Alex had so much to fill out for their sound from standard rhythm to lead to little subtle fills (especially in the 80’s). He got to be one of the most thoughtful guitar players of all time which is so much better than someone who can shred a million notes in a minute. It’s about the musicality and Alex is one of the best. Glad he’s finally getting the recognition he’s always deserved.
I think I like Natural Science just a bit better than Jacob's Ladder, but this is the exact equivalent of me saying I like one million dollars better than $999,999.99 😄
Saw Rush 18 times ! Wanted to recommend this one from the Exit Stage Left concert. It's titled: Medley ,By Tor and the Snow Dog, In the End, In the Mood, Grand Finale . Fasten your seat belt for this one !
Back in ‘96, I hadn’t been to a Rush concert since the early 80’s, so jumped at the chance and was able to see this tour in December, where they played this song (and the entire 2112 first side, amongst other classics). Thereafter, Neil had his family tragedies in quick succession and they were done. Or so we thought until Vapor Trails and their tour in ‘02. You can bet I caught that one too!
Seen them live 4 times late 70's early 80's, Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Canada. You were excited and at the same time just sitting in awe of the performance. True professionals.
Permanent Waves is maybe Rush's best work. You just can't really say. Moving Pictures, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres. Maybe they are all Rush's greatest album. I am fortunate to have seen Rush over 40 times starting in 1975 or 1976 in the Toledo Sport's Arena. They were the opening band of Three. In order first Rush, then Lesley West and Mountain and Headliner Lynyrd Skynyrd. What a Great show. But I feel their best concert I seen was A Clockwork Angels in 2013 even though Neil was beginning to struggle. I was at the Phoenix show. It is one of the venue's used for the DVD. My favorite band. Nell Peart will be missed. Rush will be missed. What talent.
Neil beginning to struggle on clockwork Angels tour? WTF I saw that tour and he was a machine. For that matter he kicked royal ass on their very last tour in 2015. It was Alex who was struggling with arthritis and Geddy struggling with high vocal parts. Neil was strong til the very end.
"Natural Science" is definitely in my top 5 Rush songs. "Jacob's Ladder" is incredible but it's not in that class. The lyrics to this song are some of the most important Rush has ever written. We truly live in a "mechanized world, out of hand." Our science has become a monstrous distortion of what it should be because it doesn't acknowledge the spirit. We all need to meditate on the message of this song.
Loving the translucent picture in picture box! You are upping your game here. "A computerized clinic, for Superior Cynics, who dance to a synthetic band, in their own image, their world is fashioned, no wonder they don't understand" Love these Neil lyrics! This song and La Villa Strangiata were very technical to play live, they rarely played these complex tunes, but man Three Geniuses rocking out! Next Level. Great Request!
John, if you want to re-listen to Jacob's Ladder you should listen to the live version from the "Exit, Stage Left" CD!! It's ripping good! Note, this is the audio-only version, which did not appear on the video/concert film of ESL. But it's awesome anyway. Check it out!
Just to throw a wrench in...there is a monster live version of Jacob's Ladder that may sway you back....in fact I am sure it will. Btw, Neil throws out one hell of a hyperkinetic drum solo during this same concert! ua-cam.com/video/6XPrNGpzeGI/v-deo.html
Almost getting back to some good Rush periods again! :) Not that classic Rush is bad, but it's hard to believe that people haven't already heard some of their key songs before - you can't spit in a grocery store without hearing Tom Sawyer or Spirit of Radio at lest once in your life. And if you've ever tuned in to a classic Rock radio station, you're guaranteed to have heard Closer to the Heart or Fly By Night at least a dozen times. It's hard for me to bother listening to anything prior to Signals anymore (which also includes Subdivisions receiving regular airplay on classic rock radio, and New World Man having actually achieved Billboard chart status in the 80's) because it's just SOOOOO overplayed throughout my life. Then you have the 50+ year olds reliving their youth via "2112" and obsessing over that period of lost brain cells, and virtually writing them off once Neil and Alex demanded greater attention for their more nuanced approaches to lyrics and playing as of Grace Under Pressure. They're the "gatekeepers" of the fanbase here... who conveniently leave out 2/3 of Rush's catalog in the process.
generally its my understanding that if you don't go looking for good music you won't find it. If rock isn't your type of genre you won't go about listening to such bands.
Bro, be quiet. Why do you come here and bust chops? Rush went through stages in their career and some folks prefer different stages. We should all applaud their ability to stay relevant for 40-plus years.
@@uroktim Because it's a reaction channel and reacting to a song that they have more than likely heard or stumbled across via Google or a Youtbe search for Rush, defeats the point of the reaction. You can't spit Rush's name on UA-cam without kitting YYZ, Tom Sawyer, Spirit, or 2112. And I'm more interested in seeing how someone reacts to a song like "The Pass", which even Rush fans forget about, than Tom Sawyer, for the 1000th fucking time. Especially when that song is about teenaged suicide vs a song about... space aliens, or some shit?
"Dad, I need a set." "A what?" "Drums. Traps. Something to bang!" "Bang the girls. And that's a NO." "I need practice." "You need a sucker punch! See this (a fist)? Now, mow the lawn. You expect living is for free?" I finally got my way. Dad was tough, but I know how to negotiate. My 1st was TAMA. Neil did those way back then. And, I cried (I usually don't) when I found out that he passed. Great reaction: As always. Keep it up! Cheers from derelict Gothenburg, Swedonia.
Another note on production, though I like lyrics, i prefer none or reading after and discussing story behind song is better. I think it is distracting listening/watching AND reading lyrics trying to figure out the story. Multi-tasking should be left, at the office. Have Some Fun!! "For the Spirit ever lingers undermanding contact with your happy solitude"!!
You think this great Wait until you see The 2112 full version from that same tour and this show It’s unreal - maybe the best thing I have ever seen Alex play
"All the busy little creatures chasing out their destinies. Living in their pools, they soon forget about the SEA!"
.
Love Love Love this lyric...

His arpeggios are so top notch. And his ability to texture and create moods he is just all around a great guitarist.

One of the few bands that sound as good live as the studio versions. Three masters that were generally flawless on stage. Incredible!
Molson Amphitheater June 1997, great Awesome show, ANOTHER example of the extra gear they had LIVE, Thank You!

That is why they are "The Best"...
One of my absolute favourites and this was am excellent live performances. ❤️❤️❤️
i was at this concert at the molson amphitheatre down by the lake....absolutely ELECTRIC!!!!
You have to understand, that this is a song they hadn't played live in 15 years or so. So it was crazy to hear it live at the time.
One of my favorite songs.

Thats what guitar, bass and drums can do i the hands of masters....

Better version and audio on the Snakes and Arrows live tour performance IMO.
I love that riff you do for your intro!

a comment that never gets old is. "I can't believe the sound that comes out of this band is from only 3 guys!"
What a great live performance that was. Thanks for reacting John.
Awesome John!! It does that song so much more to see it live doesn't it! Wish you had seen them as much as you're enjoying this!!!
My absolute favorite off of PW LP!!!
I think if I had to pick one song that best encapsulates the prog-rock side of Rush’s music and career, Natural Science, would probably be it.
This live performance WILL sway your opinion … until you see them perform Jacob’s Ladder on the R40 tour. Played live for the first time in 35 years!
Alex and his really big chords, uh thank you.
John, if you want to re-listen to Jacob's Ladder you should listen to the live version from the "Exit, Stage Left" CD!! It's ripping good! Note, this is the audio-only version, which did not appear on the video/concert film of ESL. But it's awesome anyway. Check it out!
Dumbfounded by this sound!!!!
Listen to the live version of “Jacob’s Ladder” off of “Exit… Stage Left”.
Love your channel John. You gotta synch your video to audio tighter though. Like the apex musician! 👍
Try Jacobs Ladder live from their final R40 tour. 2015. Awesome
You can always have a tie for first place. I love both the same but for different reasons. The entire album is just killer!

That's Leave That Thing Alone, not Jacob's Ladder. Here is a good live performance of Jacob's ua-cam.com/video/yTCSWHT5Amg/v-deo.html
@@rockodilechannel3509 I was talking about the drum solo. lol
@@rockodilechannel3509 This is the best live performance of Jacob's Ladder. ua-cam.com/video/JBCMSmF1G1o/v-deo.html
rush between the wheels
I heard a little influence from Brubeck's Blue Rondo A la Turk in there.
Nice to see Neil with the gotee
Off that. Was a Great reaction
🐐 🐐 🐐
"Alex Lifeson dude. Alex Lifeson."
That is all.

Good live performance but the faster tempo doesn't do it for me. There's a lot nuance that is lost in faster playing.
Driven…
