    Saddleback was a great track and so many of the top pros would practice and race there. I remember getting tons of autographs from guys there.

    Very cool! I bought one of these CR250s as soon as they were available. It was nearly impossible to get a pair of Fox Air Shox at the beginning of the season due to overwhelming demand. I got mine with one of those friend-of-a-friend deals.

    That was my favorite track to race on. Indian dunes was a good track to practice on.
    One day in winter at Saddleback after a good rain, there was a huge mud hole in that hollow that led to the downhill before the ski jump on the other side of the valley. Well my friend was taking pictures of that area and got a shot of a guy doing a flying "W" over the bars after his bike just stopped from the mud. He submitted the photo to Dirt Bike Magazine for their last page "Crash and Burn" photo and got it. "Blurry Photo by Joel Mayer" it said. We were maybe 16 at that time. Pretty cool for him. That was maybe in 1972. I was riding an older 1969 Bultaco Pursang then. I started my racing a year later on my CZ 250.

    Man that kidney belt sure brings back old memorys
    I raced 250 kaws back in the days before the single shock rears and you needed that belt !!

    • @martyk934
      @martyk934 Рік тому

      Down Under (Australia) we never had "kaws", but the kidney belt was definitely mandatory PPE when racing my Suzuki RMs.

    Looks like Saturday Saddleback, 250 Intermediate. I could very well be in that race.

      Don't know but that was my class in 77 on YZ250. What was it 40 45 minute motos, just remember summer was hot dry hard and slippery. Got hurt that year ACL on left knee I was 17 I think, I stopped racing bikes after that. Got a foot long scar on the side of my knee but I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm 64 now and miss those days.

    I watched part of this hoping to see M Tripes. It's like no footage of ANY of his races were ever submitted to the tube. I've got to admit that watching Smith was uninspiring.

    Back then, the tracks were mostly hardpack. And if there was rain, they would get really slippery.
