This is a technique that Renaissance painters used. One of the most prominent of his era was El Greco of Greece in Spain. (16th and 17th centuries). His paintings were hung high above tall entrances and doors and the perspective of the person below was to see the painting in perfect proportions while from a distance a horse for example would have a very deep belly that disappeared once that person was closer underneath the painting looking up. It all depended on where a painting was to be hung. El Greco is famous for this particular technique.
