In this video I talk through my list of favourite bad guys in western movies. The scary, the evil, the menacing and the wrong. The outlaws and corrupt lawmen that make up the best villains in our favourite genre.
If this is your first time on the channel, please don't be shy and say "hello" in the comments. We're all western fans here and it's a nice space to share your own favourite western heroes and villains with us.
#western #movie #cinemavillains
The real villain in the west is those darn Pinkertons
I can't believe Jack Palance is not on this list, and, at least, close to number one. Great villain in just about any movie, or tv series, he was in.
"Shane" is one of my favourite westerns. Jack Palance is incredible in it. Only problem is he ain't in it enough.
Ramon, Indio, Angel Eyes, Frank & Johnny Ringo… Master Leone had the Best Villains in his movies without a doubt
I'd forgotten about Ramon and Indio...don't know how I forgot as I just watched both those movies recently! Angel Eyes definitely comes up when thinking of western movie villains, but I think maybe both Ramon and Indio might be more evil villains possibly. But that opening scene where Angel Eyes rides in and butts his way into dinner/breakfast with his victim, is definitely a hard scene to beat in it's own right.
Indio was the closest portrayal of a psychopath in western history, not only did he get a sexual thrill out of murder but his opening scene where he lets a guard live to tell every one shows his narcisism and need for control. If we compare him to Frank then Frank is no Psychopath, he's a gangster as he shows when he says in his introduction "well, now you've said my name" before killing the surviving witness.
Van Cleef lived in my town back in the day and I was told [ by the old timers] he was a nice guy who would hang around the local saloons and was very nice to the locals who recognized him, and bought him a drink or 2.
Lee was the backbone of the Spaghetti western industry mate, every film he was in was elevated for it. If I have to compare him with a Brit I would compare him to Christopher Lee. They both had extraordinary lives before acting and they both (probably as a result) could create a screen presence around themselves like no others could.
@@darthwiizius Right you are my friend! Just watched a video on the amazing Christopher Lee. Wow, what a life! Stay well.
@@bootlegcustomshop4129
You too mate.
Gian Maria Volonte and his gang of outlaws in both of the Dollar Trilogy movies were the best group of western movie villains of all time.
I totally agree about Henry Fonda :)
You've got to love Angel Eyes
RIght on SId...Van Cleef lived in my town back in the day and I was told [ by the old timers] he was a nice guy who would hang around the local saloons and was very nice to the locals who recognized him, and bought him a drink or 2.
For me the best of the bad is Angel Eyes (this is the very inscription on Mr Van Cleef's resting place), but not because "he enjoys doing evil", quite the contrary: he's a very peculliar villain - he even kills less people than the protagonists of his film - who aren't close to heroes themselves - and he avoids killing people when it's not necessary (ex. he doesn't kill the whole family of the farmer in the beggining - only the member he was contracted to kill and the teenager son in self defence - had he not come with a riffle, he would be alive - but didn't touch the woman and the child, although they saw him, so they were witnesses that could turn him in and be hanged). He also seems to have a soft spot for disssabled people like his informative and the wounded soldiers in the abandoned fortess, and even leave them some alchohol. This could be part of his backstory, even if we dodn't literally find out, but in the last scene we see he misses the top of his finger, too (yeah, I know Mr Lee lost it building a dollhouse for his daughter, but it also fits plotwise). He's very interesting and presenting him as an one - dimentional, totally evil character doesn't do him justice.
Thanks for the great comment here. Certainly "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" has so much depth and so many layers. I find more every time I watch it.
Very nice N...Van Cleef lived in my town back in the day and I was told [ by the old timers] he was a nice guy who would hang around the local saloons and was very nice to the locals who recognized him, and bought him a drink or 2.
Best Western villain was any Lee Van Cleef character hands down..
That was very good. I may need to watch it again after all these years. Still. I agree in his # 1, Frank has no soul.
Thank you, I completely agree with your assessment. He didn't kill for the heck of it and didn't kill unnecessarily - it was just business to him.
Lee van Cleef was definitely the best of the bad.
Best villain is Blue Duck from Lonesome Dove. He's terrifying and pure evil.
Bruce Dern in the Cowboys was nasty enough to make the list.
Bruce Dern was a vicious villain in "The Cowboys"
Love Bruce Dern!!! But like Samuel L Jackson, and Laurence Fishburn.. they are "over actors".. always playing the same ODD character, only in a different setting.. you could add Nicholas Cage to that list also.. but he kind of falls into a category All Of His Own!!! Genius!!!
I would have put Lee Van Cleef's Angel Eyes above Lee Marvin's Liberty Valance myself but heck this isn't my video lol
I was gonna argue for Lee Van Cleef as ‘Angel Eyes’ because I had forgotten about Henry Fonda as Frank in ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’... but on second thought, I think I agree with your assessment...
I never watched "ONCE APON A TIME..." until our 'tough time' 3 yrs ago. A good movie, I liked it..
Great selections. Jack Palance in "Shane" could be on this list, but who do you then toss out? "Honorable Mention", maybe?
Ringo.
You neglected to mention one of the best of the bad men in western movies. That being the character actor Jack Elam. In his first movie, Rawhide, (not the TV show), staring Tyrone Power and Susan Haward, he plated one of the outlaws who were waiting to rob a stage. In one scene ho was taking shots at Susan Haward's baby sitting in the sand. He played many bad man characters in his early carrier and was an excellent comedic actor in later years.
Jack Elam had one of the greatest faces in movies ever.
Jack Palance in Shane....prove it!
I love this movie so much. I think I'll make a whole other video just about Shane.
RIght you are J. I. ...Palance lived near me back in the day and I even saw him once shopping with his wife . Quite shy in person there but I did get a hello out of him....
I’d have to say Bruce Dern in the cowboys would rank right up there.
I think you are right. The man who killed the Duke is a real villain.
Jack Palance, Bruce Dern,,,but yours are good tho.
RIght you are SC ...Palance lived near me back in the day and I even saw him once shopping with his wife once. Quite shy in person there but I did get a hello out of him....
Great list brother, I agree completley
In the movie "Shane" - Jack Palance as Jack Wilson the hired killer.
A great list! I was half expecting Indio to be in the first place spot. However, can’t argue with Frank hanging out there. Good to see Micah in the opening.
I would have Indio at number 2 purely because he is a clear psychopath. I would keep Frank Frank at number 1 because he is not doing it for kicks but purely because of being a gangster, he's a career killer where for Indio control, misery and murder are the only things that give him a thrill, Indio has little choice where Frank can stop.
Fonda also played the antagonist in the film Firecreek
Thanks for the comment. I've not seen that one. I will have to seek it out.
Not a really bad guy but the antagonist
1. Angel Eyes. No contest. Modern villains (past 40 years) are wussies comparatively.
2. Frank. The country was shocked at the evil in Fondas face. Wow.
3. Ramon, Indio. I must like Spag Westerns!😂
4. Jack Wilson. Was there a more sinister bad guy, besides Angel Eyes?
5. Bruce Dern played more bad guys than anyone, all the way back to Gunsmoke and many more in TV. When he shot and killed The Duke the public HATED him! Thats how good portraying a western villain he was. He deserves honorable mention.
Great video!! 👍🏻 Tough to choose after 1 and 2.
And how can I forget Eli Wallach as Calvera? The Broadway Actor who lied and said he knew how to ride a horse in order to get the part.
Excellent choice of Frank as number one! That introductory scene where he blows the kid away tells you everything you need to know about him.
The music is doing so much in that scene. Frank's theme is THE sound of evil.
my top 5 chart:
1) Russ (Geoffrey Lewis) - The Culpepper Company & Co. ... really a bad guy!!
2) Charles Postlewait (Kevin Costner) - Open Range ... the fire under a quiet water
3) Jared Maddox (Burt Lancaster) - Lawman ... no problems to kill
4) Magua (Wes Studi) - The Last of the Mohicans ... a proud warrior with no faith
5 Jack Sikora (David Bowie) - il mio West ... simply cruel and insane!
Nice list of movies here. Some I still haven't seen yet! I'll be sure to check these out.
Bowie was surprisingly good as Sikora
@@RexHooper1 "il mio West" is an italian movie by Sandro Veronesi with David Bowie and Harvey Keitel. here You can find the version in english language.
ua-cam.com/video/OqC93gec18g/v-deo.html
You also forgot anybody in the movie The Wild Bunch. Killing women in the beginning and everybody in the last scene.
Great list!! Love your #1!!!! Another to add .. Captian Terrell from Outlaw Josey Wales. Bill Mckinney. Who also played the rapist in Deliverance!! Great bad guy!!
"The Outlaw Josey Wales" is one of my all time favourites. Great choice!
Great Choice, Great Video Cowboy 👏❤️
How about Captain Terrill in Josey Wales? You shoulda done a top 20 so you could include the others.
I would happily talk westerns for hours but there is a fun aspect to only picking 5. It's a challenge.
For one of the few times in my life, I completely agree with your choices, and even the order, with the exception of number five. I probably would have gone with Eli Wallach as Calvera in "The Magnificent Seven". Again, like the Henry Fonda character Frank, because he is VERY relatable. But that is the great thing about opinions, everyone has one.
The smile of Frank (Henry Fonda) when he shoot to the kid.... 😢
Jack Palance as Wilson over Michael Biehn as Ringo all day long.
"Shane" is one of my favourite westerns. Jack Palance is incredible in it. Only problem is he ain't in it enough.
@@RexHooper1 He is absolutely the archetypal western bad guy in this. This may be a case of less is more. He isnt in a ton of scenes, but everyone he is in is just perfect. (You know the "mounting his horse" story, yeah?)
@@jasonkane8200 I just looked up the horse mounting story you mentioned. That is wild! It looks really obvious when you know what is going on.
Fun fact: When Henry Fonda turned up on set Sergio Leone went mad, Henry turned up clean shaven and Sergio wanted a reaction from the audience, he wanted them to see Fonda and say "holy shit!! That's Henry Fonda!"(paraphrase). I would probably have had Indio on this least because he was the truest psychopath in western history, he didn't kill because of a plan he got a sexual thrill out of causing misery and from murder. Colonel Mortimer didn't become a bounty killer for money, he became a bounty killer to exterminate vermin and Indio was the rat at the end of the sewer.
Gene Hackman did another great villain-Herod in The Quick and the Dead! He’s one of the main reasons I love that film!
I have a real fondness for that movie and you are right about Gene Hackman in it. He is so great in it.
I’d include Harvey Korman as Hedley Lamarr, he did shoot a guy for chewing gum on line and not having brought enough for everybody. After all, he was known for being strict.
😂😅👍
This is an awesome channel please never stop making videos 🌵🤠
Thank you for this comment! Making videos is tough so I really appreciate a positive comment like this.
@@RexHooper1 the hard work is appreciated for people like me who love westerns and learning about the genre. If you’re ever digging through the idea bucket it would be dope to see the top five iconic costume designs or just unique. The Dollars poncho, Django in the blue outfit (wild but memorable), the white duds of Buster Scruggs, Jackson’s men in Django 66’, Franks gang in OUATITW
Just a few of my favorites I’m sure you have your own, also think it would be cool for people writing fiction to know what is accurate and what is Hollywood at the time of filming.
Unsolicited advice so don’t feel obligated! Can’t wait to see what you put out next
Henry Fonda as Frank in Once Upon a Time in the West belongs on this list.
What about El Indio? (A Few Dollars More) I think he should be on that list! 😉
You are absolutely right!
Great List.
Thank you! Do you have any others on your list that are different from my own?
Rayford Barnes in "The Big Valley"----Chuck Connors as an outlaw in "The Rifleman" episode "Deadly Image"---Leo Gordon in "Gunsmoke"---Don Megowan in "Have Gun Will Travel"
Frank is the number one villain. The scene of him in the movie smiling when he was younger is nothing less than just pure evil.
love western movies and love western book. Louis L,Amour , Eugene Cunningham, Elmer Kelton, Luke Short, Ernest Haycox and many more
I am working on a video where I talk about my top 5 western novels. If you are interested in western books I recommend that you subscribe so that you see the video when I post it up.
After seeing Angel Eyes I am unnerved by Lee Van Cleef any time he shows up on screen. I recently saw him in the background of "The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance" and was anticipating him to bring harm to James Stewart.
I also noticed that he appears to look like a proto-Fred Krueger. Van Cleef can easily haunt one's nightmares; he also fits the description of the shadow man that torments people with sleep paralysis.
Liberty Valance is more a bully than a villain Angel Eyes gets my vote for #2
Nice selection.Instead if Gene Hackman should have selected Jack Palance for two outstanding performances in Shane n The Proffessionals.
I could not agree more with you, Henry Fonda played the villainest of all villains of all western times and you explanation as to why his is the most despicable villain seems to me perfect.
By the way, did you know that the word villain comes from Spanish villano and villano means nothing else than habitant of a villa, little town?. However, it is also used as villano in villain.
Thank you for the comment! I did not know that about the word "villain".
What about Nathan Bourdette (Río Bravo, 1959)? And if you don't believe me, ask Walter Brennan.
Or ask Stumpy rather LOL
Apart from these my favourite western villains are Mervyn ' Vee' Duncan from Navajo Joe (1966), Major Jackson From Django (1966), Ricciolo (Curly) from The Mercenary (1968),John From Companeroes (1970), Ramon From A Fistful Of Dollars(1964), El Indio from For A Few Dollars More (1965),Valler from Mannaja aka A Man Called Blade (1977), Bill ' Dead Man ' San Antonio from God Forgives I don't (1967) , Calvera from The Magnificent Seven (1960), Bartholomew Bogue from The Magnificent Seven (2016) 'El Diablo' Orlowsky from Django Strikes Again (1987), Chaco From Four Of The Apocalypse (1975) and Herod from The Quick And The Dead (1995).
Brilliant list of movies here.
@@RexHooper1 Thank You But If you make part 2 of this video include the names from the above mentioned list.
I totally agree with Herod. "The Quick and The Dead" for me a Great Movie.
I see You enjoy italian western movies! my tip is to watch "Tex e il Signore degli Abissi", an old ('70) movie from Duccio Tessari with the great (unforgived) italian actor Giuliano Gemma in the character of the italian comics hero Tex Willer, created by Bonelli. Unfortunately it's in italian language (no idioms) but I don't know if there a version subtitled or translated in english language.
@@carloitaliano2794 I loved to watch Spaghetti westerns (Both Italian and Spanish ones) in English language Audio version as I know English very well but not in Italian language Audio version or Spanish language Audio version because I am not familiar with both of these languages plus I love to hear Badass Quotes in English language Audio version and sometimes in Hindi dubbed version. English and Hindi are the only 2 languages I know very well.
Missing from your list---Michael Gambon as Denton Baxter in Kevin Costner's Open Range, Jack Palance as Wilson in Shane (when he stalks Eliza Cook, Jr and kills him -the force of the bullet throwing him into the mud -it was a more realistic shooting--(you would not see something like that again till Bonnie and Clyde and The Wild Bunch). Speaking of which --Mapache from The Wild Bunch as a bad guy. Anthony Quinn in Warlock, Richard Mulligan as Custer in Little Big Man.The portrayal of the Massacre of Cheyenne(called the Battle of the Washita by Whites ) at the Washita. The first portrayal of Custer as being nuts and less than noble.
Thanks for the comment. You've got a good list there. Definitely some great villains there.
I know Godless is a show and not a movie however Frank Griffin played by Jeff Daniels is a great villain and my personal favorite Western Villain
Yul Brynner robot cowboy Westworld, 1973.
A Gunslinger designed to be the villain of the park. He is supposed to confront the guests by challenging them to participate in duels, enter Murphy's law. Also, Futureworld as the same gunslinger.
Love this movie Great choice!
❤your list U must add honorable mention: ALAN RICKMAN Quigley Down Under
Jack Palance, my opinion number one!
Hard to have only five. If I could add to the list I would add Brian Dennehy in Silverado and Jeff Daniels in Godless.
I knew that no one could match Henry Fonda as (Frank) .I would have put Gian Maria Volonte in the rankings too He always played a great villain 👍
I like the list
Thank you!
My favorite is without a doubt 'Loco' or 'Tigrero' from the great silence!
Great choice!
Henry Fonda was the best.
the only good one you picked was Lee Marvin - but you left out the BEST - Jack Palance in Shane
"Shane" is one of my favourite westerns. Jack Palance is incredible in it. Only problem is he ain't in it enough.
@@RexHooper1 he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for that role
Bruce Dern, unquestionably, #1
There is also Tigrero (Klaus Kinski) in The Great Silence, one of the most evil motherfuckers in western history and he wins.
El Indio is also legendary, both for his music and for his complexity. He's a monster, but Volonté brings a melancholy to the character that makes him interesting.
Mapache could also get a spot here.
Great choices!
Jack Palance as Jack Wilson in the movie Shane was my favorite bad guy
Great choice. He is such a fascinating character.
THE GOD OF GODS OF VILLAINY IS UNDISPUTABLY , LEE VAN CLEEF !
Catwoman is a villainess. Lee Van Cleef is a god of villainy.
Sadistic yes but the trait that sets them apart is ruthlessness. They will pursue their goals with an intensity where absolutely nothing will stand in their way. Frank, Angel Eyes and even Little Bill portray this best, the others are just thugs.
Totally agree. Great observation.
Have to agree... Henry Fonda is mesmerising as Frank in imo the greatest movie ever made.... Shame Aldo Sambrell's character scalp taker Duncan in Corbucci's Navajo Joe isn't included
I love "Navajo Joe". What a movie. Have you seen my other video talking about it: ua-cam.com/video/gqbCY8c-04A/v-deo.html
2:30 I like the song here, what song is this?
Correct
Bruce Dern in ' hang em High' and 'Cowboys' in which he kills John Wayne.
Henry Fonda's Frank is deeper than Angel Eyes. Fonda was the better actor of the two. Even though Frank was merciless, he had style which one could admire. Lee van Cleef's other great role, Colonel Mortimer, sort of shadows the more evil one.
Your name would be the best choice for a western hero
Angel Eyes is #1
Gian Maria Violante. He gave bring a bad guy new meaning
I wanted to give my list a mix of different kinds of villains from older and newer westerns but you are so right. Gian Maria Violante is GREAT.
@@RexHooper1 look for a film called Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion. It's contemporary and got a couple of Oscar nominations way back when. Violante was very active politically in Italy.
@@larry1824 Thank you for the recommendation I will make sure to see this one.
Disagree. Loco the bounty Hunter in The Great Silence is arguably the most evil, compelling, and strangely charismatic villain in all westerns, in one of the greatest anti-westerns ever made.
I think,Blue Duck should make the list.
Really good choice! Have you read the novel? He is even more evil in the book than in the adaptation.
@@RexHooper1 No I haven't. But I like the speech he gave to Capt Call at the end, about all his bad deeds. He was a badass ,for sure.
What about Ramses in The Ten Commandments or the wicked witch of the west in The Wizard Of Oz ?
What about Antonio Banderas in the movie , The Assassin? Why he is left out in the list?
That movie isn't a western so wouldn't quite fit the criteria I laid out here for my list. But he could be a good choice on another list.
Could you do a video on western heroes?
Good suggestion. I could do. I made a video about my top 5 cowboy actors, some of these guys played heroes and villains: ua-cam.com/video/5apHFtmhIKs/v-deo.html

Jack Palace in Shane 🚜🚜🚜🔵⚫️⚪️

Lee van cleef was the master.
What about the great silence?
In my opinion gian maria volonte el indio role and very unpopular opinion klaus kinski as loco in great silence are definetly top 5
Really great choices. I think on a different day my list would be completely different. It's so hard to pick only 5 but I guess that's the fun, that's the challenge.
@@RexHooper1 definetly there is tons of great villains i couldnt decide who to put on too ESPECIALLY as top 5 list😁 i liked LVC perforrmance as villain in day of anger too reminded me of gian maria's one in the face to face
The only one of these movies I haven't seen is Once Upon A Time and while I have to agree these are the best of the worst I don't agree with your ranking. The one that I remember the most is Snake Eyes, and it's been many years since I've seen the movie yet I still remember him, therefore IMHO, Snake Eyes is the most evil, the worst villain in the west.
Have to include blue duck
Kills children.
Wait a sec...no mention of Hedey Lamar?.....sorry, that's Hedley....Hedley Lamar...lol
No love for Kirk Douglas? Come on! The movie was called "The Villain"! 🤪
I haven't actually seen that one is it worth seeking out? I love Kirk Douglas in "Last Train from Gun Hill".
@@RexHooper1 It's live-action roadrunner styled comedy western where Kirk Douglas is the proverbial Coyoyte,
So it might not be for everyone.
It features a pre-Conan Arnold Schwarzenegger,
In certain countries it was released as "Cactus Jack"
@@RexHooper1 The comedy was mediocre when it was released and has not aged well. The Paleface movies with Bob Hope were a little bit better (not aged as badly), one outstandingly great joke when Bob "saves" Jane Russell from the Gila Monster, it wasn't a stick he used, but You'll have to watch it. The second one has Jane Russell, Roy Rodgers, Jay Silverheels, and Clayton Moore, and more, they are just the ones I remember.
Bruce Dern in the Cowboys
The man who killed the Duke!
Jack Palance would have eaten them alive!
Palance Van Cleef Charley King Emilio Fernandez Gian Violante
This would be a great list too.
LVC
Not agree with all your choices and not with your order. I'll put Sentenza first, Frank second, Liberty Valance third. And for the other two I'll put Jack Palance as Curly and finally Klauss Kinski as The bossu and many other films. I like Lee Marvin, Henry Fonda, Jack Palance very much but NO ONE can match Lee Van Cleef in westerns.
what about the worst villain in western movies? I think Mickey Rourke in the movie "The last outlaw". really out of role... never angry, never bad, still the same void expression on his face... boring.
I've not seen this one. Is the movie any good? You're not really selling it based on the description of the villain.
@@RexHooper1 it's a cheap tv movie. a group of outlaws run away chased by the sheriff after a bank robbery. Rourke is the boss of the band but he's betrayed and shoted by his men but he's still alive. he kills the sheriff and ride with the sheriff's posse to find his revenge.

......and Rex, you better start ranking women in western movies because it will make no impact at all on your poor credibility!...like women in western do....I can't forgive you not mentioning Jack Palance and Klauss Kinski as two of the 5 vilains in westerns, so go home and the next time focus on women in westerns...but just talk about their beauty if you can!...because this is all they are able to offer to catch my attention in western movies!🤣
