      @@11jerans I've always imagined that rather than one rocket motor propelling the round from the rear, it's 3 - 4 slightly offset rockets that spin the round around its center axis while pushing it down range. My problem has always been why a supposedly .65 caliber gun looks like it's at least 40mm on the model. And then I start wondering how the heck somebody reloads the main gun in a Leman Russ and things start to spiral downward from there.

    In my youth I was in New York, Manhattan and saw actual zip guns that were used to shoot at each other that make this stuff look like HK's.
    Standard was tear an antenna of a car, break it off at the sliding section that fits the .22 or .25 round that you bought cheap. Wooden handle, which means a scrap of wood from a construction site.
    Black electricians tape, the old stuff with fabric backing. Rubber band to power the nail to fire it. takes about thirty seconds to load, a couple seconds to fire, usually by pulling back on the rubber band by hand.
    Best are big rubber bands used in offices, you find them on the street.
    You can make it in a half hour shoot it, and drop it in a trash can as you walk away. The bullets keyhole which makes even a .22 long decent at three feet, since you don't have to kill them, just take them out of the fight. or just use it to threaten with.
    Fortunately I got the hell out of there.

      @@PianoEmu1120 they actually don't. You get nearly the same spread from a shotgun with a 12 inch barrel as you do from an 18-20 inch assuming it has no choke.
      The real reason sawn offs were said to have more spread, at least in the old days, is because most single/double barreled sporting/hunting shotguns had some level of permanent choke, where the bore gets a bit tighter towards the end of the barrel. Which gives them a tighter pattern and therefore a bit more range.
      But if you cut beyond a few inches off the barrel you've just removed the choke. So that same gun once sawn off WILL produce a wider pattern than before.
      However, if you take a modern Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 type shotgun and install any length barrel with a "cylinder bore" (which is a fancy term for no choke) you will get no discernible difference in pattern from a

      @cloverleafsippa713 technically a longer barrel should result in more powder burning before the projectile exits, resulting in higher pressure and increased velocity/range. So barrel length IS related to velocity, but only in that a longer barrel should add velocity. A shorter barrel will definitely have less velocity, and more muzzle flash as more powder burns after exiting the barrel.

      A Bolter rifle would be hard, seeing as they have more in common with the Gyrojet gun than a typical firearm. The closest we'll ever see to a Bolter is an automatic grenade launcher, and those only come in 40mm. Even then they aren't rocket powered.

    • @andrewmattox1233
      @andrewmattox1233 3 роки тому +1

      I'm pretty just it is .75 Cal.
      The decimal is important, as in 3/4ths of an inch.
      .5 Cal, is 1/2 an inch.
      To put this in perspective:
      12 gauge shotgun -> .729 Cal.
      10 gauge shotgun -> .775 Cal.
      The standard bolter (in terms of diameter, would be about an 11-ish gauge shotgun.
      That shoots a rocket assisted explosive slug.
      Though at this point, people may have started dropping the leading decimal. So idk.

    I've visited some police crime labs, where they typically keep one of every firearm make and model they ever come across, for ballistics comparison purposes. That includes keeping every one-off firearm they have ever found. Some of the improvised firearms I have seen are *insane*. Visit a major metro (i.e. Philadelphia) crime lab sometime for an extra epic episode of cursed gun images ;)
    I will say, statistically, almost all firearm-related crimes are done with 'illegal' handguns that used to be legal handguns....straw purchases, illegally sold, and lost/stolen firearms (sometimes unreported) being used in crimes are most common, as well as firearms originally purchased in states that have background check loopholes [Edit due to comments: Yes, this is not a huge issue, vs lost/stolen and straw purchased, and illegally sold firearms. But yes, person-to-person firearm sales are state law, not Federal law, unlike FFL firearm sales, so some states do have person-to-person firearm sales loopholes that require no ID or background check for sales. I have bought an AR, legally, in a Bass Pro parking lot with no paperwork before. Totally legit. Depends on the state and state law....].
    Home-made firearms being used in crimes are even less common than rifles, and rifles are very uncommon. Legal gun owners without a criminal record are not likely to commit violent crimes with firearms, and most likely to use a handgun if they do. The bulk of those 'legal firearm' related incidents are domestic violence, acts of passion, or else, self-inflicted.
