The Greek verb kerdaino in this passage is best translated into modern English simply as 'gain'. It has nothing to do with winning a prize or winning anything else.
The idea is that Paul wants to gain people into the community of those who are saved.

To win something is the exact same thing as gaining something in this instance. To win someone to Christ in this instance would be the exact same thing as winning a battle against the enemy, or in Christ words, loosing the prisoners of war. Be careful of vain and unprofitable words. You have both said the same thing yet you act as though he has said some blasphemous thing. He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 1 Timothy 6:4

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18

      @@xavierthomas5835 A few points:
Firstly, I never suggested that this was an especially important point. I was just making a relatively minor point about the meaning of a certain word.
Secondly, I certainly never suggested that John Piper said something blasphemous. That is an absurd thing to say. In most of this video, he used the word 'gain', which is a good translation of kerdaino. However, near the beginning he said that the word meant winning a prize, which isn't quite what the word means.
I think Piper's teaching in this video is very good. I was just differing slightly on one point.
Thirdly, accuracy in biblical exegesis is important. And accuracy requires close analysis of the meanings of words. 1 Tim 6:4 doesn't mean that there is no place for discussion about the precise meanings of words.
Finally, I think maybe I should have said in my original comment that I was just making a minor point and that overall I liked the teaching. Maybe that would have been better.

@@maxaplin4204 honestly, I apologize if I was offensive in the way I spoke. It sounded ti me as though you flat out denied he had said anything correct at all. My apologies. Also there is always a place for the meaning of words to be important. Sometimes l, however, find them to He little more than a snare in the Spirit of God to give meaning to what us said in its own way. One verse can mean many things, even things already said in the Bible, as long as you're willing to let the meaning be fluid rather than singular. For instance, And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: 1 Peter 1:17, passing the time of our apjourning in fear can mean only being in fear of God and not allowing yourself to be distracted. However it can also mean giving dillidenge to remember where it is you've come from and where it is you're going. It applies to my position in one sense and my life in another. How I walk and towards what do I walk. That's how I've been taught of God to see not only the word of God, but the way people talk also, and many colloquialisms used freely among men.

      @@xavierthomas5835 No problem.
To be fair, I do think I worded things poorly myself. I should have started by saying that I thought his teaching was very good and that I wanted to make a very minor point about the meaning of one word.
You are right that we need not only to say what is right but also to say it in the right way.

He is making to big a deal of winning. Wining is changing peoples wrong math thinking fo right math thinking so they stop getting their math wrong, metaphorically speaking so you can understand.

Hearing how gross and disgusting the Bible is as an adult is shocking and disheartening. Self-servingly self-righteously "soul winning" turns off absolutely everybody and you're not fooling God acting that way.

It’s dumb if you’re a Calvinist who believes in predestination and you think you should share the gospel. You think God has already chosen so just sit on your couch and eat popcorn.

Brother, please try to accurately represent the viewpoint of others you disagree with. When you reduce someone's viewpoint down to something they don't even believe, it's not honoring to them nor to yourself.
