I always seem to prefer the instrumental versions to Akira Yamaoka's stuff. They always come off far more creepier when they don't have vocals to them.
+Rusty Valve I agree. This one was the scariest SH game in my book. The game just becomes more and more intense the farther you get into it. There's less and less comfort in the game as the apartment that you might have used as your safe haven becomes scarier from the hauntings and.the secrets it has holding from you. The people you meet turning into ghosts. The ghosts that cannot be killed in any circumstance. The murderer hunting you down across the worlds as the game progresses. To me it ended up being so intense that the game itself actually became uncomfortable to play, but it made the ending all worth it. While on the 2nd, 3rd, Homecoming and Downpour SH games (the games in the series I've played) they seem to become less and less scary as it progresses as you become more skilled in the combat mechanics. They still have some interesting plots, but the intensity wanes down quite a lot unlike SH4 to me.
If only I could explain what happened... I was in Henry’s apartment. I was playing the game hadn’t slept in 4 days or eaten in for days I was having auditory hallucinations, sounded like shepherds Glenn in homecoming outside the apartment. I tried to hard to keep my eyes open. I drifted off and it felt like I was falling through the TV I had just bought. I woke up in room 302 and was there briefly, I assume unconsciously of course. I wake up back here in reality and I’m missing almost a week. My phone blew up my with messages everyone wondering where I went all week, including the place I work. I didn’t want to leave that world. I want to go back. I’ve been seeing birds and things that aren’t there at work and my sense of reality is fading. I embrace any changes I might see I pray for the chance to slip through reality I can see right through myself
You lie, silent there before me. Your tears, they mean nothing to me, The wind howling at the window, the love you never gave, I give to you, Really don't deserve it, but now, there's nothing you can do. So sleep, in your only memory of me, my dearest mother... Here's a lullaby to close your eyes. [Goodbye] It was always you that I despised. I don't feel enough for you to cry, [oh well] Here's a lullaby to close your eyes, [Goodbye], [Goodbye], [Goodbye], [Goodbye]. So insignificant, sleeping dormant deep inside of me, are you hiding away lost, under the sewers, maybe flying high, in the clouds? perhaps you're happy without me... So many seeds have been sown in the field, And who could sprout up so blessedly, If I had died I would have never felt sad at all, You will not hear me say 'I'm sorry' where is the light, wonder if it's weeping somewhere? Here's a lullaby to close your eyes, Goodbye It was always you i despised. I don't feel enough for you to cry, oh well, Here's a lullaby to close your eyes, Goodbye, Goodbye Goodbye Goodbye Here's a lullaby to close your eyes, Goodbye It was always you I despised. I don't feel enough for you to cry, oh well, Here's a lullaby to close your eyes, Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye. Here's a lullaby to close your eyes, Goodbye It was always you that I despised. I don't feel enough for you to cry, oh well, Here's a lullaby to close your eyes. Goodbye. Here's a lullaby to close your eyes. Goodbye It was always you that I despised. I don't feel enough for you to cry, oh well, Here's a lullaby to close your eyes. Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye.
this is the most unique and experimental game from Team Silent. This piece of music is my favourite, tied with Theme of Laura (Silent Hill 2). They are music I can always come home to.
This was the best theme out of any of the SH games in my opinion. This was also the best SH. It induced pure psychological terror. If SH4 was made today, it'd be a AAA masterpiece, giving Resident Evil 7 a run for its money. Speaking of which...could you imagine this game remade from the ground up for VR? HO-LY SHIT SNACKS.
Oh, I believe it. I'm planning on replaying it soon myself. Something about this Silent Hill game has caused it to have a more profound impact on me than any other horror game. Possibly any piece of media ever. I love all of the original Silent Hill titles, but this one really stuck.
I wonder how they made the sounds in the beginning of this song. Some kind of deep flutes, mixed with a bass or violin? It's very unsettling. It has a melody to it. It's a music, yet its not. Sounds like a forsaken dead place. Weirdly echoey and disharmonic. The rest of the song is very melancholic and pleasant to listen to even, at least the melody. But the beginning, it's... Really something.
It is one of the themes that I liked the most from the original Silent Hill saga. The incredible voice, the piano sound and the choirs give you a certain peace; but the sounds of the keyboard and the drums are weird and give that feeling of bewilderment because it is not normal for them to be there. A work of art in every sense of the word, a letter of vindication and liberation that you don't know if it's good or bad, you just feel it. Melancholy would be the word with which I would define it. I don't know if there is an official 'why' of the song, however, the beauty of this type of song is that you can give it whatever interpretation you want and it would still make sense. Yamaoka and his muse McGlynn do beautiful work as always. The choruses are sublime and the instrumentation is unique for the kind of game it's made for. It is definitely a song that has deserved its recognition by old and new generations.
gosebumbs!!!!!!! from neck to spine.. i could cry and laught at the same time.. cry for the meanings and feeling wich are connected to me and this song.. i love it.. but also i cant listen to the end.. cause it breaks my sould my heart and myself into countless pieces!!..
It's like this theme conveys a message. "Look how things are dramatically falling in place for your inevitable death(like Cynthia). It's all destined."
Need to get myself a Playstation 2 along with this game so i can play it again, i remember playing it whenever i was able to in job corps' gaming building (or at least the one i went to had a gaming building where the students could go play video games)
I personally prefer no vocals in Akira Yamaoka's music, mainly because I feel like the instrumental is genius and already captures the atmosphere really well. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's vocals feel like a distraction from the instrumental, I feel like her vocals are a little too strong. It doesn't work really well inside the game, it even feels awkward at some points. Also I just really don't like McGlynn because of her behaviours
Severely underrated game.
I agree
One of these days would love to play the game.
Not for me, then.

@@stnorocwzo yeah, with vocal its sad and dark and without vocal is more sad, dark and horrifying.
Our DM used to use this instrumental all the time in D&D for very dark segments, it was so fucking powerful.
This is my favorite Silent Hill game.
Silent Hill 3 it was quite a journey this one felt completely different imo from sh2 and 3
The purest horror game in the series. Gave no relief whatsoever at no point, growing more intense with the story.

Same here, even the intro scared me.
The demo alone frightened me, and that was just the subway level.
How can a track seething with hatred and loneliness feel so serene. Like the voices in the room sing to their counterpart within me.

instrumental sounds amazing
