Loved this song when I was young. Love it more and differently now I’m old. Perfection.

When I was a teenager (circa 1975), I used to listen to this song alone at night, in my darkened bedroom, with headphones on, and it would literally make me cry. I was feeling the sentiment without really knowing it - that is, without yet having experienced it, in *this* life. (I'm an old soul.)
    .
Today, I completely understand the sentiment, I have experienced it, and this is still one of my all-time favorite Beach Boys songs.

Such a small and beautiful song. Simplicity is always memorable.

But his simplicity is always disguised. It comes off simple - but isn't with the chord structures and of course how it's arranged. He had the gift and resolve to do all of this. Sixth chords and ninth chords and the major 7ths here and the movement between. All superb.
Dig into the musicality of his craft and you will be amazed.

I'm a lifelong BB fan and though I thought Caroline No was a great tune, I don't think it translated well to AM radio when it was released as a single. But at home on the album cut with headphones- awesome. The Timothy B. Schmidt version with them is killer.

I was a teenager working at a seasonal camp, my leggings were 30 feet from a railway track, I was lonely and at night I would play Pet Sounds and this song to hear the train sound, it is still very alive for me now, thanks Brian

Long before I became acquainted with "Pet Sounds", I first heard 'Caroline, No' as the A side of a Brian Wilson solo single on Capitol. I thought it was great.

Cryptic words from Bruce there. I wonder does he mean freedom creatively, or with girls

Both I assume, he knows that it's a very special song by Brian to close off an album that he made straight from the soul yk.

Bruce is wrong with that statement posted @1:09 -that door was not closing. Though I wouldn't have said Pet Sounds was The Beach Boys best record in 1966, I would now. That doesn't mean a door was closing on Brian's skill at writing songs, far from it. In 1966 I was 14, and was yet to feel the kind of heartbreak a song like "Caroline, No" is. I learned all about that in my twenties. Then "Caroline, No", and some of the others became much more felt instead of listened to as lovely melodies. What Brian went on to write for SMiLE and as he grew older are as good, but he never put out a whole group of them together for one album until 1977. While I appreciate what Brian did in 1976 and '77, the songs are not 1966 great. Love You was very much a Brian solo record.
What could have been as great could have come next, we'll never know. None of us got to experience what SMiLE would have been if released in 1967. I had heard what I consider their best song, "Surf's Up", on Inside Pop, then wondered why it wasn't on their next album. Smiley Smile was only a glimpse into what Brian and Van Dyke were doing, done in a very loose style. "Wonderful" and "Wind Chimes" in their original recordings are fantastic. Just had to wait many years before hearing them. "Little Pad" "Whistle In" and "With Me Tonight" are beautiful in their simplicity, Brian had lost nothing. Of course we got "Good Vibrations" after Pet Sounds. Guess Bruce doesn't think that a leap forward. Bruce would have heard all the songs that were being worked on for SMiLE, as well. Smiley Smile was Brian taking a small step back, though his name is on every track. Brian let the group grow, they became more democratic. More than on Pet Sounds, Smiley Smile let Carl walk in to the spotlight for the first time - his presence is all over that record. Then Brian bounced back, creating two of their best: Wild Honey (with Mike writing most of the lyrics) and Friends - which opened up a door to introduce all the members to the world as writers, except Bruce.
The fact that Bruce was losing interest in the group during this period does not mean it was less great, or that any doors were closing. Pet Sounds is almost a Brian solo record - him and the Wrecking Crew with the groups vocals. He got pushback from the rest for what was coming next, and let the group produce what they thought to be great. Carl, especially, became a great producer. But, Brian was around when he wanted to be.

Bruce was right. A door was closing. More opened up. But it captures an emotional moment in life as we grow up. It sounds like 'Carol, I know' to me.

Song about a sweet, lovable girl growing into a bitter feminist. Where did your long hair go? Where is the girl I used to know? Who took that look away? How did you lose that happy glow? You said you'd never change but that's not true. This has happened to too many women, sadly.
