I personally much rather have a classic mk3 cortina parked outside (if I could afford one), than that rather bloated electric suv thing. If you really want a Skoda get an Octavia or Superb, I have a rather nice top spect Skoda superb mk2.Keep up the good work Pete! 👍

That Skoda will never get to be as old as the cortina! Not a single modern car will last long enough to be a classic car in the future.

The comparisons in costs of ownership between 2022 and 1972 are fascinating, and bears out what I’ve been thinking for a while - we get better value out of cars now - however, we are all more indebted than ever, with much larger mortgages, credit card debts and many more outgoings. The current cost of living squeeze is hard work, but so far, nowhere near as hard as it got in the mid 70s. Worth remembering when complaining about not being able to afford a second foreign holiday, or a mid-week trip to Nando’s!

In Australia we got the 250 strait 6 with 4 speed manual or 3 speed auto. It had a really cool power bulge on the bonnet and went like the clappers.

A V6 is a minimum and a given geoff in oz or the septic isle as you or the yanks dont settle for anything less and before i get cried down cortinas were found in north america i have seen one in a museum in canada saying they were sold there and i saw at least 2 on the roads in the new york and philly areas inthe mid 80s.

I remember my Dad rebuilding a 1600 crossflow with the block still in the car. Head and sump off and pistons out. New rings, head cleaned up and valves re-seated. New big end bearings and a gasket set for the rebuild of course. It came to a halt on Sutton Bank in North Yorkshire. A landie tow to the top where my Dad found that the accelerator cable had come loose. Other than that it never missed a beat.
I loved that Mark 3. Best family car we ever had.

Nah...gimme that Cortina over anything on today's market. I have driven quite a few late model rentals and what strikes me the most about all of them is how _relieved_ I feel to slip behind the wheel of my Morris Elite - _real_ steering feel, positive switches and gearshift, whining gearbox, fuss free vinyl seats, horn toots and waves from passers-by. 😊
EDIT: 'Ah yes - _pheromones!_ The spray on love scent for inadequate males who find it impossible to attract women!' 😂

Keep the crossflow (711m?) or go electric. To put a pinto to a crosflow gearbox you need to use a cortina 1.6gt cutch plate.

I don't know what kind of penetrating oil you were using but there is an American penetrating oil called Kroil. This stuff will even creep up hill on frozen bolts. It will creep into areas as small as 1 millionth of an inch to break the surface tension of stuck bolts. But I have found that when penetrating oils wont work, on stuck engines, white vinegar will do it

    long time no see
it doesn't matter now, but a fully charged battery, good clean battery leads + your charger would of provided way more torque to that motor than just a charger, you could hear your charger going into overload mode. 1600 friction plate has smaller splines than 2L, but there is a ford clutch that will fit, i've just forgot which one. going on my holidays soon, to my uncle's, he has a 74 2L estate, not run for at least 20yrs, but its a pinto with a weber, so nee bother i recon
are they worth out these days?

pete if that 97 k engine is knackered it says alot for the brand of car its coming out of.If you took one out of a 70s audi or beemer with similar mileage it would be barely run in mate. You speak as if thats been to the moon and back mileage wise.At 50 odd years old yourself i bet you have walked 5 or 6,000 miles personally so to talk about that engine having done alot in ford terms due to not the best engineering and design is the reason it is what it is.I would love to see you one day stick a proper septic V8 in one and give a blue oval car more of what the companies founding father and family was more used too.You dont find chevy big blocks abused and needing a rebuild with just 97 k on them use wise they have usual done double or treble that and still going.

I have a Mk3 estate with 1600 OHV and the same gearbox and front bench seat as yours….If I swap the OHV for the OHC 2L, what gearbox can I use if I want to keep the bench seat? What are you going to use? I really need some advice. From Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹

    • @PeteCswampy
      @PeteCswampy  Рік тому +1

you can keep the gearbox you have. use a 1600 ohc flwheel and clutch on your OHC engine, use a longer thrust release Bering carrier and the ohc engine works with the gearbox you have. you may need to adjust the clutch cable quite far up, i have done this on my car and it works. as i said it all works but clutch release arm needs a longer release bearing carrier to bring the clutch arm forward more than usual. the kent engine sits further into the bellhousing, the ohc engine does not fit as far back into bellhousing but this is compensated for by fitting a longer bearing carrier. on mine i had to adjust the clutch cable by packing it out on bellhosusing . it will work

There were a few things in the Parkers intro that I disagree with. 1. They said newer cars are more dependable. This is false. As long as they are maintained, old cars a extremely reliable and other than some catastrophic failure, if an old car does break down, a knowledgable driver can get it running enough to at least get it home.. 2. Gas mileage of 25 mpg? With a. Proper tuning of the engine that car should easily get 30 mpg or more... 3. All this pushing of EV's is a mistake. Yes, EV's are the way of the future, but the viability of widespread EV usage is still decades away as it is not feasible to add all that extra load onto the existing powergrid which is not up to it and will fail because of it.

Have the presenters taken illicit drugs before filming. 0-60 in 10 seconds was fast back in the day and still respectable today. The new car looks ugly, has lots of screens to distract you from driving. The future us not electric cars; 250-300 mile range will be much less in real life and less as the battery ages. The semiconductors driven curcuitry will be too expensive replace against the value of the vehicle as it ages, reproducing broken electrics/battery no longer available will render them as scrap well before an old simply to repair car. How they can claim it as positive is beyond me.
