Great to you see you step up your game pal . The timelapse on the bench and split screen is a great touch . .... pretty hot pickups in this baby .... I've never owned a an Explorer ... Yet !
Once you factor in the cost of a Gibson case 229+1,399(2020B2)=1,628. As a 2020 Explorer is 1,699. I guess it's just a matter of Black for 1,628 , Alpine White for 1,999 or Natural at 1,699? But yes, I do in fact agree with you that the case should be included.
The 1990 version of this guitar with the same colour but in a gloss finish and pick guard came with the brown / pink lined case ,and cost around £1000.00 back in 1990. No case for an explorer? ,I'd rather pay a bit more and get a case with it.
I like that it has the traditional routing. I'd move the selector switch to the traditional space, slide the tone knob up behind the volume knob, and put a kill switch in where the tone knob used to sit (the Bucket Head style)
The only Gibson that looks good with dot inlays IMO. I'm glad they put a mop logo on it, back in the 80s it was usually a gold silkscreen logo, but they also had ebony boards: at least my 85 did.
Nice, but once you start talking only a little more money for the Upgrade/Antique Natural finish and it's an easy choice, especially since it comes with a real case (and the multi-tool). I mean if you're already at $1400 what's another $300? Also, while your correct about the gold silkscreen logo and lowering the price to $999, is it possible Gibson isn't interested in that strategy? The marketing strategy with the $1400 price might be to keep some of the "Gibson" exclusivity brand. Maybe, who knows. That pearl headstock logo is a lot more noticeable/striking and easier to see from a distance than the gold silkscreen. Still a pretty nice guitar, however those pickups are too hot for my preference. Great review, thank you.
I’d wanna see a side by side comparison between the Gibson Tribute Explorer and the Epiphone ‘58 Goth or the ‘84 EX to see if it’s worth paying more for the Gibson
Like everyone has commented- at under 1000 they would sell many...but they don't make Gibson Explorers and Vs at that price point. They do make some nice Epiphone though at well below that price. Thank you for doing a review of this model - most of us would know little about this particular model if you didn't.
So I just bought one of these and it looks, feels, and sounds better than my 2018 Explorer (the Antique Natural finish Standard). All I did to it was put a white pickguard on it because the all-black look with a medium color rosewood fretboard was a bit off. The Dirty Fingers+ pickups sound awesome!
So what I've done, and I would probably recommend- I've bought it from Demo shop for less than 900€ and sent it to be repainted. The Gibson MOP logo is a premium feature IMHO and it looks amazing, and the modding potential is absolutely great. I'm still waiting for mine to be done, but overall, if you find it for under a grand used, go for it, it's great at this price point.
Not a bad rig. I don’t see how 1499 is a bad price. Considering nice imports are fetching 1000-1200. It’s got killer pickups and a rout to mod it for the toggle switch. Giving you another option for a 3rd knob. Slap a cool aftermarket pickguard on it (chrome or white maybe) and you’ve got a cool looking guitar. I don’t think I’d buy it over my Schecter E1-FRS. But it’s not a bad price for a Gibson. 1299 probably would’ve been the sweet spot though. Thanks

Looks EXACTLY like mi Epi Goth Explorer. The finish, the neck, the fretboard, hardware, everything. If it wasn´t for the Gibson logo, you couldn´t tell. It doesn´t feel cheap at all. The fretboard is particularly well done; it looks a lot like yours. The only thing I hate is the lack of inlays. The sound? the stock pups (57 classics) sound like a Gibson pup should sound. I plan to upgrade to SD Distortion, but just because I want that sound. Great cleans, distorted is amazing, as it should be. Plays really good Jazz, Blues, Rock and Metal, of course I was watching your video review, and thinking...Why would I buy this one for 1300, if my Epi plays and sounds every bit as good..for around 300? ( I got mine second hand) What´s in it that blows away my Epi?
Could you be able to start a series where you compare different guitars at different price points? Like say you compare a Gibson VS Epiphone version of a guitar, or a Fender VS Squier version of a guitar. I know a lot of other UA-camrs do this, but I think you could do it better, seeing you come in contact with a lot of guitars.
If the question has to present itself whether or not you have to choose between saving a few clams and getting all of the onboard amenities you want (specifically putting the toggle switch were it traditionally goes and having both volume controls), it becomes clear you should only get this particular version of the Explorer if you just want the Gibson name and the body shape. Makes me thankful that the Explorer I owned for less than half a decade was the Epiphone version being produced in 2018. Sure it was an outsource production, might not have included the best quality materials and didn’t say Gibson on it, but it did what I wanted it to while I kept it. Chances are pretty strong, if I had to have another one that I would again go with Epiphone.
I prefer the tribute models The necks are far more comfortable The times I bought higher end Gibsons ('79 natural LP standard, and a 2018 SG HP-II), the necks felt like crap.
Dunno if it's the light, but after conditioning the fretboard it looked so much better, never would have guessed rosewood. I can't stand Explorers with that lighter colour Granadillo..
I got one of these cheap and its pretty clear to me its all the same guitar as the higher models, Ive not missed out on anything, thanks for the review
I honestly do like this one, but then again, the profit is going to Gibson and are they really using it for good nowadays? I hope they have a better future by returning to their roots honestly

Technically, a satin finish is right between a gloss and a matte finish. I would say to me it looks like a satin finish, but I have a Gibson SG Special that is supposed to be satin and I would say it's more like a semi-gloss, which is in between a satin and a gloss. It's also a bummer that they used those crappy gig bags as opposed to the nicer ones they have been using lately- but I suppose it won't fit something like an Explorer.
Here's what I thought when I saw this model in '19. I didn't think it was worth getting a Gibson Explorer without the individual volume controls. It would have been about the Gibson name and Explorer body shape. The chambering being what it was, I might've tried to get one if I thought I could mod it. Call it picky taste, but Gibson only says one volume and one tone if it's going to be something like the Firebird I. Two pickups (and that shape), I need to have two volumes.
I'm a lefty, I own one of these....came with issues, right out of the bag. Same with the matching flying v....which i sold. To be honest, I'm still gratful to have one though, haha.
I had a faded series explorer. Mine came with a black hard case with a white interior and they sold for 999.00 USD new. Evey time I opened that case it took my breath away. Guitar Center in Tallahassee were clearing the series out and I got mine for 499 with the case.
A bit pricey for what it is. Man give me the chance to go back and buy one of those government series Explorers new, cheaper and cooler IMO. Where's a time machine when you need one.
I got a Schecter E1-FRS in purple quilt. Stainless frets, real mother of Pearl inlays, ebony board, carbon fiber dual truss, carbon fiber binding, Floyd Rose 1500. An amazing guitar. I have some very nice custom shop Gibson’s (No explorers though). And that Schecter E1 is the fastest, smoothest playing guitar in my collection. Absolutely beast. And cheaper than this bare bones Explorer trogly is showing here. If you can find an E1-FRS under a grand, get it. I love my Gibson’s and ESP’s. But that Schecter is a special guitar. Especially for the money. 👊🏻
@@xiongharry44 most people are not Gibson fans until they get the right one. But they are awesome guitars. There are no guitars I don’t like. I’m an equal opportunity guitarist 🤘🏻
I realize my opinion is rather jaded for a couple of reasons, 1) Due to raising my kids and not having the money to ever afford a brand new guitar and 2) My ideal guitar that I judge all others by, but should stop doing, is the Gibson Les Paul. OK with that disclaimer in place, lol, I do not like this guitar but I like this guitar!! LOL, I have to say when you first opened the gig bag my heart sank a bit, "Ugh another cheap looking guitar" was my thought!! See, I watch hoping to see some gorgeous guitar, preferably a Les Paul, so my viewing is jaded lol. I have to say though, when I saw the guitar strapped over your shoulder it looked much better, very cool and very Explorer like, while on the table and the bench it looked small and cheap for some reason. I don't get into the whole metal look, I think it's a dumb look by guys who play music that they can't make much money at so they cannot afford nice instruments, again IMO. I actually like the all black look and we know why Gibson used the mother of pearl name plate - so that people could see who makes this guitar!! a silkscreen would not stand out against that black back ground! So just as I was about to like this guitar you dropped the price bomb on us, ugh $1400!!?? No friggin way! Sorry Gibson but you don't have enough time or equipment invested to warrant that price tag!! You can buy a Gibson Les Paul Studio for that price!! I saw your asking price Austin and that is a fair price for such an instrument.
It needs a ebony fretboard. It looks like it's wearing brown shoes with a black tux.
An ebony fretboard AND a binding. At that price it would be quite more of a bargain.
Or a brown shirt under a black coat
White nuts where there should be black must be banned.
@@CKC411 Or at the very least some real good conditioning to drastically darken it. But I agree, ebony would have been ideal.
@@CKC411 frets can't be black becaue the paint would wear from tre frets after mild usage already.
Not putting an ebony fretboard on this model was an epic fail on Gibsons part.
Agree, even Richlite would ave looked better.
At least put in a richlite fretboard it looks good enough
You could hit it with a woodstain though. I've found a used one that I'd like to completely pick apart and upgrade visually
Disagree. That rosewood has a distinct feel to the fingers. Ebony would just be a nicer look yes, but that sacrifices the feel. IMHO.
ebony is expensive wood reserved for the highest end instruments

i dont know man. I got the natural 2018 explorer with the burstbuckers and my guitar is waaaayyyyyy hotter than that bro.. and all I'm running it through is a Egnater tweaker 40 clean with gain dimed. Hands down best guitar ive ever owned
why wouldn't they use ebony or stain the hell out of the fretboard. it makes it look cheap
Hey Austin..we are live on the CNC if you're around would love you in the chat!!!
I love Gibson Explorer, they have a fast neck, if you need speed.
I vote that you should play Dethklok everytime you review an explorer.
I agree with you. The pickups sound really bass heavy and muddy.
Love it!
Also hows Trade Tuesday coming along? Anything lined up for season 2?
Still waiting for a trade/buyer on the Firebird X
*giggles*
You surely do like _Exploring_ the Gibson catalog dont you?
Saying hi to the lawyer Morty comment day 16
Thanks Trogg
I dunno austin you tell me
I like it. I think it looks and sounds great honestly.
Neck pickup is rhythm and bridge is lead? I thought it was other way around.
better to seek out a black 96 model...which was basically a 76 reissue.
I'm a lefty, I own one of these....came with issues, right out of the bag. Same with the matching flying v....which i sold. To be honest, I'm still gratful to have one though, haha.
i hear tenacious D and metallica. i like
Go figure, Dirty Fingers pickups sound pretty good clean. You must have used sanitzer on those fingers
I like it, but the price is way too high for what it is, basically a Faded series.
I had a faded series explorer. Mine came with a black hard case with a white interior and they sold for 999.00 USD new. Evey time I opened that case it took my breath away. Guitar Center in Tallahassee were clearing the series out and I got mine for 499 with the case.
@@pedraw Lucky.
I've got this guitar and it a fantastic one .
A bit pricey for what it is. Man give me the chance to go back and buy one of those government series Explorers new, cheaper and cooler IMO. Where's a time machine when you need one.
That guitar is so metal that my head exploded and burst into flames.
I'm trying to remember, but IIRC the govt mule didn't have a long neck tenon, did it?
i think a studio mod explorer and V's are a great idea but they should then remove the pickguards and keep it glossy instead and price it down to 799
I would use the bridge pick up all the time
Explorer tribute = tribute by tenacious d😂
Wow you can see Trogley’s face! 😮
It does the job well, but definitely needs a case at that price
Would it be possible to mod this to have the pickup selector in the proper place and keep the master tone but have 2 volume knobs
Yeah, easily
Nice review format and love the workbench part , like
I have the flying v, same appointments. I love it
Nice Tenacious D riff for clean
sounds great though
@@Wargasm644 cant agree more, tbh i m not a fan of gibson, i got a schecter chrisgarza signature mode😂
@@xiongharry44 most people are not Gibson fans until they get the right one. But they are awesome guitars. There are no guitars I don’t like. I’m an equal opportunity guitarist 🤘🏻
This is not the greatest Explorer in the world. This is just a tribute.
Could cut cost a little more by putting single pickup and a richlite fretboard.
The Tribute being played while testing out a tribute guitar. Nice 😉😉
What happened to the Jason hook explorer?
Be you demons? Nay! We are but men, Rock on! And a little Crue to top it all off. Trogly, I'm digging your style.
Interesting to see how the packing material varies from country to country. The V didn't come with a strap either!
My V came with a strap, it's tiny though and basically worthless.
I’d rather stick with the standard explorer for that price. Thanks great review
I would get one I'm not even old enough to have a job so I'll have to wait
Kickstart my heart❤️❤️❤️❤️
