I would have cried as well. This literally broke the barrier between fashion and art. It is THE #1 iconic moment in fashion history from one of its greatest designers with one of the greatest models of all time. Shalom really was destined for this McQueen moment. MIND YOU -- this entire thing was UNREHEARSED. She impov'd everything.
Mmm. The unveiling of Dior’s New Look in 1947 is probably more “iconic” (how I hate the modern overuse of that word) though this is up there. The New Look shaped the course of fashion over the next decade. This is brilliant but no one was walking around with spray painted trapeze dresses for the next decade...
I love how she initially seems to be afraid and trying to shield herself. Then when, that which she feared happens she gives herself over to it. When it is accomplished, she seems to "own" it, get off the turntable (hamster wheel?) and accept applause for the wonderful piece of art.
Even more amazing she didn't get to rehearse it. She flew in on the redeye and was simply told to stand on the platform and that it would rotate and the spray-painting would happen. She was amazing. So was he… Breathtaking. Very much missed.
DeMarcus Kinkle i agree. I'm still watching the older collections and his themes carried out to todays fashion. The drama of his fashion with a message is utterly amazing.
Imo Iris Van Herpen is continuing his legacy. She worked for him for years. She's continuing on the path of combining new and on-the-edge technologies with fashion just as McQueen was doing. She's brilliant.
I definitely see that Coperni was inspired by this masterpiece but I still think it’s pretty different. I don’t see why people are complaining about the inspo. Both dresses are beautiful and are works of art!
Same! I was looking for this video to explain how the Corperni show piece was like taking this moment into the present and future to someone and I am glad I'm in good company! No need for complaints, nothing in fashion isn't built on what came before.
And he actually just copied Manel Torres. In 2010 he created this material and made videos/Ted talks about it. "A Spanish fashion designer has developed the world's first spray-on clothing that can be worn, washed and worn again. Manel Torres joined forces with scientists at Imperial College London to invent the spray, which forms a seamless fabric on contact with the body. Torres took 15 minutes to spray a T-shirt onto a male model in a demonstration today, ahead of his spring/summer collection at the Science in Style fashion show in London next week."
I think it’s more so that the other designers pieces were worked on for months, choosing everything from the perfect fabric to the perfect design and style of dress or outfit.
The way Shalom Harlow is moving and her facial expressions remind me of when Cinderella’s dress is being torn apart by her step sisters. RIP to the ultimate genius: Lee Alexander McQueen
He's a genius. Artistry from a different perspective that cannot be used in words from the model's perfect facial expression and crude painting. This was too perfect a performance to have just come out of the head of a young man in his 20s in 1997, and it is unlikely that such an impact will come out in the future.I was moved to tears for the first time when I saw this video, and this is why I still respect and love Alexander McQueen the most 12 years after his death. I loved you, i love you, i will love you Alexander mcqueen. Rest in piece.
Shalom Harlow's Artistry was Amazing! I love her so much! She was born to be the Haute Couture Queen! This will be an iconic scene in the whole modeling industry!
I've never seen this before. It's fantastic. One of the best examples of performance art I have seen. So much of it is often just pretentious nonsense. This was perfect in every way. Especially the human-machine boundary challenging aspect. I only looked it up as it was mentioned on BBC 6 Music today...
Pure creative genius and fashion as art and performance ……the robots were balletic, graceful, menacing and rapacious. The dress was utter simplicity and perfection in its scale. The graffiti the ultimate symbol of modernity and the explosion of applause by the audience, rapturous. And of course the model was an actress, not just a model. Perfection.
Not even really trained as either though I don't think (only actually trained in ballet) that's what's so amazing it's just her instinctively knowing exactly how to play the part every move every look unrehearsed even!
Technically speaking Alexander McQueen was the best Fashion Designer in the history of Fashion. Artistically one of the best if not up there with Yves Saint Laurent,Coco Chanel and Schiaparelli. He is missed and I'am totally playing the stories Lee would have made all these years. I believe that Lee thought he was done with fashion and had basically shown all he could. It was time for him to go.
❤ just sit with the mesmerising theatrical unfolding of an iconic moment in history ❤ There's no denying THAT people ❤ Still to thus day I ❤ this moment in time ❤
Ngl it's just my opinion , but i don't know why ppl like this thing so much , literally it just looks like some gurl walking like they hit their head somewhere... What's so special or charming about this??? That painting? It looks like someone a shit , that walk? Zombie , that acting? What's point of this???
It looks like the way I'm joking around with my friends by using my wide blanket and a few of my belts. We were acting like we are on the runway or presenting our country for Miss Universe.
Hi. The company I work for is planning an exhibition post the pandemic. We have 2 projection map architectural models that we are projecting content on to. One of the models has snippets of this content that I have edited and done some post production on, would you mind us using your content if we credit you in the exhibition?
impresionante. dijo la modelo Shalom Harlow en una entrevista: "I mean, there was barely even a fitting,” she says, voice hushed. “I got off a flight, and we made sure the belt around the top of the dress fit. I was told that I was going to be on a podium that spun, with robot arms that were going to spray-paint me. And that was it. I did not know how long I was going to be spinning. I didn’t know the velocity of the spin. I didn’t know the music piece. I didn’t know anything. I just walked out there, and responded to the elements.”...."Se sintió como si acabara de caer un rayo. Era eléctrico. La gente se volvió loca y la gente todavía está respondiendo a ese momento, 20 años después”.
Most of Lee Alexander McQueen's work is very classical and sophisticated. You wouldn't be saying that if you actually knew anything about McQueen. Modern art can be either terrible or brilliant, but I believe that this piece is simply an "artistic statement" within fashion.
Credit to the model, she played the part perfectly. The way she was walking around was so captivating, it all came together beautifully.
Bukurije Berisha Shalom Harlow…
Shalom was one of the great 90's models!
She’s a former ballerina so she knows how to move and perform
I also think was a little dissy aha
you mean she walked like drunk

Perfect model, beautiful music, genius designer.... I would have cried if I was on the audience.
for real
I stopped breathing the moment the robots started spraying
not too sure about the beautiful music
Why to cry?

Piece of Art??? 🤪

Shalom Shalom Shalom. She was above and beyond in every way, utterly fascinating. Never seen anyone like her before or since.

I get chills when watching this. Alexander McQueen body of work was complex and thought provoking.

This was the inspiration for a Greece's next top model concept
Όντως
Nah it was the inspo for the first challenge of drag race season 4

I must admit the colours we used were better 😂

Alexander McQueen was light years ahead of time ! Truly the greatest to EVER do it& will never be duplicated !

Red would have been disastrous on this dress. It would make her look like its that time of the month for her. The colors are perfect.
