Those might be the three that I end up with as well. I do need a 50 mm focal length for a lot of actor self tapes so I’m having a hard time, deciding on the 35 in apsc mode for those or getting the actual 50. There is something really nice looking about footage from the 50 but it might just be a waste of money. Do you have any thoughts?
The Sigma 85mm is incredible (I think we’ve both fangirled over that lens before haven’t we?) 🤣 but for the price and the weight saving, it’s really hard not to go with the Panasonic 85mm. Lumix just smashed it out of the park with the S series primes!
I've got the 24-70 f2.8 Art and it's probably one of the finest lenses I've ever owned. Is it big? Yes, and this is coming from someone who was MFT forever. However, what comes out of it is absolutely stone cold stunning. I was able to snag it open box for $900. So the first three I got to do real estate and people work coming from MFT to S5II was the 24-70 f2.8 Art, the 85 f1.8 you mentioned, and the Sigma 16-28 f2.8 C for the wide angle work. It's also fantastic for shooting people in cramped spaces and is compact and light. The prime is nice but I think the 16-28 is much more versatile.
I have the S5 ii x preordered. Coming from the gh5 so need to start over with lenses. 85 1.8 is my first lens for actor headshots. For self tape auditions I’m debating between the 50mm, which is a perfect focal length for that work, or the 35 and using it in apsc mode for those. Def want the 18 when I can find it for a good price too.
I was deciding between the 50mm and 35mm last year. Chose the 35mm because of the 2 for 1 focal length APS-C mode and haven’t regretted it. The nifty 25mm was always on my GH5 so I thought hard about it. Like you, my first prime for L mount was the 85mm. Still haven’t picked up a 50mm prime.
Appreciate this video and your previous one, also trying to get the most minimal setup for more casual shooting travel/lifestyle which has been tempting me to the S5 II for the IBIS especially since then I hopefully won't need additional rigging/stabilisation. Lens choice is always a good subject, trying to keep a small/discreet footprint that's flexible and spending less time swapping lenses. The S primes seem great with the same filter size and 1.8 being light/compact. Currently on Sony and I use the 35 1.8 and 85 1.8 a lot for this reason, it's a pretty good 2 lens setup for having decent variation between them but not missing too much range either. That 28-70 F2.8 is looking tempting though for a single lens setup that's not too huge like the 24-70 👍
Thanks for the effort and the beautiful recommendations 🙏🏽 but I bought lumix s511 with 50 mm f1:8 but I’m looking for wide angle lense for vlogging and hiking Videos which lense is best my for my work thanks again bro

Nice video, Yea everybody talks about that sigma 28-70 , I may have to pick that up eventually for my s5iix. I recently got the sigma 20mm dg dn art and the 50mm version and really loving that 1.4 and the sharpness, for video stuff you can put a black mist filter on them to soften it up a little bit. Loving having opengate and pro res 422HQ but oh my would I just love if this camera could get 4k 60fps no crop or opengate or prores. How sweet that would be. anyways nice video cheers
As a real estate photographer, my go-to lens is the Sigma 14-24 f2.8 Art as its perfect for that application. Seriously considering the Lumix 18mm f1.8 as my RE video lens, as the Sigma is much heavier and the ability to switch between the lumix lenses without re-balancing the gimbal would be awesome! I do use my Lumix 50 and 85mm quite often too!
Couldn't bring myself to pull lthe trigger on that lens for real estate with no native filter capability. Went with the Sigma 16-28 f2.8 Con instead so I could run filters and love it.
Nice one mate! I mostly utilise a few lenses I still have from my MFT days before "upgrading" to the S5; the obvious Sigma 18-35 F1.8 and a Samyang 85mm T1.5. Due to the first one being an APS lens, I don't really have anything wider than 27mm apart from the 20-60 kit lens, which is a bit slow in my opinion. Yet. Recently I got the Sigma 105mm F2.8 Macro L-mount lens though, and that thing is absolutely amazing! I couldn't believe how sharp it was, and macro is really quite useful. Plus it's just stunning for portraits. And small. Cheers!
I started with the 20-60 mm and 50 mm but I wanted more flexibility in bad lighting so I replaced them with the 24 mm. After that I got the 28-70 mm and now I'm not using any of the other lenses, I really don't need them. I miss my 24 mm sometimes but 28 mm is not so much more different.
Yeah that’s what happened with me for a while, and the 28-70 stands to be that lens that suits 80% of all shooting scenarios ! The 18mm is great for those super wide shots though, and sometimes it’s nice to have a little more subject separation on the tele side, so the 85mm is a great addition too!
My current budget only covers one lens, so I have the lumix 35mm in mind, and when I need the 50mm, I think I will take it in apsc mode and use it. Will this tactic last me for a while? For daytime shooting.
Here I am still rocking the Panasonic 24-70MM 2.8 S Pro and 50MM 1.4 S Pro lenses with my S1H. I am looking to get a 35, not sure if it is going to be the Panny or Sigma. I tend to stick with Panasonic lenses because they are generally focus breathing corrected.
Why did you pick the 18mm over the sigma 16-28mm? I'm curious because I'm thinking about getting that one. My 2 current lenses are the 20-60mm and the 85mm, they're both great.
I actually haven’t tried the 16-28mm believe it or not! But I absolutely loved the 18mm the first time I got to try it, and I knew I had to have it. It’s great in lowlight and is super sharp :)
When you use the APS-C mode, does the 1.5 crop contribute to compression? In other words, if I am shooting with an 85mm and the 1.5 crop makes it a 127.5mm, will I get the same compression as a 127.5mm lens?
Have you considered replacing the 18mm 1.8 with the Sigma 16-28 2.8? I'm torn between which one to purchase. I too own the Lumix 50 and 85mm and love the primes but like the versatility and compactness of the Sigma 16-28 & 28-70.
Josh, just wondering a couple of things - How is the 28-70 for autofocus in video? And if going by second hand prices, do you still think the S5II is a great general purpose camera, or is it poor now the X is available? Thanks
Thanks for the review, Josh. I am actually going through a "lens crisis" right about now. I would love to stick with native L Mount glass, but since I MIGHT add a BlackMagic Picket 6K, I might get something in Canon EF mount so I can use it on BOTH systems. Does the 28-70 have the adjustable focus throw feature (found on Panasonic lenses) where you can adjust the amount the focus ring turns to go from minimum focus distance to infinity when using manual focus?
The 28-70 can do that, but you have to make sure the firmware in the camera is updated. Oddly enough, I bought the lens last week and with the proper firmware, I can only have the rotation speed be 360. I'm the only one I can find with that issue though.
Hey Josh, love the vid, these are the exact three lenses that I've been considering for my new S5II that's coming in next week. But I found a great deal on the Kit lens + 50mm, so I'll be using that starting out. Quick question-Have you been able to test image quality between APS-C mode vs cropping in post? If it's working for you, I imagine crop mode must look plenty good enough!
IQ will look better if you go to APS-C crop in camera instead of cropping into the image in the edit…. Especially if you’re shooting 4K. It may be okay if you’re shooting in 6K FF and then cropping, but I wouldn’t crop too heavy on the 4K personally :)
You had earlier recommended the Lumix 24-105 zoom and I purchased it for it's all-around capability. But taking it on a recent trip I realized it's a pretty bulky lens. Though the full weather resistance was useful on a couple rainy days. I originally thought of the Sigma 28-70 and 16-28 DN lenses for their small and light weight and f 2.8 aperture. But the weather resistance and reverse zoom control (as opposed to native Lumix lenses) was a deal breaker for me. I'm beginning to rethink my purchase based on what you just posted. Thoughts?
I think that the 24-105 still stands to be an extremely versatile lens. The OIS alone makes it worthwhile for handheld shooting I think :) But yeah, I love the 28-70 and I’d defo recommend that lens. You do get used to the reverse zoom ring etc!
@@JoshCameron Thanks! BTW... I also own the 18mm and 85mm 1.8 Lumix primes. I love their size, speed and sharpness. They make the 24-105 seem ginormous! 😁
The Sigma 16mm F1.4 is an APS-C lens, so as long as you’re willing to miss out on full frame when using that one, I’d recommend the 18mm f1.8 still. So the 16mm focal length will actually be more like a 24mm :)
I’ve got both too, Damien. They seem to match fine for me at different focal lengths but I’m going to use them for an interview with the same glass for the first time later this month. Any experience with the two to share?
Image quality wise they’re very similar. I haven’t noticed too much of a difference between the two. I would say that the S5ii appears a touch sharper , but very minimal, whereas the S1 looks a tiny bit more organic :)
hi josh, i wrote you on instagram but got no reply. I'm buying a used s5 and I need to buy my first lens. I'm seriously torn between 28-70 and 24-105. you've used both and it's been a while now, what do you recommend? I don't use gimbal, is the 28-70 with ibis usable in the movements of the shot from a standstill without gimbal? compared to the 24-105 is the sharpness and image quality much higher? later I would like to support the 18 f1.8 I hope you can help me, thank you very much
Hey Domenico! Sorry about that, it's probably hit my requests folder and I haven't checked there for a few days so will write back to you! I would say if you're going handheld and want a versatile lens that can do 99% of what you need, then the 24-105 will be a great option. The 28-70 is better in lowlight, but the 24-105 is defo better handheld!
This is great advice as I own the 24-105 (my first lens purchased with the original S5) and had been considering trading for the 28-70, but it’s true: the double IBIS action is fantastic if you do a lot of handheld. It’s a great lens if you have some faster glass to fall back on. But still…that f/2.8 …still thinking about it. Especially now as a new gimbal owner.
I was in the same boat - tough decision btw the two good options. Ended up with 24-105, something about its rendering and character, the 28-70 seems very clinical and flat.
@@domenicoaragona4178 to my eyes the lumix 24-105 is a tad sharper and better microcontrast. Sigma is soft in the corners, center sharpness is on par with 20-60 kit (which is surprisingly for a f2.8 zoom). Check out ephotozine for the mft charts. However, if size and convenience is your priority, this is still a good option.
It depends on the use case. If it’s for “professional” work the LUMIX, if it is for personal use the Sony for sure, though once I’ve hay the S5II’s IBIS I don’t think I could ever do without it.

My current budget only covers one lens, so I have the lumix 35mm in mind, and when I need the 50mm, I think I will take it in apsc mode and use it. Will this tactic last me for a while? For daytime shooting.
Mine are 35, 85 and the kit 20-60. Generally, Primes for portraits, and kit for video.
Sounds awesome! Great lenses :)
If I move to the L-mount; these might be the exact 3 lenses I pick; although Sigma just put out a 17mm F4 mini...
I’d still personally go for the 18mm F1.8 still as the max aperture will be a lot more versatile for you :)
Money bags. S Pro expensive 😔
@@StanleyKC Admittedly, they are but they paid for themselves through client shoots and projects.
Incredible lenses, and believe it or not stand to be the only two lenses I still haven’t tried !!
I have the 18mm F1.8 and it's really good!
I love it!
@@JoshCameron it would be great to see a review of the 16-28mm if you ever got it. Its certainly a lens I'd buy
Great video Josh! Great to see the use case for each lens & how you put them to practice
Thank you!
Great video🙌
It’s crazy how compact everything is these days.
The more compact the better!
Still haven’t tested the Sigma 16-28 F2.8 but would love to try it out. I’m sure it would make for the perfect partner to the 28-70 !
Thank you! Great informative video about lenses for my new Lumix s5IIx. What about the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 24-70mm f/2.8 lens?
I have a review on this lens coming out very soon!
Josh, just wondering a couple of things - How is the 28-70 for autofocus in video?
And if going by second hand prices, do you still think the S5II is a great general purpose camera, or is it poor now the X is available?
Thanks
If I were to add one more lens in addition to my kit 20-60 mm lens for traveling, what would you recommend
Nice overview! Looks like a great kit 👍
Where did you find those lens cap stickers?
Great kit! 👍
@@coreymullins nah your not the only one. It been a problem
Great video as always
Thanks dude!
@@JoshCameron Love it, thanks!
The OIS alone makes it worthwhile for handheld shooting I think :)
But yeah, I love the 28-70 and I’d defo recommend that lens. You do get used to the reverse zoom ring etc!
@@JoshCameron Thanks! BTW... I also own the 18mm and 85mm 1.8 Lumix primes. I love their size, speed and sharpness. They make the 24-105 seem ginormous! 😁
I put off buying either the 18mm and 24mm, not knowing which one would be more useful. I might have to bite the bullet soon.
The 18 is awesome!
A74 with Samyang VAF lenses or S5 ii with S primes. Which one is better?
Any thoughts on the Sigma 16mm as a lower cost alternative to the native 18mm? I think it’s about half the price and an f/1.4.
The Sigma 16mm F1.4 is an APS-C lens, so as long as you’re willing to miss out on full frame when using that one, I’d recommend the 18mm f1.8 still.
So the 16mm focal length will actually be more like a 24mm :)
@@JoshCameron noted. missed that and it defeats the purpose.
16-28 + 28-70 + 90 (24-105 lives in the van as a back up/wet weather option)
Hey are you noticing a image difference between your S1 and S5ii? Which image you prefer between the 2?
I’ve got both too, Damien. They seem to match fine for me at different focal lengths but I’m going to use them for an interview with the same glass for the first time later this month. Any experience with the two to share?
@@stoneylama I only the S1 so I was just wondering.
Image quality wise they’re very similar. I haven’t noticed too much of a difference between the two. I would say that the S5ii appears a touch sharper , but very minimal, whereas the S1 looks a tiny bit more organic :)
lumix 24-105, lumix 50. If I need f/2.8 I’ll switch out to the Sigma Art 24-70
Love your Video 🎥 Bro
Thanks dude!
what about this nice green camera bag?
hi josh, i wrote you on instagram but got no reply.
@@alanwang8866 Thanks for the info. 😊having tried both, is there much difference in the sharpness and detail of the images?
@@domenicoaragona4178 to my eyes the lumix 24-105 is a tad sharper and better microcontrast. Sigma is soft in the corners, center sharpness is on par with 20-60 kit (which is surprisingly for a f2.8 zoom). Check out ephotozine for the mft charts. However, if size and convenience is your priority, this is still a good option.
Nifty 50 all day
Thats LUMIX very own cheap 1.8 lense in my case
Great lens! :)
Josh sell me the 20-60mm kit lens
Rip 50mm 1.8 😢
Hi bro could you please make a battle between lumix s2 and sony zv e1 since they cost the same price
There's no battle to be had - the ZV E1 is inferior in every way for a professional workflow :)
It depends on the use case. If it’s for “professional” work the LUMIX, if it is for personal use the Sony for sure, though once I’ve hay the S5II’s IBIS I don’t think I could ever do without it.
I have the 85 and 50. The 85 is just magic 🪄. I want to keep it and get a 28-70
I think you’d get a lot of use out of the 28-70!
