The mug is made from a small apple log with plenty of burl, handle is made from Applewood from the same tree. Mug is finished in Danish Oil. My Website - mjturning.com
Hahah, it's the simple things that always get me - the lollipop sticks are SUCH a stroke of genius! 20 years I've never thought of it myself, and probably wouldn't for another 20. So long endlessly stabbing the seams of a mould with a spatula!!!
Hi Matt I really love how you make these mugs unique and the are beautiful pieces you makethe wood has wonderful grain and colouring. I really love the mug I like how you make it unique for you with the handle. You are fery talented and a masterwoodturner. The video is great can't wait for your next one. Amanda xx
That was a gnarly looking log!!!! That's beautiful Matt and you did an amazing job making and turning it also!!! Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
I wonder, what was it that you screwed in the bottom? Some kind of foam soaked in oil? Looks very nice! That raw material looked a bit like juniper roots, an amazing wood in my opinion just from the smell alone. Maybe you can get your hands on some one day, I'm sure you could make something great!
@@og-bleistift yea, just pop it in the oven to dry it out first. If you don't have waste from a coffee machine and want it in mass, pop down your local Starbucks with a tub 👍
This is so beautiful man. I'm looking to do something similar for a friend's birthday but I'm scared of the resin being toxic. Do you mind telling me where you got the metal insert?
Question: when you put your wood in the oven, are you doing that mostly to decrease moisture, or to kill any insects/bugs/microorganisms that may be in the wood? I think I always assumed the former until recently. If it is for bugs, what temp do you "bake" at for how long?
A couple years ago, I got on the wait list to buy a product ... you mentioned you might consider making a cocktail shaker when my number comes up. Still possible? 🤞
Ok, I have a question. I am looking at getting started in woodworking, but I am looking to do all natural w/o using any resin. Anybody have some suggestion on resources to learn about that type of woodworking. Every woodworking video I have watched on UA-cam adds resin to the creation.
Very nice. When are you going to do the video about what you use resin shavings for? Also can I ask where you get the inserts from? Would like to try making something similar myself if you don't mind sharing where you source them?
what did the woodworkers ever do before epoxy was invented? seems like when they see a piece of wood, they want nothing more than to pour some epoxy on some wood and cackle with delight. again and again and again. and again.
Plenty of turning videos on my channel without epoxy, possibly you could go and watch those, then see what you can moan about, I'm sure you'll find something.
@@MattJordanWoodturning I’m sorry for venting - it wasn’t directed at you personally, I didn’t strategically come here to give _you_ a hard time, to me this is just a random video form a random dude that the algorithm recommended. I’m kind of fed up with the trend generally, but by no means do I have a gripe with what you do. In hindsight it was misdirected so don’t take it to heart and epoxy away if that works for you.
Your ability to turn what appears to be garbage wood into a beautiful piece never ceases to amaze me.
Absolutely beautiful! One of these days I'm going to own one of your mugs. LOL ❤❤❤❤❤
I love that the cup appears to give you a thumbs up on one side
Never cease. All we can say. Kudos from the Fiji Islands and stay blessed man.👍👍
Thank you 🙌
Beautiful mug! From an ordinary piece of wood to something gorgeous and practical.
I could definitely see myself drinking my coffee from it! ☕
Thank you! Cheers!
It’s not that practical

Screw to secure the insert in, then filled in with used ground coffee and CA glue
@@MattJordanWoodturning I did not know you can use coffee as well. I always used sawdust to fill up holes and such. Really interesting!

I love the cup. The handle seems a bit awkward looking, it's too large. But that cup is stunning.
Stunning work. But where on earth do you find your inserts? I can’t find them anywhere.
Thanks, import them myself
Awesome mug 👌Where online do you buy the cup liners from ?
Thanks, I import them myself
Matt, metal in the middle of the handle design or extra stability???? Fantastic coffee mug.
Thanks, just a design feature

Just to dry the wood, but at 106 degrees Celsius for several hours, it has the effect to kill anything off too 👍
@@MattJordanWoodturning thanks!
Where did you buy the steel liner
What polish do you use to make it instantly shiny and richer in colour?
I use Danish Oil, but you need to build it up with several coats
I LOOKED AT A LOT OF LATHES. I DESIDED ON THE LAGUNA 18/36 . DO YOU RECOMMEND THAT?
I do, brilliant lathe 👍
Nice one what's the finish you've used ? Thanks
Danish Oil

You take some pieces of wood that someone else would put in the fireplace and turn it into art
Hello
Don't you at least have gloves to protect yourself from splinters?
Don't get splinters with woodturning 👍
The epoxy looks like the back of a man’s head lol
👍👍
What a pity. I was looking for wood turning and it turned out to be just a more of cheap micro plastic production. 😢
Absolutely awful handle, please do one without the handle, it ruined everything. The cup itself is gorgeous.
