Hmm, if you are using lead white or a titanium adulterated with barite, I think some some gentler pigments like genuine teraverte or azo green gold in concert with ultramarine will serve you just as well. Antica Green Earth (Rublev and I think Vasari carry it, kremer has it in dry pigment form) is a yellowish moss green that fits in a low chroma gap between yellowish green and greenish yellow. Ultramarine+Azo Green Gold is another favorite of mine, it makes some gorgeous dark greens that, like the thalos, are vibrant and transparent, but more natural looking.
If you are worried about the clay content some natural earth pigments, the sinking in and brittleness can be mitigated with some bodied oil and, or, working on a rigid substrate.
