Not that hard. Percussionists learn playing on multiple drums before highschool so once you're in highschool, though it is very intimidating, its not as hard as you'd think it is. Bass is actually harder depending on the music you write.

We also have a band of like 40 people. Big bands are just so cool to us. (also Personal thing, EVERY OTBER BAND MARCHES BARI BUT MY BAND DIRECTOR REFUSES TO LET ANYONE MARCH BARI)
It was crazyyyyyy getting to see this, especially as a Freshman who’s band was constantly performing last. Getting to JMU was insane, and we were not prepared to compete at a level like this lol

I was at a comp once and there was this one part that this really rich high school did where they had a color guard member wear a giant red dress and then they fucking pretended to burn her on a like 65 foot tall stake as if she was a witch, and then the dress “unfurled” and turned into like a 50 foot “tent” of sorts below her. They were doing some kind of narrative based performance with like a story. Shit was nuts.

Im a tenor player aswell and our first comp was last saturday. In our closer me and our other tenor player goes up ramp props but they were slick and i fell HARD. Luckily I recovered and got props from the judges, and to top it all off we got 1st place in our division (4A) best percussion overall and reserved gc.
Virginia Competitions are clearly that intense. I don't know about the scores at that exact competition, pretty sure this was the highest scoring at parade of champions that year, I could be wrong though, but the first competition in the vmbc circuit that season they came second in their class to a science school
for the record, there were 5 bands in Westfield's class, And all had 83.98 or above Westfield with an 86.25 and the group that beat them with an 88.38 on SEPTEMBER 18TH

Ah, yes. The James Madison University Parade of Champions. Recognize that stadium anywhere. This is probably Chantilly or some gnarly, rich band. Edit: it's Westfield. The last Parade of Champs I played in (18 or so years ago), Chantilly took it. I can remember sitting about right where this camera is. Our top bass marked a good five or six hashes too far in the way in and stayed that way until the ballad, if i recall correctly. Ah, good times.

I was the flute that was on the knee scooter for that season, last time I checked Westfield doesn’t give the band any budgets. Only reason how we have props is the band boosters/band parents
Reminds me of my highschool band during my senior year, we had a circus themed show. The band directors saw a bunch of our talents from last years band camp talent show. So they worked it into the show. My friend was playing accordian, some color guard girl was doing a little contortion, two kids were riding unicycles, another girl in the second movement was doing aerial silks (yes we had a rig), and I was the announcer for the show (the whole "Ladies and gentleman..." Thing). Near the final part of our shows 3rd movement, right at the climax of the song we turned around this field prop, and it was a spinning wheel that our drum captain (snare) was strapped to, and yes he was playing while spinning. I'll never forget it, everytime we did that show at a competition we got a standing ovation it was a great feeling.
Gave it a thumbs up because it looks like a tough thing to perfect. But, you could still be musical and win in contest without the gimmick. Great band, great sound.
