    Scenes end when they start to drag, or if they hit a high point that serves as a closing line. An experienced improv player feels the rhythm of their scenes, especially when performing on a team. One team member can signal the end of a scene by walking in front of it to center stage, as Amy Poehler does in the first scene here.

    Long form improv is so much fun. There's nothing like getting so deep into the group mind that you start to anticipate offers before they're made. Or maybe it just feels that way because you're so connected with your group. A great Harold is the best thing that can happen on any given stage.

    to me, that's the funniest thing about great improv, is that it comes together so naturally, it looks like it must have been prepared in advance. a really good improv show will inevitably have someone go home and give it a bad review on yelp, all "bullshit, no way they made that up on the spot." what do you even say to that? "sorry we had such a good show man, we'll try to fumble through the next one a little to make it look real for you"

    @BryanMoats 11 років тому +8

    I agree with you, Evan. Improv performers practice quite a bit to become very good, to make it feel seamless, solid, and as cohesive as something that was scripted. That is something that many people assume doesn't happen. Plus, groups like Asssscat have been performing together so long that they are familiar enough with each other to make scenes feel very professional and natural.

    A lot of people don't think this is funny. I understand why they simply don't get this. But if you study long form improv, it is very hard to do what these guys are doing in the video. However; long form improv is difficult for the general public to "get". If you are new to improv, most wouldn't understand the beats, group game, monologist etc....short form improv is a lot easier for the general public to "get" because it's quick, gets to the point, simple, but just as difficult, if not more difficult to pull off. I train at both the Groundlings, short form, and UCB, long form, (no I'm not an attention whore, I suck at both). Anyways, I train at both and I bring friends to both schools to watch shows. They always enjoy Groundling more than UCB because they simply cannot follow the form of UCB. The audiences are always great at UCB, but they packed with UCB students watching the shows, who understand the format. It feels a bit like preaching to the choir.

      Can anyone get good at improv? Is it genetic or can someone become good at it by only hard work?

    • @gerryisnotfunny
      @gerryisnotfunny 9 років тому +8

      Sanidhya Sharma of course you can learn how to do it. like anything it takes hard work to become good at it, but it's the hard work that is the fun part about it.

    • @jasondownsnet
      @jasondownsnet 9 років тому +12

      Sanidhya Sharma A agree with andalepues. I think most people can get pretty good, but it requires a lot of practice. The students who don't tend to improve much are the ones who just go to class once a week. It's really not enough practice. The students who get good tend to form practice groups, hire a coach on their own dime, and practice once or twice a week along with the actual class. I took classes off and on for two years, with little to no success. Then we formed a practice group, practice once a week, do a independent show once a week, and attend our required class. I can't believe how quickly I improved in a couple of months compared with two years of just classes alone. So yes, almost anybody can learn, it just requires extra effort, more than just the bare minimum required classes, and forming a practice group of your own.

      Jason Downs if you have read guru, del close says the audience is smart. you can't assume the audience is stupid because they're not. if you are having issues, more often than not it's the group chemistry not reaching the 'point' of the scene than the audience not getting it. i understood and laughed at this without taking improv.
      also you probably improved not because you didn't have enough class time, but you weren't comfortable or relaxed in them. improv and acting should be easy in theory, but it's really hard to break the 'shmold' you're in (your negative tendencies). the only rule is 'yes and' and it's not rocket science, but as you already know, it's really hard to say yes to everything.

    If you watch closely you'll notice that when a scene seems to lose direction, the blonde lady runs in a big circle around the outside of the scene and ends up centre front, and the actors in the scene all sit back down and she has to come up with a new scene because she interrupted.

      Mid 2000s (this being from 2005) US really carried the heritage from late 90s on. Gone were the geometry of early 90s and the florals as plastics of mid 90s, leaving the simple fabrics, prime colored surfaces and straight lines of the late 90s. While most parts of the world departed the fashion doctrines from US tv shows, the US kept the stylings into the late 2000s 😉
