- This is an edited down version of my first moto movie shot on 8mm film. I took a Film Class in High School and made this for a final project with my buddy Pete Kier. We just spent a day at Saddleback Park and shot mostly pros racing on the main track. Then shot Cookie the Wonder Dog on the front TT track and a few guys roosting up the Matterhorn! The original film was way too painful to watch, so I cut it down from 15 min to just 4 min 45 sec. If any of you can identify any of the riders, let me know? Hey, it got Pete and I an A-. We must have brown nosed that teacher big time.
Great to find this old footage, I worked on the Saddleback Park Patrol. I used to have to chase this kid off of the front TT track, he'd pretend he didn't see you at closing & was HARD to catch on his little Honda Mini Bike his name was Jeff Ward. AND, now I can show my daughter the Matterhorn that I climbed in 71' on a Bill Butler 9 ported Yamaha DT1 with a K&G engineering modified frame (that became the YZ). I wonder how many of Y'all I saw when I worked there... Fun Times!
Super footage. Thanks for sharing!
The good old days when you could ride 1/2 hr from home.
beautiful

Thanks for all the great comments and so glad I could bring back some good memories. Miss Saddleback so much!
Do you have video or pictures from the baja bug races..
My dad raced I'm a few of them in what I believe he called it the poor man's class. I lost all the pictures of him in his baja bug's racing there. Late 70s ish I guess. I was so little I don't remember it but ths pictures I have list throughout the years were awesome !
@@dubbleu.b.b.7392 wish I did but I didn't start shooting in Baja until the late 90s.
No audio track on our 8mm film back then. I put the music in for youtube. It's a song from Sound Ideas music library.
Mark, thank you for the well done video. I have to tell you that I am the rider on the bike #49. That was my CMC number in 1974 or 75 I think 75. The bike was built by Bob Oliver and had a Penton frame and a Honda 125 motor. Cool bike. I could tell you a lot about all of that. The other rider that I am chasing I think is Brad Hadley, not sure about the first name, but pretty sure that was his last name. I am fairly sure this was an intermediate race in the early spring. Thank you again.
I remember my friend and I were on our bikes looking down from the top of the Matterhorn and a guy came up on a Honda Elsinore and asked us to move aside please, we did and he accelerated and jumped from the top! It was so crazy! It was Gaylon Mosier! I'd never seen anything like that back in the mid 70s.
Wow… took me back to my glory days (at least in MY mind) of Saddleback.. For me, it was the happiest place on earth, not the other place with the Matterhorn. I'm guessing that, by the lay out of the track (exactly like I last remember it) this was around 1973 or 74. By the way, my Father, Ed Radlauer wrote a childrens' book about John and Kookie called "Motorcycle Mutt." I had the great pleasure of them coming to our house in La Habra Heights and riding my little Motocross track on our property for some pictures from the book.. Nice work and "thanks for the memories,," Dan Radlauer
Cool old school video!.. i raced there on my yz 80 in like '75...rip Jim West
HS class 75 , The place to be in my youth !! )) Bonzi drop in , lol CMC forever ! Thanks )))
I loved racing on the TT track with my '71 Kawasaki Green Streak! Not a great bike for motocross but pulled crazy throttle at 8000rpm.. haha
Great video Mark. Seems like only yesterday me and my pals were roaming the park having a blast in the early 70s. You may have the only video of the Matterhorn! All you vintage riders out there with old 8MM of the SoCal motocross and desert races should do us old timers a favor and get them posted on You Tube.
So cool 🌪
Nice...Thanks for the memories...
No I don't ride any more. In fact, my last race was at Mammoth in 1977, it is a day that is etched in my memory. But, all that is good in my life has occurred since I made that decision. I will have to get my old scrap book from my mom and do some watching and thinking. I will let you know when I know more. How did you digitize this 8mm movie? I have about 30 8mm films from 1972-1976 and won't to digitize them and edit it down. I haven't heard from or about Pete for years either.
Hey John, So glad you found yourself in my video. I went to school with Cliff Lett and remember you from the races. I didn't get to the pro level till about 1980 and even then could only hang on the shorter night races. You were one of the guys I always looked up to, thanks!
Awesome!!!! Thanks for sharing it!
Mark, wow I wasn't sure anyone looked up to me, but thank you for the compliment. Have you had any contact with Pete Kier? He was my neighbor and I haven't had any contact with him since we were in our early 20's. If you want me to identify others in your video, let me know. I do know that #903 was Alan Smith and if I was to get my old scrap book from my mom I might be able to identify more.
No problem
Great stuff!
Very cool
John, I remember doing a search for Pete when I posted the movie because he was co producer. But, no I have not heard from him in many years. We became friends the last year of high school and then just lost touch. If you happen to find him, please forward my info to him. And yes, would be interested to know who all was in the movie. Please give me a list and I will update youtube with that info. BTW - Do you still ride?
John, I loved racing Mammoth. My last race in Mammoth was with the OTHG in the Expert class. Had the overall in the bag, on the last lap my clutch went away and bike just rolled to a stop. Pushed it over the finnish line for a 3rd overall. I've still got the "addiction" to moto but have backed way off from competion. Just try to keep it fun and balanced with the rest of what life has to offer. I own a video production co. Send me a direct email to thrust1@cox.net for film transfer quoat.
