Tim: I am very sad to hear this news. As a blind guitar player, I cannot use any of the actual instructional material TE has put out, since Truefire is not accessible to me. Tommy's courses also seem to rely heavily on picture and tab, rather than on his own explanation of the mechanics. As such, your tutorials have been the only realistic way that I (and other blind players I have sent them to) could learn TE's material. I find this ironic, since TE himself confessed that he relied so heavily on audio when growing up, I do not know why he would choose to deny this opportunity to others, but anyway. Thank you for all you have done, and I'm sticking around on Patreon for the long ride!

This is such sad news and also understandable. I'm glad you reached out to Tommy's team. After going to many Tommy camps and meeting the man and his team that was the right thing to do. They are good to work with. I'd like to say that I've learned soo much from your videos. Like many Tommy admirers, I've learned quite a few of his songs on my own. But I don't always get all of the important details down. You've shown me those details and have inspired me to work on those songs again. Man, you put a lot of effort into the videos you do and it would be a waste to see them go away. I'm not the kind of guy who pays for stuff that he can get for free but with the amount of effort and good value I get from your content I might have to just sign up for the Pateron thing. Have you thought about perhaps being a guest or 2nd instructor on Tommy's things like the TrueFire channel, etc? Maybe they'll go for that and it might even increase your audience. Tommy uses many instructors at his camps and I've seen other shows and podcasts who introduce additional "hosts" or guest hosts who then become regular instructors.

I bought the song tabs timberland legally From his website and there were many places that were completely incorrect. I was in the middle of learning this song from you and you were a great help to me. I think Tommy should be encouraged to make more accurate materials, and also make video materials to cover what has not been covered as of yet
Hi George! I have no experience with the tabs on Tommy's website, so I can't comment on that. Maybe there is a difference in the source material being used: I base most of my transcriptions on live versions rather than album versions, and it seems as if most people on UA-cam are listening to those live versions as well!
@@TimVanRoy I understand your point about different versions of a song performance. And I agree. But with the song Timberland I’ve only seen and heard the version on the CD and the video. What you teach for that song which is played on the baritone guitar, and I applaud you for using sections of the jumbo guitar tuned down.... it’s really quite unrecognizable and the inaccuracies are very large. If I had not encountered your tutorial on this song and had only gotten the official transcription office site I would’ve had no way really of knowing how the the song is actually to be played. This is probably the exception to the vast majority of very fine transcriptions. But I thought it was worth noting

Hi Tim, must say this came as a shock but it all makes perfect sense and very noble move. Full of respect as it always take courage and strength to do the right thing. Your channel has been one of the greatest things that I picked up since last year, as I've been able to play 3-4 Tommy songs myself now which definitely a dream come true (actually never even seriously dreamt of that before). Hope this will be a stronger start for the future and best wishes. Also really glad the Patron resource will remain as that's my biggest worry watching this video.
Really humble and honest of you to take this road! Congrats on that and I am sure you will find a new path for your channel. Maybe fingerstyle technique tuition “in the style of”? I love Tommy and all he does for young players. He took the time to come and talk to his fans after some shows, including me. I find it very hard to believe that Tommy wouldn't want young players to get excited about playing.

Also a few other surprises that will allow me to (finally) cross over into other artists than just Tommy. Also, parts of each tutorial will be uploaded again but without the tabs. I'm just reaching out to different companies to see if I can find a partner that can sell the tabs/notation to each lesson in a legal way (and in a way that also let's Tommy collect his share of the proceedings). And I really liked going through different versions and compiling the parts I liked best into one version, instead of transcribing 'just" the studio recording. Tim: I am very sad to hear this news. As a blind guitar player, I cannot use any of the actual instructional material TE has put out, since Truefire is not accessible to me. Tommy's courses also seem to rely heavily on picture and tab, rather than on his own explanation of the mechanics. As such, your tutorials have been the only realistic way that I (and other blind players I have sent them to) could learn TE's material. I find this ironic, since TE himself confessed that he relied so heavily on audio when growing up, I do not know why he would choose to deny this opportunity to others, but anyway. Thank you for all you have done, and I'm sticking around on Patreon for the long ride!

This is such sad news and also understandable. I'm glad you reached out to Tommy's team. After going to many Tommy camps and meeting the man and his team that was the right thing to do. They are good to work with.
I'd like to say that I've learned soo much from your videos. Like many Tommy admirers, I've learned quite a few of his songs on my own. But I don't always get all of the important details down. You've shown me those details and have inspired me to work on those songs again. Man, you put a lot of effort into the videos you do and it would be a waste to see them go away.
I'm not the kind of guy who pays for stuff that he can get for free but with the amount of effort and good value I get from your content I might have to just sign up for the Pateron thing.
Have you thought about perhaps being a guest or 2nd instructor on Tommy's things like the TrueFire channel, etc? Maybe they'll go for that and it might even increase your audience. Tommy uses many instructors at his camps and I've seen other shows and podcasts who introduce additional "hosts" or guest hosts who then become regular instructors.

Sometimes it takes a teacher who is not the original musician to provide instruction because they know all the nuances of learning a song that may have not come as natural as it did to the creator.

Thanks Ravi! Again (and I will reply this to every message implicating this): Tommy really isn't the problem, but big rights holders like Universal and Warner. Even with Tommy's permission they still wouldn't let go of their stake in the game... There is no personal sentiment involved, it's "just business". But it seems a compromise is possible, and I'll be reuploading parts again but without the tabs onscreen!

This is terrible news, I was just in the middle of learning endless road. You and Tommy were truly the reason why I picked up my guitar again after months of neglect. Hopefully things will change. But if it's available on Patreon, I will pay the money and support you!
I bought the song tabs timberland legally From his website and there were many places that were completely incorrect. I was in the middle of learning this song from you and you were a great help to me. I think Tommy should be encouraged to make more accurate materials, and also make video materials to cover what has not been covered as of yet
Hi George! I have no experience with the tabs on Tommy's website, so I can't comment on that. Maybe there is a difference in the source material being used: I base most of my transcriptions on live versions rather than album versions, and it seems as if most people on UA-cam are listening to those live versions as well!
@@TimVanRoy I understand your point about different versions of a song performance. And I agree. But with the song Timberland I’ve only seen and heard the version on the CD and the video. What you teach for that song which is played on the baritone guitar, and I applaud you for using sections of the jumbo guitar tuned down.... it’s really quite unrecognizable and the inaccuracies are very large. If I had not encountered your tutorial on this song and had only gotten the official transcription office site I would’ve had no way really of knowing how the the song is actually to be played. This is probably the exception to the vast majority of very fine transcriptions. But I thought it was worth noting

Hi Tim, must say this came as a shock but it all makes perfect sense and very noble move. Full of respect as it always take courage and strength to do the right thing. Your channel has been one of the greatest things that I picked up since last year, as I've been able to play 3-4 Tommy songs myself now which definitely a dream come true (actually never even seriously dreamt of that before). Hope this will be a stronger start for the future and best wishes. Also really glad the Patron resource will remain as that's my biggest worry watching this video.

Hi David! All of these issues have been resolved in the meantime, to that extent that Tommy "thanked" me last week by doing an interview for my channel. I'll post it in the coming week. Everything I ever did is all on Patreon, full access starts at €3/month!
I love Tommy and all he does for young players. He took the time to come and talk to his fans after some shows, including me. I find it very hard to believe that Tommy wouldn't want young players to get excited about playing.

Hey Tim.! I always worried about the possibility of you having to take down the tutorials, and now the time has come. I've learnt so much from these tutorials, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. These have been so much fun to work with. I think its wonderful that you went and reached out to Tommy's team and saved yourself the grief and trouble that you might have hit later down the road. It shows a lot about your respect towards him, and I think Tommy, and most importantly you yourself will be very pleased that you did so too down the road.
I'm really looking forward to what you have in store next after this turn of events. I don't know how likely it is that you will continue with tutorials of whole arrangements and songs (which would be *AMAZING*), but maybe tutorials on fingerstyle techniques and examples of where they are used for context (idk just thinking out loud lol)...
All this aside, the fact that you considered what it might be like in the next few years, really cheers me up because now I know that you'll be continuing on UA-cam for a lot more time to come, and I can't wait to see what you're going to do next.!

Thanks for that amazing comment Rohit! There are a few things ready to go right now, like the series on starting out with a thumbpick. Also a few other surprises that will allow me to (finally) cross over into other artists than just Tommy.
Also, parts of each tutorial will be uploaded again but without the tabs. I'm just reaching out to different companies to see if I can find a partner that can sell the tabs/notation to each lesson in a legal way (and in a way that also let's Tommy collect his share of the proceedings).
More news really soon ;-)

Most of them will porbably pose the same problem. Because it's really not Tommy that will be the problem, but rights holders (like Warner and Universal) in general. But it seems I'll be able to find a compromise and reupload soon, only without the tabs on screen!

Hi Rick! I think Tommy probably already has people doing that for him. And I really liked going through different versions and compiling the parts I liked best into one version, instead of transcribing 'just" the studio recording. Let's get things back up and running first and then see what the future brings ;-)

Hi, Tim! On the one hand it’s a bad news, on the other hand it is the reason to find something new. With your skills, personality and charisma i’m sure you’ll get over it. Personally, i’ll stay with you. There’s a great deal of guitar songs in the world and if it’s not Tommy’s song there will be others. I think everything you play will great. Life goes on, man!
