Mary Black one of Eires best ambassadors . Bless her
We were privileged to attend Mary Black's concert at the Great American Music Hall on O'Farrell St. in San Francisco a while back. She informed us that this was her last concert; that she was retiring from the concert circuit. We will miss you sorely, Mary Black! I went to your every concert whenever you came here. (And your daughter Róisín O did a set with you one time. That was a grand concert indeed! Perhaps she'll come through the area again.) The day after the concert, there was an all day rather eclectic musical festival on the 1890's ferryboat, the Eureka, out on the Hyde Street Pier (the San Francisco Maritime Nat'l Historic Park at Fisherman's Wharf, with turn-of-the-century historic ships floating in the Bay). You were with you brothers, Michael and Shay. Such an extraordinary family!
Beautiful rendering of an absolutely fabulous song by Richard Thompson.
Short but sweet...voice, appearance...pretty much checks all the boxes as usual for her. Transatlantic Session 1 is still my very favorite.
Glorious song. Great version by Mary with Declan and others back in 1992. Richard and Linda, Bonnie and Paul Brady do very creditable versions and are all worthy. No doubt other fine versions exist, too. I see no point in arguing which is "best". As Shakespeare said "comparisons are odorous" ;). Let 100 flowers bloom.
Well said! Everybody will have their favourite versions of course but there's no way of finding the 'best'. I have heard several versions of this song and I like them all. Its just a beautiful song.
@@BoingBB I certainly wouldn't quibble with your estimate though I would like to add that Allison Krauss does a more than creditable version
Allison Krauss does a nice version as well.
Comparisons are odious not oderous!
I just discovered Mary today. Thank GOD!!!!
I didn't find Mary Black's music until 2016 when my brothers, sisters, and spouses went to Ireland. Her voice is beautiful!!
I only became aware of Mary Black in 1989 when she came out with the incredibly mysterious song "Columbus" by Noel Brazil. The second verse begins "See how the cormorant swoops and dives..." I played the song for a friend because I had not idea what a cormorant is. I didn't know it was that bird we'd see diving into the Atlantic off the coast of South Carolina every summer.
I am awed that Spotify's editors put my tune "Whisk Me Away" alongside Mary's on the playlist "This is Mary Black." I feel so incredibly lucky and blessed to be "sitting next to her" musically.
I agree about the Irish, they do know how to sing a song. She's AMAZING!!!
This is the best rendition of this song.Long live Mary Black&Ireland!
No one sings this song like Mary!!! What a beautiful voice. She puts so much feeling into it, she makes me cry.
Except Linda Thompson!
Bonnie Raitt?
Apart from Bonnie Raitt, Linda Thompson, Alison Krauss, even Richard Thompson, David Gilmour, etc. etc., to name a few who I think sing it better. It’s that vibrato that drives me mad.
I think her vibrato is spot-on with this song. She gave a nearly flawless performance of this one and it gave me chills.
HOWEVER!!! You are SO on-point with vibrato. I am so sick and tired of hearing people just massacre a song with ridiculous attempts at vibrato (Stevie Nicks sounds like a freaked out goat, Madonna with whatever the hell she does, etc.). As for your other statement regarding David Gilmour's, et al, versions, I totally have to agree there, too. David's voice isn't flawless but the emotion and his interpretation are just simply incredible. As a matter of fact, that's how I first heard this song! I just happened to stumble upon it one night and it did something to me inside...to the core of my being. He NAILED IT. I must confess, though, that I also believe she did, too, with her interpretation. So far, though, not even the original compares with David's version (but that's strictly MY OPINION and I realize that many will disagree vehemently with me). Well done.
Linda Thompson is perfect in this song, not possible to surpass. Still some good covers are there on youtube, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Kirsten Braaten Berg, Alison Krauss, this one here, and not least David Gilmour
Stop searching. It simply does NOT get any better than this.
She is most definitely a gift from God. She has such a pure voice, incredible richness, many layers to her voice. Her passion, compassion, and sincerity in her voice is so profound and truly remarkable.
Saw her several months ago in Atlanta. Still a great talent.
What a completely soul wrenching rendition.
You said a mouthful !
Lovely rendition.
No one can sing like Mary. she has the best voice ever!
THIS. The reason I bought my first Mary Black CD. THIS.
Ha! Me, too.
I was lucky enough to have seen Richard and Linda Thompson do this live over 30 year ago it's always stayed with me, but fair dues to Mary she did a fine job of it.
My favorite Mary Black live song was always her version of "Song for Ireland" always breathtaking
Mary always makes a song her own - and then gives it to us in unmatched perfection using the beautiful instrument of her voice. There is nothing more calming, more healing than listening to Mary sing - and I am so grateful that Ireland has shared her with the world. We love her in the U.S. and I had the privilege of hearing her sing in Atlanta a week ago.
Will forever adore this wonderful classic song... so good to see online, here.. after all this time.. love you Mary, love your brothers, and what they've done for the "KEANE" family in SF, every st. pats day, in the SF bay.
My heart is sobbing...so very poignant !
Thank you Mary and thank you Richard Thompson what a lovely song
This old house is falling down around my ears
I'm drowning in a river of my tears
When all my will is gone, you hold me sway
I need you at the dimming of the day
You pull me like the moon pulls on the tide
You know just where I keep my better side
What days have come to keep us far apart?
A broken promise or a broken heart
Now all the bonnie birds have wheeled away
I need you at the dimming of the day
Come the night, you're only what I want
Come the night, you could be my confident
I see you on the street in company
Why don't you come and ease your mind with me?
I'm living for the night we steal away
I need you at the dimming of the day
Oh I need you at the dimming of the day
Richard is a genius!
What a beautiful song! Cannot beat a bit of Mary Black. Pulls at the heart strings
This song by Richard Thompson is absolutely beautiful!
Absolutely-with Linda too!
For me, of them all, Igor this song it's got to be Linda..
She sings quietly, effortlessly, with depth and real feeling.
❤ beautiful
Beautiful Mary thank you for this equally beautiful song🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I wonder if anyone else puts in as much emotion to their songs as Mary Black. Everything she sings seems so heartfelt. And, of course, she has such a lovely voice and her charming Irish lilt!
Mary Black is my heroine.
My wife is Margaret Walsh and we love Mary Black

Wonderful. I love pretty well every version of this song I've ever heard. They each interpret the song in different ways. I'd love to hear what Maura O'Connell would bring to the mix.

Omg she's amazing.
One of of the finest interpretations of a classic.
Thank you Mary Black. Yal's treatment of this song is fabulous. You and your band put together a great version. Again, thank you. Very moving.
Nice cover of a great song that lends itself to many interpretations. Much as I like other versions, especially Bonnie Raitt's, Mary's irresistible Irish accent is perfect for it. Bravo. I think I will listen again.
quite stunning
How great to have been there, near the front.

Gorgeous.
I think that is the most beautiful rendition of this song I've ever heard! (meaning no offense to the other artists that I love also)
Only one of the best living guitar players. Tommy!!
Never heard Mary sing. But I think she did a great job.
To me Mary Black's version of Richard Thompson's classic song is the finest out there. This live version is an excellent example. Such a moving performance...
This was a lovely cover of the wonderful Richard & Linda Thompson song, sung by Mary. I'd invite anyone to check out the original too. 🙋♂
I'm in Australia, pity we don't have talent, such as this!!!!!!

Wonderful version of an incredibly moving song. Thanks for posting it!

@asengupta100 This was the best version up until 2008, when AJ Lee sang it at a wedding, and it was upleaded onto UA-cam. AJ was only 9 at the time, and I have never heard a more naturally gifted singer. The complete lack of artifice in her version is so perfect it leaves one breathless and weeping every time it's played.
How come there’s so many views but only 1.4k likes.
Amazing
Brilliant
Lovely
She sings as naturally as she breathes.
Уважаемая, Мэри! Сегодня купил в Украине случайно Вашу пластинку...Сегодня узнал о Вас !!! У Вас чудесный голос !!!

@asengupta100 I've always loved Mary Black's singing. I have lots of her music. She knows how to wring the emotion from a song. But I like AJ Lee's version a bit better because she was not trying to pump emotion out, she was just singing with perfect innocence and perfect technique. If you get the chance, listen to how AJ turns, 'You know just where I keep my better si-i-i-i-i-i-iiiide...' into a rising series of 7 notes, instead of adding 'Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh--ooohhh'... after the phrase. Magical.
She changes the melody considerably from the original but in this case not for the better some of the notes she changes are the ones which define the song and give it the tension it needs. Still a great version.
