The Soldier's Song (Irish Anthem) but you're under siege at Jadotville
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- The Siege of Jadotville occured in September 1961, a small contingent of Irish troops serving as part of the United Nations Operation in the Congo were besieged in the mining town of Jadotville by Katangese forces loyal to the secessionist State of Katanga. The siege took place during the seven-day escalation of a stand-off between ONUC and Katangese forces during Operation Morthor. Although the Irish soldiers resisted Katangese attacks for five days while a relief force of Irish, Indian and Swedish troops attempted to reach them, they were eventually forced to surrender. They were subsequently held as prisoners of war for approximately one month.

The last surviving veteran of the siege was actually at my school in 2021 for a reason I don't know to be honest. He's a solid man
How is he doing? Is he still alive?
@@teodze3432Maybe he want to see his grandson and probably he's just a corpse, now.
How do you know they were the last alive?
That was 1961,
the most Soldier's from the 155 would be ca. 80 years old today,
I dont think they are all dead.
@@danielp2311 I read as of Aug 2021, just under 40 we’re left, but they also stated it was 158 men, so could be false info!
The real tragedy was how they were treated when they got home… dear Irishmen, you will be cherished forever
What happened to them?
@@feridzeynalov7033 The Irish goverment and military officials refused to recognize the battle as such and shamed them for their surrender. Some of the Irish survivors later took their own lives

@@bancitroggo8104 fucking disgraceful, we did much the same in the US with the Nam vets. Shameful
Mercenaries attacked a bunch of Irishmen, unused to the heat, lacking sufficient whiskey supplies and while in the middle of Mass. it’s a miracle any of the mercs survived at all.
Also why isn’t this the subject of a sabaton song yet
They really need to cover this. Goddamn.
During mass? God truly willed that all those bastards get owned by a bunch of Wiley Irishmen. 🇮🇪

An Irishman of 19 years and this is only the second time I’ve heard the anthem in English. It sounds…. Odd
Technically it's the original version too. The English Language version was written before the Irish Language version.
I feel that
They speak the language of the anglos
Keep your culture that they trained to kill alive
As a Brazilian i try to listen the Gaelic version, for more of i fall in love for the language and of course a assumed Wiccan i ever back for the English one
its very beautiful
I am Irish and this floods my brain with every single happy hormone that has existed and will exist
haven't heard the lyrics sung in english since i was a kid in primary school. awesome job dude
One thing I think is often over looked about this siege was, yes they were outnumbered as we all know but what I find the most surprising is among the Katangese forces was elements of the French Foreign Legion.
Yeah, they were doing security for uranium mines if i remeber right, had a famous german collaborater leading them.
Thats funny, you had former Nazi's and former French resistance members working alongside each other against an international force of UN peacekeeprs
@@GungaGingster1215what the fuck
It was common as fuck for Legionnaires to work as mercenaries back then. IIRC before leaving the Legion they would be headhunted by mercenary units that did a lot of work with/on behalf of the French Government.
Yeah that’s not surprising far all of you know the reputation of the French foreign legion.
i recall this and having no deaths in the siege surprised me and our ROTC teacher mentioned the tactics they used especially the important of defense and pre prepared positions
The Irish can seem cheeky time to time, but damn good fighters they are. May Ireland prosper forever. 🇺🇸♥️🇮🇪

These are true Irishers. They put up with shit from the brass, and then they put up with shit from other Irishers at home, because they shot themselves out of ammo and then some. Hats off to these gentlemen.
They even exhausted all of the ammo that they had for the several World War One machine guns that they had on site. They shot every single round that they had. They did absolutely all that they could have done, bar fixing bayonets and dying needlessly to the last man.
Finally something Irish i was waiting for this thanks lad
not only did the irish endure the siege against a numerically superior enemy. they all survived long enough to surrender alive
As an Irishman, thank you for making this!

This siege was an humiliation for United Nation high command who have been put in difficulty by a troop made of locals and a bunch of mercenaries without heavy weapon and supplies.
I call having air support a type of heavy weapon
@@dylantegg5322 A single trainer with machine guns and light bombs isn't heavy, no
