Hey Mike, congratulations on the best of show! Well deserved! After all this time I am still going through your sand and painting videos. I’m getting closer, the mechanicals are almost done. I keep going back through looking for bits of info will be my first painting experience. Looking at your sanding steps paper for the umpteenth time. Wondering for content if you could put together a sanding steps, and paint steps on a white board all together in one video, instead of me going back searching through all of them! Thanks and a beautiful job.
Hello Randy Thank you, Those painting videos were done a few years ago and apply to the PPG system at that time. Other brands and other types of paints might require a different process. Im glad what we have is somewhat helpful but it's always a good idea to know what paint system you will be using before undergoing body work. Paint systems are not interchangeable. I would say the videos are a good reference to the basic painting principles and sanding grits between coats. The new videos Im working on with Duane are super important to watch if you are in bare metal stages and paint mockup. Please be sure to watch them in their entirety and that should give you the absolute best results. Wishing you the best of luck and please let us know how things are turning out! Cheers
The level and attention to detail you put into everything is just amazing. Slowly working my way through the series and have picked up so many tips. I think the only problem is my own project keeps getting more scope as I see what you have done. Rob.
Hello Rob Thanks Its a lot of work for sure..and amazing how many details will need to be addressed during a restoration. The factory guys had a supreme advantage as they had crews and crews of guys working on them during assembly Also they were assembling using new parts. Reconditioning everything first by one pair of hands takes several years. Lots of patience and determination I have total confidence you can can do it!
Looking amazing, like everyone says we're waiting for the mechanicals and to see this beautiful machine finished and on the road. You will have to have an unveiling and we can all gathe from around the world to celebrate.
Hi Nick Thank you=) Your comment is very flattering and so funny I can't stop laughing You have a fantastic sense of humor=) Where do you think we should do this unveiling? How about Las Vegas? Everyone is invited!
Hey Mike, thanks for the detail on the steering wheel. I had no idea they were painted. Always thought it was over-molded plastic on metal frame (but mine isn't original!). Looks fantastic, and as you mentioned should stay that way for many many years. Great stuff, and looking forward to your ongoing journey.
Hi John Thanks Yes you are right..the original wheel was a vinyl or plastic type material stretched over the rim..The only way I could think of to replicate it was to build up various layers of 2k urethanes and finish it off with a flat skin Looks close to original and feels nice. Its original condition wasn't bad but had several cracks and tears in the plastic wrap. I sanded all of it off and started to build it back from the core. Cant wait to see it installed!
This Porsche is really turning out nice. Thanks for making these videos, they have given me the confidence to do my own paint & bodywork on my 911 project.
Hi Calvin You are very welcome=) Its my pleasure Confidence is half the battle! If its your first time to paint a car just stick with those MGF spec sheets to the letter and you'll be fine=) I wish you the best of luck!!
Hi Mike! Greeting from Slovakia! Porsche start looking very good. Will there be videos of technical parts? Rebuilding engine, playing with suspension, etc? I watched all videos in one day :D as a painter I can say only one thing, good work!
Hi Michal Greetings! wow Slovakia..very cool! I must say your english is fantastic Yes will be continuing past paint and going through all systems of the car I think you should get an award for enduring these videos all day! I can't believe it
Mike M thank you, you are very kind 😁 I am looking forward to see other stuff! With you level of quality that will be really something. I dont think I will be able to sell Porsche after amount of work like ths, but as they say, everything have a price tag if you have right amount of money 😉
Hi Michal Yes would be very difficult to part with..incredible amount of work to restore this car. Its a beauty though and will really enjoy to drive when she is finished Some fun technical stuff coming up!
Really enjoy your videos. My 912 steering wheel is deeply scratched. How can I remedy this prior to the painting process ? What did you do to your wheel before painting ?
Hello John, You might try resin epoxy to fill and voids and then an epoxy primer. What ever you decide to use as a base will need lots of detailed sanding for preparation. Good Luck!
Hi Viko Interior of car is is POR 15 and will be covered over with sound proof matting and carpet. Seat rail support were painted with VHT black high temp paint. You can use POR 15 for rail supports also.. Back seat hump over the transmission is also POR 15
Mike thanks so much for the quick response. I love your channel - it’s hypnotic and inspiring how much detail and care you go into.. Are you going for as ‘as it came out of the factory look’ or are you doing it as you want it to look..? I understand the interiors were more of a satin finish than the gloss effect of POR15...
Thanks Viko The Finished look of this build should look very accurate to factory original specs.. I will keep the customizing to a bare minimum. Ultimately it will just be a smoother more shined up version than the original. Using modern materials and finishing products will be an improvement to 60s technology. This car was black inside although later versions were color. POR comes in different sheens but I went with the gloss as the contrast looks nice with the satin dash and under dash areas. Most interior coating will be covered permanently with sound deadening materials
quick question Mike, are you happy with your Ingersoll Rand compressor? It looks like a 2-stage 60gal, is it the single phase 5hp model? How well does it keep up with that SATAjet?
Hi Calvin Yes very happy=) No problem keeping up with that RP or the shutz gun Shutz gun is quite an air hog. I had a single stage 5hp same unit..lasted 15 years! Motor just got tired so I thought Id try a 2 stage. Works great for all spraying needs but it couldn't keep up with the sand blasting. Kept overheating the motor and had to put fans on it to stop it from shutting off. The new unit is a single phase 5hp 2stage the old unit was a single phase 5hp Single stage but I think the older motors were a bit better quality than the newer versions. Still they are excellent value for the money I think
