RUDELY WOKEN BY LOCALS In A STORMY Peak District (UK Van Life)

  • We're nervously experiencing some more of Van Life in the UK this week, as we head to the Peak District to a place described as a Van Life Mecca!
    But it doesn't all go to plan when we we are rudely woken by locals in the middle of the night, and the stormy weather starts to leak through the roof and INTO our cupboards!!!
    Plus Ric gets a bit of road rage and asks a VERY controversial question. Who's ready for the comments on this one? 😂

    without being harsh the speed of how quick the dog learns to heel is down to how much effort YOU put in. theres no such thing as a bad dog, just bad dog owners. its up to you folks

    A tip from someone who's handled Alsatians and Great Pyrenees I would recommend throwing the collar (as it chokes the dog) in the bin and get a harness with a dog that pulls use both hand with the lead running across you that way you can use both hands to stop the pull, don't yank the dog give firm voice commands and reward with a treat when it does something right.

    As soon as Rosie pulls, you turn around and walk the other way and if you can, stop to give her a treat when she's at your heel. Walk off, she pulls again, you turn around and walk the other way again... etc etc. she gets a wee treat each time she's at your heel. works really well and doesn't actually take that long to get her in the swing of walking beside you. She's so gorgeous!!! I'd love a wee rosie too. 🥰

      Top advice.. I have two rottweilers and this is what I did with them. You are leader, so you lead. If they pull to go somewhere, you turn the other way round and keep doing it until they become discombobulated, and then they will start to follow lead. ❤❤❤

    We have a 40kg golden retriever, terrible for pulling on the lead. We got a harness where you clip the lead at his chest so if he pulls on the lead it just turns him around. The difference is incredible, so easy to walk him now x

    Temporary fix for a leaky roof is a disposable nappy taped up there, if the burners going it dries it out for next time/until you do a proper job.

I live 15 mins away from Cromford and believe it or not I have never walked around the place. I assume you're now abroad, not got to that bit yet. Enjoy

    If you want to look around a cotton mill properly, try Styal Mill/ Quarry Bank Mill which is owned by the National Trust and is definitely worth a visit.

    We have a lurcher so can only use a harness, it has attachments for the back and the front (chest) of the dog. I used to just attach on the back ring and have a long lead so he could have a bit of freedom. My wife uses a lead with a attachment at both ends so clips on the back and the front (chest) of the harness and he walks sooo much better with her I’ve changed to my wifes way. The dog will learn pretty quickly if he trys to pull with a lead on the front of the harness it just turns him around so stops pulling real quick.

    Re your ceiling leaks I've got a thin fibre glass roof and I've found butl tape to be fantastic no leaks in five years. It's got plenty of give so you put a thick 8mm bead in the gap between roof and cable gland screw it down and squeeze it up to 4 or 5mm then seal over the top with sicaflex 521. The 521 just stops the butl getting washed away. It basically the same as window putty and lasts for a very long time and copes with heat/ cold expansion/ contraction. Its what people use on fibreglass RV roofs and well worth doing.

    Get a Halti for the dog I guarantee it will stop pulling within 2 to 3 hrs use maybe even sooner. Our dogs have them and they stopped pulling almost instantly. It loops around the nose and clips back onto the main collar for safety incase it comes off so you still have the dog on the collar.
    They are brilliant.

      I have a harness like that, mekuti brand, the lead attached to the normal location is the main one, with the one that goes around the lower neck used to provide a 'pulse' to bring the dogs attention back to you
      Only downside is that you really need to use 2 hands to signal clearly ... I use it as one of my dogs feels threatened by cars / vans / motorbikes (anything that growls) and tries to attack them, so getting her attention so she knows a treat is available is usually enough ...

    For our springer spaniel, we used a halti head harness, chest harness, elasticated leads and neither worked. A friend told me about the "figure 8 rope" leads that go over the nose, bought one and I could walk him on my little finger, honestly I couldn't believe the transformation. Best £8 I'd spent.
    Keep up the great work, love the channel!

    So the dog that is a little bit of work you have to put in there to make him hiel, just praktice with traits , put him in front of you let him sit, lay down, then hiel and treat then follow and sit and treat, repeat again and again. So she learns the comand quickly. you can bring the pulling down with a harnas for the dog were de lash is in the middel of it so not around here neck. Better to correct when you walk and better for the dog. Wishing u s6 and have a great week

    I've not had much success training dogs not to pull. The standard method is to change direction every time they pull (usually with a command like heal or come) - but with a spaniel you may get bored before she does!
    I've tried using a harness that pulled down when the dog pulled, but that made their armpits red. I've tried a halti that looks like a muzzle and pulls their head round ... though that only had the right effect a few times before they twisted their neck to stop it working. The dog also kept trying to walk on 3 legs so they could try to pull it off with the other leg!
    There's 8 years between my daughter and son, they got on really well for a few years and do again, but not so much for a couple of years in the middle. There was also a lot that changes in terms of parenting advice in 8 years! I guess having Jack & Teddy would counteract these issues ... though I'm not sure if you have space for a 4th seat in the back of the cab ...
    I would recommend getting a harness for your lovely dog (whose name temporarily escapes me, sorry!) so if you have to stop suddenly, her weight held by a larger area and not just her neck. I think you have her lead round one of the seat bases already, but if not, having a lead secured (you can leave it attached to the truck ready for use) is a good idea, especially if one of us bad British drivers gets in Ric's way!
    Thanks for a great vlog, lovely to see you all have fun in spite of the weather!

    Clean Up The World events will be held on the 3rd weekend in September. If there is not an organised event where you are on that weekend you can register as a family to take part
    Activities can be family only or open to others to help with the litter clean up .
    The theme for 2024 is plastic pollution.
    The event was started by round the world yachtsman Ian Kiernan in 1989 when he returned to Australia.
    You might like to pick up some litter analyse what you find then have a BBQ with other van lifers
    To finish you could plant a tree or trees as trees are the lungs of the earth

      That's not 100% reliable.
      I was in Shepton Mallet a couple of years ago following a row of cars passing a single parked car. Coming the other way was a dustcart whose driver had obviously seen this before, he slowed to about 5mph & covered his face (presumably in case of flying glass). I stopped as you suggest but the entire queue in front of me chose the challenge, the last 2 cars nearly flipped over as they dodged round the lorry. Wheels left the ground.

    The worst driving I have EVER encountered is in Thailand. I have lived there on and off for many years and driven all over that beautiful, large country. But the driving is appalling. I have noticed the standard of driving dropping in England since around 2000. I have no idea why that would be.

    Motorway junctions at peak times are the worst in the UK, nothing wrong with the roads its the drivers, people don't get into lane early enough and don't give way for the incoming traffic on the other side so it all becomes start stop carnage.

  • @Jetske
    @Jetske Місяць тому

    Yes, about Moroccon traffic! Less rules, more people participating in the less rules policy (mostly, it's what they're used to). But even though everyone starts driving at the same time, in the end they give space and it all turns out wonderfully well!!! But Italians, feel they are the bosses of the roads and feel other drivers shouldn't be there (sorry Italians.... I love you but in general, driving in your country is a challenge)........

    Totally agree, Italy is bad for driving and the further south you go, the worse it gets. Although it is more a case of ignorance , arrogance and lack of respect. But the rest of Europe is catching up as well.

    Don’t think it’s the UK drivers they were probably saying look at this idiot a small road with a bloody big wagon, and, we take our caravan to France and have no problem because the roads are so much better than ours

      Oh dear.
      If there was a restriction on the road it would be clearly signed at every junction.
      If there is no restriction there is no restriction, all vehicles are allowed & should be expected.

    Before you call other drivers you should look at your self, the road in Buxton where you had a rant has a 7.5 wieght limit with access only this dos"nt mean it"s a short cut for you, also the winnets pass is 7.5 restriction, just saying

    • @alanhat5252
      @alanhat5252 2 місяці тому

      A limit is a limit, it's not a ban on anything that fits the limit. Do you *_ever_* drive at 30mph where 30mph is the limit?

    • @alanhat5252
      @alanhat5252 2 місяці тому

      Google Streetview shows Winnats Pass has a maximum for *_goods_* vehicles of 7.5t except for access.
      The sign bears a glyph of a goods vehicle so it only relates to *__goods__* vehicles, as is clear from the Highway Code. Any *_goods_* vehicle less than 7.5000001 tonnes mgw is allowed up there & if the driver can cite "access" (eg _accessing_ the viewpoint) there is no limit for *_goods_* vehicles.
      No weight limit is signed for other vehicles.

    • @alanhat5252
      @alanhat5252 2 місяці тому

      Could you supply the name of "the road in Buxton" so we can check for ourselves?
      If you mean the road they turn into at 11:59 there is no limit shown.

    • @user-pn1pg5re7s
      @user-pn1pg5re7s 2 місяці тому

      The road in question is the Dukes drive, it dose"nt show the sign on the video but is clear on google street view. except for access only allows you if you are visiting a place within the restriction for deliveries etc. As for Winnets pass ive seen many failed attempts in smaller campers and cars,i think the city of london has different exemptions for 7.5t

    • @alanhat5252
      @alanhat5252 2 місяці тому

      @@user-pn1pg5re7sthanks for providing the road name but again the sign bears a *_goods_* vehicles glyph so _only_ applies to _goods_ vehicles not to motorhomes. If the restriction applied to all vehicles there would be no glyph, as is abundantly clear reading through the signs in the Highway Code.
      Regardless of the vehicle classification this vehicle is below the indicated weight limit so would not be impacted by the restriction anyway.
