Exploring Ukraine's Underground Rave Revolution
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 тра 2016
- The 2014 revolution brought Kiev nightlife to a complete standstill. As protests turned into riots, and government security forces opened fire on protestors, the country fell into crisis. But out of the ashes of revolution has risen a new generation. Slava Lepsheev, who’d lost his job because of the financial crisis triggered by the war, had had enough, and started Cxema, a raw, hard and hypnotic techno rave that he took to whatever semi-legal venue he could set a soundsystem up in. So together with Slava, and the city’s brightest young lights, we followed young Kiev as they prepared for a night at Cxema, from building the venue to watching the sunrise break.

A documentary about underground rave without actually letting us hear the underground rave. good job.
mustis M best comment mate duley noted that also pissed me off and I'd imagine any other raver watching

Disclaimer: I'm a 19-year-old lower middle class Ukrainian from Kyiv (where it all happens); some of my friends rave, I don't.
Even though I liked the video (script, camera work, lighting - outstanding), I certainly feel like it's heavily over-victimizing our rave culture. I don't blame i-D for this, I can see how they are constantly looking for powerful and touching stories. It seems to me i-D were looking for this kind of story here and people whom they interviewed gave them what they wanted. The truth is, despite the fact Ukrainian revolution did make a huge impact on our society, it wasn't nearly as devastating as you might guess from the video. It wasn't war-like devastating, you see. It was a huge mess, some people lost their jobs, but it wasn't devastating.
When the thing went off, I was your regular upper-working lower-middle class of age 15. 1 couldn't lose my job, simply because I couldn't have one. I also, thankfully, didn't lose any of my siblings. That said, I've been living in suburbs all my life and most of my close friends are coming from the working class, so I'm fairly sure I don't live in a bubble. I don't want to say it, but CXEMA is too much of a joke these days. It's expensive and most people go there for drugs, not music. I'm not a raver myself, but most of my raving friends don't take it seriously anymore. Think of hip underage amphetamine-driven girls in fancy clothes and you'll get the feel.
What happened in Ukraine is tragic and I know there's lots of pitiful stories associated with it, but it has little to do with rich spoiled brats you'll find behind the doors of CXEMA.
Thanks for putting this video in context. Good luck bruh.
Your English is flawless.
Thanks for clarifying.
Where would you go for the real stuff? When I was in Kyiv I went to CLOSER and Green Theater for someones birthday rave thing.
but i liked the music tho
They represent about 0.10% of Ukrainian youth. A lot of things they say are very subjective.
Like every subculture duh...
that percentage also deserves to tell heir story.
Like the people who eat their cheerios soft.
I’m wary of the Graphenburg family when it comes to raves or (g)rafen. They are trying to take over the ‘sponge spot’ or howeven outres dit. The man just didn’t discover the spot: I’m siding avec a natural name over a family name.
Nice statistic, where you get that from? Bet, it's from your head, not farther.
i feel so sad for the ppl of Ukraine,,,,i hope divine intervention takes place, and these souls can be free once again....love to Ukraine from Scotland
I just love how everything is filmed and edited . I feel like you can transmit the vibe of the places I honestly feel like I'm living that moment. It's just great!
i lika people. all so different.. and like frome futuristic movies
true, i-D somehow took the VICE-style documentary to the next level.

never thought about this side of the ukraine, since all im ever seeing in the media is war, its great too see them so happy about life
средства массовой информации попросту промывают вам мозг,много чего пишется в мире,на самом деле может и не происходить.
You won't really find truly happy people at raves. Hence the drugs and going to parties to forget
you're right, they're trying to forget something most people isn't even aware of. their life and its reality, their surrounding and its mentality. happy is a difficult thing to be
Most of them are stupid bastards whose parents have planty of money. Yes we have a real war in Ukraine, but they are just dancing and say "i do not care". They are stupid adult chidren.
A lot of people and youngsters in particular in Ukraine are oblivious about war. Why, it is their peers who are being wounded and dying right now in the east defending the country. These are just immature little jerks who didn't pass the test of adulthood.
Respect and support for you guys! Noone knows what you're going through and what techno means in this hour more than Georgians.
Tbilisi stands for you!
We dance together!
We fight together!

it'S all about how you look, what you wear, and MDMA... great job guys... you're saving the world. cheers
Jeezus Christ, they lost their jobs, the country is war torn, they feel they have nothing to live for, let them have their raves.

@@semilanceatta4422 lmaooo
Ok the documentary itself doesn't speak about drugs, but the girl with the shaved head in the beginning stated that there were more drugs coming in after the crisis. Soooo it's not like they cut it out or something but it isn't the focus of this docu, it's about them organizing and building parties from the ground up. The passion behind creating an atmosphere and a party is so much more worth than the drugs that people use at such events, it's just an extra but not even close the most important part which is atmosphere and the underground music played at these raves.
Как интересно связали революцию и молодых людей, которые про*бывают время
Ааааа... все рашкованы пишут одно и тоже. Такое палево, иваны :)
I loved it, it's so nice to see young people living the way they want, happy, having fun, fighting the memories of the tragedy with music.

Great mini-doc. Though I have to say I kind of miss a presenter who is actually present, not just a disembodied voice. Like the one about Korea's beauty industry.
But definitely cool and informative.
Wow, fashionistas capitalising on the depressed wages of Ukrainian factory workers...what a fascinating cultural development
That scene looks awesome and the music sounds great. They look silly acting hard, you don't have to be a bad ass to have fun.. Music is the real drug at the end of the day.
YES! This is like back in the fuckin' dizzay with warehouses and crumbling decay and illegal "we don't play nice with cops" attitude! FUCK YES!! And they play MY kind of rave music: Four on the Floor TECHNO with the particular flavour I most enjoy: HARD, DEEP and DARK AS FUCK! HI Can I hang with you guiz!?!?!?
back in the dizzay wasn´t hipster as fuck
*shrugs* As someone in their 40's with a face still full of steel, huge lobes, tongue split, covered in ink and a tendency to wear all black, I could care less what other people are wearing or not wearing. What I care about is VIBE, general attitude, the way people treat each other. What I care about is sick tunes. And in general, freedom, especially at events like this.
Anything that can capture the spirit or essence of what I remember fondly as the wave of rave immediately following the warehouse Detroit scene that I got to personally experience makes me happy. But then, I have simple tastes, and am in general one of those easy to please, easy to gt along with types.
nice one, man.

Im proud of Ukraine that there is a subculture like this! 🦑🔥
Greetings from Germany (sorry 4 bad englisch)
In Deutschland haben wir die exakt gleiche Subkultur, ein paar Freunde gehen regelmäßig zu raves, schmeissen Teile und kleiden sich ähnlich wie die im Video
I hope we can dance and fight through the music together guys soon!!! ❤❤❤
I wonder if Pasquale Rotella has seen this yet... So many PLUR vibes in this whole scene. Good to see that the raver vibe exists even in dark times.
Very impressed with this documentary. Everything from the video editing to the choice of music has left me speechless. I originally come from Oryol, Russia, however chose to leave the country due to its lack of opportunities in terms of creative arts and education. In comparison to Russia, London has taught me about the rave culture/fashion much earlier. The main thing I've learned about being in the UK - is that it allows you to be who the fuck you want to be (and still be respected by others). These young individuals are truly managing to break the boundaries in a country which still has to do a lot of catching up. Best of luck to all of you out there in Ukraine. Be free and do what you love the most - create!!!
Pavel Stupin tell me how you just moved out of russia single handedly..
this video is amazing, cinematography and editing is f*ing great. ic got to say this again, cinematography is stunning!!! thanks
Other countries when they hit a job crisis, they work harder, Ukraine just parties lol
Joseph Harding you haven't been in Spain I think...
Not everything in this video is true. Conscious people defend our eastern borders from the russian madness or rise damaged economy. Just a small group of rats permits themselves to dance in their holes during the war.
They are just smarter. They know that there's more serious people then them. So they making their time more fun, and work as well. They work. Im pretty sure they are working.
Dear Molly, i invite you to visit Ukraine to see that kid-thinking junkies (which probably you will even not find) and to compare them with people who "make their time more fun" in Donbass. They're not smarter, they're just shameless
Well, I would do prolly same thing that they are doing. Im more about the culture. And I hate countries. Nations. Large groups. I think that's the stupidest thing, that needs to exist. In some type of way, they keeping culture going. You can't live working. Look at us, Poles, we were living working after war. Now we don't have any culture, we just take everything from USA, and other countries. Our country is boring. Everything is black and white. Some of us migrate to other countries, just cuz of that. People need to have fun, without that, you will end like Poles. Boring, scared of every type of standing out (it's changing), focused on work, drinking a a lot (in not good type of way). They keeping people having fun, they are not boring. Let's pretend that's their work.
I already miss grace ...

wow this made me very happy..I do admire how they found the escape, turning into something much more, building a new culture while surviving in harsh enviroments...bless those kids, keep on, good luck! ^_^
I am from Eastern Europe , and i find this really sad.... the situation in almost every eastern country is similiar like this one... and the young ones suffer the most
It's great to see something positive from Ukraine. Those of you debating as to why most of them are speaking in Russian, why do you care? You're missing the point - these people just want to have a good time and they deserve it after what they have had to deal with. I definitely will be visiting Kiev again very soon after watching this! ;-)

It's rave, of course it feels old. You air maxes or air jordans or air forces or adidas superstars, whatever you're wearing, they're all from 90s too.. or even older.
my nineties were a lot of fun ! ;))
axel rose in one way it is America and Europe are very very further, plus people in USSR didn't have 90's you couldn't even wear jeans back then, so yeah it is 90's of the future
exatly, in france we live's that's ins 90'... 30 years old!! thanks russia? ps: am french! and i looove rave party!
Mariam M, people in USSR didn't have 90-s because in 90-s there was no USSR. It collapsed in 1991 lol. In early 90's Russia or Ukraine you could buy heroin or a ten-year-old prostitute in the center of the city, crowds of children were sniffing glue on the streets and you think someone cared about jeans? Even in USSR in late 80-s you could wear whatever you want because of perestroika. Soviet music fest -

This is so beautifully shot
Guys, come to Georgia .The underground rave revolution is in full swing, here, in Tbilisi.Every day i read more and more western articles about the growing electro music micro-climate in Georgia. Clubs like Bassiani , which is located under a football arena in a abandoned swimming-pool and Khidi , which is a club inside of a bridge , are already talked about by the Berlin and Amsterdam underground communities. The whole thing has kinda Woodstock-ish feeling about it .Tbilisi became the epicenter of techno in the region. Come you won't be dissapointed.
Oversimplified, overdramatized and slightly hipsterized piece. But not too bad.
They play really dope music, and slay in their clothes, but what they say is just shallow, careful information about the situation in Ukraine. It’s obvious they didn’t really care of what was and is happening in the country, they just wanted to seem alarmed for you guys, for the filming crew. They are the kind of people who run from the problems our country is facing to the world of showing off , dancing and , possibly, drugs. Thats a complete misrepresentation of Ukrainian youth.
Доречі, я з Украіни.
Problems are made by humans and the society we live in. Blow it all up and let people be free. But no people rather make war, wage slaves, consumption society, pollution, etc. It's all because of governments, money, greed and who get's which part of a country. All bullshit made up by mankind. We made life so much more difficult that it already was tbh. I'm not saying that what they are doing is good, they are consumption based too if you see how to all want new and trendy clothing etc. , and they should turn face to the problems instead of run away from them but even better would be that there wouldn't be any problems at all to begin with but of course politics and economy is always trouble.
That’s people in every country lol

this was great. if it wasn't for all the intense homophobia in ukraine id totally love to live there
There is no racism in big cities, especially in Kiev . Just don't go to districts where you don't need to be and nothing bad will happen to you
+Lena Alekseienko did you mean homophobia? but thats very informative. Ukraine is a beautiful beautiful place. I might just pursue a nomadic life style so i can live in many places
+Namratha Sri sorry, I meant actually both. In Kiev we have gay clubs and bars, and people go there to dance and I never hear about fights there or any troubles, Ukrainian much more open minded than you think
+Lena Alekseienko oh wow! thats very cool. It's weird hearing about ohter countries and not experiencing them. because it's easy to judge countries from what you've wheras you've never had first hand experience. Thank you for reminding me that everything isn't as it seems
