  • My second time reading A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway. You can almost feel his “energy” (for the lack of a better word), both ends of the spectrum in a way, when you read this book. Nothing but praise and a ton of empathy for the master of language.
Empathy because “...his façade was a defense against the instability stirring within.”

This one does justice for Hemingway. A very true account of him. Good review!

It's really very interesting to read through Hemingway's books after reading and learning more about him. There's a very good 5 part documentary that came out about two years ago, that covers his whole life, the history of depression and suicide in his family, his strained relationship with his mother, what seemed like a bit of gender dysphoria/attraction towards a more feminine side, also how he was set to marry a nurse that had cared for him when he was wounded in the first world war, but abandoned him for another man. And all of these points come up in his work, even things that weren't publicly known till well after his death.
For example in For Whom The Bell Tolls the main character talks and reflects very often about his father's suicide (Hemingway's father committed suicide)
A Farewell to Arms covers an injured American soldier's relationship with a nurse.
The Garden of Eden hints often at a strong masculine character's represded sexuality and gender identity.
And of course alcoholism is present in just about everyone of his books.
To put a long story short, its fascinating to read his books with the kind of insight into his life that you mention. It certainly adds a lot to it!

Surely going to check out the documentary you mentioned. Thank you for that recommendation.
It was truly shocking when I got to know more about his life and how much he battled with depression and also bipolar. A Moveable Feast is so heavily packed with that stuff, one has to just read between the lines.

Yeah, that's true! It definitely gives a sense of melancholy to his work, knowing what's behind it and what awaits him.

Beautiful review as always. I have read 'old man and the sea' but did not knew what Hemingway was going through, your video motivated me to research about his life, I will surely read about him.

It's very sad what he went through, and not many talk about it. Weird but not surprising.
Thank you for dropping by and sharing your thoughts. ❤❤

A Moveable Feast has basically vanished from my mind, whereas Down and Out in Paris and London by Orwell has stuck in it. Maybe you are right about rereading the former.

Haha. I can relate but, trust me, once you just get into it, the habit can be addictive. Really.

This is on my TBRR list, will get to it later this year. As I'm getting more and more involved with animal rights, I find his safaris and corridas less and less to my liking, but something tells me his Moveable Feast is still enjoyable.
On a possibly unrelated note, recently I re-read The Great Gatsby, and finally understood, at long last, why it is a great book.

Oh yes, I think the feeling is mutual. I don't think I can get myself to read his Green Hills of Africa and those kinds of works. Just because.
A Moveable Feast, however, belongs to a whole other genre. Wonderful writing and, to a certain extent, very touching reading material.
Only after re-reads am I able to grasp the TRUE, and sometimes even hidden, meaning of classics. The Great Gatsby most definitely will be a part of that experience.

So sad and tragic I know. After getting to know about Hemingway and his life, you somehow absorb his works differently too.

I can only give you unconventional, unusual, and maybe even twisted "love story" recommendations (sorry about that). But I loved reading them!! The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera and Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata. I have a few more, so if you like these, come back and I shall mention them.
