Should a BMW M850i Be My Next Daily?

- Is the BMW M850i the right candidate to be my next daily driver in Germany? After the departure of the M5 earlier this year, no real replacement has arrived but it's time to think about fixing that! The M850i offers style and elegance, with ample power and a degree of practicality, so what do we think?
Joining BMW UK in Spain I drive the M850i and also the 840d back to back to get a feel for whether it would be the right choice on a second outing. With the 8 Series Coupe having recently arrived, these are the two models that are available for now although they will be joined by an M8 in future - a prototype for which I recently experienced. No doubt the M8 Gran Coupe will be an incredible car but for the time being it's rather far away to start thinking about at this stage.
The M850i has 520PS and 750nm from the 4.4 twin turbo V8, delivered through permanent xDrive as opposed to the switchable M xDrive system that's found in the M5 and future M8. To drive it has a huge dynamic range from being gentle and relaxed to confident and sporty at the other extreme, but does the Coupe shape take away too much of the practicality? I'm a big fan of the new 8, particularly with regards to its looks and from the amount of engagement from you guys on previous videos with it, I rather get the impression you are too.
So, with the M5's replacement never arriving thanks to a change in legislation that pulled the car off sale that I intended to add to the garage, would this be the right call for the next 12 months to blast around Europe, including many Autobahn outings?

What about adding a new BMW M850i to the garage for daily driver duties? It seems to tick a lot of boxes, I'm a big fan of driving it, and it rather seems like you guys like it too... so, what about it?

Hi Shmee, I think it would be a fair decision to add one to your fleet, but in my opinion wait for the M8, then add both DBS and M8 together in your garage. Can't wait for your Ford GT and Mclaren Senna

@@Shmee150 Actually, this morning fotos of the M8 Competition without diguise have been leaked. Just google M8 Leak, it should come right up. Its really really good looking. Im from Munich and I am super proud of what they have done with it.

The M850i certainly would be a good addition to your garage Shmee and would be one of the perfect grand tourers ever in your garage and certainly does pack the opulence and the elegance of a supercar but at the same time the comfort of a luxury car making for the perfect package in our current era. Also, if you do add it please take the blue or the red colour it really makes the car stand out. Great video Shmee. Shquad!!!

You should definitely get one! It looks so good and its an amazing autobahn cruiser. The only negative thing about it is that its limited to 250kph and i believe there is no option to get rid of that limiter. It would be nice to go a bit faster on the german autobahn :p
Interesting, I'm surprised there's no M Driver's Package to raise that but will look into it! Would be a shame not to exercise the 300km/h blasting ability
@@Shmee150 yeah i'm also surprised that there is no M driver's package for it. You should check it out for yourself though, i might be wrong or have wrong informations. But like i said, you should get one if you like it!

@Stitch you could do that yes. But its funny how they dont offer it from factory. They offer the M drivers package on all of the other M cars. Well thinking about it, its maybe because this is not a proper M car like the M3, M4, M5 are. Its more of a 850i with a few or less M parts than proper M cars have. Just like the M240i is not a proper M car for example. I could imagine the M8 when it comes out has no such limiter or you atleast can get the M driver's package

I don't know how BMW manage to package less space inside the 8 Series than you get in a 4 Series coupe. However I look forward to the Grand Coupe and am really pleased that BMW have finally added 4WD to the UK versions. Might have to wait to get a one year old one though.

Would be a nice daily for you. Though, the 40d wont get a problem with diesel-ban in Frankfurt. It only affects Euro1-4 from Feb 2019 and Euro 5 from September 2019. The 40d is Euro6. Still I'd rather take the M850i as fuelmoney doesnt seem to be a problem and V8 always wins. Maybe compare this to your dads DB11.

As an all rounder for Europe u should also consider the amg gt 63 s, practical, powerful, aggressive looks

Surprised you didn't touch on the Integral active steering here, Makes the car feel properly small to navigate around town, also no exhaust clips but the 850i is approaching the sound that an AMG makes and even the 840d sounds okay from the outside as long as it has the exhaust!
Definitely consider one and then upgrade to an M8/M8 Competition a year later!!
my wanting to see an M car in your garage goes all the way back to the days of the M4 and X6M press cars you were loaned. I think an M850i could be a great addition to the collection, and even the M8 down the road. And seeing as you sound pretty enthusiastic about the idea, I'm guessing it's inevitable. I just hope you go for an original spec with a bit more exciting interior choice. Suggestion: replicate the spec of the last daily you had "the FF" dark blue exterior with crema interior. #shquad

No need for me to run the wipers as the driver there was nothing in my eye-line, but like I said I literally had about 30 mins with the car so the last thing on my mind was running indoors to find something to spend 10 of those minutes cleaning it with xD

I still think the M8 definitely warranted the V12 perhaps supercharged (from the 760Li) or the a refined version of the glorious V10 (S85B50) from my E63 M6!

I think the v10 is not a good engine. It sounds very good but it has rod bearings issue as Hell. So I dont think BMW will use the s65b50 engine anymore. Even this socalled new v8 is also having issues so the best engine they have is the v12 from the 7 series. So the v10 and the rod bearings issue will steer me way off cars with that engine, sorry.""
