  • Looking for a solid, easy to use and affordable wireless follow focus system? Say hello to the Remote AIR 3 from PD Movie!
    Amazon (PAID LINK): geni.us/d1esn8w
    B&H Photo Video: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...
    Even with the great auto focus we have today, most filmmakers will prefer manual focus for ultimate control over their images. To help with that, many crews include an AC (assistant camera) who's primary purpose is operating focus. With smaller camera system and more complex movement, pulling focus from the camera can be tough. Wireless focus systems like this PD Remote Air 3 allow you to pull focus from any location.
    I only touched on what the PD Remote Air 3 can do. Here is a longer list of features:
    Ultra-compact lens control system with hand unit and iOS app control
    Hand unit controller and dual-motor kit
    Up to 330' transmission range
    German-made, brushless, highly responsive receiver motor
    An OLED screen displays the signal channel and strength, motor voltage, and Bluetooth connection status
    Mounts to single 19mm or 15mm rod
    Compatible with 0.8 Mod gear pitch cine lenses or lens gears
    iOS app control for setting limits and marks, saving lens data, and programming automatic F/I/Z pulls
    You can learn more about the system here:

    Wow. Just wow. Besides the review. This is your best looking video as in regards to lighting. Seriously! The B-Roll was really lovely to look at and dig the vintage look too of the your talking head shots. I remember your videos from your apt days and the growth is amazing. Sorry for the long comment. One of my all time fav UA-cam reviewers.

    I love the way the new lens looks, it gives a feel... idk... it doesn’t seem like digital video, it seems to give it more character! And I love this system and would love to try it! Although I do agree all the presses does seem a bit complicated...

    Hi, I have had the experience 2 times that the focus motors are so strong that the endstop of the Rokinons focus break. Be careful when using autocal with the Rokinons. As it looks like in the video; the motor is moving your whole rig slightly, so they are for sure strong and it might be a matter of time until the lens is damaged. Keep up the good reviews. This might be a future purchase.

    I usually love your reviews, you give it raw and do pro and con arguments and finally you say weather or not the item is for you. This review or should I say infomercial however is all about how good this thing is you could not find any thing con about it which makes me think it was just a paid advertisement. Hope I’m wrong but either way keep the hustle once the bills get paid lol.

    This looks cool, but I wish there were more remote focus pulls that functioned as screw-on handles for dual-handle gimbal use (much like the Aputure Lens Regain, except without a speedbooster). Do you know of anything like that Caleb?

    I kinda like the look. It is a little soft, mostly from chromatic aberrations and edges are a little distorted. It almost looked like it wasn't focused on the primary subject very well or the dof was way too shallow. I bet however if you had a little more light and could stop down a bit, it might have cleared up just enough. Bokeh was interesting but nice. Let's put it this way, it's creamy, and I like that, but maybe a little more light could it would sharpen it up. I personally don't care for the ultra sharp "clinical" look video can have so your experiment was welcome I did watch it in 4k playback and I did consider the crappy YT compression .

    Hey bro at the time duration of 9:40 the rokinon lens moves up a little bit. May be you have noticed while editing. is that because of the focus motor or may be the tripod baseplate and camera body loose connection. M confused. Can you find a reason? May be the motor is too strong for this kind of DSLR or mirror less system which has very loose contact because of only one screw mount. Thanks for the vdo.

    • @dslrvideoshooter
      @dslrvideoshooter  6 років тому +4

      The motor is just fine. The problem was my camera setup. I used the GH5s with a battery grip. The battery grip doesn't have a very strong connection to the camera. Without the grip there are no problems.

    hey caleb, i just purchased GH5s. but the problem is that i am getting noise in the footage(mostly in the defocused background), even when i am using my sigma 18-35 wide oprn at f1.2 and iso at 400/800. i dont understand what the problem is. i am not using any light but even at C4k 400mbps noise is considerable. can you help me with this ??

    • @johanlindqvist99
      @johanlindqvist99 6 років тому +1

      There might be that you are underexposing the image. I own a GH5s myself and when shooting log you have to be careful about the IRE values. I recommend you watch this: ua-cam.com/video/rsOLAdVccEk/v-deo.html
      In short terms; It´s easy to underexpose log and get unwanted noise, waveform monitor is your friend for the GH5s.

    The auto calibrate function will not work with a focus-by-wire lens because those lens rings don't stop rotating after reaching the minimum focus distance/infinity. Not that there's a big chance anyone is using a focus-by-wire lens at this budget because as far as I know this is mostly used in cheaper lenses, but still something to keep in mind. I have no focus-by-wire lenses but I wonder if this system can still be calibrated if you do, or maybe calibration isn't really necessary if the lens can't be damaged from turning a ring too far.

    • @iryssteel
      @iryssteel 6 років тому

      FBW is impossible to do remotely short of sending the lens a signal directly (Foolcontrol, AputureDEC). Not worth it tbh. Better off using older stills lenses with gears glued on.

  • @iryssteel
    @iryssteel 6 років тому

    Not a fan of the multiple tap solution to the problem... Dedicated buttons and short menus are the way forward. The motors look to be quite slow. Hope that can be changed by tapping...
    The artistry function is nice for 1st time focus pullers but when you need to hit marks accurately and quickly it'll be a pain. If you need to approach infinity very quickly (like when filming cars) you wont be able to keep up.
    Not having lens mapping is not a feature, it's a limitation. I understand them not having it, it's expensive to develop the firmware. Does mean you'll need as many rings as you have lenses so you can mark up the rings to you can focus by mark if the wireless video goes down. Pretty standard for a lower budget LCS. A Bartech is the same.
    It looks like a fine system for videographers and occasional gimbal work but you hand that to any focus puller and they'll laugh. Price is good, Tilta is cheaper for a 3 channel (with very similar motors). Never really understood the niche of PDmovie, still don't.
    Hopefully you get good use out of it.
