    They still do Doki Doki Morning in their recent shows and the crowd still goes crazy, even overseas.

    They started with no budget, Amuse, their talent agency, thought it was a mad idea and provided no extra funding as they could not imagine there was an audience for a Metal-Pop fusion band. They only allowed their producer to go ahead with his mad experiment because there was no financial risk (they were just a sub-unit of a bigger Idol group) and they thought it would be a short-lived experiment.
    They borrowed clothes, played in shopping malls and tiny venues singing and dancing to pre-recorded instrumentals and against all the odds and to everybody's surprise they found their own audience before they got the funding for the live band and the bigger shows.
    The guys in skeleton suits you saw here were called Babybones and they were only pretending to play the instruments. The Kami Band were being phased in gradually for nearly 18 months playing the encores in some shows ... they came on for the last 5 songs in this concert.
    This concert was Legend 1997 celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday in December 2013 - 2 months before they released their first album in Feb 2014.
    'Iine' (that is iine pronounced ee-neh, not Line ... don't worry too much, it is a trap most people fall into) means 'so good' like a thumbs up emoji.👍
    It was just the second song they released after 'Doki Doki Morning' and they were establishing very early on that the normal rules for what genres you can mix were not going to apply to BABYMETAL.
    If they want a song that starts with EDM, changes to hip hop (watch the music video to get the hip hop rap ... in most live performances like this they just make that a call & response) and then that hardest drop into death metal from hip hop ever before changing back to EDM ... then that was exactly what they were going to do.
    Su-metal mimes the death screams - she doesn't often lip-sync, just for specific parts of specific songs ... and this scream is one of those few occasions.

    _Kitsune da O!_ 🦊🤘🔥
    You fall in the common mistake almost everyone does with this title and writing "Line" lol
    It's actually iine with the capital i and it means something like this👍
    Iine! is one of the early songs, 2nd single released, making us clear they don't wanna be pigeonholed. It's a super fun party night song with their besties and you got everything you need on this song, from de "Para Para" style, eurobeat and MoiMoi chemistry (Moimoi is Yui and Moa together doing their thing), to a hip hop with 90's look (in the official MV) and heavy metal with death growls breakdown, is a beautiful crazy dream and is "Iine" = 👍
    Note: this is one of the few songs I always recommend to watch the official MV first coz that brutal breakdown and the visual hits harder. Megitsune, Doki Doki Morning and Karate official MV are another one worth to react the MV for first time watching.
    Song was part of a single and first collaboration with the band Kiba Of Akiba, they made a cover of one song called "Kimi To Anime Ga Mitai" (the only cover they played several times at live concerts before 2014) and Kiba Of Akiba did Doki Doki Morning, an interesting upbeat tempo version.
    Except for certain songs like Headbanger!! and IDZ, SuMetal doesn't shout those parts you heard during live performance, is always a backing track, same for the growling except for Distortion after 2019, that got collaboration growling of Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy band, also none of the Kami Band do growling or any voices on any song. MomoMetal, the new official member also did some growling lines in the live version of METALI!!
    The live version certainly is a blast and you'll see some difference on dance choreography, live at Budokan 2014 is a nice choice to enjoy the original trio once again and with a real band playing behind instead of the "baby-bones" you saw here air playing instruments, that's the first fake band they got when performing live but after 2014 they completely switch to the Kami Band so you can see that at first they didn't have so much budget to expend and put on the live shows, they started really humble unlike others subunits under the same main group Sakura Gakuin with a big agency behind. Nowadays things are different and they turn back the table and BM are actually giving jobs (in a way, not literally) to some of those girls when SG was disbanded back in 2021.
    This was live at Legend 1997 (2013) the same place you can see Gimme Chocolate!! official MV, only the five (actually 4) last songs on this show are with the Kami Band playing.
    Last year they brought back this hit live at PIA Arena MM in Yokohama and later at the Asian/Australian Tour after almost 6 years without playing when YuiMetal left the group, we'll see in future shows but like always OTFGK. (Only The Fox God Knows).
    That ludicrous hip hop breakdown always get everyone lol.
    See you next time and like SuMetal said in the rap section "Put your kitsune up!" 🦊🤘🔥

    There will always be POP with BABYMETAL, it's in the principle of Kawaii Metal alongside their Japanese culture there is a lot of organical influences, sometimes I even got me questioning about them being a Metal band because their work can pratically be described as just music overall, I mean they are an experimental geniuses who can produce any genre together, all their albums are different from each other, all songs are different & I don't believe their signature sound changed since their start but a much more complex evolution of their own genre, their latest album is pratically everything they always did from the beginning but different again because it's not a common album but a concept instead. I saw you got Metal Galaxy a very insane album in terms of experimentation, even more than their first & second album, it just gets better & better lol.

    Glad to see you guys tryin to figure them out .. I will say tho .. the song is called IINE! .. two I’s .. and it’s pronounced “EE-nay” and they say it many times in the song .. translates to “How Nice” .. also the official MV has a big rap section missing in the live performance .. saw them in concert in Boston Mass last fall and they were amazing

    When you listen to the older songs, you have to take into account that in the beginning BABYMETAL set out to make metal songs that young girls could relate to. For example: Doki Doki Morning=getting ready in morning, Uki Uki Midnight = girls sleepover, Gimme Chocolate = wanting chocolate but worried about weight. Plus the 3 girls were in their early teens! 🤘🦊🤘

    What got them a big budget was probably the way that fans reacted to them almost frim the start. In 2012 they were invited to perform at the anime festival. I think that show was what convinced Amuse to really go all out with the production..
    You can see from some of their solo shows with about 200 people at rock clubs in Tokyo to the anime festival in Singapore which had 2500 people the girls had the audience transfixed from the beginning. People just couldnt believe what they were seeing.
    What cemented their fame was the Kami Band. Koba metal was a genius. He literally got some of japans best studio musicians to tour with the girls before anyone knew how big they would get.
    To me its a toss up. Did the kami band make the girls world famous or did the girls make the kami band world famous. Without both the girls and the kami band it probably wouldnt have blown up the way it did. The Kami band gave the girls credibility. Nobody could hear the band and come away thinking this was a band that was faking metal. These guys were literally the best in the business..Mikio was an Instructor at guitar institute japan with over a dozen books published on guitar improv. Ohmura was already world famous playing with Marty Friedmans band. The whole band are geniuses

    Still really enjoying you guy's journey! Yeah their oldest stuff was more extreme with the experiments.. for me Doki Doki Morning is still a fun cool song, but this one was probably by far the most experimental out of their entire current discography.
    Extreme energy, extreme kawaii, two things you'll always find!

  • @Ganimal83
    @Ganimal83 Місяць тому +20

    Hell yeah guys! This is their 2nd song, title is "iine!" (ee-neh), meaning "so good!" It's okay, everybody and their mother messes this up. So much so, it is even listed as "Line!" on Spotify, lol.
    Their 3rd song is "Headbanger", and the live version from Legend 1997 concert (same show as this reaction) is best. Afterwards, you've already done Megitsune, then there is Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Sonisphere UK 2014 is best live version).
    Their musical style ranges so widely on their first album. A few songs and influences:
    *Catch Me If You Can (Budokan 2014):* Slipknot, but cute, hide and seek, and Kami Band solos.
    *Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Sonisphere UK 2014):* Powermetal. Anti-bullying song. Wall of death/mosh pits.
    *Onedari Daisakusen (Legend 1997):* Su takes a break, Yui & Moa does the most adorable version of Limp Bizkit (yes, I know right?). They explain their tactics as spoiled little devils to trick their Dads into spending money to buy them all the shiny things.
    *Akatsuki (Budokan 2014):* Su-metal solo, operatic powermetal ballad, epic, powerful, amazing vocals (she's 16 here!).
    *Rondo of Nightmare (Budokan 2014):* Another Su-metal solo. Dark, ominous, heavy, and Kami Band shows off.
    *BABYMETAL DEATH (Legend 1997):* The most epic show closer. Cuteness - 0, Brutality - 100. Probably puts Alice Cooper shows to shame, and 2 nods to Metallica.
    *Brief Babymetal History:*
    Started in 2010 as part of Sakura Gakuin (SG) idol group themed around school life. Aims to prepare adolescent teen girls (10-15) for a future career in entertainment (singers, actresses, models, etc.). Babymetal was the "heavy music club" of SG, and the pet project of metalhead producer Key Kobayashi, who was stuck in the idol industry. He thought it would be a good to combine J-Pop and Metal to revitalize an aging and dying metal scene in Japan. Everyone thought he was crazy, so minimal budget...Boy, were they wrong lol.
    Babymetal started out playing small side stages in strip malls, food courts, etc. and eventually split from SG and became an independent act. By this concert, "Legend 1997", in Dec 2013 for Su's 16th birthday, Babymetal is already pretty big in Japan, but largely unknown internationally. The following year in 2014, they exploded onto the world stage when they played at UK's Sonisphere Festival infront of 50K+ confused UK metal heads. 2015, they crashed Download UK with Dragonforce on stage, won Best Breakout Artist at Metal Hammer awards, and afterwards, opened for Metallica, Lady Gaga, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Sour, Korn, and covered 2 Judas Priest songs with Rob Halford himself on stage at the 2016's Alternative Press Music Awards, and ultimately 2 back to back sold out nights (55K fans each night) at the Tokyo Dome in 2016.
    Look forward to more! 🤘🦊

    Good reaction. It will be interesting to see you go through their catalog. I don't think they were really looking for what works in a marketing sense. Doki Doki Morning and Iine were and are still incredibly popular and they still perform both of them. Babymetal 's sound is exactly what you are seeing - a mashup of pop, rap, edm and metal. As far as the funding they are a product of a major entertainment company named Amuse. But they didn't get big support from the beginning. They were a vanity project of a producer at Amuse. But they exploded in popularity really quickly and fairly quickly got support from their agency.

  • @Icipher353
    @Icipher353 Місяць тому +6

    I had a feeling this one would be interesting given how you reacted to Doki Doki Morning. Most of the these early songs are quite experimental as they fine tuned the formula. Part of the concept of Babymetal was always to blend J-pop with metal to make metal more approachable to mainstream audiences, and that thread has always run through their music to a greater or lesser degree. Genre bending is a pretty common feature of Japanese music, so in that respect, Babymetal's blending of disparate musical elements isn't that unusual, even if the execution is a bit more extreme than most.
    The name of the song is actually "iine" いいね!, which means "It's good!". It gets misread as "Line" so often that it has become a meme within the fan community, along with "Ijime, Dame, Zettai", which gets the same mistake made with the i in it.
    The scream you hear in this isn't actually Su, it's on a track and Su is miming to it for the effect. Any harsh vocals you hear on the older songs are done by an uncredited vocalist and are on playback for live shows. Momometal on the other hand, can do harsh vocals.
    Iine wasn't played live at all for six years between 2017, when Yui performed her last shows with Babymetal, and April 2023 when they surprised everyone at PIA Arena by playing it at Clear Night.
    It's worth nothing that these early songs actually predate the first album by several years and at the time they were produced, they may not have even had a Babymetal album fully planned out. Doki Doki Morning was released in 2011, while Iine was released in 2012 as part of Babymetal's first single release which they shared with the Tokyo metalcore band Kiba of Akiba. The first album did not release until several years later in 2014, so the songs on the first album were produced gradually over a three year period rather than all at once as a cohesive album.
    Babymetal have been managed for their whole career by Amuse Inc., who are one of the top talent management companies in Japan; they are a big company with significant resources. Creating and promoting musical groups is their core business, and Babymetal are one of their most successful acts, so they get lots of support. Babymetal's producer, Kobametal is also a senior executive within the company, and Babymetal is his pet project, so that also probably helps them to do the things they do.
    Despite all that, Babymetal didn't start out as a big success immediately. Babymetal began as a crackpot side project with a shoestring budget and they played anywhere they could in the early days to get experience. A lot of their early shows where in tiny clubs around Yokohama or places like shopping malls. Due to how unique their act was, they did take off fairly quickly, and by 2013 they were playing fairly decent sized venues in Tokyo. The Legend 1997 show where this was filmed in December 2013 would have been their biggest show to date at that stage with a crowd of around 8,000 people.
    Su-metal comes from a musical family. We know that both her parents were musicians (although not famous ones), and she trained at Actors School Hiroshima from age eight. She was in a musical duo with her older sister Himeka called "Tween", and then after signing with Amuse in 2007 joined the idol group "Karen Girls" to make songs for the anime "Zettai Karen Children". Then in 2010, she became one of the founding class of the idol group Sakura Gakuin, which Babymetal would begin as part of. Yui and Moa's backgrounds are less well known, but they both trained in performing arts from an early age, with Yui being particularly focused on dance.

    Many will comment that the song is called iine. But don't feel bad. Tons of reactors and new fans get fooled by it. Iine basically means "so good" or something similar to that. That's why they do the thumbs up every time they say it. Crazy, fun, and still a crowd pleaser when they play it. Do they have better songs? Yes of course but this was and is still fun, and makes me smile when I see it. 🤘🦊🤘

    i wouldn't call it 'controlling' the crowd. She is 'leading' the crowd to participate in the performance of the song with them. That's the difference between controlling and leading. Have no doubt, every fan there loves the girls and the music and their performance. They are glad to have the opportunity to not just watch and experience the performance, but be a part of the performance too. I've been to one of their touring shows and their concerts are among (if not) the most fun I've ever been to. There has been stories about how audience members experience the 'Babymetal Blues" even after a few days after the concert because there is so much energy and it takes a while to come down from that high.

In fact, the concerts used to have two facets, one day more pop and one day more metal. They once did separate shows for metal fans, for children, for adults, for women. They had to manage such a diverse audience! hahaha

    This was their 2nd song, and they were still experimenting with their sound. More of a Metal/Techno vibe, by the 4th song they had it nailed down. They came from a band called Sakura Gakuin and were the brainchild of their producer Koba-Metal. Koba saw Su-Metal perform in an Anime band called Karen Girls and he saw how she could just blast thru the music. He got her in Sakura Gakuin then formed BabyMetal around Su cuz of her powerful voice, there are 3 documentaries, you should react to one of them. I think Koba almost went broke because he will only get the highest quality of everything for the Girls.

Babymetals talent agency when they formed in 2010 only through pennies at them for support. it took 4 years before they proved they had the audience for them to get to their first album to come out. Back then you could have seen them for free in the mall. Babymetal earned their stripes and their fans. The album sold and then the talent agency came with the money support. After that it might have helped that the head of Tower Records became a big Moa fan. Did he help push their album sales? Well, Only the Fox god Knows

    Again lads good reaction, don't try to see how BM progressed, you have only heard 2 newer songs, Monochrome from the last album and starlight from Metal Galaxy and there is no definitive sound, DDM and iine were the first 2 singles but the 3rd Headbangerrrr!!!!! is completely different, (about a young girl on her 15th birthday going to her 1st metal concert), then you have catch me if you can, the heaviest ever song about playing hide and seek or the absolute beauty of Su singing Akatsuki. The new album is amazing but Monochrome while being one of my favourite songs the rest of the album is completely different and each song completely different from each other just like the 1st, 2nd and 3rd albums. Also, you may find some songs like DDM when you first hear them you may think you don't like but then one day you will😁 find yourself singing them.

    The Hip Hop break is definitely a send up.
    There are early performances where they even say "It's not the metal, is it?" right after that part.
    And of course it sets up one of their heaviest breakdowns. : )
    Most of the rap section in the original song was replaced early on with the audience call-and-response seen here.
    This is the probably the ultimate, "Do you like music genres? We smooshed them all into this one song for you."
    Probably my favorite EDM Dance Rave HipHop Kawaii Metal song of all time. : )
    They hadn't performed this one live since 2017 when they toured with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but they brought it back for nine shows last year.
    BTW, lead singer Su-metal had just turned sixteen the day before this LEGEND 1997 concert from December 21st, 2013.
    1997 is her birth year.

    Another great reaction. Thanks please continue your Babymetal journey.
    You mentioned all the work these girls put in. For some perspective, MoiMoi - Yui and Moa were 14 yo. They attended regular school, atteded and performed in the Amuse idol group Sakura Gakuin, and toured with Babymetal during school breaks. At Sakura Gaukin, they perfromed as part of the idol group as a whole, the heavy metal group (Babymetal), Twinkle Stars, and Mini-Patti. All with different songs and choreography. And they had to keep their regualr grades up at least level 4 or "B"
    Suu no longer attended Sakura Gaukin, but continued her high school education.
    IIRC Suu and Moa completed their college education, while performing and touring as Babymetal. I suspect Yui also completed college.

    To answer your question about how this started, no, they didn't start with that much success. There is a video of the debut with Sakura Gakuin in 2010 and it was too simple. But of course, they brought Sakura Gakuin fans, but the process was completed to include a band in 2012, and this concert was in 2013.

    I hope nobody has been telling you that *SU* is actually doing those screaming bits. I just want to make it clear, that she does not do harsh vocals. There are a few songs that have a screaming track during live shows, that she will mime, for effect. It's basically part of the choreography. *Momoko* is the only one who does any harsh vocals. So, if you see any comments trying to say otherwise, just ignore them. They are unknowingly perpetuating incorrect information. *SU* does clean vocals only. 💖

    If you want to know more about BABYMETAL in a short time then I suggest watching the latest guide "The not so extensive guide to Babymetal" by The Fox Song.
    And if you consider yourself a fan then I suggest watching "A quick BABYMETAL guide for the New and Probably Lost Fans" by Omajination.
    I suggest watching Omajination first before The Fox Song one.

    Basically, in Japan there are agencies dedicated to creating and financing these musical products. One of these products was Sakura Gakuin (a girl's musical group based on school life). SG had several subgroups, including the heavy music club, which It would later gain popularity and become an independent show known as babymetal, in an attempt by its producer to revive metal in Japan. If you want, there is a guide on UA-cam to understand the world of babymetal. 🦊🦊

    Tbh Babymetal first songs were being performed in 2010, and this show you just witnessed was 3 years later, in december 2013, and was their first "Big" show, with about 8k people attending.
    And at that time they hadn't even released their first album yet, since it was released in March 2014!
    THey starte small, released 1 song at a time, started playing food stalls at festivals, and slowly climbed up and started getting a bit more funds to use a bit at a time!
    I hate to break it to you, but that scream was on a backtrack, wasn't really SU 😄

    I would disagree with what you are saying, that they were trying different things to find their sound or find out what appeals to the audience. Yes, they were experimenting, but not to find out "what sticks". Experimenting and mixing different kinds of Metal with other musical genres IS their sound. This has been the case right from the beginning until today. The newer songs tend to be a little more subtle regarding the fusion, while in the earlier songs, and this one in particular, it was more in-your-face. But they were never trying to find a way to appeal to a certain audience. They were creating a new audience right from the start by doing their thing, walking the untrodden path (see Road of Resistance).

    If you are going to react to the song "DEATH", I highly recommend it from this concert.
    Search "Babymetal - Death (Legend 1997) Eng Subs [Real 4K"
    * Intro with subtitles
    * Great performance with east Kami band
    * atmospheric and theatrical performances
    * heavy black metal
    * DEATH's performance from this concert has not yet been surpassed (in my opinion)
    * spoiler - SU here has smudged mascara when tears ran down her face during the previous emotional song (Akatsuki - unfinished version)
