History fact: Chiang Kai Shek had ordered one of his elite units to hold the city of Shanghai until it’s last breath to drain the resources of Japanese forces, although Shanghai was eventually captured they managed to slow down the Japanese expansion and those who fought for Shanghai was praised as a hero.
He didn't order them to do it to drain the resources of the IJA, he ordered them to stay to show how willing the Chinese were to fight the Japanese to the last breath. Shanghai was a city with significant foreign observers so he was trading their lives in hopes of foreign aid. Unfortunately, the westerners who saw the scene were not moved and basically the Second United Front was left to struggle it out alone until 1941. It was purely a strategic move, tactically it would have been better to preserve these highly trained cadres because getting men of this quality and this training would be basically impossible for the rest of the war.

Its not hard to see why he got fucked up by the japanese, either: China was in a civil war at the time. The Kuomintang’s army was disorganized and lacked the proper equipment to hold back the japs. I also find it incredibly hard to believe that a man as jingoistic as Kai-Shek would ask his greatest enemy for help. And besides, its not like he was wrong. The japanese had an infinitely better trained and equipt army, sure, but it was severely overextended. The communists may not have had that: but they could do something far more dangerous: sew discontent and forment uprising to weaken china, exposing it to defeat. And the PLA did end up taking over china after the fact, sooo… P.S: to think that only the communists actually fought the japs in the war is utter bullshit. So, Germany and Japan did not ally under the best circumstances and that Germany helped their ally's enemy. Quite intriguing.
