review dude!

TRulez AI Mod improves pilot AI and allows you to pick certain roles for mechs.
Coyotes Mission Pack adds a few new mission types like Recon and Attack & Defend (combination Demolition & Defense mission).
Von Biomes adds a variety of new environments and biomes for mission to take place in including jungles, mountains, and crystal valleys.
Then there are the two big overhaul mods, Yet Another Mechlab (YAML) and MercTech. They each have their own quirks, but they allow much greater customization such as adding a larger or smaller engine for more speed or equipment tonnage and different ammo types such as inferno missiles for overheating mechs and flak rounds for taking out those pesky VTOLS.
I don't know if they have all been updated for the new DLC yet, but those are the big mods I suggest you check out.

Him sacrificing himself kind of makes sense in the grand scheme of the story, but the way it's presented up front just comes off as really silly.
For music I like to listen to while playing I listen to Timothy seals mechwarrior 2 cover the mechwarrior 2 sound track sounds amazing and Timothy seals somehow makes it better in my opinion of course

Yeah, I've been playing around with some of the mods and I gotta say, it adds a lot of game changing content that console players just won't see, it's unfortunate.
Playing co-op actually makes the upside down tank problem worse. Something to do with latency causes weird behavior. Sometimes you’ll see tanks become bay blades and then decide their people need them as they lift into the air only to hit a helicopter on their way to the skybox.

There are quite a few things I'd say you missed, but I will note that saving the farmers is better. While you used jumpjets, you didn't mention it, and they are actually very useful and in some missions make the mission easier. Hero mechs have always been there, you don't need the DLC, but the DLC adds more heroes, variants, and mech chassis. When it first launched, it was actually pretty good for a base game. Looks like you're on XBOX, but the modding community has done a lot to improve upon whatever dislikes there have been, so console players are kinda SOL. Also, when it comes to co-op, if the Host has the DLC, you don't necessarily need the DLC to play with them. Because, the Host will share their files to the "Clients" (joining players), and you can play with them regardless. You essentially are playing their game. Mods will be a limitation though. With co-op, it is also crossplay, so consoles can play with PC, and the different PC game services can connect to each other, e.g. EPIC + Steam + GOG. If one were to play only the base game, yes, it would be boring after beating the campaign, DLC definitely required because of career mode. For the base game, it's not bad, it should be expected that any new modern titles will make "DLCs", it's just part of the way the industry works now.
The game is far more enjoyable now that melee has been added to the game. Melee is kinda integral to enjoying the pre-4th succession war era as there are not very many mechs; Most staples of the previous instalments in the series are either lostech or haven't arrived yet and half the mechs in use at the time sucked before melee was added as melee was heavily relied on in the 3015 to 3025 time setting. Before, the power gap between mechs like the Atlas and King Crab to that of the Charger (it still sucks though) and Victor was so substantial that when you got mechs like the Charger or Victor you'd just scrap them and keep using your current heavies.

Good job, new sub. It's a fine game though, as you alluded, a bit empty in places. There is also a very active mod community which makes the game FAR better. Covering some of those might be a good idera.

Awsome video ((subscribed)) , I was also a old pc and then xbox mech warrior fan, and you just answered my biggest question, I was waiting for a sale and wondered if the DLC was worth it, it seems that they brought a lot more features into the DLC which nicer than just the usual cosmetic skins. Gonna pick up the dropship version with all the DLC for 44 bucks.
When enemies spawn out of the blue, right on top of you, it doesn't matter. In 2022 they still have not fixed this game.
I've heard about this issue from other places but I've personally never experienced it.
The mods turn it into something it should've been from beginning. Fast repair times, no tonnage requirements, lower enemy damage, being able to jump into High Reward quest without wasting time, stronger 'Mech Traits, 'Mech/equipment delivery, no awful enemy chatter, ability to call for reinforcements, better economy, Battle Grid Orders, Better ENEMY SPAWNS etc.
If it wasn't for all the expansions, nobody would bat an eye on this game after a year. At least the soundtrack is still a banger.
EDIT: Hell, even as of new DLC, AI has HORRENDUS problems with pathfinding. This game is nowhere near complete or a "gem", but given that MWO was a disaster, I expect nothing less from PGI.
Great video, You should do another review since this game just got a new DLC. Also a lot of those DLC upgrades are free so even if you don't buy it they did improve the game.
Gonna subscribe, but I'd wholeheartedly recommend the legend of the kestrel lancers DLC, Everything feels pretty new and the story is pretty good!

Great review, but I'm a bit confused by your statement at 12:35. From what I can recall, there is not a single Battletech RPG out there aside from maybe the first Westwood Battletech game from 1988, and that game's classification as an RPG is a bit dubious. And the vast majority of the other Battletech games are real-time, not turn based. The only two turn-based games that I know are the previously mentioned game by Westwood, and the 2017 Battletech from Harebrained Schemes. The MechWarrior, MechAssault and MechCommander games are all real-time games, unless I'm missing something.
Still don't know how they fucked up multi player.
Each player should bring four mechs. One of each type, light, medium, heavy, assault.
Mission briefing, then each player picks mech.
YOU DO NOT USE HOSTS RESOURCES. Your mechs repair comes from your save.
Huh, I dunno how it's for consoles but as for PC, the base game costs 5 usd + 3-7 usd for each dlc. Considering the fact it's a game you could easily spend 100+ hours in, it's a fair trade

Great review mate. Concise, straight to the point and good humor too. Now, the reason i don't like this game is the graphics. Im a BIG Battletech fan and played the heck out of it and i have to say, for a game 5 years older than MW5 it sure looks better. It's like the graphics of this game are stuck in the early 2010s. The terrain looks bland, the lighting is basic, no atmospheric effects, no weather, no bloom, no solar glow and the people look like they are straight from the PS3 era. Now sure, the gameplay looks great and you have some nice weapon effects, but the levels look so empty and lifeless and the cities, like you said, are very basic, don;t have logical infrastructure like roads, trains, random vehicles parked outside, something to make the cities look more lived in and not just some destructible cubic buildings...
Sure, if you are a die hard MW fan, you will look past the gfx, but for me, i just like my games to look pretty and also have good gameplay. Anyway, i might give this a shot if i can get it with a hefty discount.

I just ordered my PS5 and Mech 5. I can't F'n wait till it gets here. I'm a Mech Warrior O.G. I ran it on an apple back in 1990. My former wife hated the game because it was more fun than she was, LOLOLO..............
I played this some last month and played it for a long time back in 20 and 21. I enjoyed it but it had two major flaws. First is I feel the Mech customization rules are too limiting. IMO adding things like Jump Jets should be allowed on every Mech and variant. The second is that at the time the game was made there was only one official design from the era the story campaign starts that fit the three criteria of my favorite Mechs (Jump Jet Equipped Heavy class, with only offensive energy weapons though ammo based defenses are tolerable).
But it had lousy firepower for its size and isn't in the game. So to get something that I really like before the in game calendar rolls around to 3040 I have to leave a weapon hardpoint empty which I hate doing. To make matters worse there's a Mech variant in the game where when playing the tabletop campaign I can easily retrofit it to meet all three criteria just by removing some armor and adding jump jets but the PC/Console game won't let me add jump jets to the Mech in question

Great game. What frustrates me though is the lack of the battle lines moving on the map. So, im playing on career but i feel there is no goal. Earn money. Buy bigger mechs. Im playing on XBox series X. I have all the DLC. I imagine there is a mod on PC to create a dynamic map.

For those of us familiar with PGI and it's general douchery it came as no surprise that they absconded to exclusivity with pre-orders already in hand after a few successful rounds of hype and general corporate begging. So there was that fiasco. Which handily goes some way toward explaining how MW5 ended up hollow, repetitive, and ultimately low effort dross (even after EGS showered with the much "needed" guaranteed money). Clearly that money went to good use... That the DLC was on offer to give players things that could/should have been in on launch was no mistake and PGI's usual behavior of double dipping it's already niche crowd. When you realize that a fair bit of the game was copy paste ripped from their already existing title MWO... Well you get the picture, I hope. The upside to all this is that now the game is out in the wild modders have taken up the saintly mantle of making the game more than the usual bovine excrement PGI can barely manage to cobble together. Is the base game worth it... on it's own no. That said, modded heavily the game is incredibly fun and full featured... for free. So at the end of the day, take a page from PGI the creators and give them the long hard one with no lube and enjoy yourself... they absolutely have.
If you have played Mechwarrior 3 or 4 to completion, you would know why this one is """Underrated""".
Nice job, my man. Comprehensive, well-considered and accessible. Once you shake-off the bit of stiffness that comes with being relatively new on the scene, you should do quite well.
i'd suggest giving mech warrior 4 mercinaries a go, just to comapre. at least if there's a decent way you can try it out.

@@Psykadea yeah it's an older game and the graphics show that but i've played that campaign through multiple times years ago. over the course of years that is, fortunately for it blocky graphics works alright for the mechs. still enjoy the soundtrack and teh team ai is surprisingly good for the era. missions have a good variety, plus there's solaris.

All the comments about nostalgia for the Mechwarrior games of the 90's...how many people even know about Mechwarrior Online? It's been around ten years but is still a very active community, all the giant stompy robot action you could ask for and free to play.
I am SUPER glad I stumbled on this game! I got it for an ABSOLUTE steal, and I can see sinking hundreds of hours into this.
Compared to MW4, this game just isn't the same.
All the maps feel the same, just have different textures for different biomes. They don't feel thought out and are random generated like the missions in MW4. There's no map or mission brief before starting a mission. There were little cutscenes and a linear, logical progression to the campaign. There, each mission felt thought out. There was a theme that the game designers were going for with each mission.
There's way less customization to mechs. MW4 you could put AMS, ECM, and BAP on almost every mech, choose how much power you want the engine to have, and even what kind of armor you want your mech to have. Here I tend to stick with something very close to the default configuration of each mech usually.
This game has way less personality and gets very repetitive super fast.
I really liked you're video, mechassault 1 & 2 were my introduction it battletech then MWO then i discovered MW5M on gamepass. Got real reparative real fast but with mods and the dlc its everything i dreamed of as a kid .
Playing SRM Agincourt is feels like playing doom but without jumping.
If ypu've only played vanilla, I would recommend trying it again with mods. Nexus mods has a plethora of fun things to add and try and you'll have even more toys and fun things to play with.
New DLC so need to review again
I wanted to like this game so much, but it gave me motion sickness. There's no way to turn off or lower the headbob, and it takes out the weapon-group toggling controls that are a lot easier for me manual dexterity wise than using multibutton mice. GREAT gameplay, mediocre story, great graphics. I'd have loved it if it wasn't for the graphics and cotrols issues.
Exclusivity in the video game world is one of my biggest hatreds. Why limit something to a smaller group of people!? video games were treated more like passion projects and workd of art, rather than business models like most are treated now. Sure some games are real passion projects still, and you know which ones those are.
I randomly came across a gameplay video by Magz of this game. Like you, I had no idea it existed, but was immediately engrossed and can't wait to play it once I have a better PC.
Got this game 3 Days ago with all the dlcs for around 40€ and have already played 20 hours. It is really a great game now. On Pc you have the mods (duh!) that makes the game even better.
But i think even on Consoles the game will shine with the dlcs now. When the game got released on Gamepass i found it boring after a while and the sound of most weapons really are not enough but it got better with the dlcs and mods.
This game is such a downgrade from MW4 Mercenaries it is ridiculous. Everything is worse except the graphics
its a good game. but playing it without mods is just... i dunno. i mean the AI improvement mod alone makes it so much better. enemy mechs regrouping, hiding behind cover and running away when overwhelmed just makes the basegame look unfinished.
Poor coop implantation and lack of mechs when compared to 4. I thought it was fun my bf thought otherwise. Probably because he likes clan mechs.
MWO is better imo, and free still receives updates to, we just got a new map last month and another one on the way, for a game that is almost 10 years old it still has thousands of players, were other mecha games like hawken have aged like milk, MWO has aged like a fine wine, PLAY MWO!
Mechwarrior games were what I loved most in the 90’s golden era of PC gaming. I finally got a gaming rig so I can play this. Maybe the wait was a good thing since the DLC packs and ray tracing effects are out there now. I waited way too long for a Mechwarrior game.
Nah, I hate it. It feels so lame, the terrain feels like paper or some shit. I don't know how to explain it. I hate the engine they are using, reminds me of mechwarrior online too much. It just feels like trash to me. The replayability is terrible. You never really get to be in terrain.. like never in the mountains, its just like empty boxes of terrain and box cities. it SUCKS!
This game is not worth to be played without mods. You do allways the same in every misson. They say do this or that but in the end you have to kill everybody all the time. There is no way to play tactical, endless waves of enemies spawn in the middle of your team or in your back. It doesnt matter that you came from there killing everything and everyone.
Your AI-Teammates are barebrained stupid like 5 squaremeters gras. As an example: You have to defend a base and all your team runs into this base and crush in every building they see on the way but when you have to raid an enemy base your team carefully moves around the base taking care for every building and realy seldom, when they get bored to shoot every part of an enemy excluded the ones the enemy would die, a random shot hits a building. Your part is to brawl every time-every mission, because the AI is unable get enemys down for felt hours and your team-mechs get striped every second the enemy melt around on them.... and did i told you, you pay for the repair? Another point: You try to headshot an enemy but mostly the indicator jumps only to red condition while the pilot should had wings instand, because you alpha´d the cockpit with 2 large and 6 medium lasers or many, many short range missiles on short, short distance. Sorry, this game is either underrated nor a gem.
I love this game so much, I simply cannot stop making c-bills. Wish there was a base or something I could build up.
It eventually came to Xbox? The latest version I played was MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries expansion, and it looks like it's finally time to get back in, thanks for wasting countless future hours of my life, it looks beautiful
a couple years late but did start playing this game a agree with everything you say and idk if you mentioned but late game the game forces you to use assault mechs (obviously) which drastically increases the traversal time in missions like beachhead, raid and assassination which i find particularly annoying especially late game beachhead where having 4 assault mechs is a must meaning that you'll get bombarded by artillery almost indefinitely.

man i have to disagree about Beach head missions. best designed missions? god they are awful. they are the only missions that you can't devise your own plan for. you have to follow their steps step by step. and why the actual F*CK would you put mechs on the ground with all that artillery still intact... good god, bomb them with aerospace fighters or something. absolutely no reason artillery like that should still be operational when you put expensive mechs on the ground. they aren't designed to fight artillery, they are designed to take out other mechs and tanks and occupy strategic locations. i love the other stuff in the DLC, but that is a crap mission type that makes absolutely zero sense. best designed mission? what?

getting all the DLCs will give you full experience. when we got it when it was new on epic it was pretty bland. I'm replaying it nonstop since the Legends DLC and its now tremendously better. I've been waiting decades for a real Battletech sim experience and this is it. oh by the way, I still hate the campaign story. just go straight to career mode. and OH YEAH, being able to switch from one lancemate to another at any time makes the game waaaay more enjoyable. it now makes sense to have a lighter mech on your team instead of the super boring all assault lance. recon now makes sense! and melee attacks! wohoooo!

ok. just had to turn off my computer for a couple of minutes. not just a restart. really turn it off . now it works but now i have another problem. i bought an assasin with endosteel and an
xl-engine. i took it out to put it in another mech, but both just vanished. completly gone. any idea why? thx upfront for help.
He covered everything but yes is mostly underrated by most fans because it doesnt bring that people expected at the time. Even though i do have to agree there is thing that should have been there by default like cantinas for example. More mission variety which is mostly the same one. It would also be nice to remove riana out of communication and now that i mention that there should be more communication between bitching betty which is computer voice with the player. Like in previous mechwarrior game that computer will always tell you stuff whats going on your mech in this game doesnt tell you if you lose a heat sink for example. It will tell you if you lose weapons but not everything else. Also doesnt tell you any armor critical warnings so when your shot at and focusing you targets, you wouldnt be able to realize some part of the mech is open in which thats the communication of the computer for the player. As the review is done right there isnt much to do in it other than keep trying builds and pray to god your AI lancemates stop fucking up your mechs.
