I mentioned in another comment that I truly love the country but after my personal experiences and seeing how so many foreign ppl have been scammed of land/ money in this way, I decided to buy in JA instead. I will always visit Ghana tho.

@wabz.z This is one of the top reasons Africa will not progress. People in the West don't find trust and integrity on the continent. I also was interested to buy a property in Africa, I changed my mind. I am buying my property in a white country. White people are more trustworthy and have more integrity when doing businesses.

She was just absolutely lovely! You were an excellent host and her story is very educational. I have reservations about buying land in Africa myself. It’s crazy there’s just too many people sharing their testimony being robbed. They Rob even their own people. So if your American your a walking target. Shows how important it is to do your homework but that takes time. All this going back to Africa seems like a weird trap. People leaving Africa to go to Europe or Germany. Meanwhile black Americans leaving to go to Africa especially after that “Year of the return” talk. What’s really going on here? Is it a trap? America as much as I love this country may not top for very long, especially after BRICS currency.

No disrespect to your guest but I remember back in the day, people used to warn her to be careful with some of the locals. My best recommendation to expats, returnees is to find other expats who have lived long enough and link with them. They have on the ground experiences and share same background as the returnees. But most importantly take time to do your research.

It's hard to "do your research" when everyone has an agenda. People say things like "be careful" without any real information. A few are willing to share but victims are often blamed and shamed. It becomes such a mix up of lies , drama and half truths. Even hiring a lawyer you can be scammed. I heard 90% of court cases are about land dispute. The year of return is a money grab sold with emotional marketing. Sad.

In Mexico. That almost happened to me. A realtor was selling land that she had no right to sell. My husband said It's best to go looking for the owner. We spent the weekend knocking on doors until we found the rightful owner. Then, I was able to buy a piece of land. I love the area. It has a picturesque view. In the States, we trust realtors. Outside of the States, we go looking for the owner and / or the chief. In Mexico, the head Jidal (common land owner of the area) You had me laughing so hard when she said I don't have any children. However, you could leave it to your niece or nephew.

The main thing to know when buying land in Ghana is that you have to do research and go to where the papers are for that piece of land to see who owns it. An uncle of an uncle who let a sister have it who gave it to her brother, then the brother decides it's his so he wants to sell it and does, then then the original person who gave the land to so and so says nope that's mine and you loose everything you gave to the last guy. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Ghanaians are some of the nicest people in the world, but if you learn anything, they don't do anything like the US does... it pays to do research. There are so many wonderful people who will help you!

We need our institutions to function properly ...it shouldn't be up to foreigners to come into our country to do research on land and property. Where do they start? Please find a country that understands that this nonsense is wrong and is serious about putting measures in place to stop this. Please check out countries like Kenya, Botswana, Rwanda etc they are not perfect but they are working very hard to put measures in place to make dealing with such matters easier not just
for their own but also diasporians...It starts with good leadership and a people who are willing to fight for it. I love my country but Ghana has a long way to go.

I just don’t understand some of these people. They have all these problems about being in Ghana and they complain so much so you will think they will stop going to Ghana. But noooo, they keep going there again and again. Girl what are you doing there? Go somewhere else because there are so many other countries in the continent but nope they know deep down, they still want to go to Ghana because there is something about Ghana they love. So I say to all these young people going there ,make sure you have your money right and do your due diligence before handing over your money . Your most wealthy building tool is your income. Take advantage of your companies 401k match and get out of debt and when you have done what you need to do financially, then you can survive and thrive in another foreign country.

Do you care to admit why the Chinese, Europeans, Lebanese, and Indians are fairing better while doing business in Ghana?
It is because of the "Colonized Minds" of some African Countries...they appear to be 'color struck'.
Anyone with pale skin is afforded better service and more opportunities than dark/melanated people.
Oh, Yes. I have assessed this situation from many angles during my travels to the African Continent.
The envy that SOME Africans have of westernized melanated people is palpable.
We are being punished because we share the same skin pigment as indigenous Africans, but have had, what is seen as, a more industrialized lifestyle.
Please remember that African Americans have already 'fought the good fight' with Caucasians.
We did not expect to go to, what is called, 'Our Motherland' to be cheated, disrespected, and be treated as second class beings under the Chinese, Caucasians, Lebanese, Indians...that you respect and love so much.
Of course THEY are not complaining. THEY are given their purchased land and are treated like royalty...nothing for THEM to complain about
      Wake Up!
Ghana will never achieve the economic and industrial heights it wants...if problems like this persist.
Ghana is mistreating The Apple Of YAH/God's Eye...because most of us are The Bloodline Israelites of The Bible.
