  • Look Inside Saxon Math || Saxon 3 Flip Through
    Take a look in the inside of Saxon math 3. You can see the table of contents to see what level 3 covers, view a sample lesson, and and check out what the student sheets contain. I also list the pros and cons that I've seen with the program.
    Here's a look inside level 5/6:

    I loved learning with Saxon as a child and I'm loving to teach it now too. My 6 year old is using Saxon 3 right now after doing Saxon 2 last year. We "leveled up" at the start by taking the 0 assessments until she reached concepts she didn't grasp.
    My only issue with it is it takes so long to get through a lesson. We do the meeting strip (for now) but only one side of the worksheet. It's about 45 minutes on average for all of it.

      It is long but we pick and choose what we do. And in 4th grade it becomes more independent!

    Thank you for taking time to do this review. It’s helpful getting some ideas and insight and how you are using this Saxon level. I’m working on making some choices for my littlest one, and his next level up. So this helps! ❤

    One question, I know your video is 2 years old but maybe you can help me. Two years ago I switched my then 3rd grade from Math-U-See Beta which is substraction, having mastered addition facts,as far as ai can remember. I switched to Math Lessons for a Living Education 4. We just finished our second year with that book and we are not even half way through. In the middle I spent a lot of time doing multiplication tables with him and this year we did AIM Multiplication from Math U See which is a bridge to get those facts down really well. Well, he is going into the 6th grade and I was done with Math Lessons for a living Education, wanting to try out Saxon 5/4, I administered the placement test and he placed for Saxon 5/4 but more Saxon 3.
    For like two seconds I was like: there is NO WAY I am going to put him in Saxon 3 😣😣😣😣. But then I became ok with the idea, so long as it can help him. My question to you is since he is turning 11 in about another month, do you think Saxon 3 would be too babyish for him?? Or should I go ahead and do it. And since by now I bet you have experience with 5/4 do you think I should just do that with him?
    TIA!!!

    With review we do all 3 options!!! We are looking at Saxon or Singapore math for my 11 year old son!!! Nothing wrong with talking about it in the day!!! My younger son just keeps going with his math!!! We add in real life math anyway but having real life Math definitely helps especially as I have to be creative!!!

    My experience is it is not a flashy curriculum by any stretch, but the strategies (at least in Saxon 2) have been so solid. (Example: Teaching addition with carrying with pennies and dimes. I mean, what a duh concept, but I’ve never seen it introduced that way! And then to place the “new” dime down low next to the number left in the pennies place? I mean, so obvious, but my mind was blown.)

      I love that too! They have several things like that where it just gives you a different way of looking at it. Sometimes they’re super helpful to my kids and sometimes they prefer the “traditional” way but it’s nice to have options!

    Your Saxon reviews have been so helpful! Thank you Rian! I'm 90% sure I'm going with Saxon for my first grader this upcoming school year. Do you have a video on your file crate system?

      Yes! It’s a little older but we still do it about the same:

    Hi Rian! I purchased my teacher’s books for grades 1 and 3 used, and I’m not finding the masters. Should they be in the back? Do you know if there is a downloadable pack of the masters somewhere on the internet? Or maybe they really aren’t necessary! Thanks!

    • @MommaonMission
      @MommaonMission  Рік тому +1

      The masters I believe are in the pack of student pages. That’s where you’ll find worksheets and flash cards. I think the works sheets are pretty necessary to make sure the concepts are being understood.

    Currently using masterbooks and planning to switch to Saxon . From your experience, do I need to buy the whole kit

    • @jackiemadegwa5906
      @jackiemadegwa5906 2 роки тому +1

      I mean buying the whole kit including the Manipulstives. I'm currently fascinated by Saxon after following you for s while now and math currently has been hard for both my son and I. I want I currently that guides me well in teaching my son and so I love that Saxon is scripted and tells you what to do as a teacher when sometimes you feel unsure

    • @MommaonMission
      @MommaonMission  2 роки тому

      What seems hard to you about Masterbooks? I wouldn’t classify Saxon as easy but it may help you just teach in a different way…
      If you are starting at Saxon 3 I don’t know that I’d buy the whole box of manipulatives. They only use a few of them from the whole box at this level.

    • @arielledrees7721

      What about 2nd grade, does it still use much of the manipulatives? Thinking of switching my 2nd grader this next year

      We used Masterbooks for kindergarten and I don’t feel it’s complete. I’ve noticed several holes in my sons math concepts. I’m looking at Saxon or horizon. Something more traditional.

    • @jackiemadegwa5906
      @jackiemadegwa5906 2 роки тому +1

      @@emilylong9887 I think for me my challenge with masterbooks has been the approach and method of teaching. I struggle teaching my son. I've struggled teaching or introducing some concepts to my son. It's a lot of brain work on how to teach or approach a concept in s way that your child understand. What I'm liking about Saxon is that it's scripted so it tells the teacher exactly what to tell it instruct the child. Also I think there are videos on teaching Saxon that is a great resource for struggling teachers 🤣
