James Taylor's Advice For Young Songwriters
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 лют 2020
- Though he didn't take his own advice as a young songwriter, legendary musician James Taylor advises those just starting out to pick an existing song they like and, without stealing it, use it as a template upon which to craft a new original tune. Listen to Taylor share stories from the beginning of his career on his new Audible audiobook memoir titled "Break Shot." #Colbert #Comedy #JamesTaylor

One of the loves of my life. His music is so sad to me as it was when my parents were together and all they did was drink and fight and be abusive but then james Taylor would come on and I was transported away to a safe warm place. Thank you sir
They used to always play his music on the radio, on the soft rock love music stations. I remember my mom as a hairstylist, and the song would play in the hair salon radio... We were broke and poor, and listening to James Taylor’s songs would _instantly_ put me at ease and uplift me.. especially during the Reagan days when my mom and I were once homeless.
mai they are bitter sweet as I listen and i am transported back to hell but then I smile as he feels like home to me. ❤️
The very thing you describe is happening with me right now, and James Taylor's music is saving me too. I feel you. So sorry about what you went through.
Karan Gera thank you. It gets better ❤️
James Taylor is a great musician. And legend.
Yes he is, some of the most iconic musicians.
I feel sad through out the interview. Wish you well Mr Taylor. You've given me lots of joy with your music.
Words can’t even begin to describe how much I absolutely cherish and adore this man and his iconic, timeless music!
JT is a national treasure that we shall protect at all costs.
James Taylor has the same sweet, sweet soul as Michael Stipe.
living legend
When Armstrong stepped on the moon in 69, I was at a drive-in theater watching 2001 A Space Odyssey, with the full moon just left of the screen, when a guy announced over the car speakers "Armstrong has just stepped on the moon"! The scene of the movie was, finding the monolith on the moon. Cool!
Dude ... wow!
THAT my friend is a hard story to beat !
Awesome memory
@Kaptain Kid Thank you for your service, Sir, and I agree that it was a useless war.
@Kaptain Kid 1 year later... I may have been the guy that was your replacement....
So... take a sad song, and make it better?
Only if you can let her under your skin.
Then you begin to make it better!
Hey dude don’t be afraid
I've seen James Taylor in concert many times, in venues large and small. He's always been a total professional, giving excellent performances even in difficult cirumstances. At one point circa 1979 he subbed at a club in Boston for Carly Simon, his wife at the time. (She was sick--probably with stage fright.) He played a full set on his own and did a heroic job.
My man looks good here. Wishing you continued health and success Mr. James, you've helped me through some tough times!
He was the first concert I ever saw, and I GOT TO SHAKE HIS HAND! I was nine years old, my mom and i went to see him in Dallas and during the song I wanna STOP and thank you Baby! I just wanna STOP ✋ and thank you BA BAY; we ran up past security and I remember telling my mom, “were gonna get in trouble!! I dont wanna get in trouble!!” But she held my hand and kept running for the stage and when we got to it she tried to lift me but couldn’t really get me up, and there was a huge man with a big beard and he looked down and lifted me up on his shoulders and my mom smiled and i smiled and shook James Taylor’s hand and enjoyed the rest of that song which is still one of my favs to this day... then the tall bearded man gave me back to my mom and after lots of excited thanks and more dancing, the concert was ended... but I will never forget that.
To this day my mom tells me, honey you’ve just always had that personality of “never met a stranger” and I’m like yea mom, maybe it’s because you used to hand me off to strangers like they were old friends! 😂
What an artist. James Taylor is an excellent composer & lyricist, and one of the all around great finger-style guitarists.
His music has greatly enriched my life.
Thanks, James.
Thanks, Stephen.
Allen Hare
Leo Kottke is my favorite finger guitarist, but I also love James Taylor for his guitar and songs.
It was lucky it was a full moon on that day - it probably made it easier to land on.
Kotow Boy yep indeed, a bigger target is always a good thing.
🤣
lol
What a humbling experience to be in the presence of a legend... very few singers and songwriters could ever copy the heart and soul that he puts in every song he has written. Thank you for your music, Mr. James Taylor.
my uncle taught me how to play guitar, his idol was james taylor, so james taylor is also my idol,
"you got a friend" will always remind me of my favourite uncle r.i.p alex
James Taylor's part of my DNA! Go Bernie! I love y'all!

JAMES TAYLER- _ALWAYS AND FOREVER.._
🔥❤️🔥
I had the immense pleasure of seeing him in concert a number of years ago at Massey Hall in Toronto. No pretension, no over-the-top production - just great, honest music laid out perfectly.
What a sincerely lovely man
Best interview I’ve watched in a decade!
Was waiting for the classic James and Stephen duet, I‘m not okay with this 😭
He’s just keeping it real. 💯 of these artists do copy each other’s work. If not their work, they copy each other’s persona
He reminds me of a character from the movie Shawshank Redemption, with the style of clothes etc.
What a sweet man
I’m one of the millions of people who have never met this man ... but I love him. I had the privilege to see him in concert in Sydney in 1981. Mona, Mona, so much of you to love, too much of you to take care of, Mona, Mona.”
The man, the legend.
James Taylor was the first concert I saw (that wasnt classical or jazz..my parents were music educators). Such an amazing performance!!!
My idol
Best advice ever. Super practical AND creative.
this is so wonderful :)
taylor's role model and musical inspiration was the great tom rush who actually did a cover of 'something in the way she moves' which helped get him on the radar screen...check out the 50 year career of rush...
that's just too honest LOL
His idea for learning to write songs is very interesting. I just listened to the two songs mentioned toward the end of this video and they don't sound anything alike! So when you're first starting, this might work! Great musician.
James Taylor and Steve Vai are real, down to earth musicians
Bonjour James🍃 from Paris 🇫🇷 France 🇫🇷 See you soon in Olympia Music-hall in Paris 🎶🎵
My heart and mind are now flooded with memories of a kind of music that can only come from James Taylor.
George "borrowed" "Something in the way she moves" !
That template Taylor talks about also works when writing prose. Find a writer’s work you admire and follow its template and you will find your original story :)
Legend
Love JT. What a voice! And what a singer song writer he is.
Wow, that was actually helpful.
James Taylor singing with Oscar the Grouch on the rooftop on Sesame Street is a must see. Instead of "Your smiling face" they reworked it in to "Your Grouchy Face". The lyrics, Oscar's eyebrows, the penny whistle guy - it is just pure gold.
I like this interview.
I love james taylor
Love me some JT!🎸
Meanwhile, transported in time, he could write about the "Frozen man" when to transport Two Generations of healing, takes thought and wisdom, I'd say he did a great job, at the time, he didn't know what he had done, Congratulations James, Fine Job Sir! I tried as well.
Wow, former president James Taylor.
Great advice I'm going to write a song
That interview was way too short!
Lineup for the Newport Folk Festival for Sunday, July 20, 1969 (alphabetically by first name):
Bernice Johnson Reagon
Happy and Artie Traum
James Taylor
Jean Ritchie
Jerry Jeff Walker
Jesse Fuller
John Hartford
Len Chandler
Pete Seeger
Ramblin’ Jack Elliott
Son House
Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee
The Pentangle
Van Morrison
That's an iconic lineup.
I'm an old song writer, but somehow I was still able to click the link! I can't believe I'm getting away with this.
We don't have anyone like that today. That's a fact. Why? Is it even possible?
I think Jon should have done the interview
I agree; I think he would have asked very different questions. :)
He also played guitar for Homer Simpson and Buzz Aldrin while they were stuck in space.
I’m so glad he said that method. I know how to do that.
David Lane
_So cool, right? Never thought of that!_
mai take a song. Change it up like you’re singing harmony, then change the beat then put lyrics that make you feel the same way but are different.
It's strange how much his voice and mimics reminds me of Steve Jobs.
What's with all the strange cuts?
Well, that was awkward.
JT!!!! ♥️
I sent a note to James in Virginia Beach asking him if he'd send out good vibes, I asked my ex to marry me at his show. I understand why but he didn't do it.
And now you know .....
Every Song has its Season: ua-cam.com/video/MAnWTLFIRI0/v-deo.html Enjoy
George Harrison must have taken Taylor's advice when he wrote "My Sweet Lord" using The Chiffons' "He’s So Fine" as a ‘trajectory'🧐
Wired Weird - Or "Something" after Taylor's "Something In The Way She Moves." Was waiting for him to mention that.
He reminds me of Abe Lincoln on a musical career path.
I think Britney Spears used a Christmas song as a template. Obviously, she didn’t turn it into another Christmas song.
Ayy
"Do this."
"Is that what you did?"
"No I didn't do that."
*is wildly successful*
"But you should do it."
ok.
It’s funny I never liked either one of them until this interview.
Valmor
I’m curious to know why you would watch something with two people you don’t like.
Heh heh... Heh heh... Ween.
The moon was not full during the moon landing.
I hiked out of the Grand Canyon the night before and I didn't have a flashlight. It was like a dream.
I've never heard of him
wow bs
Never go full loco! That's my advice.
Or the next thing you will know is to be jibber jabbing with the army and navy.... And big box stores..
And just in case, should you fall at odds with the ruling elites and authorities of your nation, then make sure that you aren't on Mr. Gates short-list. I didn't and as a result, i was in limbo for months..
Still cant believe a missed something so simple and not very ordinary at all.

You mean the fake moon landing. I will paint it. Remind me.
Im a huge JT fan, never cared for Colbert due to his constant political material. Now I can add the fact he is a horrible interviewer to the reason why. Wow, horrible questions and just awkward all around. Way to completely screw that up

I love SC, but Seth Meyers is definitely the best interviewer of late night, with Trevor Noah right behind him.
@@maryrosekent8223 I honestly haven't sat down and watched them due to their constant political rants, however I do respect your opinion...I watched this based on my love for James Taylor. I just prefer to be entertained without the need to bring politics into it, it seems to be inescapable nowadays

Got it.
