      Let's hope they do at some point. Samyang had a go and released a grand total of *drum roll* 1 lens....
      And they don't have anything else in their roadmap to suggest more L-Mount lenses this year, so if Viltrox join the party, I sincerely hope they don't have one drink and leave like Samyang did, and instead actually decide to boogie for a bit

    leica 24-70 f2.8 is just rehoused sigma 24-70 f2.8, even the zoom rotation direction is kept the same, which is the opposite direct than other leica lenses, they are not even hiding the fact that they are charging a premium only on branding.
    the leica 24-90 f2.8-4 though is a much more unique and compelling option

    A use case for APS-C lenses would be for 60fps (crops in to APS-C) and you want the lightest setup possible for a gimbal.

      yeah for me the S5II is a great apsc camera : 4k50, less rolling shutter, great image quality...

      I think that is a valid use case. I have adpated a Canon EF-S 10-18 IS STM which is unfortunately a rather slow lens as it is only f/4.5-5.6, and unfortunately, there are no built-in lens profile corrections (which results in un-corrected distortion and vignetting when shooting video). The only thing(s) stopping me from getting the Sigma is the price (over $600 after sales tax here in California), and the lack of LENS stabilization. By contrast, the Canon EF-S 10-18 IS STM has LENS stabilization and can be had for under $150 (I have a couple of other Canon EF lenses so easy for me to justify the cost of the Sigma MC-21 adapter).

      @@marin_real_estate_photography I did the same thing as you with the Canon EF-S 10-18 IS. Way cheaper but can get heavy with the Sigma adapter on the S5iiX. I am thinking of getting an S9 for gimbal work though.

    I saw a video testing the 16-35 alongside the 14-28 and the image quality of the 14-28 is equal to and sometimes better than the more expensive variant.

    In regard to Sigma L Mount APS-C lenses: Leica made some L-Mount APS-C cameras like the TL, TL2 or CL. For owners of these cameras these lenses are quite nice.

      @JoshCameron  12 годин тому +1

      Yeah, and that's why I put the note in the video :) It's a shame they're all discontinued now. Personally I think brands like Sigma should be more focussed on the products that are still in production though, and therefore full frame only :) Finding a TL/CL from Leica used is not only quite expensive for the tech you get, but also rare depending on where you live

    I've been having this dilemma whether I should get Sigma APSC lenses on my S5. I do agree that if you're using a full frame camera you should use the entirety of the sensor as much as you can. But I do think the 10-18mm f2.8 should be the only exception simply because that's the only ultrawide option when you go intend to capture 4K60P with crop limitation. There is no way everyone would want to fork up so much to get super ultrawide 10mm to only have it cropped to 15mm.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  12 годин тому

      I totally get that, and if 4K 60 is something you use all the time then the APS-C crop will be there anyway. I rarely use 4K 60 nowadays, so for me I'm always trying to use Open Gate or as much of the sensor as I can get :)

    You are right about the APO Summicron SL lenses, I had the 35mm and I loved it, but my 35mm GM was almost as sharp and with better bokeh. Now I have the 28-45mm from Sigma I will not even think about buying it again, the 28-45mm is so good, contrast and colors don't look like Sigma previous lenses. I even sold my 24mm GM because of this lens.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  12 годин тому +1

      It's really crazy to be honest. I have so much respect for Leica as a brand, but I just feel like they're coasting off the 'red dot' instead of actually innovating nowadays.
      You said it, I know there's GM lenses that rival the APO Summicrons in terms of image quality, and for a fraction of the price!
      I really enjoyed testing the 28-45 from sigma, my only complaint was the size and the limiting focal range. 28 to 45 really isn't that vast, but then again at F1.8 throughout then negates any prime below 50mm :)

    I "hope" that Panasonic release a high resolusion version of the S9(like A7CR) that would make coupling it with the Sigma's APS-Cs make sense. Imagine 61 mp sensor from SL3 in the size of the S9 couple with small and fast lenses even at super 35 mode you still have 27 mp.

      We are lacking a decent fast wide angle zoom to be honest. The 16-28 scratches the itch for the most part, but why stop at 28mm? I would've LOVED it if it went to 35mm.... I guess they see that as a crossover point for the 28-70 F2.8 though

  • @4WHEELBIKER

    I’m just glad Leica has alliances with Panasonic and Sigma as well as adaptors for other lens makers to ease the entrance into their L-mount system which, while expensive, is worth it on the used market if you value build quality and luxurious images. And of course your wallet can stand the hit !

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  12 годин тому

      The L-Mount doesn't have to be an expensive system though, you can get some incredible items for not much money at all. The S5II/S5IIX are very affordable for the amount of features/codecs you get, and the 1.8 primes can be had for sub £500 each used now, so there's definitely ways to save!
      Granted, the L-Mount started off all high end and that's ultimately what people will aspire to (once we get some good updates to the flagships)... I do think the L-Mount is one of the more affordable systems to get into after looking at Canon RF and Nikon Z prices

    Another excellent video!
    Sometimes it's just nice to own something special. On my retirement I purchased a 30 year old Aston Martin DB7; totally impracticable, and a money pit. Fortunately neither of those complaints can be levelled against my well used Leica SL. However I equally enjoy using both the car & camera! Not because James Bond drove one & the other has a Red Dot!
    The Leica is good and I only wish I could afford to upgrade to the new SL3, & APO lenses (well I could always sell the Aston), but as you say, 'what's the point'?
    My back up camera & the one I use the most, is a Lumix S1, together with a set of Lumix f/1.8 primes. Its picture quality is excellent, as is its build quality. The image stabilisation & flippy screen help holding things together, especially when taking low down shots & coping with ageing knee joints!

    • @coasttocoastphoto
      @coasttocoastphoto 21 годину тому

      I don’t have a DB7, but I do have 18 Leica products, not to mention another dozen UA-cam drool cameras. If you want to make some nice images, go for Voigtlander or maybe an Otus. The SL is a powerhouse and still is, although I switched to an SL2-S about 3 years ago. Would I buy an SL3? I’d go for a used S or wait for the price of the 3 to come down. Hopefully the Aston will skyrocket.

    • @johngreenwood9247
      @johngreenwood9247 14 годин тому

      Yes... I also have a long history of Leica ownership, and just love the feeling of using & handling the cameras. My personal favourite, is my first Leica IIIf + 50mm Summitar lens, which I still own. I know it's sacrilege in Leica circles, but I never really got on with my Leica M2 + 35mm Summicron lens, I much preferred the original SL2, & later R derivatives, particularly the R6. The R lenses are still relatively good value second hand, and with a suitable adapter work well with the latest Leica mirror less cameras.
      I'm also very familiar with classic German glass you've identified, having used/owned many Voigtlander & Zeiss examples. I still own my late father's 1950's Zeiss (bull's eye) Contarex & Ultra/Planar lenses!
      I seem to have collected quite a lot of photographic equipment over the years and as long as I keep it all well dusted (& dehumidified) my wife says she won't make me down size it ...yet!

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  12 годин тому

      Despite my negative comments about the SL2-S, I'd still love to own one, and an Aston Martin DB7 actually! The issue is that I get to play with so many cameras all the time, and so hoarding expensive Leica's without having any real use case for them would feel silly to me, so that's ultimately why I sold the SL2-S. The SL3 was a beautiful camera to use, really quick, nice in the hand, lovely images etc.... But I must say that Leica is losing their soul a bit. The M series cameras and everything they've done in the past to build this 'legacy' they now have is why they're so good, and I feel like the SL series is becoming a generic side quest just so they have something to offer alongside the competition.
      That's just my take, I know it's probably not a popular way to look at it, but I've handled older Leica's and they've given me way more joy than the newer ones :)

    • @johngreenwood9247
      @johngreenwood9247 11 годин тому

      @JoshCameron Hi I agree with your comments regarding the generic nature of the more recent Leica cameras. As a petrol head I feel the same about the forthcoming "electric" revolution, as I do about the loss of "soul" of many of the excellent cameras produced in the post film, digital/mirrorless age.
      However, having said that I'd still prefer the convenience and images produced by my walk-about Leica Q, even if the actual user enjoyment might be less(?), than my old Leica IIIf I've owned since the 1960's.
      If I were restricted to just one camera, the Leica Q would be it!
