How do we like our 2021 Tesla Model X?

- We traded in our 2017 Tesla Model X 100D for a new "Raven" Tesla Model X. All the small changes to the Model X over the past 3 years make the new X a much better EV.

No hype; just the facts, man! Wunderbar!
Thanks for tuning in and the positive feedback.
I enjoyed your review. I have seen countless videos on the MODEL x but this one managed to bring up a number of things never mentioned in the others. And that scenery melted my heart. So beautiful. Life is good!
@@guidedmeditation2396 Thank you so much.
I like the laid back review style. Thank you, and congratulations on a beautiful new car :)
Much appreciated!
This is my dream car. Hopefully I’ll buy one in the future
Same I have wanted one forever
Nah it’s no hopefully u put that hard work in and u do what u gotta do and you gonna have one
You should not dream about cars. Or things, in general. When you get it, it will not make you happy for long time. The work you put in to get this kind of car isn't worth it. A car like this is nice to have, but don't make it your goal. A car like this is intended for the people that make lots of money and can afford to put down $100k and loose 20% of the value immediately. It helps to ease the pain of time lost at work but it does not make it go away. Think of cars as a tool that takes you from A to B, and don't think more of it than that.
Walk it out. Out in the nature, like this guy. He has some sense of what really matters.
There, a little bit of random Tuesday's life wisdom.
Excellent video. Keep them coming!
Thanks for the encouragement.
Nice video. I really like the wood trim, its kinda relaxing.
Me too.
After watching 3 of your videos just subscribed!
Noticing your hiking, just wanted to tell you please consider making videos about other things too, like hiking (which seems it’s sth you’re into). I really like the way you talk and make videos.
I appreciate the feedback and thanks for the sub.
Nice video. I´m taking delivery of my model X 2021 in december in Reykjavik Iceland. Plenty of snow and rain here to test these falcon wing doors .... Can't wait :)
Congrats. We sure like ours. Hope this one is as reliable as our 2017 X.
Thanks for the great info on your experience so far with 2021 Tesla Model X and allowing us to see the beautiful scenery.
Thanks for tuning in.
Nice video, just the facts. I enjoyed the laid back style, no stressful yelling. Greetings from Norway :)
Glad you enjoyed it and greetings to you as well.
I have a 2020 MX, I just want to wish you and your wife a very Merry Christmas. I am a subscriber and your videos always make my day. You, sir, are the best UA-camr out there and make the best videos. Thank you, sir. I am a big fan....
Thanks for such kind words. Have a very Merry Christmas.
Just basic and got straight to the points. Amazing content!!!
I ordered my Model X in April. My delivery was scheduled for June, then August, then November, and now January 2022. No refund I was informed.
That is a bummer. I wonder why the refresh is taking so long. My hope is that they have made some additional improvements that have not been announced; maybe a bigger battery or faster charging. One can only hope that the long wait will be rewarded in some fashion. I wonder if Tesla would allow you to transfer the deposit to the purchase of a different Tesla if you are in the need of a car right away. It might be worth asking.
@@modelxevfun2858 I will inquire. What is even more confusing is the Website says January as a delivery date. My Q is how can everyone have the same delivery date?
Thank you Sir for your update. Very detailed.
Thanks for tuning in.
Amazing video mate. Appreciate it. Would really appreciate if you could do an autopilot video with the difference between both models.
Great video and love your floor mats would love to know were you purchased them.
Thanks in advance
I purchased aftermarket winter mats for my 2017 5 seat X and then moved them over to our 2021 X . The ones in my X are LLoyd Northridge mats. I've been very happy with them. They are not "bathtub" type mats but they work well for the snow and mud where I live. Here is my review from several years ago. ua-cam.com/video/Wo_D9cHZQko/v-deo.html They are holding up well after over 53,000 miles.
Grandpa UA-cam. I love it.
:)
We should be getting our brand new Model X Long range in December. Can’t wait! Thanks for the videos! Like your yellow jacket too, what brand is it?
Its a North Face down jacket from a couple years ago. I picked it up for a very good price at the time. I suspect it was marked down as the model/color was on its way out.
Congrats on the new one, kudos on a video well done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Amazing video! I really enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Your video was great, not just for the car information, but for the beautiful surroundings. Was nice to see someone with an engineer mind review the car, not just the standard speed comments. The only negative I see with the Model X is I wont take delivery till September 2022. Also I tried to use your referral code but it only came up for Solar Roof or Solar Panels.
Appreciate the kind words. Tesla removed vehicles from their referral program in mid September 2021. There is such a backlog of orders, the incentive was deemed unnecessary. Thanks for tuning in and I hope you are having a great fall.
@@modelxevfun2858 Thank you, yes will be a long time till i get it, but no worry on my end.
@@modelxevfun2858 Oh and hope you get a chance to drive the new one with the Yoke. It has me worried, I wont like driving the car.
@@wesrobinson7366 I'm sure it would take me some time to adjust to the yoke, but I'd be willing to give it a try. It will be interesting to see if the Cybertruck keeps the yoke when it is released next year.
Great video! I too love my Model Y!
Thank you so much for this video. I am saving up to buy one.
Thanks for tuning in and I'm sure the wait will be worth it.
Great video, I like the editing, great job 👍
Appreciate the feedback. Thanks for tuning in.
great review. quality of video and audio is great!
Much appreciated!
Thanks, great video. Mine should arrive soon and has same interior as yours. You reinforced my reasons to buy now. I'll subscribe.
Thanks. I hope you enjoy your X as much as we enjoy ours.
Excellent video. The head rests are not adjustable? Really? I find most head rests are pitched too far forward, as though I should be hunched over instead of sitting up straight. So, I remove those head rests and install them backwards, and then all's fine. Can you give more info on this issue?
Tesla revised the seat design at the beginning of 2020. Tesla called the change "a new modern design with less bulk and more comfort" The new design does not have an adjustable headrest. In my previous 2017 X, the headrest could be moved up and down. It was powered by an electric motor and the position set to the driver profile so it would automatically change for each different driver. I think it was a measure to cut costs. That being said, I find the seats are very comfortable for me (5 foot 8 inches tall) and I have no problem with the headrest in its fixed position.
Very nice configuration, especially with the bench seat that allows to tilt the backrest and does not block the rear visibility unlike the individual seat option
The ability to fold the backrest of the bench also increases the load capacity to the front seats.
I have a question, is the bench seat sliding back and forth, or is it fixed?
Congratulations on this review and new purchase.
In the 5 seat version, the bench is fixed. In the 7 seat version, the bench moves forward to allow access to the 3rd row.
@@modelxevfun2858 thank you for the answer.
Great review video. 👍🏻👍🏻 How does the Model X handle the WY winter? Cheers!
I'm just starting my 4th winter with a model X in Northwest Wyoming. I have several youtube videos on this subject that you might want to check out. In a nutshell, the Model X, with snow tires, is the best winter car I have ever owned, for trips less than 200 miles. That takes care of 95% of my winter driving needs. That is in comparison to other cars we have owned (AWD Audis, Subarus, and Volvos). We also own a Subaru for winter trips to areas of Wyoming that still lack Supercharging infrastructure. Tesla built a new supercharger in Casper, but the gap between the Jackson Supercharger and Casper Supercharger is 290 miles. That distance is too far in the winter. With snow packed roads, a bit of wind and a mountain pass in between, I wouldn't chance it. Our new X has more range than our 2017 100D, but I still don't think it would make that leg. Our previous X wouldn't even come close. I'm hoping that our new X's winter range is at least 20 miles more than our previous X. There is a ski area that is 221 miles round trip from our home that we could not do with our previous X. It will make a good test this winter for the new X. I hope my winter range problem will be solved over time as Tesla rolls out a new generation of vehicles with the 2468 batteries. I currently have a reservation for the 500+ mile range cybertruck.
@@modelxevfun2858 Your channel and replies like this are so helpful. We have a M3 and a Subaru in Colorado but we would like to go all electric. We don’t have a bug enough garage like you for parking a MX, but given our proximity to SCs, you’re making me think we can do it. Thank you so much for all your insight!
@@mauradudley You are welcome. The next few years are going to be very interesting, and it has been fun to be part of this new adventure.
what is the location where you shot the video ? the location looks amazing too..!
Most of the video was shot in Grand Teton National Park of Wyoming
We have a 2017 x 100d and when it was new it was 375 miles full charge and it was one of the first 100d in the country with preorder now with 50k miles on it the full range is 340-350 miles which still isn’t bad compared to what we lost on our old model s with same amount of miles. We are very surprised our car could go that many miles everyone with same car says they can only get near 300 or less.
Our 2017 100D was rated at 295 miles (USA rating) when new and had minimal range loss (286 miles) after 53,000 miles. I hope our new model X fairs just as well over the next 3 years.
Mark, how was your charging habits? To what % did you usually charge it to and what is the frequency of you having to go under %30? Did you use it for mostly short range/city and did not have to use superchargers much?
@@N0xiety It is my dad’s car he charges it about 75% every time when he goes to work the commute is 40 miles 30-40 minutes one way and he also charges the car at work. He doesn’t drive the car every day about twice a week and drives the other car 3 times a week. Also one important thing is we only charge it once or twice a week. Once a month we go to Chicago which is about 160 miles so we charge it 100% so we can drive fast on highway and use all the aircon then supercharge it in Chicago and drive around there and then we come back with still 10-30% charge and play it safe. So we charge it 100% for trips and 75% for daily use and for daily use try not to charge more than 75% twice a week. We learned a lot back when we had the model s it had a lot more degradation from misuse. Also if you live a cold climate charge it a bit extra if use a lot of heating but still stay conservative and don’t charge it too much because the degradation on the battery is important if you want to keep the car for a long time. We charge it not much in 3 years and have lost 20 miles. Our car has only been below 10% percent twice because of using heating and driving fast coming back from Chicago. Also the service center is in Chicago and they give us a loaner to go back home and they charge to 100% when we get the car back.
@@markpereira4276 I see, thanks for the info.
@@N0xiety You're certainly welcome.
What kind of camera are you using? Your footage is awesome!
I used two different cameras to make this video. Most of the video, including all the hiking shots in Teton National Park were shot with a Go Pro Hero 9. The inside car shots were taken on a cell phone, the Samsung S20 Ultra. Thanks for tuning in and I hope you have a great holiday season.
Man keep it up I really like your videos and your Tesla 😂I’m working on getting me one

I just ordered mine 2021 model X on Saturday, and am very excited.
Clicked on the link for the referral code and did seam to find it?
Congrats on the X. You are in for a lot of fun.
great video , with many great details . how is cabin noise ?
Cabin noise is fine. It is better than our 2017 X. The X has lots of glass in the cabin and I think that contributes to road noise entering and bouncing around inside. Tesla has just started using insulated glass for the side windows in the Model Y and 3, and I hope that Tesla will do the same for the Model S and X in the future. I don't have any means to measure the noise, but for my ears, it is acceptable.
Thank u so much for answering
great review. Thank you. Can you talk a little bit more about MCU 2 in a future video?
Check out this youtube comparision ua-cam.com/video/xjzJ0t_YIik/v-deo.html
Thank you for the video.
Please post a road trip. I hope to see a range test. For example 75 to 85 mph. The long range model 3 dual motor I could only get 246 with arrival at 3 to 5 percent. Charged to 296 miles. 100 degree weather from Nebraska to California. I really wonder if the new model x can go 320 miles on the same scenario.
Winter has just set in and I plan to do some winter range tests over the next few months. I will have to wait until spring to do a long distance freeway trip with dry roads and in warmer weather. Stay tuned.
@@modelxevfun2858 looking forward to the winter ❄️ one. I wonder if your ModelX has the heat pump.
I think I can rule out a heat pump. I did a test this morning.
1. Slow charged the car at 9 kw for about an hour to warm up the battery
2. Stopped the charging
3. Turned on the cabin heater then watched the display to see how much current was being fed into the car
4. The garage was around 50 degrees F and I set the cabin heat to 80 degrees F
5. Initial draw was 6 kw (resistive heater, same as my 2017 X)
6. As the cabin warmed up, the draw went down to about 3 kw, same as my old X
Just to confirm, I tried to listen in the frunk area for any AC noise, but all I could hear was the HVAC fan. I'm pretty sure this rules out a heat pump in my new X. I'm sure the X will get a heat pump eventually.
Wow that’s a beautiful car.Looks like you lucked out and are getting the model with additional range, is that right?
Yes, Tesla's latest firmware increases the EPA rated range to 371 miles at 100%
Does the water on the falcon doors after a rain still fall in the car when opening? Or did they implement some way to avoid that from happening?
I haven't observed water entering when opening a wet fwd door after the rain has stopped. Some have reported that water can enter when opening the rear hatch when a fwd is open. I will give this theory a test the next time I wash the car.
Can you do a video on maintenance and also your experience with tires?
That is a great suggestion, I'll see if I can put something together. Stay tuned
Same body style for 12 years.....so many better looking Ev's out there.
There will be many new EV vehicles from other manufacturers to pick from in the coming years. I hope there is a style that hits the mark for you. Thanks for

Did you purchase floor mats for your 2021
model X? I'm researching them now, looks like weather tech is one of the only options for the six seater.
I purchased aftermarket winter mats for my 2017 5 seat X and then moved them over to our 2021 X . The ones in my X are LLoyd Northridge mats. I've been very happy with them. They are not "bathtub" type mats but they work well for the snow and mud where I live. Congrats on getting the 2021 model! You mentioned in your video that when you charge overnight you notice that there is no longer and percentage drops during the day. I also noticed that with my Model X, though mine is the 75D 2017. I noticed the difference when I upgraded from MCU1 to MCU2. Congrats again!
That's great information that I had not heard before. The new MCU is such an improvement over the old one.

@@modelxevfun2858 Thanks. I saw our other video about them. Enjoy your scenic vids. Keep them going. Not all that scenic in TX
Great video and review! Regarding vampire drain overnight, it depends on your energy settings on your old 2017 (MCU1). I used to have bad vampire drain overnight on my 2017, but then I set Energy Savings On and Always Connected Off which allows the car to sleep. I now lose very little if any SOC overnight. 2020 Model X cars do not have these options since they have MCU2 which manages energy usage better.
Regarding FWDs, I recently test drove a 2020 MX and agree the doors seem to open faster.
Great tips. On mine I had the Energy Savings on but I'm pretty sure the Always Connected was set to on as well. Are there times when you cannot access the car via the phone app?
@@modelxevfun2858 I have always been able to access the car (after it is woken up).
I think u might have a different X than 2021 because there is supposed to be a horizontal display and a display in the back seat
My X has a 2021 VIN, one that was built just before Tesla shut down the S and X production line for the new "refresh" X. The new X should be available in late summer or early fall 2021
Quality informative video, a class act!
Much appreciated!
I am planning of getting a model x. I’m just curious, how much is the final price of your model x?
Check Tesla.com for current pricing. The only option we selected was the midnight silver paint, and as of 11/12/2020, the purchase price in the USA is $81,490 US Dollars.
I did check Tesla.com, with sales tax, it’s totaling to almost 87 grand (no added extras).
I'm very excited to be picking up my 2021 Model X next week. I'm transitioning from a 2018 Model S and have heard that the early Model Xs had considerably more road noise than the Model S. Have you noticed improvements in noise over your prior Model X? Thanks for the great video!
Yes, the new X is much quieter than our pre raven 2017 X. I haven't been in a newer S, so I don't know how it compares, but I drove a prefacelift P85 (loaner for a few days) and I'd say the new X is quieter. I have just hit 1000 miles on our new X and so far I'm completely happy that I made the change.
hey how’re you liking your MX? any updates?
Do you have the issue with the rain water dripped into the car when the falcon door open? Any improvements between 2017 and 2021?
It is a big opening, and if it is a heavy rain combined with wind, some rain will blow in. In light rain and calm conditions, the doors do a good job of shielding the opening. One trick in heavy rain is to only partially open one door and have everyone enter from just one side. Kids have no problem getting through a partially opened wing, but large or elderly adults may have some difficulty. I have only had the new X for a week and haven't been able to try it out in the rain. I've noticed some changes to the door frame, but I don't know if there have been any changes to the weather stripping. I'll try and do a test the next time it rains or the next time I wash the car. Maybe others who live in a rainy climate and have kids can chime in with their experience, both good and bad.
Have the USB ports changed in the 2021 update? I know the model 3 changed to USB C sometime ago in the rear seats.
No change on our 9/20 build X. 2 USB A for the second row and 2 USB A for the front seats.
the headrest will raise and lower it is on the side by the control to change position of the seat
My 2017 X headrest was adjustable, but I don't think they are on my 2021 X.
@@modelxevfun2858 oh my mistake sorry i thought they just moved it from up at the actual headrest to down by where the set controls are

Great job on the video

Oh wow I didn't realize they made the car a lot better over the years even though it looks the same.
Tesla is unique from other auto makers in that their policy is for continual improvement of each model on a schedule that is not tied to model year.
Where are you hiking? That place looks beautiful!
The trail is in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming USA and runs from Colter Bay to Hermitage Point.
@@modelxevfun2858 Thanks! Im looking to travel out around there next year. I will have to give it a visit.

Thanks for coming along with us on our journey.
2 questions for you, if you don't mind. 1) How are you finding the Raven suspension compared to the older one, 2) although you bought this only a short time ago, how is the heat from sunshine? I have an S, and had to get a tint done to reduce the heat in the car. I'm just wondering if you've noticed any difference between your old X and the new one. Thanks!
The Raven suspension is an improvement over our previous X. Its not like night and day, mainly because the previous air suspension was pretty good in my opinion. The new suspension has additional settings, which allows the owner to tweak the suspension a bit to their liking, but I have mine set on the recommended setting. I plan to check out the different settings next spring when I remove the snow tires and go back to the stock 20 inch rims. I don't think there has been any changes in the glass from our previous X. The sun is pretty weak this time of year. The solar gain inside the car provides a bit of heat on our cold winter days, but the huge glass area becomes a heat sink at night in subzero temps. If I did a lot of long distance driving at night during the winter, I'd probably put the sun shade up and add a sheet of bubble insulation between the sunshade and glass. We did not have tint added to our previous X, but we did use the overhead sun shade during the summer months. I made one trip in our previous X through Nevada and California in August, where the daytime temperatures were above 100 F (38 C). The air conditioner was able to keep us plenty cool in the front two seats with the sun shade installed. We did however, have a minor issue with charging speeds in Nevada in extreme temperatures (less than expected charging rate) due to the heat. This is a known issue for the older superchargers, and I hope that the new superchargers do not have that issue.
@@modelxevfun2858 Thank you for that info. How do you find the new regen brakes? Are you able to do the proverbial "one-foot" driving like in the 3 and Y or do you find you still need to touch brakes to get to a reasonable stop?
@@trevortremaine8468 I like the regen improvements of the raven drivetrain. It is easy to come to a complete stop without touching the brake. It only took a couple of stops to figure it out, and now it seems normal. There is one major difference that I've noticed however, and that is that it takes a lot longer for our new X to regain full regen once the battery is cold. In our old X, we would get full regen, even under severe cold conditions, after 20 or 30 minutes of driving. Our new X takes much longer. On a recent ski trip, it took more than an hour before we had our full regen back after the car sat in the cold for about 4 hours. It's not a big deal, but it would be great to be able to use the regen coming down off the mountain after skiing. I don't know if this is a software bug or if Tesla has changed their algorithm to better protect a cold battery.
Nice video but the 1st four minutes would have been used for the review and not hiking. Just saying
Where did you get the floor mats?
The floor mats are Lloyd Northridge All Weather mats (not sponsored). I moved them over from our previous X and they have 3 winters and 53,000 miles on them. They still look great and are holding up well. ua-cam.com/video/Wo_D9cHZQko/v-deo.html

Appreciate the feedback. I have several friends driving Prius and I haven't been able to convince them to try a Tesla. They are waiting for Toyota to produce an electric car, but I'm afraid it will be a long wait.

How much did it cost if you traded in?

How is it a 2021 if Tesla doesn’t do model years?
The model year is designated on the vin code. The model year is meaningless other than as a descriptor. For Tesla, the correct term should probably be production year, however my 2021 Vin car was delivered in October 2020.
Congrats on the new X. Where is this video filmed? It’s gorgeous!

Yes and No. When I log into my account on tesla.com, they list my car as a 2021 Model X. You are correct that Tesla does not wait for a "Model Year" to make changes to a car line.
Thats what we bought except white
Fantastic. Our previous X was white, and Julie prefers the white color, but I thought we would try a different color this time around.
Thank you so much for the floor mat information, I plan on ordering this weekend, also thanks for the video you made in regards to the mats.
I have logged onto your ts.la/thomasl4949 so we can share our referral codes, I'm a bit lost and confused, it appears that I should have went through the address to order in order to share our referrals? Anyway would be happy to share if I knew how to do it. Have a great weekend!
The referral link can be used if you order a new Tesla vehicle or solar product. When using the link, both parties receive 1000 supercharger miles. If you already own a Tesla, you can share your own referral link to others who are going to purchase a Tesla. If you are planning on ordering a new Tesla Model X, you may want to wait before ordering floor mats. We don't know at this point if Tesla is making any interior changes, after they restart production.

You don’t like it. It’s not there, non excistant 😝, 2021! Incoming (:
???? Don't like what?
I wish it had suicide doors on the back it rains so much here the back seat would be flooded!
In reality, a sliding door probably would have been a good choice for many. I'm sure there are many reasons why they didn't take that route. The ability to be able to stand up in the car in fair weather to tend to a child seat is probably the falcon wing's biggest asset. Like all things, it is better in some circumstances and worse in others. I didn't mention it in the video, but we have used our X a few times for "car camping" in the woods and the doors are an asset when trying to crawl into and out of the car when camping.
