  • Tonight we had NorthernEar regulars Metallica on the channel and we listened to their song Wherever I May Roam! Honestly, this is one of my favourite Metallica songs. I thought everything about it was fantastic!
I think this is the first song ive heard off the Black Album, so let me know more about the album. Is it up there as one of their best?

This is literally the song that made metal mainstream back in 1991, and that isn't overstatement. The main hit from the album was enter sandman with roam and nothing else matters being the reinforcement to make people realise that this breakout album was serious business from a serious band and not a one hit wonder. It got thrashed on pop radio so hard that literally no one missed it and it became a party standard... even the pop / EDM guys wore it out. Nirvana had made dirty grunge rock mainstream months before then Metallica came along and blew it out of the park with technically perfect driving grooves and made people really pay attention to metal. Metal went mainstream and it became acceptable to mosh. Cool kids wore Metallica shirts. It was a magical time.

I loved it! This intro is so powerful, it gives us an impression that we are far from home, maybe in a desert or something like that and is really a metaphor for how the most important is to be well with yourself regardless of the place you are.

Black album gets a lot of hate by narrow-headed fans. Metallica wanted a change, a shift, instead of staying stuck at the same place. Great heavy album!

  • @wfly81

This album was when Metallica decided to become more commercial, which made a lot of fans mad (metal fans are fickle). But it's also when they embraced the weighty feel of slower grooves, and higher production value. "Sad But True" probably embodies that more than any other song. It's really slow and heavy and groovy, and has the feel of dragging along a massive piece of machinery by brute muscle force. Unfortunately, this album also marks the end of the speed and thrash that made Metallica, which is why it made a lot of fans upset.

Unfortunately you are right, but you also have to understand that they did not know the path that Cliff took them until the tragedy happened, remember that when Cliff was in the band, he wanted and had the vision to take them to a more experimental Thrash. On a musical level, which was the combination of classical music with Thrash, a clear example was "Orion", remember that Cliff in his childhood years always instilled the bass with instrumentation, composition and classical music. It would have been great if he was still alive, so that he could show both the public and the members, the trajectory he had planned for the future, he always refused to market, that is why his three classic albums were never uploaded with a video clip, until passed away. It came when Hetfield, Ulrich and Hammett decided an all or nothing to generate more public with their video clips, something more commercial but without breaking the scheme and essence of metal (which changed from thrash to Hard Rock and from Heavy to Ne Metal), nor tragic changes so amazing from what they were before. I'm still very thoughtful about: How would cliff have been, would he have changed the cards on the table? (I mean his musical career and what his vision was for him in the future)

I also really like the album that this track is from (what fans have dubbed: the "Black Album")! I like Metallica's early stuff too (my favorite album is Ride the Lightning), but there's no denying that this album is great. Sure, it is not quite as thrashy as the earlier albums, but so what? It still sounds like Metallica and it sounds great! I also love the album that came after this one, Load. The band departed even further from their thrash sound, but it's fine. Hell, if I'd been playing the same songs for nearly 20 years, I'd want to change it up too!

I love all of Metallicas Albums. Truly do. But the Black Album has to be either my favorite or second favorite after Load/ReLoad (gonna classify that as one album despite it being two). The songs are just amazing, groovy, and heavy. Holier than Thou is probably my favorite off this album, along with Don't Tread on Me.

It doesn't just sound like it, it is a sitar at the beginning. They used a variety of instruments on that album for some color. That striking sound on the one of the main riff and in the verse is a 12-string bass.

Good ear to pick out the harmonic minor! This song is pretty much the only Metallica song that's in the Phrygian (dominant) mode, the middle of which is the same as a harmonic minor scale. It's always been one of my top 5 Metallica songs purely because even though it's still very 'Metallica' it's also one of their more creative songs musically.

Def a more mainstream sound with this album. This is where Metallica took the turn to being both loved and hated. Personally, I love this album. This song is prob my 2nd favorite off this album next to Unforgiven. Another song you need to check out is Sad But True. It’s a really heavy riff. I believe you’ve listened to Of Wolf And Man, but I could be mistaken. Of course the big mainstream hits were Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters. I think a huge underrated song off this album is My Friend of Misery. Either way, I’m super happy to see you liked this song. Great analysis of the details! Thumbs up brother!

It's because the 'hidden gem' of a band that many people knew from things like tape swapping had suddenly become 'mainstream'. It's a really bizarre bit of self-consciousness that people get pissy when other people start liking the same stuff as them. The album itself is different than what came before for sure, but a master-class in its own right imo.
