You may want to try an attenuator. I went and got one for my 60’s era Bassman I was given. It makes these medium-high output, amplifiers a lot more usable at home for practice and sound guys at gigs will love you.

Do you have a specific attenuator that you would recommend?

@@ToneLoungePodcast I really like my Weber mini mass.

@@ToneLoungePodcast No problem man! If you have any amps that are more than 50 watts I’d recommend going with a 100watt rated attenuator. My line up is all 50watts or less so I can get away with the mini mass. They have a lot of options.

I've got a 1964 mk2. I need to send it to a tech for a tuneup, but it sounds great. I have mostly Mullard tubes in it.

If you play an AC50 mk3 into modern hifi speakers they don't go very loud .... BUT if you play it into musical instrument type speakers which are very sensitive ( 127 dB per Watt metre ) then you will get that original ' blast from the past ...'

I'm trying to purchase some old Fane or Goodmans for the original cab that came with my MKii (Jonathan here). They are not too expensive, so I keep my eyes open for them so I can restore the amp to it's former glory.

May I ask what kind of power tubes you have in yours? I recently got the same amp but it needed new power tubes. The ones I have are too tall. Even the ones that were in there barely fit...they run into the bottom of the screw that attaches to the handle and you have to tilt the tube in the socket (not good) to slide the chassis back in. Need some kind of short bottle EL-34's.

I also have an AC50, although I think the model after this one which had an ECC83 valve in the preamp, instead of an ECC82. This gives it more gain and when cranked sounds like a mix between an older Marshall and an AC30 - probably due to the EL34 valves in the power amp.
I bought an MXR line boost to drive the preamp more and that works very nicely.
I also bought a Harley Benton resistive attenuator - it works perfectly but I’m wondering if it’s not colouring the sound. So soon I will get a Tone King Ironman 2 reactive load which is supposed to be completely transparent.

This amp is way too loud. I am considering an attenuator myself, as I would love to hear the gain tones that come out of this thing.

Does the cabinet have a Midax horn? I have a Mkii AC50 but it has a useless 18” bass speaker in a Foundation cabinet. It’s a righteous sounding amp an any other cabinet.

Yeah, mine has the Midax horn. I have the original, oversized cabinet, but it did not come with the original speakers. I ended up installing a Greenback and a 70th anniversary in the cab. It sounds killer with the AC50.

@@ToneLoungePodcast I am pretty optimistic about Celestion's G12 100 AlNiCo that was announced at NAMM, it looks like the old T0650 but is rated for 30 Watts. Of course, I have not found any in the wild yet, but it coincides with a little bit of money heading my way and I'm trying to set up the rendezvous. It is a bit like Rocket Science, I am in some low-earth synchronous 🛰 and the cash is just perigeeing around from the Asteroid Belt... 🚀
Some big things coming in 2024. ☄️
