      I imagine it takes a lot of patience, but he probably trained them to associate the carriers (as well as a vocal cue it seems) with food. Positive association is a powerful thing with animals.

      @jaytee2642 7 років тому +10

      Ellis,
      Exactly. I started keeping the carrier under my bed, open. My cat liked to sleep in there where it was quite and dark.
      She stopped associating it with ONLY going to the vet.

    I hated cats. Now I have two. I love them very much. Picked them up from outside after say 5 minutes of talking about it with my husband. There was a typhoon and when it was over with trees and bush strewn all over we saw 3 kittens taking shelter under what used to be a big bush. We have 2 of them, the neighbor got the other one. We also have a neighbor who does what you do! Feeds all the homeless cats in our neighborhood. Gives them shots and spays/neuters them, too. God bless that lady!!!

    I'm so happy that you help out this cats.... I do the same in my neighborhood but people are very mean and cruel too me because i feed them... It breaks my heart too see how mean people can be, when all I'm doing is helping them out...

      I took care of a feral colony in my neighborhood, even trapping 19 of them and got them spayed and neutered, vaccinated and medical care. I had some nasty neighbors who were capturing cats and torturing, mutilating and killing them. So I bought a cottage in the country, trapped the cats and moved them there where they were safe. They became tame over the years, and the last one passed away last February. The trolls are out posting nasty comments here. They'll rot in hell. Meanwhile, I did something positive by getting the cats fixed so they couldn't multiply. Bless those of you who care for feral cats.

      @carpanthers4ever Sounds like me. I have rescued cats my whole life. As a child I once had 21 cats and a dog. I found all of them homes except for my two original ones. People would dump them near our house purposely because they knew that I would care for them and find them homes. My family would get so angry. I didn't realize but it was probably very expensive for my family to feed all of them. I'm still doing it all these years later. ♥️🐾😊

    You know, I agree with ya"all about non-native species. But these cats where already here---I don't see why they deserve to die any more than the species they hunt. They've been here long enough (75 years by some accounts) that the local populations have adapted to them. How do I know this? Cos I almost never see feathers. Those birds which are vulnerable to cat predation have simply stopped living in the two acres these cats roam over. However, the good news is that there are about 200,000 acres right next door that are cat free.
    I trapped and sterilized every breeding pair, so when these cats die there will be no more cats here and the ecosystem can return to normal. Although "normal" is a pretty hard idea to pin down. Animal species have been migrating all over this planet since the dawn of time by whatever methods are available to them. To try to eradicate all "non-native" species and return the planet to some dimly imagined "pre human influence" time when everything was "perfect" is a Sisyphean task. We have to accept that we humans are a part of nature and have our influence upon it, just as every other species does. One of our many influences has been to spread thousands of species of animals and plants to parts of the globe they are not native to. There are countless examples of this and trying to "undo" what has been done is pretty unlikely.
    I know that in my little part of the world, when these cats die, there will be no more feral cats on this ranch. I felt that these cats did not deserve to die just because they are non-native species---they did not ask to be here after all---we humans are the cause of them being here-----
    In a few years this ranch will be rid of this particular non-native species and the species they prey on (native and non-native) will be free to expand back onto this little patch of ground.

      +cubomania3 That is such a sophomoric answer. Give the man some credit in being as humane as possible when dealing with an invasive species.

    • @CatfishBigg
      @CatfishBigg 8 років тому +6

      +cubomania3 Feral and outdoor cats are a human made problem that requires a human made solution. Humane Euthanasia is the only option. Unless you prefer re-abandoning those cats so they can eventually get run over by cars, shot, poisoned, or die a long slow death from disease or parasites all while continuing to kill native wildlife. That's pretty disgusting if you support that.

    • @CatfishBigg
      @CatfishBigg 8 років тому +5

      +cubomania3 look, another animal killer who would rather see cats get run over by cars, poisoned or die from disease. Why do you hate animals so much and why do you contribute to the death of BILLION of native species each year? The sociopath is the one who would rather re-abandon a pet back in the wild where it will suffer, rather than give it a peaceful death and keep it from needlessly killing native species. You are a sick person, you might want to get treatment soon.

    • @CatfishBigg
      @CatfishBigg 8 років тому +2

      +Topp Catt How does snipping off a cats ballz stop it from killing wildlife? And while you supporters of TNR wait for humane attrition to take place, which in most cases for these cats is getting run over by a car, shot or poisoned, or dying a long slow death from disease or parasites, are you keeping track of how much wildlife they kill...? of course not. for anyone who supports TNR it's out of sight out of mind.

    This is amazing! I've never been much of a cat lover, but after moving into my new house there are a handful of feral cats in the neighborhood that don't trust humans and run away when they see you. Lately I've been putting food and water out on my back porch at the same time twice a day and they come and let me watch them eat. I'm slowly gaining their trust. I'm thinking of building a shelter in the backyard for the cats because it storms a lot here in Texas.

      ***** I live in the desert where rats and mice are a huge problem, and no I've never seen a rat, mouse, lizard, snake or even a tarantula. None of my neighbors have either. These cats do serve a purpose. One of them killed a huge scorpion. I stood right on it. Had it still been alive it might have stung me. These cats are handy. They even help me from feeling lonely and useless. I like to sit outside and have them all laying around enjoying the sunshine with me. It's very peaceful and serene.

    I would encourage you (an every human I know) to follow your calling. If putting bullets in animals is what makes your spirit soar, then go for it!
    I have found that with modern sights are so good that target shooting soon gets pretty boring. Listening to that still quiet voice inside me has led me to understand that interacting with animals that are full of life is far more rewarding than turning them into carcasses.

      +mocoi2bohapu3 Oh my gosh, YES !! These are living beings, no matter how they arrived at this particular juncture and need a thoughtful involvement, not some hasty life ending action. I've been caring for about 15 or so homeless cats in our mobile home park and it's been rewarding in ways I wouldn't have expected. Some have become so loyal, it's mind bending to understand they seek you out to give back and interact with kindness.

      ***** Try alleycat.org Its an organization, non profit, that helps with strays and ferals. The kittens are easier to tame for obvious reasons, especially when they are around 3 weeks old. You can get close to them by sitting a distance from them over time. It's hard to be patient, but if they get used to you they will come closer over time. Little kittens can be coaxed closer with cat tuna or baby food, like chicken in gravy, so they learn to trust you. They won't hesitate to exploit person providing food. Also, there are traps for the ferals so they can be spayed or neutered, ear tipped, and return to the outside home they are used to. Over time the big kitties will die off and not make any more kittens. It takes patience. Good luck.

    • @dovebutter
      @dovebutter 9 років тому +2

      ***** You can see if there is a feral cat rescue place where you live and they will help you set...or loan you the traps. There are videos on how to trap ferals...it's not all that hard most of the time. You might get a few that are tricky in the end. If so, use tuna and a bit of catnip and maybe camoflauge the trap in a big box. Good luck!

    • @mocoi2bohapu3
      @mocoi2bohapu3  8 років тому +8

      Find a local TNR organization (Trap Neuter return). Get some traps from them. Wire the traps in the open position. Train the cats to go in the traps---Put food close to the traps for a couple of days, then in the entrance of the trap, then all the way at the back. Gradually get them used to the idea of the traps. Once they will go in the traps regularly, then you make the vet appointments and trap them.
      I prefer to set the traps fairly far apart so they noise doesn't freak out the other cats.
      I also like to actually rig the traps so that the cats get used to the feel of the little flap of metal that they step on that actually triggers the trap and they get used to the sound the trap makes. But I use a piece of wire, or a zip tie to stop the door before it closes all the way.
      You feel like the lowest of the low when you betray their trust, but don't worry, once you release them after it is all over they always hang around. And if you don't do it, you will soon have dozens of cats to look after. They breed very!!! quickly.
      Any more questions?
      Look up TNR on google or youtube.

    I loved this video!! 😻 it's like watching eastenders for cats. (Eastenders is a massive soap on UK TV). I think it's brilliant what you're doing. You're not stopping the animals from being wild they can go wherever they like and carry on living the way they have been, but they have safety and food. An animal doesn't have to be an endangered species to be looked after in a way that doesn't stop them being free.

    I would love to know Mike's last name - I just love what he is doing. If you read this Mike - can you let me know how much it costs to build the different feed boxes - and how you build them. I have always tried to save animals - but at this time in my life I don't have much money. Also with age has come problems with my ability to bend my knees - and I can't life heavy weights anymore. But I know just helping one makes a difference. I really applaud your efforts and creativity - your doing wonders. I'm so thankful you can afford to get them all spayed and neutered - and your kindness - we need more people like you. The world would be such a better place.

    God bless you for what you do for these cats! You took on someone else's responsibility to feed and spay/neuter and give them a good life. I firmly believe in TNR as the humane and effective way to deal with so many homeless feral cats. We have a responsibility to these animals who were domesticated and then abandoned.
    I was wondering if you were a "cat person" before you moved there? Or did you have to warm up to the idea? Did you know anything about feral cats or did you just take it upon yourself to learn and come up with a solution to help? I hope you have financial help for feeding and medical care.
    Thank you for going above and beyond, for doing something that you did not have to do (and so many would not have). They all look healthy and happy.

      +Catwoman12nc do we have any responsibility to our native wildlife that is decimated by the BILLIONS each year by feral cats? Or do they not count in your mind since they aren't your precious fur babies.

    Everyone focussed on kittens. Feral cats are tamable it just takes a lot of time and effort and money. Best thing is to build a huge enclosure in your garden with a covered section for when it rains and spend a good few hours in there every day when you feed them so they associate you with food. Get closer eat time. Gradually start hand feeding them try touching their head. Eventually they'll warm up and be cuddly and soppy. Shelters and organizations generally don't bother with adult cats because it can take a long time (years in some cases) I'm always glad when I find a video of someone socializing feral adults!

    Yes they are. I showed up to a ranch and all the cats were NOT fixed. But after lots of trapping and lots of trips to the vet all 60 of them are spayed and neutered. There have been no kittens on the ranch for almost 6 years. Spay and neuter---tell everyone you know. :-)

    We have 6 cats over at my moms work, 9 including the ones that live around the place and come to just relax sometimes. There is a mom cat, 3 kittens, and another mom cat with her teenage son Cheddar. The mom cat with the 3 kittens is Momma cat, and she is the sweetest cat ever, we think she used to live with humans. She had 4 kittens, but one got hit by a car :(. This made us go and get all the cats except the cats that come and go spayed and neutered. The orange tom cat Cheddar was the one that started it all, he always came up to people as a kitten and is always seeking the loving of humans.

    there was a calico cat that was obbsesed with me. she would follow me and wait near my back gate and my front door for me, and one day I saw her laying in an overturned flower pot with a white and gray kitten with blue eyes. then my dad almost hit her other kittens. he stopped and I looked over the dash board and saw 3 little calico kittens scurrying away to hide under a bush with their mom. I haven't seen her since (that happened 3 years ago)
