American aircraft used and numbers wrong. Midway had Torpedo Squadron 8 flying Douglas Devastator torpedo bombers, 2 x B17 bombers, 19 x F2A-2 Buffaloes and 4 x F4F-1 Wildcats. The fate of Torpedo Squadron 8 is written in history however the fate of the 23 fighters with rookie pilots sent into their first combat versus nearly 200 experienced veteran Japanese pilots and crews is less publicised. Right from take off 2 x Wildcats developed engine problems and were force to land back at Midway field leaving just 21 fighters flying CAP over the base. The first kill was by a Buffalo taking out a A6M Zero in a head on pass. 2 x A6M Zeroes would be also shot down by the equally as nimble Buffaloes. (The Buffalo had a tighter turning circle, equal roll rate but due to the extra armour plating fitted, a feeble climb rate when compared to the Zero and the Wildcat). The 2 x remaining Wildcats didn't fare so well with their notorious rear visibility blind spot making them vulnerable to rear attacks (solved later by the Thatch Weave tactic). Both were badly damaged and force to crash land back at Midway field. Total US fighter kills were 3 x A6M Zeroes and 8 x A3M Val dive bombers. US fighter losses were 4 x Wildcats (the two that returned early were destroyed on the ground and the two that crash landed were beyond repair) and 11 x F2A-2 Buffaloes with some of the others needing minor repairs. Had there been a later second attack wave on Midway would have only been able to launch between 6 to 8 Buffaloes in response.
Wait what the Yorktown? It should be the hornet and the enterprise.
Excellent video!
Good video!
Great video, only, Marines had Brewster Buffalo's on Midway, along with a mixed bag of SBDs and vindicators, plus some B-17 s.
I love it
