According to a NEPRA report (Published in Dawn in March 2023), the cost of producing electricity through hydro was only 7 Rs per unit while using furnace oil it was around 50 Rs and even for solar it was around 25. I understand the issue is controversial but there must be areas where Dams can be constructed without political and provincial backlash. Expensive energy is the biggest hurdle to growth in Pakistan. We import expensive fuel which is our largest import. This drives the price of dollar upwards and causes even more inflation. I believe if we could somehow generate another 20,000 MW of hydro energy, the fortunes of this country would change InshAllah. A news report last year also mentioned the viability of Katzarah and Bungi Dam (combined 20,000 plus MW) and a Russian consortium offer to build Katzarah Dam.
