The scientific name for a Dummy foal is Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome (NMS)
Due to certain hormones, foals are in a sleeping state during pregnancy. As a result, for example, they are not mobile and cannot harm the mare. During birth, and especially due to the pressure in the birth canal, the hormone composition changes and the foal is active soon after birth to stand up and look for the udder.
In a dummy foal, the 'sleep hormone' is still present in a high concentration and it therefore wanders around in a very dazed state. Dummy foals are also called ‘wanderers’ for that reason. There is no urge to look for the udder and the sucking reflex has not yet been activated. Belle was not actually 'awake' yet🧡

This happens in sheep, too. Sandi Brock of Sheepishly Me has several lambs every year that need to be tube fed for a day or two (or three) before they go in with the "bottle babies". They're Dummy Lambs.

I am not receiving replies sometimes, but can you perhaps tell Yvonne maybe for future emergencies, if the chance to get some extra colostrum shows up, it can be frozen to give to foals in the future? I've heard of them doing this with Sheep Colostrum. Then its a bit safer than trying to milk the mare who may not be happy with a human so close.
I saw another channel with this. They did a trick to try to reproduce the birth canal by wrapping a band around the chest of the foal and suddenly releasing it. On the third try it worked. Apparently it can happen with calves too. I have been around cattle my whole life and had not heard of it. So very glad that Coralle is such a brilliant mem! And Yvonne was so patient and diligent. Amazing!

Corella was very anxious in the beginning with Yvonne handling her foal, but she then realized that Yvonne was trying to help and relaxed. When Belle latched on, released and latched on again, Corella looked straight at Yvonne as if to say thank-you!
Not all was for nothing. You've completely imprinted yourself to Belle these first few hours. She is already inquisitive as to what you are doing. That means a lifetime bond that cannot be broken. May God bless little Belle with good health always!
She definitely is Unieks child. So curious, yet willing to have a hand pet her, the hand of Yvonne who has a way a God given way for the horses and babies she tends to. I'm so glad Uniek got to see her baby, and if anyone noticed Corelle did not seem to mind Uniek standing guard .

I couldn't hardly breathe either, from the beginning All I could think about as I watched was watching Corelle ,remembering how she was when she first came here. Did not want Yvonne to have anything to do with her, now patiently she helped as Yvonne tenderly and lovingly helped Belle nurse finally!! ❤❤❤❤

Coralle wasn't used to being touched when she first came to your barn. But you got her used to having you close, which was wonderful as she didn't panic and attack you when you handled Belle. Mares can be so protective of their foals and you were there in a crowded box between Coralle and her foal. It was as if she knew something was wrong and you were there to help. Amazing work you did.

Once a dummy foal does get a sleep, it's like it realizes it's born now, and "reboots". When they first get up, they can't lay down, so getting them down to rest is the hard part. Especially because they 'wander'.

Really great the way that Coralle understood what you were trying to accomplish and waited while you did what you needed to do. Listening to Belle drink was ASMR levels of awesome.

I am very amazed by Corella. She is the perfect mother for Belle. Her level of patience is astounding. Her level of knowing when to ignore instinct so you could help Belle. She is very bonded to Belle. I am so glad you shared her journey with us. Yes it was stressful, and you were exhausted but you kept your composure and just pressed on. Now look at the result of that. You and Corella were a true team.

My stomach was in a knot the entire time she wouldn’t nurse. I’ve never heard of a “dummy foal” before. It shows what perseverance and love can do. Work miracles. Having Belle will help heal your broken heart. I still can’t believe that glorious mare is gone. There will only be one Uniek.
Even knowing it worked out in the end ahead of time, it was so stressful to watch her struggle like that! Oh my God... the relief and joy when she began to suckle!!!! Coralle is an AMAZING Mom!!!! So incredibly patient! She stood like a statue when Belle finally latched on, not daring to move!

Right? It's been a long time since she had a foal if it was in 2019 and she was already looking for it when she was in labour and passed a hoof. She's a much calmer mother than many of the friesians we've seen who move around or have sore udders so have a hard time letting the foal latch the first time. Corralle was doing everything she could to help, even letting a human milk her and wrestle her baby, she seemed to understand.

Never been so happy to see and hear this filly singing her nursing song guzzling away at the milk bar what a beautiful joy filled noise. Belle is a survivor and I know Coralle must be relieved to finally feel her little one drinking under her at last. When everything finally clicked and Belle Uniek figured it out and latched on, she was one hungry foal 💯. She definitely made up for lost time and when she couldn't nurse anymore, laid down and took a well deserved nap! I could hear all the sighs of relief out in cyber world, even tho Yvonne had told us previously that all was well. Goedzo Yvonne, Bauke, Coralle and especially Belle Uniek ❤️❤️❤️

I was surprised by “dummy foal.” I had never heard that before. If someone had told me that Yvonne could work with Belle so closely, I’d probably been skeptical because Coralle would be too protective. And Yvonne, you worked so hard to show Belle how to suckle, for so many hours. Your dedication to her was selfless and kind. So happy for you that it worked. Love in the barn. I've heard of it before but never seen it. Apparently it's not really a thing for us humans or dogs and cats. But animals like horses, cattle, sheep etc must lie very still when they are inside their mothers or they will cause a miscarriage. Human babies will wake up, stretch, kick, etc, but foals do not. They have a hormone that keeps them asleep and still until they are born. If something goes wrong in the birthing process the hormone doesn't shut down soon enough and they are dazed after being born
Coralle is SUCH a good mom! And her trust in Yvonne is amazing. ( of course Yvonne is amazing…❤).
Very few new moms would allow anyone or anything to interact so much with her newborn foal. How fortunate to have her as Belle’s surrogate!

So happy you were there to help Belle out of the birth canal! The dummy foal syndrome could have been more pronounced the longer her oxygen supply was limited..but being such a large foal made things more complicated. And look at her now, what a big beautiful girl she is. Thank you for sharing your journey together with all of us.

@@johndoe-ss8dr What a nice question😊 When I met her for the first time at Stal G, she was standing in her box and at first looked as if she thought “ohh no, there's another groupie”. But her curiosity took over and then she thought it was fine to cuddle for a while. The most beautiful moment was her nose against my cheek. Her exhale felt like a kiss🥰
The second meeting was in Yvonne's meadow, but then the grass was much more interesting. Of course😂
But with Yvonne she was at her best. The connection between them is truly magical.
And yes, I also had the opportunity to meet Lianne and everyone else at Stal G❤️ And ladies man Wûnder! He even became a little too clingy. Really a boefke😆❤️

Coralle was such a diva when she came to Stall H...taking over as head mare and giving all the other horses the business in the meadow. Taking on a role for Uniek's sake that was not even her own blood, literally. And now she is doing her very best to care for this delicate little girl with high needs. I say Hail, Coralle! You are also a Queen. I hope Belle thrives and grows into the image of the mother who made her from the care and love of the mother who birthed her. So good to see you eating on your own, Little Belle, and sleeping so content.

Thank you so much for explaining what “dummy foal” meant. I don’t like the term, so it was really good for me to hear the “scientific” words! This was quite a learning experience! I was so happy to see Belle Uniek nursing on her own! Yay! It was wonderful to see Yvonne so happy! It was also so precious to hear Yvonne say, “I Love Horses!” She had such a big smile! It really made me happy to see and hear Yvonne happy! It must have felt frustrating for Yvonne; but she keeps right on trying, and giving time for Corelle and Belle to rest! I remember how nervous Coralle was at first with Yvonne touching Belle but look how she is now - so confident that Yvonne is helping. And despite the chaos and confusion, Coralle stayed standing still so Belle could learn. Coralle is indeed an awesome horse and mom!

It looked so obvious Coralle knew Yvonne was there to help her foal. Coralle stood so still as Yvonne chased after Belle, moving her closer and closer. It was like Coralle knew what her job was and didn't get in Yvonne's way. So cool to watch.

Every time Yvonne says "dummy foal" my heart clenches. Belle seems so perfect to me that I can't believe she has a complication. Besides, a loving and very feisty person like Yvonne wouldn't deserve it.

When Rising Star came to Uniek, he latched like a champion because he wanted to live. That kid fought hard and that's why people shouldn't give up on him, even though he's disabled. I'm glad that Belle finally figured out how to feed.

What a long, exhausting night and morning for the moms! Thank goodness Coralle became less reactive toward Yvonne as time passed. Yvonne, you showed your love in not giving up until Belle awoke from her hormone induced “sleep.” You saved Belle’s life. I had never heard of NMS before, and I think calling it a “sleeping foal” or “sleepwalking foal” is a much more accurate term for this condition, as “dummy” connotes a lack of intelligence. Obviously, suffering from a hormone induced sleep state is entirely separate from instinctual and mental capacity. Belle has every chance at a full life now!💜
I wonder if it's more common in some breeds than others. Despite her years of experience and training, Yvonne had heard of it but not seen it. Some commenters are saying they see it often. Friesians just might not often go through this (whew!).
