    • @crstph

true! part of that is; you cant often imagine your parents being your age, but you WATCHED your older sibling when they were your age, so they are often your only example for what you’re supposed to Do. my sister did girlscouts, my sister did theater, so it took me until i was like 13 to realize “...wait....i didnt Have to do those things. like there were other ways to grow up”
but by that point i had already spent most of my childhood doing things exactly as she had done them that her impact was irrevocable
and its an interesting double-edged sword bc while you will inherently Never be able to surpass them in any skill until you are at least both adults, my striving after her always made me better. most people complimented me by saying “you’re better than your sister was at your age!” which obviously implies that she is better than me, now. but im still improved in who i am because she was there to show me! but also my sister was a very nurturing and caring person (much like john) and she always not only tolerated but encouraged my following her in everything like a little duckling so that’s probably a very specific experience lol

I know what you mean. I was having a conversation about stuff like this with my mom last night re: my sisters, my children. I'll go back to what I've said before: your parents fostered a family that produced adults who make "nouns (videos, books, content, thoughts, ideas, movements, and silliness too)" worth consuming (listening to, thinking about, etc.). I love that John's depth of introspections, and others' ideas, can inspire you to make new content or other things no one has done before.
Both of you, but more frequently John, help me feel grounded when thinking about the tough things that can be painful to spend my thinking minutes on (loss, empathy). Your entrepreneurial, innovative streak is inspiring to me to take chances on new ideas and ways of thinking. You, as an entity (Complexly) and as many individuals, consisting of many attributes, enrich my life so much, thus affecting those in my circle of connection. The world would be a much better place if we all felt more comfortable being proud of our friends, telling our family that we love them, and being generally supportive and affectionate human beings. There is absolutely nothing Hank says that's not okay to say to a friend or brother... so why do we act like it's so weird and taboo to be this openly loving?

Just yesterday I listened to a 2018 episode of Dear Hank & John in which Hank talked about how our bodies are all made out of other people's bodies (our parents) and therefore every human is not as individual and unconnected as we are inclined to think. This video enhances that theme.

And this is why Hank is one of my favorite people on the Planet.
I found John through Hank (which is opposite for many fans)
You're both amazing humans, and National treasures, but Hank's energizing spark makes me smile.

watched this after performing a play with my high school theatre program. made me think of how excited we all get for each other when we nail a song or joke. it's a collective celebration, no jealousy between different roles in this cast. having that sense of community rather than hyper-individualism has made me so much happier this school year. you articulated the feeling very well!

I've watched SciShow and Crash Course History for several years. Just a few months ago I discovered vlogbrothers and was shocked that I hadn't heard of this channel before. I think it was the Sycamore Tree video that I watched first. I was in devastated awe, fearing for John's life (and then utterly confused by the star rating at the end). Since then, I have been catching up on old videos. I love the total differences and the commonalties that you both bring to the channel. I really appreciate the deep honesty that you both share. Thank you for sharing yourselves.

Over-individuation definitely has its share of problems. The author Jack Adam Weber spoke about losing his home in Hawaii due to lava flow from a volcano, and how he and his neighbors had to re-settle elsewhere and band together to survive and rebuild. He said that, as well as being one of the worst traumas he experienced, it was one of the most enriching periods of his life. Banding together for mutual survival is something we are meant to do. When technology and society made us so safe that we lost the need to depend on each other in a personal - rather than impersonal - way, we lost something vital to the human experience.

I get that these are 4 minute videos a few times a week so it’s a limited, scripted view, but I think if you’re looking for a guide for what non-toxic masculinity I can’t think of a better example than these two lovely men. I aspire to achieve this level of brotherly love. Thank you, Hank and John!

Watching the last few videos of this channel, I just am hit with so so many emotions and thoughts I wish to individually give time to and soak in because so many realisations have hit me, for example in this video, as Hank explains how being an individual is hard and how him being mistaken for John and vice versa is in a way a relief. So many notions have flooded into my mind (how I wish I could keep better track of them) that now the simplest way left to word how I felt is that I feel joy. I'm at loss of words. It just gives me so much joy I could cry ❤️

At some point in the near future there might be a hanks channel video talking about `aaaghhh I, after 14 years of being a UA-camr, sometimes still make mistakes like this, uploading a video with no sound, and thankfully nerdfighteria is a wonderful community and this probably isn't the silliest thing I have done but it is one of the more public, to a larger audience' and then turn it into a wonderful metaphor about life and development and such. And that video will be one of the many reasons I love the vlogbrothers and their content.

this was super wholesome and heartwarming, thanks for fixing the audio hank. I think it is always really important and special that people have connections with others where they can feel that other people's accomplishments are a part of their own accomplishments because it helps lift other people up. I want to see more of that in society instead of people competing (though healthy competition can be good) seeing other people as allies as their successes as our own successes makes us want to help others grow.

I had to move back home after I finished my degree last March and over the past year I've relearnt what it feels like to be a sister 24/7. Also, not just a sister but an eldest sister, and while I've always known that it's a big part of WHO I am and WHY I am the way I am, I've only just started noticing how content I am with it. I couldn't be prouder of my younger sisters or the fact that so much of my identity is tied in with them. I totally empathise with how you experience John's success and it's just really heartwarming and maybe a little comforting to know that we can all be individuals without desperately needing to set ourselves apart from one another.

I love when John and Hank support each other and are in awe of each other's success because I am always so grateful for the good they do in the world, the community they foster and help lead, the stories they tell, the change and curiosity they inspire, the laughs they give and share, and the comfort they provide in every aspect of their careers and lives they offer us a window to.
Also have you ever seen them in the same place? Maybe they are the same person. I mean I personally saw John on tour with Dr. Turtleman and Hank on tour with Professor Bumblebee so I feel like maybe the reunion videos are an elaborate conspiracy and I want to start that conspiracy right here.

You have to be blind and deaf to not know you guys are not the same person. Blind, because you look like brothers, but you don't look like identical twins, or close to it, and because you've been on stage and in videos together. Deaf, because your voices don't sound at all alike. On top of that, like you said, you both have different talents and different interests and that comes through in your videos and your tours and everything. You are both amazing people, but you are quite obviously different people.

I really like the idea of shared success and the idea when you're close to someone their success almost becomes your success too but you benefit even more from their success because you don't have to think about it as much, it's very similar to how some see grandchildren in that they get the benefits of greeting a new member of the family and being there for all the cute and wholesome moments but being able to hand them back to the parents when they're done, or like getting to enjoy your friends pets without having to pick up their poop at the park
