Editing my latest book: Paragon of Shadow (vlog)

- It's always interesting to see how much authors differ in their approach. For me, most of the labor is in the first draft, while some friends breeze through that part and then spend the most time editing.
My first draft goes to my beta readers without revision. Then I hand it off to my editor for 2-3 rounds of editing, which are usually pretty short. I'm vlogging my way through a typical editing pass for me, which involves fixing only one major issue to bring the end of the book together. The rest is just cleanup, strengthening sentences, and checking for continuity errors.
Part of this comes from having 26 other books under my belt at this point: Paragon of Shadow is number 27, and I promise you editing the first 5 or 6 books was nowhere near this easy!
One benefit of writing a lot of books is that as you get them edited, you learn what your personal writing weaknesses are and can work to improve them. This means I've had a lot of time to strengthen my grammar and sentence clarity, improve my word choices so I get the strongest word the first time, and learn to write without unnecessary filter words that can weaken prose.
That's not to say I get it right every time. You always need some form of editing, because over time, you become blind to your own work. I'm ever grateful for the team of beta readers that help me shape my books into what they are, especially because they aren't scared to tell me when something sucks!
