Bravo! 👏🏽 to the first responders and the quick decision to call mayday.
Sure , first responder have been remarkable during this calamity! Kudos to them!
Really? You think that's impressive? You think no one else would think to call first responders quickly?

So sad all the way around : I’m glad those merchant sailors made that mayday call . No one starts their day wanting to be involved in such a tragic incident. Prayers to the families and community.
You mean harbor pilots they’re from Baltimore pilots who guide them in and out on a certain buoy until it’s is safe for the ship to start on their own voyage it’s the pilot who called not the sailors onboard these American pilots are heroes
@@virgilioangtimonel7625 - how do you know who made the call? And what does it matter? What matters is that the call was made, saving some lives that would've otherwise been lost.

Hard to believe they shut down lanes within 3 min. Good thing it was 1am vs 1pm.
Theres a weigh station at the foot of the bridge thats why. Theres always a police presence.

Does this bridge have traffic light control? I’ve only crossed it once many years ago so I don’t remember. The Delaware river bridge on 95 has traffic lights across all lanes so if that was the case with the Baltimore bridge they could have just turned all the lights red. This is a tragedy, my prayers go out to the bridge worker’s family’s and the city.
@@RetiredEMT96 No. There were no traffic lights for this bridge
Agree
Nobody is talking about the fact that there was no emergency communication equipment available to the workers on the bridge. They were out there on their own without any thought to their safety.
Right!? You would think they would’ve had something to warn them like a walkie talkie, even a phone sos for them or something. Such a preventable tragedy if they had more emergency safety warnings in place for them. 😢
Like somehow the police weren't able to contact the crew that they needed off the bridge. Why?
@@ssjgogetadbzgtperhaps the police did not have a number to call and thus were seeking a niumber to call. Sometimes a little thing like contact numbers can make avdifference when you are minutes from disaster. This should be changed on any construction site like this. And the workers might have been working with something noisy that they didn't hear the attempts to warn.
The ship did call an emergency. That gave local security on shore time to clear the bridge of traffic.
The emergency communication equipment worked Very well.
Not enough time to travel to the middle of the bridge and warn them and get off i'd imagine. No way to call them or anything. they were all alone. Should have red emergency strobe lights on bridge that mean get off bridge now. Im sure stuff will change because of this horrible accident like most tragedies @@ssjgogetadbzgt

Lesson: Big ships crossing under a Bridge must be assisted by TUGS, similar to passing through a Canal.
Will never ever happen, much better options.
USNAVY SHIPS UTILIZES HSRBOR TUGS WHEN TRANSITTING THE RIVER CHANNEL OR HARBOR WHENEVER THEY WILL ENCOUNTER BRIGES !
Harbours & closer to any structure.
Amen I've been saying that since it happened these f****** people try to save money and didn't have no tugboats out there this wouldn't have happened had they been doing their f****** job but of course people Jack probably wanted to save money on tugboats if it's anybody's fault it's the people who run the harbor
At 8.5 knots, the tugs cannot hold a ship this size. In the Suez canal tugs follow the ships but they are more there to be ready to pull ships off if they beach in the canal. The energy of a ship that size at 8.5 knots is simply not possible for tugs to hold.
What's upsetting is that the 6 workers weren't also told to evacuate the bridge as the traffic was being stopped on both sides.. smfh!
I was thinking the same thing
I hope the investigation includes why the workmen weren’t pulled off the bridge and what in the future can be done for better communication!
They were working, they can’t just take a break whenever. I think their bosses should be fired.
Best,

I would think there wasn't time. It happened pretty quickly and these men were on foot....so very tragic
They probably didn't dn't understand English. So didn't understand what was happening.
There wasn't enough time. I believe once the ship was reaching a higher speed, that's when it began it's malfunctions. Honestly that's when they should have sent out a warning but they probably didn't think they were going to hit the bridge at that point. It wasn't until they were closer when they realized what was actually going to happen. Plus I'd imagine since most of the men were from foreign countries, their main language probably wasn't English. Everyone did the best they could in the split seconds they had. I'm just glad this didn't happen during morning & evening rush hours because the loss would have been even greater.
@@kellis6241 Traffic was stopped on the bridge as soon as the ship stated they were having trouble. Somebody from city transportation surly knew workmen were on the bridge. There should have been a way to contact the crew in emergencies

I appreciate the detailed coverage here. Well done. I am impressed that such coverage has reached us on YT so quickly and with so much detail. It’s tragic that lives were lost, beyond words really. It’s very impressive that lives were also saved through the actions of the crew, pilots, and those who stopped traffic. Nothing can bring back the dead. It’s an extremely good thing that the number isn’t higher. Yet like all tragedies, it’s beyond terrible that it was even a single life, let alone 6. (Or whatever the final tally is).
It should not go without mentioning that safety is all of our responsibility. Every time a corner is cut, or we ask others to cut them, lives are risked. How many people stop to consider what the market forces they project cause in the wider world. What support we provide for those whose greed has matched our own ignorance of what corners are cut to provide us with what we want.
Great job of the Captain for alerting authorities so quickly 👏🏻
This should not have happened tug boats should be used until the ship is safely out at sea or past any any infrastructure such as docks or bridges crossing waterways. Why wasn't the ship in mid channel well and truly before it got to the Bridge area.

The cause of the bridge collapse? Maybe it had something to do with a huge ship colliding with it?
😂😂😂
That is the final cause, but we are asking what is the first event in the chain of events that caused the collision. It is the "but for" question."
@thomasallen6285 Well, the ship malfunctioned, causing it to collide with the bridge. The bridge was fine prior.
@thomasallen6285 There is no conspiracy or underlying cause. A ship hit the bridge, the bridge collapsed.
Exactly what I said. Big freakin boat, there's your cause. I thought we all knew that already.
This one will probably make it to the mayday shows after the ntsb finishes their investigation. RIP to the workers so many of us are praying for the families
The bridge collapsed instantly, I really question the engineering of it. The architect or engineers should be sued
That pier was hit with a little over a 1 million pounds of force. The bridge was over 40 years old no way that pier would with stand that type of blow
Really the only question is why it lost power initially. Everything else can be explained. Someone gave an astern command upon emergency power, the bow heads to starboard. Port anchor is ordered dropped, it dragged but did not offer much resistance.
What happened to the original power source?
One theory i heard was contaninated fuel.
@@SorbusAucubaria these engines typically run on bunker oil. Almost crude oil. It will interesting to see what could contaminate that..
@@markstevens1729 they use different fuel in and near the port. the most advanced contamination theory is that this fuel contains plastics particles because that's the cheapest and legally allowed way for raffineries to dispose plastics, and the sulphur content used to dissolve the plastics, but since a couple of yeas ago they have to cut out the sulphur in the near-port-fuel, and now ships get more engine failures due to the plastics
Australia flagged this company over 18 months ago, banned several of their ships to enter our waters and now subject to very thorough inspections every time that particular company's ship's enter our waters.
My uncle is a ship captain of similar ships and he told me a story once that he hated this one fuel company because one time, their ships were accidentally loaded with contaminated fuel then he proceeded to tell me that engine parts of such ships are gigantic. From this story I assumed that fuel contamination is rare but not very rare. It's unfortunate but it the timing from this accident was just terrible.
They've been talking about installing buffer barriers ("Dolphins") on those two channel side piers for a couple decades now. Everyone knew this was a matter of when, not if...
PS - The fuel companies have been disposing of their refinery waste--plastics and waxes that are byproducts--by putting it in the high sulfur, "Bunker fuel" that these ships run on (think the thickest, nastiest diesel fuel there is).
It's been gumming up engines and causing these loss of power events for quite some time. This time it happened in an area with little room for error, as opposed to the open sea.
Key Bridge collapse
To build a bridge with a structure to withstand a collision with a giant container ship is prohibitively expensive if not impossible, but to build the barriers around the piles to act as the deflective shields is very affordable and effective.
Redundant security: for the exposed ports where buildings are too close to the shores, arrestor gears like those of the carriers can be placed to catch the anchors of the runaway ships in cases of emergency.
Wow I didn’t even notice there was background music playing the entire video until reading a comment about someone complaining about it. Now I can’t un hear it 😂

When they just mentioned possible contaminated fuel a light just went off in my head I work for a trucking company in mass and this whole month we’ve been having trouble with a lot of trucks running crappy and blowing smoke and our mechanics think it’s bad fuel and we go through Alot every week, this is something they should look into we are on the eastern seaboard too would probably be using the same batches as Maryland….??????
Why would they only drop the port anchor, causing it to turn straight into the structure instead of dropping both anchors. They are supposed to man those anchors as they come through the port, in case of an emergency.
My question is why where were those tugs those could have helped during maneuvering for lose of steering
If you notice, none of this newscasters or government people have mentioned not using tugboats was the reason the boat hit the bridge because that will ask why why did it not have tugboat?
My condolences to the families of the workers. But it's an unbelievable miracle that only 6 people died. I know there are victims but if we imagine what else could happen ...it was a huge collapse of a long bridge
In terms of the dead, it could’ve been easily as bad as (if not worse) than the Minneapolis bridge collapse in 2007 had this happened in the middle of the day with high volumes of traffic.
So apparently ships have problems with watered down or contaminated from plastic fuel all the time from people in the comments that have experience in that industry. If it causes them to shut down then why don’t they escort them through key infrastructure with tugs and push boats, that’s what they’re there for.
Whose brilliant idea voted against that to get more ship traffic for cheaper shipping rates?
In some country at every bus stop in front there is a stone stopper to prevent vehicle accidentally barge in. Very surprised Baltimore Key Bridge do not have a stone stopper in front of the tripod pillar that hold the bridge.
a whole year to wait for a report is wild

Why wouldn't they have tugboats escort until past the bridge? Should always be standard safety protocol? You would think?
The only news channel that provided clear details abt the vessel instead of just saying "Spore-registered vessel" that is so misleading.

What a great time to own a ferry boat in Baltimore

Incompetence ! Learned nothing from Tampa Bay collapse !
Please to see and listen to someone in the position of authority - like this Lady - to be FAIR. I have the feeling that individuals like her could deliver TRUE, FAIR and HONEST conclusion.
It was the ship
Obviously
always had a bad feeling about this bridge and would drive 30 miles or 30 minutes out of my way to avoid it. this boat is one of the smaller, if not smallest ships, that enter and exit the port, most are ginormous
Why would you drive 30minutes to avoid the key bridge? You have 895 and 95 both running parallel to the key bridge. Neither would take 30minutes longer. My commute to work is over the keybridge or 896. They both take the same amount of time. It definitely wouldn't be an extra half hour just to cut through light street and hit eastern through the city to put you back on 695.
Unless you're new to the city, I can't phathom why someone would circle to entire city to avoid 695/keybridge. That's silly. Lots of parallel ground level/tunnel options to avoid the bridge and get in/out of the city.
Now ships can't get in or out of that port for months or even up to a year until the scene is cleared That's crazy and not to mention all that traffic that's going to be backed up because of the detour.
it wont take a year to clear it probably will be open in two months to ships building a new bridge could take years. They may have to do a temporary ferry service to make up for delays in traffic who knows.

@ziggy so in 90 seconds, cops closed the bridge? 😂😂😂 You're a clown
listen to the lady and the time line given, there barely wasn't any
don't understand why there isn't such a safety in place for these situations.. loss of control of vessel.. then the anchor's should automatically deploy to stop the vessel in its tracks
What I'm trying to figure out is why a ship that size doesn't have tugs assisting it until it pass the bridge? I don't get it.
Looking at the smoke direction from the stack, the wind blew it off course while restricted in it's ability to maneuver.
The sides of the container pile make a big sail
There is also an intersection in the narrow main channel she was following with the Curtis Bay channel on the starboard side right after she lost power. Hydrodynamic forces from displacing water from the channel puts a force on either side of the hull and those forces would of been relieved on the starboard side when she intersected that side channel. There would have been a force to starboard side crossing that intersection.
Yeah right, containers make great sails, that's all current and speed already reached,do you know what that ship weighs! could have saved a bit of fuel by using containers as sails too, you've no idea
Why didnt the mayday get to the construction workers?
There was no emergency communication with the workers on the bridge. Incompetent, criminal contractor.

I hope the shipping company has to pay the bill. Probably 1 billion.

1 billion? cheap.
More than that because of all the disrupted business that happens as a result...but there's also possibilities that someone else dropped the ball. Thinking security. Also the management company will wind up making an insurance claim which will ultimately go on the balance sheet of some big bank the tax payer will just wind up bailing out later anyways. How many cars or trucks were still on the bridge in addition to the workers?
Don't understand why there aren't bumpers around the supports for the bridge. Seems like they would have learned from the Sunshine Bridge in Tampa when that happened. But I guess the NTSB didn't get around to it. Might have been a better outcome if it had.
The thing is the cintainer ship is so big that i dont think any kind of bridge would have stopped it. Or the bridge structures would have to be so massive that it would make the channel unpassable.
It looks like there might be fenders, but they are very small and quite far away from the support piers.
They did an assessment whether to retrofit this bridge according to the new standards, but they assessed it was not worth the cost
@@eljanrimsa5843 I guess not if now they are getting a new free bridge.

2:19 - Was this ship's dock near the I-895 Harbor Tunnel?
Why were there no TUGS ?
there were tugs, they brought the ship to the middle of the channel and the tugs were released. Tugs are not required in the channel.
The “mercy of the tides” steered them right into the support leg of the bridge…..
bS
Sure yeh
Right. Notice that super sharp turn they made to make sure they hit the pillar? I'm not buying this. I think you know who has this whole thing set up.
I'm not buying this either. The power went out but if you notice it was at the same time the smoke poured out of the stack ( engines with no power do not make smoke) as the power went out and came back on they noticed it was possible to miss the bridge and the power went back out making it harder to see. It appears to me that the shop turned into the bridge at the last minute. Watch it close. Right now in the government and things all running scams and lies to the people so you never know. It will be interesting to see where the money ends up at the end. That would tell a lot wouldn't it? Even the recording box went out at the right time. I'm grateful for the lives that were saved and very sorry for the ones lost. It just seems with the information given there was plenty of time to have saved all lives. When the anchor was dropped they knew what was going to happen
The wind also pushed them. See the smoke coming out of the stack blowing almost horizontally to the left of the image? Coincidentally that’s also the direction the boat was pushed. Wind pushing a boat is extremely common when it’s not under its own power and with how large this was, it’s practically its own sail
How deep is that waterway
Good explanation on what the NTSB is and how they are conducting the investigation.
And to think there's a guy who posted a video on tik tok who appears to be posting a doctored video of the point of impact for the ship. He points to what appears to be explosions at certain points of the bridge, stating that these were explosions caused by dynamite. To take a tragedy and turn it around to fit your narrative is nothing short of "Sickening"! You cant make this stuff up!

thank god it happened late at night and not during the day when there would have been more people on it. Amazing that the only people on it at the time was a handful of workers that bridge used to get some heavy traffic sometimes
I don't get how there are no mandatory towing ships guiding out large vessels past a vulnerable infrastructure like that and how there was no sufficient guiding structures and/or submerged rock ballast around the pillars to protect them. I've read they installed the harbor cranes to receive large container vessels like this one only recently but forgot to adapt the infrastructure to safely receive them. There was nothing able to prevent an accident like this. That is baffling. Ships are complex machines and do get out of control from time to time. So decision and policy makers of the port shouldn't get off easily by scapegoating an operator imo.
New details the same as the old details. A cargo ship lost power, ran into a support which caused the bridge to collapse.
Because of this get ready for things to cost more.
They already got their que cards. They were spouting that yesterday

Wasn't there tug boats guiding the ship through the tight spots just in case of fog or mechanical issues?
Did I hear correct, that the ship was doing 8 to 9 knots? Seems fast in a channel navigating through a bridge with tonnes of weight on board.?
Without any velocity you don't have any rudder authority so it's a double edge sword.
That’s just at steerage speed for them
I’m curious to know if the ship used their horn to warn the people on the bridge to warn them
No, they used the radio to do so.
Is that going to change anything. You're not going to be able to sleep for nights after night because you can't find out if they blow the f****** horn really
Beep beep!!! 😳😳😳
even if they heard a horn and saw the ship - what was their reaction?
Time was short to restores black out ,emergency generators start after 10 seconds was to late to do Sam thing in engine room.
I understand it would be nearly impossible to create any type of barriers that could stop a ship of this size. Maybe the next best option would be to engineer bridges to break off in small sections if something like this happens.
I dont know anything about container ships but does this look overloaded to anyone else - it looks top heavy 🤔

Oh my dear god😢😢
With risk assessments being mandatory requirement
Unfortunately tug not connected at stern position, till ship sails past position of worst damage in case of machinery failure. At the least 1 tug escort till ship cleared bridge. Not many ship movements at that time.
They did try to throw the anchor out maybe the anchor caught and swing it into the pillow of the bridge 😞
That could've been prevented if tugged boats got there in time to change the course of the ship
THE TUGS WHICH HELPED TO LEAVE THE PORT COULD HAVE STAYED WITH THE SHIPS PASSAGE UNDER THE BRIDGE.
And rock islands built around the piers to keep boats from coming near it

There were so many CRM taken as well as Refresher!! Don't Trust Indian Seafarers!! They are Good in Theory. They write a lot of Maritime books!! Only write!! Let them to do it!! Watch their gestures & you will know!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@kdub3892well you seem quite certain it's CIA. Without any evidence
Also, you’re trying WAY too hard to convince us that this is an accident. It’s too soon to know that.
I never understood why it isn't required to have cement guides to stop this so the cargo ships glide between the cement guides. From the port leading out to any bridge
They are making cargo ships too large. No bridge could withstand a collision from a ship of that tonage.
im curious how this will change the protocol for stuff i imagine they are gonna require tugs to escort them beyond any bridge now. Tug boys bout to be rich.
Aren't there regulations that require a ship to maintain it's distance from the pillars before entering a bridge? This vessel had a crapload of space on the other side to have cleared the structure.
Yes but the ship lost power.
@@abelincoln6785 I ccan see how if the ship lost power, they might not have had any control over the sterring and navigation...and then when it recovered, it pitched the ship to the right.
But that ship should have been far enough away from the support column long before it became disabled.
Pay attention….
The ship lost power…
and there’s wind and/or current
@@farmasyst The ship was in the normal shipping channel going 8 knots, but had lost power a couple of minutes earlier and was drifting out of the shipping channel towards the bridge without ability to steer. If you look at the ship now, you can see the concrete dolphin right next to ship, that would have prevented a direct hit if the ship would have moved straight on. One theory had been that they tried to go astern and that increased the steering problem. But most likely is that they restarted an emergency generator but not the main engine yet, and never recovered the ability to steer.
The real question to be asking is why that Port Authority allowed their tugboats to leave a ship before its safe exit and why the tugboats failed to return after being radioed by the ship captain to return because of engine failure.
the real question to ask is why are you commenting when you clearly have no idea how harbours operate, nor have you understood the timeline mentioned in the video, did you actually watch it?
Best video on this tragedy yet this woman is smart
They need to vet whoever they have trying to sign language for what they are saying. That guy doesn't come close to interpreting what is being verbally said.
Yea synergy the shipping company better be paying for a new dam bridge. Not us marylanders.
FACT CHECK!!! The inertia of that size vessel would have prevented the ship from turning without power... The turn came only AFTER the engine was restarted. At that point the rudder was placed at HARD STARBOARD. Who moved the rudder? Synergy runs a fleet of 744 ships, with about 20% classisfied as "smartships" which have autonimous capability. Was the system actually under the control of the crew?
ummmm...you know nothing about large ships, do you?
If you had of done any prior knowledge learning of the incident before your comment, you would have known that the main engine died, (as there is only 1 main engine in most of these large ships that control everything, propulsion as well as electrics) so this vessel had absolutely very little steering without propulsion. The turn to starboard happened because the ship dropped its anchor in the hopes that it would spin around and stop before hitting bridge. The lights that came back on were from the emergency auxiliary motor, which only supplies electrics for lights etc, not propulsion.
Or, or, maybe the 30 mph wind blowing against it affected it?
@@grandinosour More than you assume.
I think a tunnel under the water would be a better option moving forward for this location and perhaps for other bridges in these conditions.
Tampa Bay SKYWAY Bridge has defensive dolphin concrete blockers,,,, the two on this Baltimore bridge are constructed in the WRONG positions for blocking the support legs.
God bless the all Indian crew.
Some one didn't do their job right no need for those people have to die for some one else's mistakes God bless their soul's may they rest in peace
Maybe it was the prop walk caused the stern to move port side, of course the bow would move to starboard side accordingly. While propeller was in full reverse (judging by the amount of engine smoke), the rudder was much less effective in steering the ship, despite the ship was having emergence/regular power minutes before the collision. Sounds like pilots or operators' error when they were under great stress to regain directional control.
Like Boeing events, Great to see authority can quickly publish pictures of the all power related equipment that might have fails the vessel too.
Maybe there are other vessels having same dangerous parts. Time to recall or do quality checks
