late to the party, my therapist also recommended i adopt a dog as an emotional support animal too. and omg i totally feel you on the frustration on the process of adopting from a shelter/rescue, especially as apartment renters!
luckily, a year later, my husband and i were able to adopt a wonderful golden retriever pittie mix puppy from a local rescue. congrats on your new family member! 🥳 hope dog life has been treating you two well! 🧡
Actually I’m really impressed the shelters are screening that well! I volunteer at a shelter and they barely screen anyone and so many dogs get returned because of apartments and being dog reactive/jumpers/climbers. It happens all the time. new dog owners are pretty oblivious to just how much time/energy/patience it takes to own a dog. They need decompression time and months to settle in and build a bond.
Shelters that don’t adopt to renters are keeping dogs from getting good forever homes.

I lived in Indianapolis in an apartment that allowed me to have a pitbull. Because it allowed pitbulls 95% of the apartments had dogs. There was a police officer living downstairs. He got a discount on rent because he patrolled the property twice a day. He told me he pulled up the records for the property and because of all the dogs there hasn't been a single break-in in over 5 years in any apartment on the property. It's too bad a property managers don't realize the dogs make their tenants so much safer. They prevent robberies and assaults and they never have to even encounter a criminal to do it.
Great puppy advice, and thank you for adopting from a rescue.
But your right a lot of shelters are overly picky and have lots of red tape and can be a nightmare to adopt from it’s really sad
i’m 16, i graduated highschool when i was 15 and now college is online too, so i wanted something to take care of and i remembered i could get a dog so ive been up alllll night (it’s 5am lol) looking at possible doggies from shelters and i found a pretty girl named rita, they’re unsure what breed she is but it’s something with chihuahua and they found her raising two of her puppies on the streets turns out she was being used to breed puppies and the conditions were horrible! she looks like the sweetest girl ever so im gonna see about adopting her soon😁😁
I went through the adoption ordeal too. It took me about three years to adopt a dog. It was extremely frustrating. So much so, that I quit looking a few times. There’s no industry standards or rules for shelters and agencies. They can and do act Anyway they want. No accountability! But it’s what we have and it is what it is. Many people are turned away while dogs are being euthanized. It’s a crazy situation!
Me and my wife had a pit/ lab he loved the water and he would keep his mom safe if I was not home. He loved people as long as I was with him. But would not let anyone around his mom unless I was there.😊 And the funny thing is we got him at Walmart lol for free. His name was Smokey. Be sure to let her sleep in your bed as well we did Smokey for all of his life now my wife and Smokey is in heaven. How I miss them.

Thank you for adopting that beautiful baby. But don't chew gum, an ugly practice. I adopted both my kids, and having a very secure yard was about the first stipulation. I rent. It was my old dog, Kelly, when I first moved here. She passed away, I got Sputnik, and 3 years later, I broke the rules, by adopting Kay. But after what she'd been through, I had to, no choice. The owner wasn't happy, but after explaining her case, he relented. With an adamant, NO MORE!!!

Your puppy should have 2 or 3 heats before spaying.

You should educate your self and cook for her and not feed commercial anything. This has been my philosophy for decades and very successful. I change foods all of the time, no upset at all.
