I'm back at the beach after a few weeks visiting with family and friends in my hometown. I have noticed many people may have the wrong idea about how to approach surf fishing in our area, so I want to address how you can do it in a more effective and successful way!
Also, this is my first video with the new GoPro Hero 7 Black. It's really cool but the audio from the GoPro isn't conducive for the beach because of all the mics picking up the noise from the surf. I have ordered a mic and hope this will solve the issue, but for now I apologize for the audio issues.

Can I suggest on the dropper closest to your sinker. Make it much longer say 6-10 inches past the sinker so it rolls round in the surf. The large whiting love it

You said it just right, BBB, about TARGETING particular species. That's the key to fishing in the area, whether in the surf or from the pier. I've been catching them (whiting) up to 18 inches in December, mostly on pink fishbites and shrimp pieces - same as you're doing. Hoping for weather to calm down and for the water to clear up. Keep up the good videos. They're entertaining and instructive.

You couldn't be more right. I live near Dauphin Island. When I surf fish, I always bring 2 setups. One for throwing out biiig chunks of bait in hopes of a massive Drum/shark or anything that gives a fight and another setup for basic surf fishing. Just yesterday, couldn't get any hits on live croaker, cut mullet, etc. Then I hoooked into my PB black drum on a Pompano rig with a size 8 J hook on 8lb test using a piece of a FishBites the size of a penny while trying to target whiting. The fight was crazy fun on that light tackle! The surf on DI has been rough..zero whiting. I definitely gotta try the surf in Gulf Shores. Tight lines, love to support a local YT channel!

I got to go to Gulf Shores a couple years ago for summer vacation. I'm from Oklahoma and had never fished in the Gulf. Bought some fish bites from the store. My buddy and me caught enough of those whiting (the size you were keeping) to fill a small ice chest every day we fished. Only problem is we didn't know what they were since we had never been there before. Looked like something you'd throw back here in Oklahoma. Lol. Last day I was there I decided to sit down and look up what they were. Once I told my buddy we had been throwing away keepers we had a good laugh about it. Haven't made it back since to catch anymore.

have to be clear we're talking a specific area. maybe some newbies won't get that. the North Carolina coast for instance... definitely the bread and butter fish is going to be croaker/whiting, spots and pompano with some small flounder almost all the time except for dead winter... but the fall and spring run is well known for drum and bluefish and everyone is heading out with big tackle.

    • @BamaBeachBum
      @BamaBeachBum  5 років тому +4

Yes, that’s why I was specific when I said northern Gulf Coast. Fishing in other areas are obviously completely different. But same principle applies in the overall theme of the idea in that you need to target what is present and not try to force a square peg in a round hole.

Bama Beach Bum i have to admit I was doing it wrong back when I first started out. but finally figured out (NC beaches) that most of the fish I was hoping for were feeding close to the beach on sand crabs and other delicious stuff being turned up by the waves ...and I have to show up just before sunrise. oh yeah cut the bait a lit smaller. 1/3 inch pieces of shrimp or blood worms usually caught enough for a fish fry within a couple hours. now I'm in Bali and totally confused again. love your channel and hope your sub base grows a lot in the New Year.

You nailed it Bama Beach Bum Buddy! Like I been tellin folks for years "often 95% of the fish in the surf zone weigh less than a pound. IF you target those you will likely have much more catching action. And when you do hook one of those 5% fish, it will be an epic battle!" Even 'Potlickin' the pier can be fun sometimes ;-) lol

  • @txbonefish

Here in Texas, I started to tie 6 hook leaders. Using a video you had up about "how to tie Pompano rigs" I took that knot and just made the tag shorter and more hooks. I use a kahle hook on the smaller side and no beads on 30 and 50# mono with mainly fishbites. Dude I literally use this rig for everything in the surf. Reds love it, Pompano love it, Black Drum love it, I've caught 5 and 6 Whiting at a time and the same with Sand Trout in the bay. It works so good I have folks stop and ask me about the rigs. I make like 100+ of these rigs sometimes and sell them as I fish on the beach. I have one video up of a drum I caught with one of these rigs. I need to invest in a body cam to get my UA-cam channel going. But yeah, Love your videos buddy.

I don't know anything about fishing, but was considered for the lead as a piece of bait in a school play. Plan to move to Mobile County round August, was thinking of learning to catch Shrimp and Mullet (I throw a small net well (Physical Therapy), just don't fish). It would be a bonus to get a few Whiting while wading for mullet. If someone could help with some questions I wouldn't be so dumb. How far out/deep do these Whiting hang out? Can't see how far you are casting on my screen. Can they be seen in the surf? Are they fast? Could they be cast netted in the surf sight throwing, like for mullet? Will they gather at a chum tube in surf? Is a 1 and 1/4" mesh to big? Any info. appreciated. Thanks.

I go to Destin every year for vacation and me and my wife fish the beach a lot. It’s always the last week of October and we do o k but it’s mostly Whiting. I catch Reds here and there but no size to them. What’s the best lure or bait for this time of the year. Love your videos keep um coming I’ve learned a lot.

I don’t have a surf rod but I only go to the beach about once a year and don’t think it’s worth the money at the moment but this video helped a lot on setup wise

It’s the best chance we’ve had in the last several days. The surf conditions look more favorable and there is less of a chance of storms.

I had a blast in Destin catching Small Pompano with my Scott 6wt. streamer rod. Smallmouth/Trout tackle in the surf.

I saw your paid links to equipment. Is this what you only use or are you using different rods and reels? I was looking at a ugly stix surf rod 12 ft and daiwa 4500 reel. Wondering if that is a good combo. Also how do you choose the right size rod? #brandnew

You're living the life good sir! Just subbed to your channel and really enjoying watching your videos. Daydreaming about being out of Indiana so I can get my toes in the sand, waves at my feet, and fish as the ocean waves crash down.
If you're ever in Indiana and want to change up to fish for big blue, flatheads, Channel catfish, etc drop me a line

Hey man, love your videos. Just moved to NW Florida and I am learning a lot about fishing these waters from you. Question about your gear: I've been looking for beads and those small floats you use (like on the rig in this video and your pompano rigs). What size beads do you use? Also, where can I get some of those floats, or which do you buy and mod for your rigs?

Its called a fish bite, they are artificial baits and they work pretty good, they have a piece of cloth in the middle of them so they stay on your hooks a lot better than others do.

We share the whiting passion at least some of us down in south Texas. My Dad and I love the whiting best eating, fun to catch.
