Nice video and explanation. What I don't understand is why can't I utilize the multiple cameras that are already built into my 2018 Audi Q5 instead of having to add an additional one or two more cameras? Obviously Immleman's suggestions for software upgrades are essential.
I had a UTR v2.0 installed in my e-tron by Maidstone Audi.The e-tron specific wiring loom ordered Feb 1 arrived at the end of June. Installation was done over two days, and is very neat with no visible wires. Both cameras are 4k, 2560 x 1440. The supplied µSD card is 32 GB. There were no installation issues.
One last thing to put your mind at rest: Once I have the footage, I will take the link away and won't publish any of it without (a) sanitising it first and (b) getting your consent.
@@immleman I've uploaded a selection. The three parking ones are rear camera. The others are just normal driving. Disappointingly, both cameras have reflections which can be seen. I find downloading files is a bit clunky. Copy to iPhone and then from iPhone to iCloud files. Would be nice if the files could be downloaded from UTR to iCloud directly using iPhone.
Great video! It actually helped me decide to get this option I got the original version (not 2.0) in my VW Taigo and it's recording video fine, but I got 2 major issues neither me nor VW has been able to fix for months: 1. Every time I turn on ignition the utr voice complains "please check rear camera".. but i dont have a rear cam installed. This cant be normal right? 2. The app connects fine and sorta displays events and so on but settings are not saved.. e.g. turned the speaker off it will say saved but next time its back on with the annoying message 3. I cannot apply the firmware update. It says updating forever. I even tried the sd card option in the manual and reset 4. I tried android and ios apps on different phones So maybe I have a dud but it's easily the worst piece of tech I own and the only thing I dont like about the car... which is a shame because the actual hardware looks great and the recordings are fine so it should be a good product. Any ideas appreciated 😂 Thanks
It does sound like a dud to me. Here are a couple of things I would try: 1. A different micro SD card. Settings are stored on the card so that might be a clue. 2. Just slide the front unit off the dock and back on again. 3. Any chance you can take it to the dealer that installed it? Ask them to temporarily swap the front unit with another one. That would tell you if its the unit or the dock/wiring.
Thanks for the reply. I switched to branded SD card already. I also found those settings in a file on the SD card and tried to edit them but camera just ignores it. VW has been pretty useless both online and in dealership although I only mentioned it as part of my service so don't think they looked at it properly. You're right I need to book it in for a full check, just tried to avoid the hassle.. Tried the slide off slide on now to no avail Sorry just to check yours does not say "please check rear camera" every time then 😂 ?
I've no idea! I Had it installed when I bought the car. But I've heard several stories of installation cock-ups by dealers so it's obviously not trivial.

I don't think there's any practical way to do this. With the V1.0 UTR that I had (sold the car last year) I could attach it to my home WIFI but connecting the App disables recording.
Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I suspect the connectivity features got dropped in 1.0. It’s easiest just to pop the sd card out and the live feature is useless unless it’s remote. I guess the Use Case would be a “G Shock” event notifies to the UTR App and you look at Live?

I have no experience or knowledge of the Thinkware 3000 so can't make a recommendation. I currently have a Nextbase 622GW and, whilst the features are great, I've experienced severe reliability problems so couldn't recommend it either.
Hi, really hoping you can help. Just got my car today and it has this installed. If I am in the car then I can view live, watch recordings etc but when I access the app from the house it just will not connect. Am I doing something wrong?
@@graemesoutar768 Not easily. It is possible to configure the UTR to be the client of another WIFI network (such as your home network). But, obviously, this only works when you're in range and when you're out of range you can't reconfigure. I did this when I made my first review. I put a WIFI extender in my garage, made the UTR a client of my home network and shot the pictures of the App from the comfort of my dining room. The simplest option is to take the SD card out and stick it in your computer.
Check the settings under "Mode". The "Parking" setting should set to "Radar + Shock". Also, note that the radar only triggers if you've not been close to the car for a few mins so walk away, wait a couple of minutes then approach the car and it should trigger.
I can only answer for the V1 UTR. There's no useful way to do this. If your car is near a suitable access point then you can configure the UTR to connect to that rather than act as its own access point but the kicker is that the ignition needs to be on!
Audi have just installed this camera, but I wanted it mainly to be able to remotely view it. So is this correct that this cannot be done without the extra router? So far, I can’t even connect. My Apple iPhone to it, and my Audi dealer is struggling to even get an iPhone working on it. ! Every time I try and connect, it says cannot connect to UTR
@@patrickdnb7881 yes you cannot have remote view without the router unless you are sitting in the car with the ignition on which is a waste of time. You cannot connect to the camera using the 5 ghz what I have to do is switch of the wifi on my phone turn off the auto connect on the 5ghz turn on the none 5 ghz then it will connect to the camera but you will not get any alerts as that is the only way we can get it to connect so 99% of the time you are not connected to the camera system.
Hi How can i watch all the recorded videos I wanted to check some incident which happened 3 days ago but cannot see any recorded on camera.. i even tried on PC but cannot see anything 😢
It depends on twol things: whether or not you were driving or parked and whether or not an event file was created. If you were driving and simply saw something that didn't result in a Gshock event then, with the standard microSD card the file will be overwritten after about 20 mins of further driving - this is why I keep banging on about card size! If an event file was created from a Gshock event whilst driving or a radar or Gshock whilst parked, then the file will be safe for months. In the App, view the video gallery, select the tab for Event files and then tick as many as you want around the time of interest. Select Play and the files should be played in order.
I thought that the video would better than my old Nextbase 312GW but it's not. When parked details are blocky and there doesn't appear to be any polarising which I regard as a must have.
Can you see them with the App? I don't have a UTR anymore but I've got a feeling that there might be an option to turn the rear camera off. Can you check this with the App?
@@MichaelBLK OK. So which UTR - 1.0 or 2.0? 1.0 saves the two video streams in the same AVI file whereas, I think, 2.0 creates separate MP4 files for front and rear. Never had a 2.0 version but someone sent me some files that I might still have.
If I bought another Audi then I'd buy another UTR. Most of the shortcomings are in the App and they don't bother me. Other people may not feel the same.
Hi, can you advise how to reset the wi-fi between iPhone and UTR. l had to have the windscreen replaced and when l try to connect it advises password incorrect. Any advice/help would greatly appreciated.
There's a hole labelled "Reset" on the front of the unit and the manual claims that this can be used to reset the WIFI settings to default (password 1234567890). I haven't tried it but I imagine you poke it with a paperclip or similar. You may need to hold it in for several seconds (the manual doesn't say) and you may need to have the ignition switched on. However, before you try this, can I suggest you first try the default password above.
Its a bit expensive no? an off shelf dash cam does the same function and probably better and cheaper. Sure you gotta manage the cables but if you spend 1 hr or so to cable manage it saves you quite a bit of money. Not to mention its reusable across diff vehicles vs audi ones are only usable in audi vehicles.
Yes it's expensive but it looks like the price may have come down a bit since I made this video. A front and rear camera set is now £618.50 as a factory fitted option for an A5. I've just changed my car and had a Nextbase 622GW fitted. All in it was £412.20 so, yes, cheaper than the UTR plus some features that the UTR doesn't have but the Nextbase is missing the UTR's radar which is useful.

@@colinbrough3099 Get them to pair your smartphone to the app. Maidstone Audi did not do this. The technician paired his own phone and told me it worked. With my iPhone it would connect to the UTR wifi but the app would not connect. I discovered that mobile data needs to be turned off. I also have privacy settings turned off. Bluetooth and VPN seem OK to be on.

Hi, I have had an ongoing battle with Audi over the quality of mine fitted by them over 3 years ago. Ver 1.0. In the very small paper user guide there is listed polarised filters x2 ? I’ve none at all. Plus the reflection from dashboard. I have tried every Audi help desk, dealer technical etc for software and firmware updates, none advised. Interested to find you have managed to update, would appreciate help on this. Great video, i agree with all your point especially the app. 40k plus for any Audi and its an appalling interface. Even worse if your a Porsche owner! I used my wife’s Nextbase 322GW in parallel and took both files in to show Audi service, embarrassing to say the least. Also don’t ask them to refit after mounting if you windscreen is smashed, £242 pounds for the 3M double sided tape.
Yes. In its default set-up the UTR broadcasts its own WIFI signal. You connect to it and use the App to view recordings. The other option is to take the SD card out.
@@saintmay1952 Yes, you need to be close or in the vehicle. It should be parked with the ignition on as recording stops when you connect via WIFi. Alternatively, you can pop the micro SD card out and connect it to a computer with an adapter.
@@saintmay1952If you mean as the UTR is recording it, then I doubt you'll be able to do what you want. Remember, the UTR stops recording when you connect the App. You can view the live feed via the App and you MIGHT be able to screen share but the video in the App is only part of the screen so the quality will be low.
Has anyone got this working with an IPhone? It’s been installed by Audi Bolton. But even they can’t get it to connect to my iPhone! It sees the UTR WiFi but just fails. Also how do you view it remotely and use the car finder? Obviously once they finally get it to connect to my phone! So far I’m not impressed. It’s installed but I cannot use the app at all.
The only way I can connect to the utr is by connecting via the low speed Wi-Fi my I phone connects to the MMI using the 5 WI-FI but the camera cannot use that. So I have to go on my Wi-Fi connections turn off the auto connect on the high speed Wi-Fi turn on the auto connect on the low speed Wi-Fi then it will connect to the utr,then I have to reverse the process to reconnect to the MMI. You cannot have remote view without the utr router which you cannot get in the UK if you press the utr router on the app it tells you that. My Audi dealer tried everything to get it to work but that is the only way it will work or as I was told you can view it in the car with the ignition otherwise not.
Hi, what is the max SD card size the UTR supports ? I want to upgrade from the 8GB the car came with but don't know what size to go for - 32, 64,128,256 ?
I haven't tested every card size but it looks to me like 64GB is the practical max. That's the size I have in mine. This gives you up to 256 minutes of drivetime video. It'll probably work with a larger card but I suspect you'll still only get 256 mins.
The Audi software team seem to have no vision. There’s so much capability with the hardware they make, but fall short with user experience and logical features.
I couldn't agree more. The same goes for the in-car SW. What we have is a bunch of separate systems that don't work with each other. I've spent most of my career working at the HW - SW boundary and there's just so much more I would do.
My UTR app will not connect to the Audiutr wifi if engine is off. Help. I’m sitting in the house wanting to connect Audi UTR app. The Audi app connects fine but the UTR app no way.
I'm sorry, but that's just the way it works. With the ignition on, it also stops recording if you connect the App. I'm guessing it's processor power limitation.

It cannot work if the ignition is off basically you can only live view if you are sitting in the car with the ignition on total waste of time

I can't speak to the Nextbase 312GW but I agree that the lack of a polarising filter is a major omission, especially when it's so easy to correct.

When I try view the videos through handphone it always say wifi weak connection and disconnects… I need remove the memory card and play on laptop
If you've got the car's own WIFI hotspot turned on, it could be interfering. If so, try turning it off.

Do I need Wifi to view the live recordings on Android?

@@saintmay1952 Yes, you need to be close or in the vehicle. It should be parked with the ignition on as recording stops when you connect via WIFi. Alternatively, you can pop the micro SD card out and connect it to a computer with an adapter.
@@immleman if I do that with the SD card, would I be able to stream the recording, live, on my phone?
@@saintmay1952If you mean as the UTR is recording it, then I doubt you'll be able to do what you want. Remember, the UTR stops recording when you connect the App. You can view the live feed via the App and you MIGHT be able to screen share but the video in the App is only part of the screen so the quality will be low.

It’s been installed by Audi Bolton. But even they can’t get it to connect to my iPhone!
It sees the UTR WiFi but just fails.
Also how do you view it remotely and use the car finder? Obviously once they finally get it to connect to my phone!

Yes. Mine worked with both an iPhone 6 and my current iPhone 12. Does your phone actually connect to the UTR WiFi?
The only way I can connect to the utr is by connecting via the low speed Wi-Fi my I phone connects to the MMI using the 5 WI-FI but the camera cannot use that.
So I have to go on my Wi-Fi connections turn off the auto connect on the high speed Wi-Fi turn on the auto connect on the low speed Wi-Fi then it will connect to the utr,then I have to reverse the process to reconnect to the MMI.
You cannot have remote view without the utr router which you cannot get in the UK if you press the utr router on the app it tells you that.
My Audi dealer tried everything to get it to work but that is the only way it will work or as I was told you can view it in the car with the ignition otherwise not.
Hi, what is the max SD card size the UTR supports ? I want to upgrade from the 8GB the car came with but don't know what size to go for - 32, 64,128,256 ?
I haven't tested every card size but it looks to me like 64GB is the practical max. That's the size I have in mine. This gives you up to 256 minutes of drivetime video. It'll probably work with a larger card but I suspect you'll still only get 256 mins.
The Audi software team seem to have no vision. There’s so much capability with the hardware they make, but fall short with user experience and logical features.
I couldn't agree more. The same goes for the in-car SW. What we have is a bunch of separate systems that don't work with each other. I've spent most of my career working at the HW - SW boundary and there's just so much more I would do.
This white tape is not very appealing. It would be much better looking if it were black.
It turns out that was my Audi dealer fitting it incorrectly. There's a black panel that should be stuck to the windscreen first.
My UTR app will not connect to the Audiutr wifi if engine is off. Help. I’m sitting in the house wanting to connect Audi UTR app. The Audi app connects fine but the UTR app no way.
I'm sorry, but that's just the way it works. With the ignition on, it also stops recording if you connect the App. I'm guessing it's processor power limitation.
