As a 66 year old recently started hobby welder I have no idea why I watched this but having seen it to the end I feel like it's an essential part of my learning how to weld. Great job.
Thank you for your very detailed and thorough explanation of exactly what you have going on in this weld. Many of us, young or old (60) are youtube learning here. Your covering so many basics that other good welding channels take for granted is much appreciated. Although I foresee never having to face a welding test and not doing anything but hobby welding, I am learning a lot from your channel. Now its time to head out to the shop to practice.
I usually take a soapstone and mark it about a 1/16" from the edge of the bevel and use it as a guideline for the edge of my cap pass. I try to avoid using a grind line since if you accidentally go to far over it will fail visual.
As a long time viewer from the beginning I would love if you guys could attempt to mig weld (RMD or stt) a 8” piece of schedule 10 stainless. Miller says it can be done in 1 pass with RMD. But other than them saying that I’ve yet to find video of anybody trying it
should have shown us what the root pass looks like before grinding... or each and every pass... and maybe after grinding... that way we know what it should look like and what to shoot for.
Thank you for this video. Great detail, simple to the point explanation, get to it. Hello from Detroit. I'm doing my 1G work tonight on 2"x6"x1/4" Carbon Steel square groove weld 6010 root 7018 cover.
I appreciate Vloggers/Instructors like this for showing the actual travel speed. Other vloggers did some fast forward which is not helpful fur newbies like me. I hope in the upcoming videos they will always include the rod angle. 🤭
hi.subscriber here. I am a welding instructor too. I am starting to upload videos teaching some weld stuff as you do. But some of my viewers keep on telling me to attach a running plate to my workpiece coz I usually do the same thing as your preparation in our practice. I want to clarify this by asking you a question about when to use a running plate when welding like this. Thank you for your response and keep the fire burning.
before attempting a test, be sure that you are allowed to use grinding discs. some tests allow only wire wheels/cups because they don't remove material.
I kept doing 1/8 landing and 1/8 gap and it hasnt turned out very good for me, i cant fill out the walls on the back when im done. So maybe ill try a 3/32nd landing and gap this time
Really good video. The only suggestion I'd make is to see some additional close up when NOT welding (like you did at 15:40). Other than that was really informative.
Nice video, I would like to see a D1.1 one inch thick plate with a landing strip. 7018 1/8 rod from root to cap running stringers then a bend test. Thanks fellas. 👍
A wire wheel will remove metal. I had a burn out on my vertical plate first coupon today. I put my mig gun away real fast. Got on the six inch grinder, with wire wheel, held that sucker on the," grape", an it disappeared. I waited for the plate to further cool. Then continued on like normal. Bent all plates. Two more years of all position welder for this guy.
Thanks , you gave a lot of great tips. The prep work, tie in and a few other things you mentioned helped and made a huge difference in my class work 👍💯
Thank you, I got ideas for my test but there is something I dont understand: your root pass was 100 amps becuase is a 6010 1/8, your first pass was 125 amps becuase is a 7018 1/8, and when the plate is already warm your second pass was 135 amps, higher than the first pass? it is not lower for the heat effect, I mean second pass 110 amps?
Welding emits UV light. You're basically staring at the sun for a living. Yes it's very hard on your eyes. If you accidentally stare at the Arc bare eyed even for a split second you can get Arc eye which is Sunburn on your eyeball
Nice video, helps me see closer how you move the rod and control your hand. 2 thumbs up! I'm learning bro... thanks! I'll check out more of your videos and see if you cover 2G and more. ^_^
You used a grinder after the root pass, but a wire wheel after all the other passes. Is 6010 slag too difficult to remove with a wire wheel, or is there a specific reason to grind the root pass?
Mark Lowry to ensure complete fusion on whatever you’re welding on. If you run a 6010 rod for a root the edges are rolled up and not tied in the base metal on the side you welded on, and just welding over that isn’t guaranteed to burn all the way in. Could leave spots of slag or lack of fusion. Grinding helps reduce any of that from happening
Hi, thanks for the tips. I wanna ask if you use an auto-darkening mask or not? Because it's hard to use the ordinary dark welding mask. I hope you can reply to my comment
Can y’all do a 2G weld with Tig on 1/8 plate. Root, hot, fill and cap? I’m currently in college for GTAW and I have a weld test coming up for it. Could really use pointers.
Can you guys make a video of inconel and 309 stainless stick welding to this same plate. Might help some people. I just toom 9 plate test. 3 carbon, 3 309, and 3 inconel. Had no clue how to weld the 309 to carbon or the inconel. I did manage to pass all 18 bends though.
Whilst I do enjoy things like this I would like to ask....... You burn 6013 on dirty pipe? 7018 on an overhead? . The 6010 is a great rod for me. I work in the well drilling industry. Nothing is clean and we have to make repairs no matter what.
How do you know how many hot passes you need between the root pass and when your start your cap passes? Is the cap literally just the last few passes to get it flush with the top?
I understand clean grinding the front, because the cap will consume some of that from the top. But why clean grind the back, as the weld doesn’t come from that direction, and shouldn’t break through? The tacks aren’t critical.
I’m assuming it’s for the 6010 root pass. Probably because you want penetration and the parent metals to blend together at the landing so if there’s any contamination on the backside of the plate it’ll pull through into the weld.
Its Mags cutting metal is done with a torch. There is bench grinder to clean the edge after torching. Cutting your test into bendable strips is done with a bandsaw. But there is no electric grinders or wire wheels allowed in the welding process. Slag hammer and hand held wire brush only.

Great video Mikey. Awesome tip about the grind line. Abraham taught me that when we were over there in October. Stay safe out there Brother.

Yo Mikey, awesome video brother 👊🏻👊🏻
Got this test tomorrow at school, video helped me fix my root problem
Did you guys have an recommendation amps for root pass?
Thanks for this video, this is really gonna help me when It's time for me to take my 1g test in welding school
It helps a lot but I still fail at it good luck
Glenn Shanks I passed it haha
Awesome vid!! I start learning stick tomorrow night in college class. Had a quick question. Do you guys offer AWS testing there?
Jason Schagt all colleges do.
so on the second field are you running the first bead with the zig zag method then dragging with the second bead
Thanks brother it really helps to improve our welding at workshops

Hi I am just learning stick welding as a hobby, why do you leave a gap between the plates instead of having them touching at the start?
Terimakasih ilmunya i'm for Indonesia student welder 🤘

What happens if you do a 7018 open root? Or use only one type of electrode on it?
I have the same exact welder and I cannot figure out the voltage settings for stick mine is set at 86.6 Volts
This helped out a lot thank you!
Double lens filter or something to see actual welding. Did you grind clean after every pass ?
Hello dear how are you my name is Farrukh Iqbal from Pakistan I am work as a 3G welder Smaw Process at Ship Yard your work is good
Thanks sir I like the way you show
How many times root pass with 7018?
This is awesome do yall think yall could do a 2g v groove
Nice video my man. I know you mentioned towards the end on how long you waited before CAPPING it, but how long do you wait before each pass? Thanks!
The cwb dosnt allow anything that removes metal on tests... any tips for only being aloud a wire wheel
File that shit lol
A wire wheel will remove metal.

Another great video, Mike! Your instruction really comes across well. Thanks!!
Seems to be too much heat for my taste. There's spatter everywhere. I'm 67 and been Welding Profesionally since I graduated HS in 1972.
that's what I was thinking.. he's keyholing pretty large, but he held 'er.

Great video. Thanks and keep up the amazing work guys.
Would the temperature you are using here will it work on a 3/8 plate?
Video for schoolchildren? Welds in the ceiling position.
Can you do a step by step 3g 1’’ unlimited weld test
What is best and durable inverter welding i would purchase if i plan to buy in the comin days,,, respect my post
Where's the root , why u didn't clean up the weld before presenting it ?
haha great video. I bet the high school teacher skipped the part where u were using the grinder one-handed;)
That cuhh’s helmet reps trokiando 💯
Most of the welders that i know ended up wearing glasses so am wondering if it affects the eye vision on the long run

This nice video . I hope you make you video because i need learn welding in class .👌👌✌️👍
This helps alot im in v groove class rn and definitely helped me
Nice video, helps me see closer how you move the rod and control your hand.
6010 doesn't have flux on it so there is really no need for a wire wheel other then to make it look pretty, all 60 series rods have no flux.
TherealBeaston there is definitely flux on every stick rod lol and the 60 is the tensile strength not the flux composition.
Mark Lowry to ensure complete fusion on whatever you’re welding on. I mean 1/2 inch plate.
And a 5/32 root opening
This on a 3/8" plate that looks thicker, with similar root opening: ua-cam.com/video/x8yAdlDcHv4/v-deo.html
That "1/8" inch 7018 looks like a "5/35" in this guys hands... dang....
You use Lincoln electrodes. .?
Where did you get that type of welding hood?
watching again... damn. Great work.
How to make a welding helmet similar to yours?
For the root you use thinner electrodes?
Que buen video muchas gracias. Quiero una careta para soldar como esa

what kind of welding mask do you use?
Same doubt for me
@WeldTube amperage for root?
He just asked for the appropriate drawer to operate the machine
Grinded is to ground as splatter is to spatter. My Wife (an English teacher) keeps bugging me about it. Loved the vid, keep it up!

Are you sure that was a 6010 rod, I’m quite sure it acts more like a 7018 rod.

What amperage are you at with your root? Still 70?
I’m practicing this in school rn it’s pretty hard to start it cause u have to make the bottom look nice
im practicing in school as well, any tips to get the penetration down?
@@joshmoya694 yea I liked keeping my plate tight so all I have to do is drag it or u could step it much easier
Only do those weaves on 2 passes to much heat do stringers after that
