The more you show how useful draw knives and crook knives can be, the more I want to learn to make stuff from my environment rather than packing it all in. my humble thanks to you sir.
Dave, I believe that is the cleverest tool and set-up I have seen as of yet.
That would make a Hell of a Fire Board for a Bow drill.........Just Sayin'
Just received my draw knife and it’s awesome. It incredibly sharp, right out of the box. Nice work, Dave!
Dave you just made my day big time! Because of the very limited space where i live and my financial situation. A regular shavehorse is not an option, and I have really been wondering and looking for a solution to hold my piece of wood so i can work it with my draw knife. This is perfect! It May seem like a small or insignificant Thing to some people, but I REALLY enjoy Carving. And This is something i have really Been needing, so you sharing This video brings me great Joy and some peace of mind, so atruly heart felt thank you!
monday im going to Huldreheimen fishing and enjoying the rest of the year outdoors, you have given me some good knowledge i did not know and you have showed me many other ways of doing things i did know and i wanted to thank you.
Beautifully economic way to hold the wood. I was going to say simple, but functionally, its just as sophisticated as a shave horse where it matters.
damn i'm a simple man. love simple stuff like that.
Thanks Dave
Oh, I have got to get me one of those little draw knives for my bow project! Awesome video, thanks for sharing.
Dave, I'm a city boy, but a city boy who carves. I'm not too modest to say I'm handy with a draw knife and that pocket draw knife is outstanding. Size, shape, and it's 1095 steel. Pushing 70 years, I haven't got the time or strength to learn how to make one (wife's oven is off limits), so I just have to be envious. 1095 steel! Not everyone knows about it. I have my uncle's WWII Navy Cattaraugus that he wore (let's say it was for sharks) and it is great.
Your rebar vise is good for relatively stationary wood, but I'll look again at your rope and log shaving setup, because the work I have to do requires constant adjustments. (3 foot dry hardwood walking cane shafts) I have the log lengths, all I have to do is secretly roll them into the basement.
I'm subscribing to your channel; most of the other "Bushcraft" channels are same old, same old. I made fire with sticks about 57 years ago.
that draw knife was razor sharp ; thank you for sharing .
Exellent improvisation horse and knife ...me respect
DAAAAVVEEEE!!!!! That is the coolest looking draw knife. Now that's bushcraft cool! Seen this on the site, its a steal too.. Thanks Dave!
Thanks for the video & Happy Canada Day Brian 76
awesome vid - "there is a right tool for right job"- my grandfather always said
I appreciate all of the knowledge you share in your videos very much. Thank you.
That was an excellent video Dave! That little drawknife performed amazingly well!!
Dave, you are a great teacher! thanks for video... Bill
This is too funny, I just bought your packable draw knife last week and should get it today or tomorrow. And I see today you made a video on this. Sometimes I feel I am so in tune with this channel. Thanks for your dedication to continue to put out these videos. Have a great Independence Day...
Thanks once again Dave for a great instructional video!!
You can hear the blade biting, that's awesome!! good vid. thanks.
Another great video Super Dave! I hope you and the family have a happy 4th and thanks for sharing your knowledge. God bless
This man is well worth listening to! How much do they cost. I have internet problems and I can’t access anyone’s website…
that is a PERFECT sized draw knife :)
Great Tool Dave and nice vise you have there.
Thanks for the knowledge you share and teach us!Good advice!
That Draw Knife is sickk! Gotta get me one!! Keep it up Hoss!
I like that alot. totally need one that size too. very nice Dave
Thanks Dave, great idea...
Thats a brilliant device. I can imagine creating something similar using wood for the cross pieces to protect your project as it comes close to a finished surface.
Totally love the packable drawknife.
Real Nice Dave!! I like it!!
that little thing eats wood man, wow. nicely done Dave....like the impromptu shavehorse as well.
A miniature cleaving brake. Great idea! This takes the leg work out of using a traditional shave horse too.
Good one Dave, thanks!
Sweet! You have a 90 degree edge for fire making and other things too.
Excellent idea!!
Great video would you ever consider doing a homestead tour???
Great points and information thanks much !!
excellent, thanks Dave :)
Thanks buddy!!!
Great idea.
I can see that being extremely helpful in some survival situations. A survival situation can arise from breaking a gunstock at the wrong time, and a drawknife makes carving a new gunstock a heck of a lot faster and easier. The vise is a good idea, too. I've used a downed tree by cutting out a section a bit longer than the length of the piece I needed to shave, and using a wedge to keep it in place, and make getting it in and out of the cut, and turning it, easier. It's a good trick, if you have nothing better at hand, but your wedge system would certainly involve a lot less work, and be more effective. Edit to add it may be my computer, or this blasted Edge browser, but after about the three minute mark on this video, I can't hear a thing.
Great video
Nice!
Great product! I like the toggle idea. When is your cook book coming out?
Never heard of rebar staples, but good idea. For the points, do you go with round points or chisel points?
I have a couple of straight drawknives that need sharpening. Not one of my better skills. I have some dry or semi dry maple. Is it possible to be able to practice carving on them in some way if I can just properly sharpen my straight drawknives and carving tools somehow?
muito bom essa ferramenta
great video thanks for sharing:)
Hi Dave!
I was wondering if you know anything about Richard Proenneke. I was assuming that you would, but you know what they say about assuming. The reason I ask about Richard is that I hoped you might be able to showcase types of skills he might have used; or more specifically wood working techniques. I love the videos you make, keep going!
Thanks!
John
nice tool
Is that packable draw knife available through your store?
great video, but you can use the draw knife to make really thin curls for fire starting, these could be even better than using your knife due to the larger sizes you can make and they can be worked to provide more surface area for your birds nest.
Dave do you have a video of how to making a Hunting Shirt?
great product...I cant seem to find those rebar staples anywhere....any ideas?
WOW !!!
great video i might buy one or make one depends great video thoe
son of a bitch. thats brilliant! I gotta get me one of those. great design and thanks for the video
Dave I hope you don't mind but I'm gonna nick that idea/design to make myself a similar draw knife for my Bergen, I am impressed with that and a nice little Sycamore behind you, ideal for carving eating utensils as the wood is light and contains no toxins, great channel mate keep up the good work, regards from ol Blighty, atb, Paul.
+Neanderthal62 Outdoors actually that is a Tulip Poplar
+wildernessoutfitters Yeh that's what I thought it was, a Tulip Poplar hehe
pretty good one should make a video of carving a tomahawk handle
Great video brother! My question is can you tell when using an old file or something of that nature if it 1095 or 1075 steel. is there a tell tail sign or way of testing to see if the steel is any good for tools suck as these?
*such* not suck! this is a sweet little tool!

I mean to be helpful, not a smart-a**. Well, I AM a smart-a**, but not right now. ;o)
Genius
I like the tunes, the video, and the knife. Is it for hollowing out?
I apologize up front for the AQing (armchair quarterbacking) that I'm about to do. It is not intended as criticism. My dad gave me "The Art of Blacksmithing" and I've read it, and would like to get into blacksmithing, but haven't had the chance yet (you see - AQ). It said that for a more even quenching on knife blades, they should go into the quenching medium horizontally, so the blade edge hits the medium at the same time, and any variation goes across the blade instead of along it. Just my 1¢.
I've subscribed, and I'm looking forward to learning more from your videos. Keep up the good work.
Where could I purchase a draw knife like that?
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹👍👍👍
Question can you custom forge set of climbing gaffs for me i will pay well all others i have asked have not responded at least i know you read your. Q&a. Or can i take the forging class. You see im an amputee. Its not hard to do but i dont have the equptment. Thank you
I've noticed in a couple of your recent videos that you've been using pigskin leather for some things, instead of cow hide leather. Is there a particular reason for this? Cost? Where do you even get pigskin?
From a Pig?
Do you sell them
What the heck now isn't that simple stupid wow. Thanks for sharing
You got cows, Dave?
That is one sharp draw knife
bought the draw knife for my dad and it came absolutely filthy. My hands were literally black after unpacking it. I like the knife but the shape it arrived in was terrible.
These are hand made and Oiled at the shop, they are very reasonably priced for hand made items and more cleaning and using clean oil before packing costs more money in process and adds cost to the knife, I think most folks would rather wipe a bit of dirty oil off than to receive a rusty blade or pay 10.00 more? Sorry for your experience brother and I will speak to my guys about it just the same-
agreed Dave, but good on ya all the same
