The problem with so many of these doll line reboots is that they basically try to capitalise on the success of other doll lines while simultaneously throwing everything that made their own brand unique and successful in the first place out the window. Monster High being a great example of this.
Sure, for every long running property, it’s important to update and modernise the material. But at the same time, you have to stay true to the core of what made the property stand out and resonate with people to begun in with. It can be a tricky balance sometimes and a lot of companies and creatives tend to mess it up, especially with doll line reboots/rebrands.

Exactly! I wasn't collecting dolls at all when Monster High first came out, but they were so cool - super articulated dolls with wildly different looks than the regular fashion dolls that were out at the time. Cool!
So they reboot them and essentially just make them all Barbie dolls with green skin, taking away everything about them that made the line interesting and worth buying.
      Great?

@FrenkTheJoy I grew up with the original Monster High dolls and owned A LOT of them. I watched their webisodes religiously and always tuned in for their latest movies that would air on Nickelodeon. I stopped buying the Monster High dolls once they got rebooted in 2016. It just wasn’t the same anymore. I also stopped watching the new Monster High movies. Mattel really let me and other OG MH fans down.

The problem isn't that they change every now and them. Mattel do it too with Barbie, a lot of companies make it with their products (winx, my little pony, playmobil etc). The problem with strawberry shortcake is that they change them drastically every 5-10 years

@@LuciesCafe Yeah, I remember the 2007 ish Strawberry Shortcake tv show having girls from various different backgrounds. There was a pink haired girl from France, An Asian girl that had Dark blue-ish buns, A pale blue haired girl from Antarctica I think, A hawaiian girl, And a girl that had a more "country" accent. She was like a cowgirl. and of course, there was Orange blossom and Ginger Snap. Orange blossom being African american, And Ginger snap- (I always got the feeling she's like half Indian or something. but I don't think that's true.) -having a slightly darker skin tone than the usual pale white skin tone.
(side note: there was also a character that had glasses, yet she wasn't your "typical geeky smart girl". so yeah that was nice and different)
Anyway, That's all what I remembered in 2010 from when I watched the show when I was little. I may have gotten some of their backgrounds wrong, but it has been over a decade since I watched it. And you get the point- It was a inclusive show. Now, Sure, they kept Orange blossom's darker skin tone, (and why wouldn't they? She's not orange blossom if they change her skin tone!) But other than that, they've just created the usual new characters all with the same pale skin tone. I really don't like the 2020-ish new reboot. The outfits, and characters look really sloppy. (also, I forgot to add, in BBA, they did have Cherry Blossom, Who I'm pretty sure was Asian. And also, they had Sweet grape, and she had glasses.)

I think many factors are involved in the reboot of monster high… Cost of manufacturing, complaints from parents and other groups that the dolls looked too scary (they obviously haven’t seen living dead dolls), etc. it’s a shame because so many beautiful dolls came out of that line. my favorites were Toralei, Lagoona, Scarah, and Holt… but I really loved them all. As I said before, when the reboot came out I called the dolls “little girl high” lol

You should talk about “what’s her face” dolls at some point if you haven’t already. Removable wigs, you have to draw the face on. Came with stamps for the eyes and mouth since young kids like me couldn’t draw a face on a doll to save my life so I never really liked her. I'm a new MH fan, And although I'd still watch the upcoming live action movie, I really am not a fan of how they look in it. Why did they give Clawdeena glasses and freckles? There's nothing wrong with that, but they should have kept Claw's ORIGINAL look. Just create a NEW character with freckles and glasses if they're trying to be more inclusive. Also, I like her brunette with purple highlights hair better than her new ALL purple hair. And Frankie, She looks more like Bella Hadid than she does Frankie! like, Isn't she supposed to be more smiley, and more... idk, Frankie-ish! She just seems like her personality is going to be different in the upcoming movie. And those hot pink lightning bolt earrings don't seem very Frankie to me. Maybe they would suit her better if they were green?... Lastly, Draculaura. WHERE'S HER FANGS! she better have them in the movie. And her hair looks nice, but I still like her old hair. Also, come on, how is she Drac, if she doesn't have her signature pigtails!?! Anyway, all that being said, I'm still going to watch it. lol.

There is one I know of: Barbie Fashionistas.
Now I know they aren’t bad now, with the new things (skin tones, hair textures, body sizes), but the main appeal of the original dolls wasn’t just that, it was the articulation. They got their name from posing and such, like models, but started to phase it out after Liv dolls ended and then kept it until the reboot. We have Made To Move, but even the bodies they used to have (pivot bodies, the Barbie Extra Doll’s bodies) are even worse. They have better body proportions, but the articulation is stiff and worse off, which is odd because I still have some of the pivot bodies and they work fine, so I don’t know why they changed it, rather then just to have no articulation so you have to buy Made To Move bodies.
I also did like the 2010s Bratz, but for the new characters and some of the fashions. I liked the rock/singer ones from 2010/2011, the pop star ones (not the wigs and all that, but I liked the outfit they made lady Gaga inspired outfits for Jade), the tattoo one (it had sleeves on it and it was crappy looking, but the outfits and Yasmin’s hair were actually pretty good quality, and Shadi (out of all the characters of 2010’s new ones, she was the coolest one, with blue/hazel eyes, a darker complexion, and kind of a tomboy outfit; I hope they remake her into one of the original dolls and put her in the app game they have).

Your so right about the fashionista's. I remember when they first came out they were articulated, had extra fashions, and the styles of the clothes were gorgeous. Now they are stiff, have raggy looking clothes, and are so unattractive. And they seem to get worse with every year. Extras are articulated, but I'd prefer the made to move 22 point articulation, which we should get for the price. I'm sick of having to swap bodies.🙄

I was collecting Monster High when the reboot happened, so it had an extra negative impact on me. I still proudly display my original Monster High dolls because that line got me into doll collecting and I loved Cleo and Nefera's Egyptian inspired aesthetic.
The Ever After High reboot was also unfortunate, and I missed out on the original ones growing up, as I was more focused on Monster High at the time. I do have Crystal Winter though, and I feel like she is a very unique take on The Snow Queen, and I also love that she looks more icy in her phenotype rather than looking Elsa-like.
With the Equestria Girls dolls, I actually liked the reboot ones better because I liked their size, and the quality of their clothing was an improvement over the original dolls. I own Rarity, Sunset Shimmer, and Applejack from that line, and Sunset Shimmer is probably my favorite.

I love that Twyla is Autistic in Gen 3 and Cleo is goregeous, but I don't like that the MH Gen 3 show and movie is limited to Nickelodeon and Paramount Plus as well as the fact that they made Nefera (my favorite character from MH Gen 1) nice. I'm glad you usually open your collectible toys, because deep down they were all originally in mind , made for making children and adults alike happy. If you leave those older toys in the box, not only will they deteriorate faster if they are made of plastic, but no one will get any enjoyment out of it. It makes me happy when I see a collector who wants to preserve toys of our childhood and before, and also get enjoyment out of it.

For me, the She-Ra reboot dolls were very disappointing. I LOVE the rebooted show and the character designs and was hoping for dolls/figures around the size of the original dolls. Instead, we got either standard fashion doll size, or action figures that weren't really dolls. She-Ra was so cool back when I was little because she could beat up another kid's GI-Joe and THEN put on a pretty sparkly gown, brush her hair and ride her unicorn to a ball. I loved, and love even more that I'm an adult, the versatility of She-Ra (mine played Eowyn for years in my LOTR action figure collection, long after I'd stopped playing with toys, rode my my little ponies and had adventures when I was a kid. I still have her somewhere and I'd hoped to get her a rebooted friend in her size. Ah well!
I always was a little creeped out by Equestria Girls as a concept. I've also seen much better humanized MLP designs on deviant art. I'd have preferred to see them with different human skin tones, though I suppose the version they went with avoids any appearance of racism if anyone got left out.
I remember buying my little cousin her first Diva Starr (original). It was so much fun to see her playing with it! The others...you have a point about striving for things being more Barbie-like. It's an odd homogenization when a brand already works well and is charming on its own.

I was never a big fan of them or Myscene back in the day and only have a couple dolls from those brands, but there are some cute reboot Bratz like some dance line I forgot the name of. Their eyebrows aren't the thin, angry ones but quite soft and they're adorable! I can see though that they don't really look like the original Bratz anymore 😅

When Monster High tanked their style I was heartbroken, and so was my daughter. She recently bought herself the new comeback dolls. We compared them to their originals and they're pretty similar, but we never even saw them at our local stores. Still sad.
As for the Bratz, the good thing about the 2010's dolls was their body sculpts were really nice, but I agree that that took away the ability to use the old fashions, and the fashions they came with were just bad, and I was a mom at the time (and still am of course)! My daughter didn't even want any. She preferred the Moxie Girls dolls and then Monster High.
As for the Equestria Girls reboot, they were actually pretty nice. They were fully articulated and much larger than the originals. By the time they came out though my kids had already outgrown playing with MLP dolls. Still wish I had grabbed a couple for myself though.
The 2010 Rainbow Brite dolls were okay, which is almost worst than being bad. I had intended to pick them up and when I went back to Toys R Us to do so they had already gotten rid of them. If they had only spent more time and money on the new Cartoon. They really tried to go cheap with it and they attempted to make a beloved fan favorite character the bad guy and that did NOT sit well with any of us.

While I never had any of the Diva Starz dolls as a kid, I loved going to their website. I used to spend hours on there doing all the different activities they had. I remember being disappointed when the characters got re-designed because they looked less unique with the more realistic proportions and felt too similar to the Bratz girls in appearance. The worst part for me was that Summer (who was my favorite due to her love for animals) was replaced by Miranda who just felt like another Alexa. Summer's room did remain on the website with all the activities, but aside from a re-design of her in that section and a mention of her in a webisode saying she was on an ocean rescue mission with her family, she was absent from everything new.

But when they started developing spots on them, something called vinyl deterioration syndrome or VDS, I just had to part with them because I didn’t want it to spread. I also had a huge Monster High collection. They had so many different face sculpts and bodies. they were truly unique… and from what I understand, Mattel was getting a lot of complaints from parents and others about how creepy and scary they looked. decided to reboot them and make them “Less scary“ for little kids, when they were never intended for little kids to begin with! I hated the reboot and so did many MH collectors. I call the reboot “ Little Girl High.” 😁 they look like little girls with the extra large eyes. UGH.
Do you know anything about Jem dolls by Hasbro from the 80s? Jem got a reboot too. I still have my vintage Jem dolls from the 80s. The reboot version by integrity toys just doesn’t do anything for me.
I actually like the more current Polly Pockets. Not too crazy about the rubbery clothes but I do like the dolls. The original versions were just too tiny.
And yes I had a large Bratz collection too. But they all started to look alike after a while. They definitely took a turn for the worse after 2010. They had so many new characters but like I said, they pretty much all have the same faces. I think MGA only had two molds for the girls and one for the guys. Boring! I can’t stand dolls that use the same head molds for all the characters. I guess I was spoiled by Monster High and vintage Barbie & friends.

I preferred the reboot of Equestria Girls over the original. The old dolls tended to have plastic clothes and no articulation. The face sculpts were awful. The hair was bad. The colors were washed out. And they really did not resemble the show. Most fans really didn't like the styles either. The reboot improved on a lot of these problems.

I never had a Monster high dool but god the reboots are awful :S The faces looks weird, the legs and arms can't bend anymore so the dolls have the same position which is boring, their dresses looks similar; same model but in differents colors. None of the monsters have unique accessories or charm. Everything is gone! The originals looks prettier and creative :D Can't say the same for the reboot.
The Bratz and the Diva starz got lame reboots too. The B just got taller and the others couldn't talk anymore. That's dissapointing :(

I just found you last night and this video makes me want to ask one question. It might be kind of confusing but, any ideas to talk about how the Blythe dolls were brought into Littlest Pet Shop after being bought by Hasbro? The Blythe dolls really have an adult fandom in their original forms because you can change the eye color via the ring on their backs and they allow for photo ops, so it really makes me annoyed that when they introduced Blythe dolls into that series they took away the eye changing gemick to save on money and just painted on the face. The original version of the dolls can still be bought but they aren't cheap. I have one and a fashion book and I almost cried seeing the price of the doll ($300+ USD is what I paid for mine.)

I bought one of the 2015 bratz because I was SO excited to see them in stores again (and honestly I do think that Cloe with pink hair is a fun concept) but the more I looked at her the more disappointed I was! I could deal with the fashions (as there's still good Bratz clothes out there), but her face paint is..... really unsettling!
Also honestly I really like the concept of tall Bratz, but not as a reboot- I think it could be fun spun as either a "grown up" line or a "supermodel" line, where they're canonically taller than the typical dolls! Because not being able to fit the original Bratz clothes stinks, and they do miss some of the original charm of the proportions, but they're still honestly quite beautiful dolls!

My sister had a Diva Starz doll, I swear that thing was possessed. She would still talk and move even after taking the batteries out, she’d also talk and move without anyone touching her(even without batteries in her), she sometimes would say some really messed up things and sometimes she would talk in different voices… she was the ginger one. She had a green top and black shorts with bright orange shoes. She was the most terrifying thing ever, I don’t even remember what happened to her because she just disappeared one day. I think my parents had enough of her and threw her creepy ass away… so scary.

I somehow find Ever After High Dolls at Value Village, and I finally found the extremely rare Allister Wonderland, and the Epic Winter Daring Charming Dolls. The image of the Daring Charming from 2016 was so misleading. I was hoping he was going to have Dexter's face and rooted hair until Mattel gave him more of my childish boycott expression which I think is okay in my personal preference, but I extremely hate the fact that his torse could move, and his sculpted pants and sneakers are a complete abomination. However, I re-bodied him on Allister's body, and I feel in love with him.

10:01 The problem with Polly Pocket dolls was that their clothes were very hard to put on the dolls. I felt like some dolls, their bodies weren't meant to go through the outfits cause there wasn't enough room for the legs. That's why a majority of my Polly Pocket dolls' clothes are ripped or torn because they were so freakin hard to put on.

Strawberry Shortcake and Rainbow Brite are my favorite!, I wasn't born in the 80s but I've started liking them because my mom was a little girl back in the 80s and they were her childhood, I'm obsessed with them, also the reboots of Strawberry Shortcake don't bother me honestly, I think her newer versions are cute, especially her 2009 version of her, she got a 2021 reboot and is getting dolls in October 2022, I can't wait her 2021 reboot looks cute too but her back in the 80s still is best, same for Rainbow Brite she slayed in the 80s, her reboots I have mixed feelings about ngl, I don't like them as much as I like Strawberry Shortcake's reboots, also the Bratz and Monster High and MLP Equestria Girls reboots don't really bother me either, but originals are the best 💕

I just stumbled over this channel and I got to say I do not know a lot about who makes dolls and what counts as a doll line etc. But one of the biggest down grades in dolls I know of are the Winx Club dolls. I saw some recently in a store and when I remembered the dolls i played with as a child i was in shock. I know Mattel used to make the winx dolls, i don't know if they still do, but the dolls from the 00s really looked like their animated characters. Like even as a novice I can tell that they don't have their unique face molds anymore and the beautiful hairstyles or color palettes they used to. It makes me pretty sad and really compares to the Monster High reboot in terms of quality drop.

Eck, the Rainbow Brite reboots not sanctioned by Hallmark.... just all the NO. I was a huge RB fan and collected the original line. I got the paint on me reboot version for Christmas when she came out and I was confused. On the one hand... loved the colored hair and the idea you could paint on the dress. But she wasn’t Rainbow Brite. I’m more forgiving of the traditional RB reboot where she was just aged up and a few details were changed on her dress. But it’s the Hallmark retro reboot line I’m most accepting of. I love seeing Rainbow Brite back in Hallmark stores.
Another bad reboot were the Cupcake dolls. They may have been called something else, I don’t recall. But these were tiny dolls with huge hats and big skirts that when flipped up became the top of the cupcake and the wrapper respectively. Their claim to stardom was that the doll smelled like its name... for example Blueberry Muffin...and the smell lasted. I recently found my Blueberry in a box after decades and she smelled exactly the same! They apparently tried to reboot this line at least twice by different companies and it bombed both times.

OMG BETTY SPAGHETTI! I had so many of those when I was a kid! They were my favourite. I loved the fact one of them had my name 'Hannah'. She was the black doll with the purple hair. When I was young, for whatever reason I struggled saying 'betty spaghetti' and so instead would call them 'spaghetti manelie' WHAT EVEN IS THAT, I MADE IT HARDER.
I completely forgot all about DIVA STARZ! I had a blonde one with a pink colour scheme. The massive feet you could put near someone else's diva star doll and they'd ''talk'' to each other. Me and my cousin had them.
I was a teenager when I got myself a couple of Monster High dolls, just cause they looked so damn amazing. I'd never watched the series or anything, I just liked the dolls. But even I can see their reboots are horrible compared to the ones I'd purchased.
Bratz and Polly Pockets had to be my other favourites alongside Betty Spaghetti. I hated when they changed Polly Pocket's plastic hair to 'real' effect hair. It kinda lost the vibe that was Polly Pocket. I used to also have the miniatures. So I had the Polly Pocket camera that if you opened it up, it would turn into a wedding venue with the tiny Polly Pocket's inside.
Miss when toys were that unique and fun. Toys for kids these days are so boring and depressing, no quality whatsoever. It's no wonder kids would rather have their faces glued to screens now, than play with dolls or toys.
